Location: Exposition Park, Los Angeles CA Program: Multi-Purpose Hotel The Exposition Park is adjacent to the University Southern California Campus. Because college students tend to share housing, it makes it difficult to have alone time with loved ones. LOVE HOTEL offers shortterm stay with romantic views for various uses such as large group party, overnight stay, and exclusive relaxation activities for lovers. The design challenge was to secure privacy for hotel users. To achieve the maximum sensitivity of visual protection inside the hotel and separation among hotel rooms, a separate entry was provided for hotel users only and the entrance to each units are differentiated in elevation to minimize eye contacts with neighboring hotel guests.

Program: Short-Term Housing This housing project was designed for Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. Murakami strictly maintains a clear boundary between his work time and off time. Therefore I created spaces that reflect his perspectives of life as a writer and life as a non-writer. Two volumes were created to separate these spaces. Murakami’s unique style of writing can be characterized as shapeless but at the same time it can be formed and contained like that of the property of water. His working space overlooks the lake to inspire this poetic creativity. His resting space faces the forest, in which the shift of four seasons can be vividly seen, because Japanese enjoy life surrounded by nature that seasonally changes its face.

Location: Hancock Park, CA Program: Medium-Density Housing The site is located on the border of Hancock Park and Miracle Mile, which is inhabited by upper class residents and middle class residents respectively. Â The BOXED HOUSING encompassed characteristics of the two districts with the design of all units as two story single housing often seen in Hancock Park and securing spatial separation among all the units, which can potentially be used as garden spaces. Â In addition, commercial office spaces were placed on the ground level so that potentials of social interaction is present. Therefore, the BOXED HOUSING does not only provide some sense of protection, separation, and privacy but also potential of community growth and interaction with visitors to the offices.

Program: Housing for 3 Months Stay on a Boat for 6 Crew Members Collaborator: Plastiki and Architecture for Humanity This project was to design an iconic exterior form with a compact but effective and comfortable housing space. The PLASTIKI BOAT set sail in spring of 2010 from San Francisco to Sydney. The aim of the expedition was to bring awareness of marine pollution by plastic waste and opportunity to re-think about waste and resource. To execute and convey Plastiki’s philosophy into the design of the boat, my design team had an intensive research. It resulted in a new proposal to make the pod parts of the boat which contains toilets and bank beds detachable and reusable for temporary housing in a various location in need after natural hazard and so on.

Location: Haiti and Other Places in Need Program: Mobile School and Work Shop Collaborator: Architecture for Humanity The project was to design and build a mobile school and work shop as an emergency kit for disaster areas after natural hazards. Used shipping containers are abundantly available in USA due to its one-way trade with other countries. In addition, it can be transported to anywhere in the world by ship. Therefore, shipping containers are suitable to provide as emergency kits. The strongest impact of this project was that we did actual hands-on fabrication. The experience taught me the joy of handson labor work and led me to recognize the importance of understanding the properties of construction materials for both design esthetics and structural stability.

Location: Las Campanas, Chile Program: Astronomical Research Center LAS CAMPANAS OBSERVATORY is an astronomical research center where astronomers stay for weeks to carry out their researches. To provide productive work and relaxing off time, I separated the research facility and its lodge. The site location is surrounded by nothing but natural environment: sky and desert mountains. For the lodge design, therefore, I focused on enhancing the presence of the natural surroundings, especially the view of the night sky with stars because the star lovers never get tired of them. So I tried to design the lodge building as invisible as possible so that interior space melts into and become one with night sky. Also I tried to have easy access and view to exterior space from all interior spaces.

Location: Kula, Turkey Program: Public Spa Park City of Kula in Turkey has a plan to build a national park with its natural resource of hot springs and a business plan of spa tourism development sequentially has been proposed. My goal in the project was to create a city revitalization. With the understanding of sustainable tourism, I aimed for creating a tourism system that benefits on both tourists and local residents. Therefore, instead of producing only an exclusive high-end spa to tourists in the city to aim at short term quick profit, I hybridize it with a public park where tourists can truly learn and experience the real time local life at the same time the locals can take advantage of public spa facility to relax and improve their health and social interaction.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM should:
[1] Make optimal use of environmental resources that constitute a key element in tourism development, maintaining essential ecological processes and helping to conserve natural heritage and biodiversity.
Source: United Nations World Tourism Organization (2004)
[2] Respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities, conserve their built and living cultural heritage and traditional values, and contribute to inter-cultural understanding and tolerance.
$
[3] Ensure viable, long-term economic operations, providing socio-economic benefits to all stakeholders that are fairly distributed, including stable employment and incomeearning opportunities and social services to host communities, and contributing to poverty alleviation.
