GET FUNKY
THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHT USHERS IN A LOT OF HOPE AND HAPPINESS. YOU HAVE TO CELEBRATE IT IN YOUR BEST. WE TELL YOU WHAT’S NEW AND HAPPENING IN THE RETAIL MARKET
THIS Diwali, look at your wardrobe differently. In order to create a new look, you may not need to go for a complete overhaul. Perhaps, all you need is some fresh perspective. Here's how you can shop better (and wiser!): If you want to dress up traditionally, pick up silk weaves paired with banarasi blouses. Kanjeevarams are hot this year. Add to it some contemporary jewellery. In case you'd prefer a statement lehenga, dress up in hand-embroidered lehenga-choli with aari-tikki work on them. Kundan ornaments or even chunky silver along with a cloth and bangle tote will complete the look. Men who like wearing the dhoti can couple a Tussar dhoti with zari border with a matka silk kurta.
A certain degree of daring is a pre-requisite if you have to usher in something new. As fashion designers put together multiple solid colours to create what they call 'colour blocking', why not try something fresh this Diwali? You could either wear an outfit with a few blocks of colour or wear solid colours separately along with colourblocked accessories. Oranges, pinks and blues on jumpsuits along with a fuchsia and yellow clutch, t-shirt dresses and bright tunics in citrus and limes, Angarakha-inspired kurtas in a solid colour paired with churidar pants in another solid colour are a few options for women who want to strike it with elan. Add on a classy sling bag or a funky cross-body bag to complete the look. Invest in about
two sets of solid coloured tops, pants, shoes and some neckpieces for all the permutation and combination. Silk chiffon jumpsuits when worn with a silk-embroidered gilet (a sleeveless jacket-like waistcoat) create a fresh evening look for women. If you want to sport a more contemporary look, pair a printed chiffon sari with a sheer silver shirt. The shirt and sari combination is what many designers are vouching for this season. And if quirky is not your style, team a silk printed skirt with a georgette shirt. Men can pair up printed kurtas with fun pop art like motorcycles, glasses and Che Guevara portraits with jeans. Men can also do a whole lot more with their kurtas. This sea-
son, explore different neck styles. Shirt collars and the wide Paithani V-neck looks hot with a touch of fine embroidery that's not too heavy. Nehru collared shirts and band galas can be dug out once again. Explore fabrics like raw silk and Tussar instead of Jamvar. Khadder has made a strong comeback. If you want something more formal, wear a Jodhpuri coat. The stand up collar is the focal point of this garment. Worn with matching narrow trousers, its impact can set you apart from the ordinary. Navy blue, olive and pistachio green, dull rose and turquoise, stone grey and mud brown are popular colours for kurtas and if you want a more flamboyant look, choose a shade of teal.

PICS/NIMESH DAVE
A PATAKA CAN’T BUY A PATAKA, DIVYA DUTTA SAGELY TELLS US. BUT THIS DYNAMITE PERFORMER KNOWS HOW TO HAVE A BLAST DURING DIWALI. HERE’S HOW...
ACTOR Divya Dutta simply loves Diwali. The festival reminds her of her childhood in Ludhiana, Punjab when she lit lamps sitting on dad's lap and strutted around her neighbourhood in her new lehengas. Every year she celebrates Diwali in a traditional manner with Lakshmi Puja and bright fireworks. Decked in a beautiful anarkali, the lady gets talking about the festival of lights:
that, and rockets were banned thereafter. Ludhiana looked splendid during the festive season. People used to light candles or diyas on the balconies, terraces, porches, fences or verandas of their houses unlike Mumbai where we only have electric lights on the windows. The sight of entire houses being lit with diyas was simply beautiful, to say the least. I still maintain the tradiDown memory lane tion and place candles/diyas on my My earliest memories of Diwali are windowsill. of the time when I was five or six, sitting on my dad's lap and lighting Traditionalist at heart the diyas for the Lakshmi Puja. I love the ladoos, halwa and barfis that make Diwali so yummy. My favourite sweets are Batashas. It is a very traditional item and you'll only find it in small town India. During Diwali, we get them in different shapes like elephants or dolls in colours like green, orange or pink. As kids, we loved gorging on them.
clothes or gifts for my family and myself. On Dhanteras, we either buy jewellery, silver coins or utensils. A few years back, my doctor brother gifted me a gold bracelet with his first paycheque. It has to be my most cherished Diwali gift till date. My brother and I enjoy lighting crackers in the evening along with other kids from my society. Over the years, I have become a little scared of the bombs.
It’s showtime
When I was 12, I got 10-15 lehenga sets on Diwali. So, throughout the two days of Diwali, I changed clothes five-six times and went around showing my dresses to all Gifts galore and sundry asking them how pretty Normally, I step out shopping a I looked in each one of them. ACCORDING to Dorris of Bharat & Dorris, "I think the biggest trend this season is nude makeup with warm and neutral tones such as peaches and oranges. The makeup this season should be subtle and fresh with light neutral choices of colours. For a day look, I suggest go neutral with a hint of pink blusher on the cheeks." Shailesh Moolya, technical director for Juice Salon suggests maroon, red and bronze as the colours for the season since they also suit the Indian skin tone.

Backless blouses and ghagras with heavy zardozi embellishments and crystal work are in vogue this season. To give your ethnic wear a modern look, you can add delicate armlets with heavy crystal work to your blouses. Newer designs reveal a mélange of silhouettes embellished with exquisite Swarovski and crystal work, teamed with thread and pearl embroidery.
Coming to wedding dresses, unique necklines are in this season. What's hottest is the illusion neckline — a sheer, delicate, and often embellished layer of fabric veiling the skin that would otherwise be exposed.
