Louisa Hat by Jenn Wisbeck Favorite Ribbed Hat with Slipped Stitch Hem Designed to work in both stretchy and non-stretchy yarns (like alpaca or silk blends). The hat is knit from the bottom up, with a slipped stitch hem to help keep the edge from flaring out. A decorative yarn over round completes the edging and makes the hat more interesting. Instead of the usual ribbing, a slipped stitch ribbing is used to provide negative ease- this helps keep the hat from stretching out too much and keeps the hat in place. Knit in DK weight yarn, pattern includes 8 sizes from preemie to x-large. Includes variations.
Notes Knit in the round from the bottom up. Slip stitch marker as you come to it. The stitch pattern uses slipped stitches every other row to help draw in the fabric; this makes the hat perfect for yarns without much stretch. Directions and notes for variations are included at the end, as are schematics to help you choose the correct size. All pictures of the hat are as the directions are written, without the optional variations. Preemie and 0 to 6 months sizes: The smallest sizes of the hat can be knit solely on double pointed needles, since the body of the hat won’t fit well on a 16 inch circular needle. Make sure to slip the stitches loosely, so the border is not too tight. Omit the border if you are worried about the hat being too tight at the cast on. The YO round is optional- feel free to omit it is you like, it is purely decorative. You can also change the look of the hat by threading ribbon or I-cord through the holes for a bright pop of color.
