What's for Dinner? A culinary treasure in Midtown, Fork it Over, offers one of the most innovative and practical services for our occupied generation. Professionals that work long hours and over-scheduled parents frequently find eating right and eating delicious a chore they are too tired to attempt after a full day. Limited options consist of expensive fine dining, inexpensive fast food, or worse yet, staring into a refrigerator trying to decide what might be the easiest thing to fix. None of the above necessarily result in a fresh or wise choice, but Fork it Over has the answer to your meal-time woes. Michelle Campbell, owner of the gourmet market and catering business, emails her clientele a weekly menu of entrees and

sides. Customers then place their orders by noon on Thursday and stop by the next week to pick up their healthy and delicious meals. Basically, they have a personal chef at their service. Fork it Over’s patrons simply open the refrigerator and are minutes away from a tasty meal. Like Michelle says, “you just add temperature. A recent weekly menu included beef stroganoff with egg noodles, Veracruz style tilapia over pinto beans, tomatoes & olives, pork au poivre, or grilled dijon chicken breast with corn salsa. One could choose any two sides such as tarragon-garlic steamed asparagus, carrots with honey & lemon, or scalloped potatoes with gouda. Her soup choice was Thai chicken & coconut, salad was spicy continued on page 20

welcome to the neighborhood Main Event Boutique For years Arshula Lynn has been providing her clients with accessories at her Main Event Hair Salon on Marshall Ave. Recently, Arshula decided to make a business of it by opening a clothing boutique that is for women of all sizes, colors and ages. The business major and her artist husband, Jerry, offer clothing that ranges from “casual to over-the-top” and is affordable. Soon Arshula plans to carry shoes, boots, and coats. 1859 Madison Ave; 347-3711 The Upper Crust Arthur and Tina Seay do not have a background in the restaurant business, but when opportunity knocked the husband and wife duo couldn’t resist. Recently, they opened a restaurant by Crump Stadium that offers healthy soul food (they use no pork) in a familyoriented setting that seats 75 people. The Upper Crust is open for lunch and dinner and has live music on the weekend, varying from a DJ, band or musician. Some of the most popular menu items include fried green tomatoes and chicken and dumplings.

Their greens sell out daily, so get there early! 326 S Cleveland; 435-6264 Dance Works, Inc. A new neighbor in Midtown, but certainly not new to Memphis, Artistic Director Karen J. Zissoff moved her studio to Union Avenue Methodist Church this summer. She has been excited to watch the program, now in its 22nd year, continue to grow. Overton Park Pizze Stone Chef Duncan Aiken says his new restaurant was 20 years in the making. All this time Aiken’s been baking pies for his friends, perfecting the three-day process for making his artisan-style dough. His friend and business partner Scott Rambin agrees that’s a lot of

pizza, but he’s not complaining, since he was the recipient of many of those pizza pies. In addition to his savory crust, Aiken and his staff make their own mozzarella, sauce, bread and much of their pasta. They seek to use local companies whenever possible. Takeout is available. Open from 11 until 9 or later, closed on Sunday. 1545 Overton Park; 725-7806 Larry Davis, LMT You’re in good hands with Larry Davis, Midtown’s newest licensed massage therapist. An LMT in practice for eight years, Larry began his training during his childhood as he massaged family members. He received his formal training at the Massage Institute of Memphis. Although some view massage as a luxury, Larry is quick to point out the health benefits of massage, including improved sleep, better

circulation, increased range of motion, reduced headaches and stress, and greater relaxation. Open by appointment. Larry shares space with Midtown Acupuncture. 917 S Cooper; 503-8925 Attorney Leah Roen “My motto for my work is mediate, don’t litigate!” Leah explains, as she tells of other attorney’s clients fighting for months over assets only to walk away with nothing. An attorney for almost 20 years, she practices mediation, civil, commercial litigation and arbitration. 895 South Cooper; 473-1710 Fantastic Sams Not new to the neighborhood, but newly-located across from Main Event Boutique, LeAnna Ferguson and her crew offer an affordable and quality alternative to highend salons in a much larger space than their prior location down the street. Unbeknownst to many is the fact that the franchise started in Memphis 35 years ago, and Ferguson, a former lawyer with the District Attorney’s office, is happy to be a part of it. As well known intersections in

this city go—Madison/Cooper, Union/Second, Germantown/I-40 —the intersection of Cooper and Young in Midtown stands toe to toe, goes curb to curb, with any one of them. Union and Second has been given to the tourists, Overton Square belongs to the 1970s and

very idea of neighborhood. Some 85,000 Memphians will make a pilgrimage to renew their vows to a part of the city they may have left or never known; but which so many still call home. I went to my first Cooper-Young Festival about 19 years ago when it was little more than a booth of

ENERGY FOR THE SOUL OF MEMPHIS Germantown Parkway and I-40 is the sole property of cars and those who enjoy sitting in them. Cooper and Young, however, belongs to a neighborhood and the people who call it their home, their dining room and their front porch. With tastes for all, from sushi to shopping, from a cold pint to acupuncture, Cooper-Young is the personality gene in the helix of Memphis’ DNA. Coming this September 19, as it has every fall for 21 years, the soul will be reinvigorated and baptized anew with the annual CooperYoung Festival. The festival is a day long celebration of, not just this favorite intersection, but of the

junkyard art, a musician plugged into an extension cord and some neighborhood folk standing around drinking beer in the street. What it has become, with its 370 some odd booths of artisans and purveyors of all things found, scrounged, crafted and culled, three stages of music and eclectic foods, is a testament to so many neighbors with vision and a neighborhood that saw beyond its own geographical boundaries. In those early years, I didn’t have children, but now that I have four, I look forward to taking them. I want them to see, feel and taste what a community is and can put together when it comes together. continued on page 19

Massage Envy is the nation’s largest single employer of professional licensed massage therapists (LMT’s) with more than 8,000 nationwide; 22 at their Midtown location. But don’t worry--the Midtown therapists customize every massage to meet your specific needs. The company’s LMT’s offer Swedish massage for overall body relaxation, deep tissue massage
