built: together Work with us and boost your business!
The built environment sector continues to face severe challenges in the current economic climate. It’s now more important than ever to build strong, mutually beneficial relationships between industry and academia. Working together, we can play a vital role in the stabilisation and growth of our sector.
Sheffield Hallam University’s Department of the Built Environment is one of the largest construction, surveying and real estate departments in the UK’s Higher Education sector. With more than 40 years of experience, we create resilient built environment professionals who can best serve the needs of practice in the UK and internationally. The department has a history of working with industry and a reputation for delivering practical degree programmes and innovative and work-ready graduates. We aim to further develop our links with industry partners, stakeholders and alumni, and have lots of opportunities for you to work with us to ensure the sustainability and growth of our sector. Above all we are approachable, supportive and committed to building the next generation of built environment professionals collaboratively with our partners.
Opportunities for you to work with Sheffield Hallam University. Help us develop the work-ready graduates you need When you work with us, we can give you input into the development of our course programmes. Not only does this enable us to ensure our syllabus is up to date, it also provides our students with the skills that you need to support your business. Provide a placement opportunity Want a chance to work with fresh young talent and shape the built environment professionals of the future? If you provide a placement opportunity for a student then we can support you through the process by advertising your placement, collecting CVs on your behalf and facilitating interviews. Ultimately, we can find your perfect match.
Take part in our Built Environment Employers’ Day We can provide a great opportunity for you to meet our students at our annual Built Environment Employers’ Day, which is organised by the Built Environment Student Society. We can also advertise your graduate vacancy on campus. Develop yourself and your staff with our Continuous Professional Development (CPD) events We have a wide range of knowledge in the industry and some of our academics are regular CPD speakers. We can offer CPD events tailored to your specific requirements. Work with a student on a research project to benefit your business During their final year, students are required to research an industry-related topic to a professional standard to support a 15,000 word dissertation. We annually publish the best of these in Built Environment Research Transactions (BERT).
Students are always open to topics to focus on and we encourage you to take advantage of this unique opportunity to put forward areas of research that will benefit your business. Mentor a student and develop your employees’ skills Mentoring is not only beneficial to our students but also to the employers who take the opportunity to bond with, and help guide, the next generation of talented industry professionals. This mentoring can be through a formal and structured arrangement such as the Sheffield Hallam University Mentoring Scheme, or a more casual link such as making yourself available to answer ad hoc questions on such matters as interview techniques, assessment centres, career pathways etc. The mentoring scheme is also an ideal way to develop vital leadership skill in your employees.

Our students are instilled with a sense of vocation and employability from the outset and we support them every step of the way.
