Guardian Angels: 4. Use of Force Manual

Guardian Angels Arrest Force

As the name implies, Arrest Force is only to be used when arresting someone for committing a crime (a misdemeanor crime in your presence or a felony crime with reasonable suspicion). ALWAYS assume the perp is armed. The primary reason for taking a perp down to the ground is to enable you to control and search the perp for weapons. The secondary goal is to immobilize him or keep him from running away. The takedown should be fluid, sudden, and forceful. The perp should have no time to retrieve or even think about retrieving his concealed weapon. Your body should always be closely touching the perp so that you can feel his body maneuvering to retrieve a weapon. The goal is not to injure the perp, however, you should apply sufficient force to temporarily shock him to give you time to control and search him before he can think to react or resist. This is the minimum force necessary to make an arrest and keep you safe.

Guardian Angels Dynamic Takedowns

Shooting When you “shoot”to take someone down from the front, DO NOT look down to the ground. The target can either knee you in the head or put you in a guillotine choke.

Always keep your head up and look at your target. Also keep your arms up and forward to deflect any strike. You may also want to start high and look the target straight in the eyes to distract him. At the very last moment, shoot low. You may also jab at him right before you shoot in order to distract him. Another distraction method is to shoot leading with a low front kick.

Immediately take your head up and over his body then pass his legs for a full mount.

Guardian Angels Ground Grappling

Ground Grappling Royce Gracie and the Gracie family forever changed martial arts and fighting tournaments. In the beginning of the Ultimate Fighting Championships, Royce Gracie took opponents to the ground and from a supposedly inferior position lying on his back, he was able to frustrate, exhaust, and then force his opponents to quit. Since then, every serious martial artist and fighting athlete studies the art of ground grappling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or takes lessons directly from the Gracie family. The Guardian Angels have adopted ground grappling tactics for a number of reasons:  For one-on-one fighting, few styles beat ground grappling.  Most street fighters do not know how to fight on the ground.  Ground grappling appears less violent and aggressive to the general public.  With sufficient training, a ground grappler can more easily avoid seriously injuring an opponent compared with striking. Ground Grappling Fundamental Training Ground grapplers almost use the opposite tactics as strikers. Strikers use large muscles for large movements. Ground grapplers use small muscles for small movements. Strikers use flurries and combinations. Ground grapplers use patience and constantly search for opportunities. Strikers like a certain distance from an opponent. Ground grapplers try to eliminate any gap between bodies. Strikers exhale when striking. Ground grapplers use short, rapid breaths. When training for ground grappling, train with weights, sacks of sand, or a person on your body. Practice hip movement. Keep your arms close to your body. Practice moving weights around on your back. Ground Grappling Exercises  

One Angel should practice trying to escape and run away while the other Angel tries to keep the first one on the ground. While two Angels are grappling, other Angels should intermittently drop tennis balls on their faces to make sure they are paying attention to their surroundings.

Close Quarters Most kids play fight. They playfully kick and hit each other as well as practice blocks and grabs. Most people have some rudimentary stand up fighting skill. Very few kids, however, play wrestle. Wrestling is simply too intimate and uncomfortable. In order

to become a skilled ground grappler, you must simply get used to holding someone close to your body. At first, you may feel extremely uncomfortable and unusual especially in the guard. You should be wearing a protective cup in the first place, and this may make you feel more comfortable too. Wearing a protective cup is also mandatory if you are grappling with a female. Females may feel even more uncomfortable;however, this is life and death training. While females should start out grappling with other females, they should also practice grappling with males and vice versa. Start out easy and light. You should gradually progress to more intense and closer contact. If someone feels uncomfortable or light headed, they may call time and take a break. If for whatever reason a person feels extremely uncomfortable grappling, or a female refuses to grapple with males, they may choose not to participate. Since the vast majority of people out there feel naturally uncomfortable grappling on the ground, this gives us a tremendous advantage over them. They will overexert energy trying to get out and eventually burn out. Meanwhile, we gain superior position and control over them, allowing us to more quickly search for weapons.

Body Movement Exercise One of the keys to grappling is being able to maneuver about the opponent’ s body. Practice this by having someone place his hands and knees on the ground. Place your chest on his back. Swivel your body completely around the person.

Guard to Full Mount The Guard is the foundation of ground grappling. It should be used, however, only as an intermediary move. In other words, do not stay in the guard for long. The Full Guard occurs when you have wrapped both your legs around the opponent, and you have locked your feet together. 1. 2. 3. 4.

From the Guard, arch your back so the perp cannot strike your head. Throw your legs up and pull him down upon you. To throw him to your right, grab his left arm and trap his left leg. Plant your left foot and propel yourself from it while pulling his left arm in.

Guardian Angels Submission Headlocks Headlocks should be used as a last resort against a non-compliant or extremely violent perp. Be extremely careful. You are NOT choking the perp. You are temporarily constricting the flow of blood to his head. This will be uncomfortable enough for him to stop resisting, or it could simply knock him unconscious. DO NOT keep him in a headlock for more than 10 seconds. Front Headlock 1. 2. 3.
