Beryl Jane Flett Studio: for our community
In a true milestone that follows over two years of construction, we are delighted to see the new Beryl Jane Flett Studio officially open on 24 January 2023. The COVID pandemic and some very wet weather across the region presented many challenges along the way, however, the new space for our community is now complete and ready for use.
The studio is connected to the existing building by an extension to the MEC foyer, and is a vibrant new multi-purpose theatre space featuring retractable seating for up to 160 patrons.
Providing this new space for our community has been possible with funding from both the state and federal Government, a generous bequest from the family of Beryl Jane Flett, and assistance from MidCoast Council.
The versatile flat floor space and rigging system, together with a ceiling height of over 9 metres, provides an excellent setting for rehearsals, film screenings, and more intimate local and touring performances.
It’s a fantastic asset in which to nurture artistic talent for both professional and emerging artists and provides a beautiful space for our local arts groups to develop their ideas. The space is designed to incorporate features identified as important following local community consultation.
The Beryl Jane Flett studio will host a broad range of events for local audiences including cabaret, comedy, spoken word, film and contemporary music.

Presented by Taree Arts Council
Jesus Christ Superstar
Taree Arts Council first presented this work in 1996. Now, 27 years later, Director Dean Snook will present his updated and unique vision for 2023!
Debuting on stage in 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar is a sung-through rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice.
Loosely based on the Gospels’ accounts of the Passion, the work interprets the psychology of Jesus and other characters, with much of the plot centred on Judas Iscariot, who is dissatisfied with the direction in which Jesus is leading his disciples.
Contemporary attitudes, sensibilities and slang pervade the lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life that are scattered throughout.
The work traces the last seven days of the life of Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Judas fears that the compassionate movement, with Jesus at its leader, has become a personality cult, with many of Jesus’ statements being taken up and twisted by his followers.

Taree Arts Council came into existence many years ago when a few amateur singers and actors got together to perform for their own enjoyment and the entertainment of the community of the Manning Region.
Since then, Taree Arts Council has grown exponentially and has so excelled in quality and professionalism to far exceed all initial expectations. Indeed, some of its shows could proudly stand against many productions in the metropolitan area for their high standard of music, dance, costuming, scenery, directing and acting.

Are We There Yet?
The year I turned eight, Mum and Dad took us on a trip around Australia. Luke, Billy and I missed school for the whole winter term.
Alison Lester’s much loved picture book Are We There Yet? comes to life on stage at the Manning Entertainment Centre for the first time in 2023!
Join 8-year old Grace and her family on an adventurous (and often funny) expedition across the country, visiting iconic Australian landmarks along the way including the Great Australian Bight, Uluru, Surfers Paradise, and the Sydney Opera House.
From the team behind Magic Beach, The Gruffalo and The 13-, 26-, 52-, 78- & 91-Storey Treehouses, this new adaptation from multi-award winning playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer is a celebration of family, love, and the diversity and beauty of Australia.
Based on an actual road trip that Alison Lester went on with her family, it is the second of her classic picture books to be adapted for the stage. This beloved story will be brought to life with songs, laughs and quokkas(!) in a show that the entire family will enjoy.

LIOR & Domini - Animal in Hiding
Animal in Hiding is a collaboration between one of Australia’s most established and critically acclaimed singer/songwriters Lior, together with emerging artist and exciting new voice on the Australian music scene, Domini Forster.
It is the fruit of a creative partnership developed over six years touring together. Initially Domini toured as Lior’s support act, then as a guest vocalist and now as co-writer on their debut EP Animal in Hiding
While Lior and Domini began writing the songs in late 2019, much of the material was developed during Melbourne’s long lockdown, over zoom from their respective homes. The title track, originally written about the isolation of winter, became the prophetic seed of the project.
Animal in Hiding features songs that are rooted in intimate storytelling. Underpinned by intricate guitar, Lior and Domini’s close vocal harmonies are the focal point of the songs, harking back to the iconic folk duos of the 60s.

The Grigoryan Brothers
This Is Us: A musical reflection of Australia
Acclaimed guitarists Slava and Leonard Grigoryan have created a suite of music inspired by objects personally selected from the National Museum of Australia’s vast collection tracing Australia’s diverse and complex history.
The evocative nature of each of the 18 compositions is heightened by the projection of a high-definition 3D video of the relevant object. The power this has on the listener/observer is palpable.
Incorporating all their influences from classical to jazz and contemporary music, performed on a variety of guitars (electric, 8 string tenor ukulele, 12 string and classical), audiences will see and hear the Grigoryan Brothers like never before.
This Is Us is also a personal declaration from Slava and Leonard, that this music, composed during lockdown with each living in different states, is a new direction for them. While they have included original compositions within programs in the past, this is the first time they will be performing an entire program of original works.
The objects and music take us from the deep past of early Indigenous Australians to the making of contemporary Australian society.

Wild Thing
How far would you go for a friend?
A provocative story for our times, this funny and poignant new Australian play by award-winning writer Suzanne Hawley is both a comedy and a tragedy. A tale of sea eagles and pole dancing, of children and childhood dreams, of religion and rock ‘n roll. Most of all, this is a tale of friendships that have stood the test of time – until they are put to the ultimate test.
Jackie, Elizabeth, Frances and Susan become besties at high school and find freedom in Swinging London a decade later. After that they carve out very different lives for themselves and don’t see each other as often, but always meet up once a year for the ‘Musketeer’s dinner’. But this year is different.
Past sixty, older but no wiser, the most radical member of the group is in crisis. To offer their support, the ‘Musketeers’ take Jackie back to her country home for a weekend – to relax and let their hair down. What could possibly go wrong? What follows tests their friendship, their morals and their courage as never before. And a final twist will change their lives forever.

Come and see the magnificent costumes full of vibrant colour, sets and props accentuating the beauty and splendor of this magical place, together with the outstanding skill, artistry and technique of the artists of the Victorian State Ballet. A must-see performance for the whole family!
The Little Mermaid is a new work in the VSB repertoire. Created in October 2018, the ballet follows the narrative based predominately on the story by Hans Christian Andersen. The choreography by Michelle Cassar de Sierra is a stunning display of classical ballet with elements of physical theatre that magically tell the tale.
VSB’s production of The Little Mermaid endeavours to immerse the audience right in amidst the fairy tale classic in a profound experience that is exhilarating, impacting and visually inspiring.
