AUTHENTIC LEARNING

Many classes incorporate the resources of the city, rendering it a living laboratory. Art history students study an original Picasso or Matisse rather than relying on reproductions; political science students learn diplomacy at the United Nations six miles away; architecture students examine the design of the world’s most iconic buildings; urban studies students experience the culture and diversity of countless ethnic neighborhoods.

A WELCOMING NEIGHBORHOOD

Known as the city’s “academic acropolis” for its six institutions of higher education and nearly 40,000 students, Barnard’s neighborhood, Morningside Heights, has the feel of a friendly college town with dozens of restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, and markets.

LEADING WOMEN

ROLE MODELS

Barnard women are among the leading advocates for social change. Here, students are surrounded by motivated, influential women. They are inspired by programs at the Barnard Center for Research on Women and gain confidence through initiatives such as the Athena Center for Leadership Studies.

Notable women from around the world, many of them alumnae, come to Barnard to share their experiences and worldviews. In this setting, noted for promoting women’s self-confidence, academic ability, and cultural awareness, women have more opportunities for leadership and regularly observe other women in top positions.
