'Oops' on dialing 911, don't hang-up Each month, the Chesterfield County Emergency Communications Center takes hundreds of calls to find there’s no one on the other end. Emergency communications officers often are faced with “911 hang-ups” and “abandoned calls.” Hang-ups occur when callers hang up on an emergency communications officer. An abandoned call is when the caller disconnects even before the emergency communications officer hears a ringtone. Even though there was no ringtone, an abandoned call is still recorded in the Emergency Communications Center’s computer system. Most of these types of calls are honest mistakes — callers hit the wrong speed-dial button or “pocket dial” 911 — but some are emergencies. No matter whether someone hangs up or abandons a call, the response is the same: a return call from the emergency communications officer in an attempt to determine whether there’s an emergency. If there’s no answer but the address is known, such as when a call is made using a land-line phone, emergency responders are dispatched. Calls made with wireless phones do not always provide the exact address of the caller. Sometimes only an approximate location or the street address of the cellular tower is displayed, making it challenging for emergency communications officers to determine an accurate location. Emergency communications officers are urging people to not hang up when they call 911, even if they’ve called by accident, or to answer their phones when emergency communications officers return calls for verification. Verifying whether there is an emergency can take a lot of time and result in resources being unnecessarily dispatched. That’s why it’s so important for callers to stay on the line even if they realize they’ve called 911 by mistake, said Pam Cimburke, programs manager for the Chesterfield County Emergency Communications Center. People who have called 911 by accident should simply stay on the line to let the person who answers know there’s not an emergency, Cimburke said. Just as important as knowing what to do if you’ve called 911 unintentionally is knowing when it is appropriate to call 911, said Tammy Higgins, operations manager for the Chesterfield County Emergency Communications Center. The Emergency Communications Center has a non-emergency number at (804)748-1251 that people may call when there’s not an emergency but they still need assistance. Some examples include calls about barking dogs, traffic jams or minor traffic incidents in which it’s obvious that nobody is hurt. People should dial 911 anytime there is immediate danger to life or property, a medical emergency, any type of fire, and when they see crimes in progress or suspect crimes have just occurred. Calling to provide information about a crime days after it occurred can be handled through the nonemergency line, Higgins said.

n celebration of a new film produced by DreamWorks Studios, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (DST)-the single largest African-American women’s organization in the country- announced its support of the movie “The Help” with a red carpet event. The sorority has adopted the ground-breaking film, which sheds light on the experiences of black maids in 1960s Mississippi and an aspiring white writer who wants to help tell their story, as its fourth Delta Red Carpet feature film under its Project ART (Actively Redefining Together) initiative. “It’s a story that is painfully honest, yet incredibly uplifting and inspiring … a testament to the lives of so many AfricanAmerican women,” said National President Cynthia M. A. Butler-McIntyre. “It offers a realistic depiction of what can happen—good and bad—when you make the decision to stand up and speak out. The film also offers a snapshot of the harsh reality of race relations in America while also addressing the unspoken power and beauty of relationships among all women, regardless of race.” Project ART is an initiative spear-headed by the organization’s National Commission on Arts and Letters. It has a primary focus of working with the sorority’s membership and potential stakeholders to redefine images of the African-American community in all forms of artistic media. Based on a best-selling novel of the same title, the movie “The Help” opened nationwide on Aug. 10. It features three actresses who are members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority— THE HELP page 2

Local employee wins national theme contest

One of the Defense Logistics Agency Aviation’s own made a contribution to Hispanic Heritage and was chosen as the sole winner of the month’s theme in a national contest. Maurice Sanabria’s, “Many backgrounds, many stories and one American spirit,” was selected by the National Council of Hispanic Program Managers from submissions sent from all across the country. Sanabria, a lean six analyst in the continuous process improvement division, said he first heard about the contest in an email sent out from the Hispanic Employment Program manager’s office, calling for theme nominations. He had previously been involved with the Hispanic Employment Program Committee for five

creating a needed resource. The idea of creating a guide began four years ago when Robinson and Adkins were instructors at the Midlothian Family YMCA. “Clarissa and I were both teaching chair yoga classes and we couldn’t find anything that was in writing to give to our students. We looked around and found nothing, so I said, ‘I think we have to write it.’” Each author modeled for the images seen throughout the book. Robinson’s brother, Herb Baugh, who also introduced his sister to yoga, also modeled. The photography was created by one of Adkins’ students, Mary Davis. The three authors began

years and said he recognized the challenges and successes Hispanics have faced over the years. “I was inspired by all the people I had met and encountered working for DLA Aviation, because a lot of us have different cultural backgrounds, different traditions and different socialeconomic backgrounds,” Sanabria said. “We have common bonds in the desire to progress in life and to help our families move forward and to contribute to this country that allows us to do that. This is what I think embodies the American spirit and the dream of making it in the world,” he said. Sanabria said that it is important to participate in any activity that is geared toward helping and inspiring others

to succeed. “We have all seen in the news that there is a lot of talk about immigration and Hispanics becoming the largest minority group in the United States. We are a big part of the fabric of America. We are increasingly contributing to the greatness of this country, in the federal government, in the private sector, in the arts and in sports. I think creating an awareness of what Hispanics contribute to this country is very important,” Sanabria said. Sanabria is originally from Puerto Rico and said he moved to Virginia not too long ago after accepting his current position with DLA Aviation. This year celebrations will remember Hispanics who serve in so many capacities, as members of the Armed

Each selected meaningful quotes and agreed to organize the book as they would one of their classes. “Our whole mission for this project was just ‘keep it simple as possible’,” Adkins said. The crew paired with Create Space™, a self-publishing branch of Amazon.com for the final product. “It was a very successful interactive process,” Stewart said. “It was such a creative joy working with these ladies,” she said. Stewart is currently teaching yoga classes for seniors at

the Manchester and Powhatan YMCA and uses several poses in the book for when she’s traveling. Robinson is an instructor at Manchester and Powhatan YMCA, the Chesterfield Senior Center, Chesterfield Heights Retirement Community and currently teaches a yoga class for people in wheel chairs at Brandermill Woods Retirement Community. Adkins is teaching yoga at Woodlake SRC and coordinates the mind/body department as well as teaches yoga at American Family Swift Creek location. “Chair Yoga for You, a Practical Guide” can be ordered through Amazon.com or the authors’ website www. chairyogaforyou.com.

Applications for eligible students' free/reduced-rate meals available Chesterfield County Public Schools provides nutritious breakfasts and lunches in every school. Based on household size and income, students in elementary schools, middle schools and Chesterfield Community High School may qualify for free or reduced-price meals under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Schools will distribute applications for free or reduced-price meals to all households. Applications are also available online at chesterfield.k12. va.us, at every school office and at the school system’s Food and Nutrition Services Office, 7610 Whitepine Road. Only one completed, signed application per family is required. If a household is not eligible now for free or reduced-price meals, but experiences a financial change during the year, then a parent or guardian should submit another application. Students who qualify for reduced-price meals pay 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch; the full price of breakfast is $1.10 and the full price of lunch is $1.80. During the 2011-2012 year, the reduced fee will be waived so that students who qualify for reduced-price breakfasts and lunches will receive them free. Children in households enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly the food stamp program) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families may not need to complete an application for free or reduced-price meals. School officials will determine eligibility based on information from the Virginia Department of Social Services and will notify these households of their eligibility. If SNAP or TANF families are not notified automatically, they may fill out an application for free or reduced-price meals.

Other children who may be eligible for free or reduced-price meals are homeless, migrant or runaway children; foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court, regardless of the income of the household in which they reside; and children in households participating in the Women, Infants and Children Program. Families whose application for free or reduced-price meals is denied may appeal the decision by contacting David Myers, Assistant

Superintendent for Business and Finance, 7610 Whitepine Road, Richmond, Va. 23237, phone (804) 743-3717, Ext. 122. Appeals may be made orally or in writing. Chesterfield Community High is the only Chesterfield high school that participates in the federal school meal programs, but students in other Chesterfield high schools may pick up an application for free lunches from their school cafeteria or office.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

When unexpected house guests get hungry tive Extension helpful hand-out online. Like any wildlife, spiders will bite if threatened, but many of the Commonwealth’s spiders are not venomous or harmful to humans. They can bounce around like the Jumping Spider, which dines on pesky flies, or create quite a stir by their considerable size when running those eight legs across the garage floor, such as the Wolf Spider. Or the spider can be a typical garden variety that weaves an incredible platter to capture bugs just like my newly found respectable critter that had set up its slaughter house at my back door. So, I debated on whether or not to interrupt one of nature’s finest predators from eating the lovely mosquitoes and other winged nuisances that go bump in the night. I thought about taking the whisk broom and clearing the web. Yet, instead, I followed my instinct and let the spider stay for the evening’s buffet. It was strange how nature was accommodating the following evening. I saw that the spider was back again for a full-course moth meal, although with one exception. The newest web of the evening had moved relatively higher and I could easily pass without disturbing the web or its occupant. It’s true that thoughts of a spider leaping onto my head from its mesh of death did cross my mind, but there were hot dogs and hamburgers to be grilled and veggies to be sautéed. After all, the spider wasn’t the only belly that needed to be fed at my house.

normally do not turn the light on when heading out onto my back porch to view the evening sky, but some nagging gutfeeling told me not to take another step without really seeing what was in front of my face. And I’m glad I listened to that gnawing bit of saving grace. When I flipped the light switch, an eight-legged creature was hovering in front of my nose. I was too afraid to scream. I did manage to take a step back without disturbing the web or its owner. And then I noticed it. The brazen sucker, besides blocking the exit door, had created an incredible work of natural art. Getting over the crawly feeling from moments before, I snapped a photo to share with friends only to find a luminary haunting image. Spiders are fascinating critters, from a distance. Depending on the arachnid, their webs are an amazing symmetry of efficiency as they hang out waiting for a winged insect to plow into the dinner table. Of course, they incite a bit of fear in humans when portrayed as giant man-eaters or multiplied into millions in science-fiction thrillers. Who can ever forget the ending of the original movie “The Fly” (spoiler alert) as the transformed man-fly begs “help me” while trapped in the oncoming predator’s sticky silk? I still shudder at the thought of the main character’s demise. In real life, the majority of spiders in Virginia are relatively harmless – at least that’s what I found through the Virginia Coopera-

Helping Mother Nature takes its course Soils in this part of Virginia contain a very high percentage of clay and tightness of this soil causes the infiltration of rainwater to be very slow, if at all, according to Jimmy Parrish, Defense Logistics Agency Installation Support environmental branch chief in Richmond Va. Parrish said that during heavy downfalls, the rain can wash off various contaminants off of vehicles, buildings, and parking lots of the installation into storm drains that run near the James River and Chesapeake Bay. “Sediment runoff can bring with it many natural and toxic components that can cause harm to stream ecosystems,” said Steve Edlavitch, environmental engineer for DLA Installation Support’s Environmental Branch. “Sediment laden runoff containing fertilizers add nitrogen and phosphorous into the creek’s ecosystem. These nutrients cause massive algae growth that leads to depletion in oxygen available for other creatures and decreasing the biodiversity in those affected areas. Runoff laden with agricultural sediments also leads to algae blooms that block the sunlight and hurt its ability to thrive,” Edlavitch said. The bio-retention units help by slowing down the storm water runoff causing the sediments to settle out before entering the local creeks.” The Chesapeake Bay is often subject to algae blooms resulting from nutrients in regional agricultural runoff. These blooms block sunlight and inhibit biodiversity in the Bay, he said. In an effort to slow this stormwater and contaminant run-off, and increase the water’s M

awson Hobbs and Taylor Stagg were skinny, wide-eyed freshmen when their James River High golf team won the Group AAA state championship in 2008. That squad was so loaded with experienced talent, its younger players had no pressure; all they had to do was play their games while learning from their veteran teammates what it took to compete on the highest level of high school golf.

Those lessons should come in handy this season. Hobbs and Stagg are now rising seniors, best friends and the unquestioned leaders of a James River team that many expect to contend for another state title this fall. “This is the best team I’ve been part of since the state championship,” Hobbs said last week after receiving the team trophy following the Rapids’ victory at the Lake Chesdin Invitational. omeday many years from now when she’s old and gray, Lyberty Anderson will reflect on her golf career and have a good laugh about the game’s fickle nature. But by late Saturday afternoon, as she trudged off the 18th green at Richmond Country Club and signed for an 11over-par 83 in her second round of the LPGA Futures Tour Eagle Classic, the 15-year-old Chesterfield County amateur had a

difficult time finding the humor in her plight. In position to reach her goal for the tournament and make the cut after an impressive 72 on Friday – a round that generated considerable buzz among the many local fans who came out specifically to watch the local favorite -- Anderson was unable to sustain the momentum and never got anything going Saturday. RAPIDS from page 6 led James River by claiming medalist honors with a 3-under 69 – the only player to finish under par on a steamy afternoon at the 6,327-yard Lake Chesdin Golf Club layout. Midlothian’s Kyle Hart was second among individuals with a 72. Matoaca’s Jack Field, one of three players to shoot 75, won a scorecard tiebreaker for third place. “I think the key today was my all-around game,” Park said. “If I hit a bad drive, my iron play backed it up. If I hit a bad iron shot, I made a putt.” Park, who transferred to James River from Mills Godwin prior to his sophomore year, gives the Rapids a luxury they haven’t had since 2008: a trio of veteran players who all have the ability to earn medalist honors every time they tee it up. Like the state championship team, this James River squad also has great chemistry; Hobbs said the players probably spend more time trying to beat each other in ping pong and video games than they do playing golf. “We all get along great,” he added. “These guys are my best friends in the school and it’s been that way for four years.” Stagg and Hobbs learned a lot as freshmen from watching the way seniors Nick Austin and Michael McLean set the tone for everyone else, and they’re trying to fill the same role this season. “We definitely have to watch how we act and make sure we’re setting a good example for the younger guys,” Stagg said. James River got off to what coach Scott Hartman called “a good start” by winning the 10-team tournament with a four-player total of 301 – 12 strokes better than runner-up Matoaca and 25 ahead of third-place Atlee. At the same time, Hartman found plenty of room for improvement – especially from his seniors. Stagg hit the ball much better than his score (77) showed and Hobbs finished with a 78 after spending much of his round in rough he described as “weird.” “We have enough depth to give anybody trouble. We just need to score a little better to get under 300,” Hartman said. James River most likely will need to break the 300 barrier as a team if it wants to dethrone defending Central Region champion Deep Run and mount a serious challenge to strong teams like Chantilly at the state tournament. While Deep Run lost one of its top two players to graduation in Jason Schumacher, the Wildcats return a state medalist contender in Chris O’Neill and a battle-tested team that won’t surrender its regional crown without a fight. “They still have a lot of solid players. I think it’s going to be a good duel coming down the stretch,” Stagg said. Park, who noted it’s “more enjoyable”

playing for a team that has several players with the talent to push each other at the top of the starting lineup, said the Rapids haven’t proven anything by winning their first tournament of the 2011 season. They get another chance to make a statement when they face Deep Run and Chantilly in a tri-match today at The Dominion Club. “I want our expectations to be that we can win states, but it’s not going to be easy,” Park added. “We have to chase it. It’s not just sitting there for us.”
