The September meeting of the Leicester Parrot Club was not as well supported as Lynda would have liked but the 15 or so members that did support the club had a great evening. Lynda and Jo were attending the Stafford show with a Tombola stand to promote the club and raise some funds for the club, so it will be interesting to see and hear how they got on. Lynda is starting to look at her program for next year so again anyone who has any ideas for events don’t hesitate to contact her. The next club meeting is on Thursday the 26th October and it is a celebrating Halloween evening, so do come along and meet other parrot owners and their birds, and enjoy a pleasant evening in a birdy atmosphere. Children are also welcome to the club meetings and of course they will learn from the members and any guest speakers that come along to have a chat. One again Lynda and her team will be organising their Christmas events. How quickly has this year flew past?
Whilst having an interest in Wildlife it wasn’t until 1987 when Steve moved to a property with large gardens that we were able to start his parrot collection This developed very quickly from the initial Australian Parakeets to eventually keeping and breeding many Neotropical Parrots including Macaws, Conures, Parakeets and Parrots of which one, the Redcapped Parrot (Pionopsitta pileata), which Steve went on to breed to several generations, and was to be one of the major influences on his future travel escapades. . After a chance of a trip to Brazil, visiting the Pantanal and Amazon in 2000 with the eminent Danish aviculturist Peter Them, Steve decided that Travel and Parrot Watching was to be his future. Several years of research and journeys led to his first Parrot Watching Eco-Tour by his company ‘Wild Parrots Up Close’ in 2004 to the Atlantic Rainforest, Brazil in a quest to find the Red-capped Parrot in the wild amongst all the other Parrots, Birds and Wildlife of the area. Although he saw many Parrots, the Redcapped Parrot eluded him on this first tour,
however, Steve was not to be beaten and the following year had an amazing encounter with these special Parrots that will remain with him for life. Steve still loves to see this Parrot every time he goes to the Atlantic Rainforest, which is frequent, but now his Eco-Tours have taken him through many countries and habitats within South and Central America and the Caribbean watching many Macaws and Parrots, as well as lots of other birds and wildlife, allowing his clients numerous opportunities to Photograph, Video or just Observe all that they encounter. Tonight Steve has given up some of his quality time to come along to our club meeting to show us and tell the members about his experiences taking his clients to various venues to see Wild Parrots UP Close. Tonight you have the opportunity to have a chat with Steve and perhaps maybe even book yourself on one of his expeditions and treat yourself to a holiday of a lifetime and Live the Dream. A big thank you to Steve for coming along to talk to us this evening.
It was nice to see in one of the trade magazines that a vet had put pen to paper and said that she was sick of treating dogs that had swallowed a piece of plastic or part of a toy that had been purchased from a discount shop. She did recommend that owners think before the make the purchase. Parrot toys are very similar and in fact parrots are more prone to health problems than some other animals. We are all looking for a bargain but in some cases we need to look at what we are getting for our money, A bargain isn’t always a bargain and can sometimes cost ten times as much in vet bills and also we take the risk of death to the animal. Everything nowadays is made to a price and there are a number of businesses that sadly don’t care about the animal but just the profit. Quality food is very important to your parrot and again there are so many different mixes on the market that it is hard to choose from and sometimes we buy a mix that we like ourselves because it looks good or it’s cheap, but is it what the bird wants? Some companies are now taking out monkey nuts and reducing the amount of sunflower seeds. Sometimes this is because of pressure in the market place because we are sometimes brainwashed into believing that these products are not good for your bird. The big companies have to sell their products and in fact they are now producing some mixes but won’t guarantee it as a proper parrot mix because the ingredients have been changed and altered that they are not what the company will support as a proper parrot diet. Make sure that you get the right food for your bird. Whilst the internet is a fabulous place to obtain information always remember that sometimes all you are getting is someone’s personal opinion and you will then get someone else give you completely different information Always worth just remembering he is your bird..
