ACT required by all Michigan colleges The ACT (No Writing) consists of four multiple-choice tests: English, mathematics, reading and science. The ACT Plus Writing includes the four multiple-choice tests and a writing test. The ACT is a national college admissions test that assesses high school students’ general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work. It is a curriculum- and standards-based test, not an aptitude or an IQ test. Instead, the questions on the ACT are directly related to what students have learned in high school. Colleges and universities in Michigan and the Midwest require the ACT test. All four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. accept the ACT, but different institutions place different emphasis on standardized tests such as the ACT, compared to other factors of evaluation, such as class rank, GPA and extracurricular activities. The ACT Plus Writing is available on all national test dates. The 30-minute ACT Writing Test complements the English test. The combined information from both tests tells post-secondary institutions about students’ understanding of the conventions of standard written English and their ability to produce a direct sample of writing. Because post-secondary institutions have varying needs, ACT offers the writing test as an option so that students are not required to take a test they do not need to take, thus avoiding unnecessary expense, and institutions have the freedom to require the tests that best meet their information needs. Check directly with the institutions you are considering to find out their requirements, or ask your high school counselor which test option you should take. Find more information online at www.act.org.

Students must present both an acceptable photo identification and their printed ACT admission or standby ticket before being admitted to test. The first and last names on the photo ID must be consistent with the names on the ACT ticket, which should be the student’s legal name. Do not use initials, shortened names or nicknames. Helping college students choose a major As recent college graduates can attest, the job market for young people can be difficult to navigate. Many recent graduates are still struggling to find full-time employment, and some are wondering if they chose the right major. Though choosing a major is about more than just finding a job, the financial burden of earning a college degree can’t be ignored. According to the Project on Student Debt, 71 percent of college seniors who graduated in 2012 had student loan debt, with an average of $29,400 per borrower. Between 2008 and 2012, the average student loan debt at graduation increased an average of 6 percent each year. So while the right major should incorporate a student’s interests, skills and strengths, it’s also important to find a major that can help students earn a living after they walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. The following are a handful of tips college students can employ to ensure they choose the right major. • Don’t jump into it. Some students might want to pick a major before they ever step foot on campus. While that strategy might work for some, it should only be employed by those students who are wholly certain a major is for them. Some students choose a major early on because they feel they may get a head start at navigating their way through a job

market that recently endured high levels of unemployment. But the pressure of finding a job should not be what drives students when choosing a major. Unless you’re entirely certain that a particular course of study is for you, give yourself some leeway and wait to choose a major. The first year or two of college is a great time to expand your academic horizons so use that time to your advantage. • Don’t procrastinate. While rushing into a major is a mistake, it’s also foolish to procrastinate with regard to choosing a course of study. According to The College Board’s annual survey of colleges, the average tuition and fees at private nonprofit four-year colleges for the 2013-14 school year was $30,094, while public four-year in-state tuition and fees averaged slightly less than $9,000 for the same year. So no matter which type of college or university a student enrolls in, he or she will be making a significant financial commitment. Waiting too long to choose a course of study may find you paying for courses you ultimately won’t need, increasing your already expensive tuition along the way. • Use the resources at your disposal. Students undecided about a college major should make use of their schools’ career development departments to help them get on the right path. Many such depart-

ments provide assessment tools to help students find a major that synthesizes their interests and skills with a field of study. In addition, the personnel within career development departments have dealt with hundreds, if not thousands, of previous students who found themselves in similar situations, and that experience can prove invaluable to students who feel lost with regard to choosing majors. • Know the requirements if you have a specific career in mind. While many majors are not difficult to navigate, some fields of study have strict guidelines that students should be aware of almost immediately. For example, students hoping to attend medical school after graduation need to determine which courses they absolutely must take in order to qualify for medical school. In addition, students with such specific plans in mind often must choose their majors as early as possible so they can plan their curriculum in accordance with the standards they will need to meet to be considered for postgraduate work. Choosing a major is a decision college students should not take lightly. But students who are unsure of what they want to study should approach the process of choosing a major with patience and an eye on finding a course of study that matches their interests with their skills.

Why go to college? (Reprinted from the ACT website) Whether you are uncertain about going to college or you just need some reassurance you’re on the right track, here are a few reasons to go to college: • Every bit of education you get after high school increases the chances you’ll earn good pay. Most college graduates earn more money during their working years than people who stop their education at high school earn. • The more education you get, the more likely it is you will always have a job. According to one estimate, by the year 2028 there will be 19 million

more jobs for educated workers than there are qualified people to fill them. • Continuing education after high school is much more important for your generation than it was for your parents’ generation. Today most good jobs require more than a high school diploma. Businesses want to hire people who know how to think and solve problems. • Education beyond high school gives you a lot of other benefits, including meeting new people, taking part in new opportunities to explore your interests, and experiencing success.

How college students can eat healthy If asked to reflect on their college years, many graduates likely would not recall healthy eating habits. College students are often pressed for time and short on funds, so a nutritious diet is sacrificed for the sake of convenience and cost. But a healthy diet can help college students handle the stresses of college life more effectively. The following are a handful of easy ways college students can improve their diets: • Eat breakfast. College students tend to stay up late and sleep in, but sleeping in at the expense of a healthy breakfast can impact performance in the classroom and make students more likely to overeat later in the day. • Snack healthy. Many students find snacks are an integral part of hours-long study sessions. But trips to the vending machine for candy bars or potato chips won’t add much nutritional value

to your diet. Bring healthy snacks such as fresh fruit, raw vegetables, Greek yogurt and whole wheat crackers to study sessions. • Make pizza healthier. Request your pizza be prepared with whole wheat dough. In addition, ask for less cheese and more tomato sauce. • Scale back on sugar. Avoid sugary beverages, including soda and drinks like sweetened iced tea or lemonade. Students looking to keep weight off and reduce their sugar intake also should drink their coffee black or with just light cream or fat-free milk. • Drink more water. The symptoms of dehydration mimic those of hunger, and college students might turn to snacks when all they really need is a glass of water. If you find yourself snacking shortly after eating a meal, then you might just need to drink more water.

Stepping up in STEM education SVSU answers the challenge to educate more students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics Saginaw Valley State University has a strong tradition of preparing graduates for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Many SVSU alumni have leadership roles with companies and organizations in the Great Lakes Bay Region and beyond. As Michigan’s need for STEM graduates has become more acute, SVSU is answering the challenge, partnering with leading regional employers and foundations to do even more. Over the summer, 13 middle school and high school teachers from Midland to Millington participated in the Dow Corning Foundation-SVSU STEM Community Partnership. A $254,000 grant from the Dow Corning Foundation

funded the collaborative effort, which is aimed at thousands of K-12 students within the region by enhancing the preparation of their teachers. After the 2014-15 school year began, hundreds of middle school and high school students engaged in an impressive list of handson STEM projects that were developed in the summer program. During a speech at SVSU last October, Andrew Liveris, president and CEO of The Dow Chemical Co., pledged his company’s support to increase interest among young people to select STEM courses. “Today’s life-changing innovations are developed at the intersections of many different sciences such as chemistry, biology, and materials engineering,” Liveris said. “This is why we must invest more in STEM education, especially at universities like [SVSU].” The Dow Science and Sustainability Education Center at SVSU launched this past summer. Six SVSU faculty led research teams that involved regional

middle and high school students and teachers, as well as SVSU students. The Dow Chemical Company Foundation also is funding a vehicle that will be fully equipped with instrumentation and supplies to do water quality testing. The mobile lab will travel to various sites in the Saginaw Bay Watershed to do such research, while also allowing for hands-on experience at schools and other community locations.

expand the STEM pipeline and SVSU addresses this by reaching students at three critical junctures.” SVSU knows more can and must be done to prepare students to succeed locally and compete globally. Deb Huntley, provost and vice president for academic affairs, enjoyed a 14-year career as a research chemist before joining SVSU. She sees a bright future for SVSU students, STEM-based employers, and the region as a whole.

SVSU’s latest and largest-ever gift comes courtesy of the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, which awarded $5 million to establish the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow STEM Scholar Network at SVSU. Starting in 2015, the initiative will target middle school and high school students through summer camps; also, it will fund undergraduate research projects by SVSU students.

“The students who study STEM at SVSU are going to have a range of new opportunities for undergraduate research that will give them a competitive advantage when they seek jobs or apply to graduate schools,” Huntley said. “The best part of these programs is that we are working together with employers and with K12 schools — providing resources for both of them to meet their needs. That’s what we should be doing as a regional public university, and I see us doing even more in the coming years.”

“We are pleased to have SVSU as a partner in this most vital effort,” said Macauley Whiting Jr., president of the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation. “There is a pressing need to

While a college degree is a prerequisite for many careers, it is not mandatory for every job. In fact, there are many lines of work that do not require a degree, and some might be a beneficial alternative for students.

Some students might want to consider trade schools Students in high school have long been encouraged to enroll in secondary education to further their career prospects. While a college degree is a prerequisite for many careers, it is not mandatory for every job. In fact, there are many lines of work that do not require a degree, and some might be a beneficial alternative for students. Many of these lines of work do require trade school certification. Trade school typically takes less time to complete than a more traditional four-year degree and such courses of study tend to be less expensive than college degrees. Some of these jobs include the following: • Ship captain: A captain will navigate a vessel and manage the crew. Additionally, he or she will comply with international and

local laws. Captains can expect an average salary of $87,000. • Web developer: Many web developers are self-taught, and many more supplement their skills by taking a few classes here and there. Web developers earn very good salaries, with a median salary of $75,000. • Tr a d e s m a n : P l u m b e r s , bricklayers, marble setters, and masons have been in high demand for centuries. Depending on the business and if a tradesman is self-employed, he or she can earn a considerable salary and enjoy a good living without having to earn a college degree. • Home health aide supervisor: These supervisors monitor the quality of care performed by aides for home patients and help develop a care plan. Much of the training for this profession occurs on the job, and workers receive

satisfaction from helping those in need. • Locomotive engineer: Many engineers begin as rail transportation workers and conductors before they move up to an engineer position. Driving the train requires knowledge of the mechanical operations of the locomotive and awareness of safety regulations. A locomotive engineer can earn as much as $70,000 annually if not more. • Air traffic controller: This is a demanding job and one that subjects workers to significant stress. Air traffic controllers are responsible for maintaining a safe and orderly flow of air traffic to prevent collisions or traffic buildup at airports. Many air traffic controllers complete training through aviation-related programs or military service. Salaries can reach six figures.

Tips for students Scholarships available in Huron County applying to colleges Applying Completing college applications can take a lot of time, so you want to make sure that you get it right the first time. Here are some tips to guide you through the process:

Know the Guidelines Before you start applying to schools, find out the application deadline and fees for each school you are considering. Read the information carefully to see if you are eligible for early admission decisions.

Plan Ahead It takes time to get standardized test scores tabulated and mailed, and it takes time for school counselors and others providing references to gather information. Give school officials plenty of notice.

Follow the Instructions and Proofread The application is often a college admission committee’s first contact with you. Make a good impression with a neat application free of spelling and grammatical errors.

Work with Your High School Go to your school counselor for help in getting all necessary transcripts (grade history), test scores and applications sent to prospective schools. If you decide to apply to schools that have not already received your test scores, you can ask the counselor to send your scores to that college.

Make the Most of Personal References Ask people who know you well, and who will give the best impression of you to your school. Prepare a neat and legible reference form and give your references plenty of time to respond.

Write an Outstanding Essay Most college applications require an essay, so spend time developing a good one. While a great essay probably won’t get you into college if you don’t meet the other academic requirements, it could move you from a “maybe” to a “yes.”

Be Ready to Interview, Audition or Submit a Portfolio Some colleges also require a personal interview or examples of work in special areas such as art and music.

Keep a Copy of All Application Materials You never know when you might need them again. ————— Developed from materials created by St. Clair County RESA
