ARMENIAN FOOD & DRINKS, LIVE MUSIC, NON-STOP PARTY & NETWORKING presented by Armenia Country of Honour
At a time when subscription services are adding users faster than ever, press reports continue to indicate dissatisfaction with royalty payments and the transparency in the money flow to creators. Berklee’s Institute for Creative Entrepreneurship (BerkleeICE) is releasing the results of a year long study about these issues, in Phase One of a multi-year attempt by its Rethink Music initiative to resolve some of them. Where is the money really going? Can a decentralized copyright registry really solve some of the problems, and how might it be built? What role could cryptocurrencies and blockchain play in enabling payments?
Music is becoming a utility - available everywhere you want it, as much as you want, for a monthly subscription or paid for by advertising. But is the distribution of streaming revenues aligned with the value of an individual subscriber? Per-user vs. prorata income distribution from on-demand streaming services will be evaluated against the available literature and discussed in the context of providing a living wage to mid-level career artists as music streaming services attempt to scale. This session will also look into market growth through hi-definition audio sales (streaming and download), and evaluate new business ideas that show revenue promise for the future.

What do these artists have that enable them to cross cultural barriers and why do they seek to leave and move their career forward abroad? Is it because record labels change their approach when working in different territories or with foreign artists? Representatives of indie record labels from all over Europe will come together to swap success stories from these well-travelled artists who found gold and glory where they sometimes least expected it.

Conventional thinking states that you need a good idea in order to start a company, though most entrepreneurs will admit that you need to start a company in order to get a good idea. Not unlike starting a band in order to come up with that first great song. This course will explore to uncanny similarities between musical and entrepreneurial creation, such as collaboration, iteration, observation, as well as prototyping and improvisation. Is there more to successful entrepreneurship than well researched business plans and financial models? Perhaps it’s not surprising that some of the world’s best known companies like Microsoft, Apple, Dropbox, AOL and Pandora were founded by musicians.
