EZ Transit Passes Transitioning to TAP Cards, Beginning Sept. 1 The EZ transit pass -- the monthly pass good for travel on 25 different public transit carriers throughout Los Angeles County -- will begin the transition from paper to TAP cards Sept. 1, making it easier for customers to travel without transfers, renew their passes each month and replace their cards, should they be lost of stolen. The EZ transit pass is one of the last paper passes to transition to smart card technology. The EZ transit pass will be electronically loaded onto the familiar blue TAP card for regular riders or the orange Reduced TAP ID card for senior and/or disabled riders. A stamp with the month, year and zone designation will be affixed to the front of each card so that the card can be visually inspected on nonTAP systems. To help customers with the transition, the new reusable
TAP cards will be free with the purchase of an EZ transit pass for a limited time. The move from EZ transit pass paper passes to TAP will continue until Nov. 1, for senior and disabled patrons to give them extra time to apply for and receive their new reduced-fare TAP ID cards. Applications can be downloaded from the web at metro. net/riding/fares/senior. They also are available at all Metro Customer Centers and pass sales outlets. The new EZ transit passes on TAP will make it easier to renew the passes each month. When an EZ transit pass expires, another pass can be loaded onto the card at a pass sales outlet, or at the official TAP website: taptogo. net. EL MONTE CITY COUNCIL NAMES DAYLE KELLER INTERIM CITY MANAGER By Mario Villegas El Monte, CA – The El Monte City Council has appointed Dayle Keller to the post of Interim City Manager. Ms. Keller comes to El Monte with 23 years of experience as a municipal government administrator, retiring eight years ago from another San Gabriel Valley community. Keller’s appointment begins Sept. 4, said Mayor Andre Quintero, who noted that her selection by the Council was unanimous. The retiree will oversee City operations while the search continues for a candidate to fill the position permanently. “We are thrilled to have found a person with a background as deep as Ms. Keller’s,” Quintero said. “Her experience as a City Manager will help guide us through the process of finding a permanent City Manager.” Keller’s resume includes 12 years as a City Manager/Chief Executive Officer. Keller served as the Chief Executive Officer of Baldwin Park from 2000 to 2004. She has held city manager posts
in Taft and Beaumont. Most recently, she was the Interim City Manager for the City of American Canyon in Napa County, and then for the City of Lawndale from July, 2010 through April, 2011. She has a strong background in managing and evaluating operations and services. She possesses significant experience in finance, personnel, labor relations, economic development, and redevelopment. “I have a strong commitment to improving the quality of life in communities and to building excellence in the organizations serving those communities,” Keller said. She has a master’s degree in public administration with a public finance emphasis from Cal State Fullerton, where she also earned a bachelor’s degree in political science with a public administration concentration. Keller, who is not applying for the permanent position, succeeds Rene Bobadilla, who resigned to become city manager for the city of Huntington Park.

Arcadia Rotarians Make Donation to Rotoplast Program By Anne Donofrio-Holter Arcadia, CA -- Arcadia Rotarians had an opportunity to hear many heartwarming stories of how the Rotoplast program is providing medical treatment for children with cleft lip and palate who would otherwise not receive needed constructive surgery or procedures beyond the scope of local physicians, Rotaplast International, Inc., derived from the words Rotary and plastic surgery, “was founded in 1992 by Dr. Angelo Capozzi and then Rotary Club President Peter Lagarias in collaboration with the Rotary Club of San Francisco to facilitate a surgical program in La Serena, Chile to treat children with the cleft lip and palate anomaly who would otherwise not receive surgical intervention.” “This is accomplished by 400 volunteers, 20-plus board members and six paid staff,” said speaker, and Pico Rivera Rotarian, Dr. Rose Marie Joyce. “A mission is announced and any organization may agree to sponsor 100% of the mission, or share the cost, ranging from $75,000 to
$100,000 depending on destination, between two or more organizations. Each mission, about 15 per year, provides surgery for approximately 100 children.” To date, more than 13,000 surgeries have been performed in countries around the world including Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela, Togo, El Salvador, Peru, Columbia and Brazil at no cost to the child’s family. “Cleft lip and palate is a birth defect that poses serious consequences,” explained Joyce. “If not treated, many children could suffer from malnutrition due to an inability to properly swallow food or from speech impediments than can impair their level of education and social development.” “Dr. Joyce's Rotoplast presentation was a great reminder to me that being a member of Rotary International means we contribute to real change in the lives of people both in our local neighborhood and in the neighborhoods of countries far away,” said Rosie Mares. “This was a very moving
and poignant program that opened my eyes to the possibilities of Rotarians being able to help people in any part of the world,” said Waleed Delawari. “It all begins with an idea. And with our own commitment, drive and execution, we can make it happen.” “I was so very moved years ago at a Rotary district assembly when I first viewed the Rotoplast video,” said Eric Barter, Arcadia Rotary Club president. “Hundreds of kids undergoing a surgical procedure that would turn each and every one of their lives around in just a day! This program typifies what Rotary is all about.” At the conclusion of the program, Barter presented Joyce with a $1,000 donation to the program on behalf of the club. YES VOTE ON MEASURE K By Edward Martinez Baldwin Park, CA -- The wait is finally over for Sierra Vista High School in the Baldwin Park Unified School District. Principal Jackie White said “after eight years of planning and a few setbacks, our new “state of the art”, three story building will open for the beginning of the school year, thanks to the support of our community and the hard work of our Board of Education, our Superintendent, Mr. Skvama and over a hundred district employees.” The 37 classrooms feature computer labs, photo labs, science labs, English and math. The new building replaces the portable classrooms that have been on campus over the years. Sierra Vista High School was opened in 1961 and is one of two High Schools in the Baldwin Park Unified School District. The local community voted for Measure K, an approximately 75.5 million dollar school bond in the November 2006 election. It passed with a 72% yes vote. The bond will improve district schools with upgrades such as electrical, roofing, plumbing and handicapped accessibility. Funds can only be spent to improve

Open letter to city council and El Monte Citizens: I am opposed to adding another tax on the citizens of El Monte. To say it is for health and obesity is shameful. It really is about "MORE TAXES." We should be trying to reduce our debt and find ways to limit our spending. Our state and our federal government are trying to SPEND enough money to get us out of our
down turn. But it does not work. The state especially has hurt us by taking more and more money to try and fix their situation but it has made their situation worse and has hurt cities and schools. Some thoughts I have had, is to put "caps" or limits on our budgets. We set a budget but do not adhere to it. We should not give advances on business and conference expenses. Laurent has created a song that transcends the parallels of reality and reverie. “Time Meant Nothing” is alleviating, fragile, and pure catharsis. This may not be the ideal summer jam, but it’ll mollify your body during the long summer nights. This single will be officially released on July 19 via the Revera Corporation. Lemonade – “Ice Water” – This sexy, utterly addictive, heavily doused in synths track is the premiere summer song. “Ice Water” comes straight off Lemonade’s recently released debut LP, “Diver.” 80s inspired vocals, highly effective dance beats, and just pure awesome all the way though, “Ice Water” will cool you off no matter the conditions. If this get-down-and-dirty indie cut isn’t playing at the clubs, there’s something seriously awry with the current state of electronic-pop. By Joe Castillo Great Escape …. Fifty years ago, Frank Morris, John and Clarence Anglin, escaped from what was thought to be an inescapable jail located on a secluded island 1.5 miles away from the mainland. Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay, and has been used as a lighthouse facility,military base, military prison and finally a federal prison until 1963. The island was first named in 1775 by the Spanish surveyor Juan Manuel de Ayala, who named it ‘La Isla de los Alcatraces’, the Island of the Pelicans. The earliest recorded owner of the island was Julian Workman, which was the baptismal name of William Workman, who had been awarded the Rancho La Puente land grant in present day Hacienda Heights. Workman was a friend of Governor Pio Pico, and was awarded a number of large land holdings in California as part of this friendship. In 1848, John Fremont bought the island from F.P.F. Temple for $5,000, and presented it to the United States Government as a key military post. However, when Fremont sought reimbursement, the government seized the island and took possession without compensating Fremont. The Federal Bureau of Prisons used Alcatraz as a federal prison starting in 1933 and its location in the cold, shark infested waters outside of San Francisco were thought to be the perfect deterrent for any escape attempts.
No one ever escaped Alcatraz and survived with the exception of Frank Morris and his accomplices. Morris devised an intricate plan to escape the island, digging through soft jail cell walls with only a small spoon and building a raft made of sewn raincoats. Papier-mâché heads were made and used as placements in their cell beds when the escapees were digging through the inside of the prison wall system during the evening hours. Morris and the Anglins were never found but stories continue regarding their survival. One story is that a Norwegian freighter picked them up and allowed to stay until their first port-of-call was made. Another story documents that they made it to Angel Island, where parts of their raincoat raft were found, and then died by the elements or at the hands of each other. The official case is still open and U.S. Marshall Michael Dyke is the only investigator assigned to the case. Dyke has his own theory and feels that two escapees survived but has no proof to support his theory. He continues to investigate the case and has logged countless bytes of data on his own investigation. In 1979, Clint Eastwood stared as Frank Morris in the movie ‘Escape from Alcatraz’, which details the bold escape but only concludes that the trio escaped the island and their survival is unknown. The case will stay open until the last escapee turns 100 years old….

Have you had enough of this oppressive heat? The temperatures have been hovering at 100 degrees for two weeks in the San Gabriel Valley. Temple City did the right thing when they opened their first cooling center last week. We have a vulnerable segment of our population, mostly seniors and infants who do not do well in the heat. These folks either do not have air conditioning or they cannot afford the Edison bill to be comfortable. We live in a desert environment where we can expects a number of days with high temperatures, but when you couple that with high humidity you have problems. The City’s cooling center in the Council Chambers is a lot better than mine with 105 pounds of live steam pressure and 105 degrees inside temperature. You cannot use refrigeration cooling inside a dry cleaners with steam, only the old swamp coolers. It is not an easy thing to say we are establishing a cooling center. This is a public place where you are inviting residents to come. Insurance needs are a concern, having emergency medical help is a must. Fortunately, Fire Station 47 is immediately next to the cooling center. The city must also provide staffing for the Council Chambers, AKA Cooling Center. Temple City is also encouraging residents to check on neighbors and family members who may be especially sensitive to extreme heat. You are encouraged to drink plenty of water, limiting strenuous activities to cooler times of the day, wearing lightweight and comfortable clothing, and avoid prolonged time in the sun. Jerry says “remember, you can’t drink to much water because guess what is going to happen with what you don’t need?” A Neighborhood Watch meeting was just held at St Luke’s Catholic Church for Area 5. Kudos to Temple City and the Sheriff’s Department for re-inventing this important program. In the past it was hit and miss if a certain block wanted a watch meeting. There would maybe be 4-5 people in attendance. A new approach was to break up the city into 12 geographical
areas and have an area watch meeting once a month at a location within that area. Our local schools, churches, parishes, and synagogues have been very receptive to hosting these meetings. Chinese and Spanish translation is always available. The 75+ attendees were treated to a free taco bar dinner and childcare was provided with family friendly movies under watchful supervision. The two-hour session was led by Deputy Rick Adams, Motor deputy Mike Baker, Sergeant Ron Miranda, Public Safety officer Bryan Ariizumi, Community Preservation officer Jonathan Aceves and Viet Tran. Many times Temple Station Captain Christopher Nee attends and gives a personal word of greeting. The session included neighborhood crime trends, crime prevention, neighborhood improvements and emergency preparedness including an invitation to become a part of the next training session for CERT (Community Emergency Response Teams). Deputy Adams is a veteran Sheriff and a product of Temple City with family still living here. He led the discussion encouraging interaction and questions from the interested audience. One of the humorous events of the meeting was when a resident asked of motor officer Mike Baker, “why don’t people pull over when they see and hear lights and sirens?”. Mike’s response was “I have my lights and sirens going and the people are passing me on the street as I am going to the emergency”. Temple City is at the end of two summer programs. The Citizen’s Academy was designed to help Temple City residents and business owners become better acquainted with the nuts and bolts of City Hall. The 24 participants began their two-hour sessions on May 24 with knowledgeable staff facilitating the meetings with PowerPoint presentations and field trips throughout the city. While I gave credit to both events for their charm, I suggested Rosemead’s event was more inclusive because it was at a public space, was well publicized, needed no reservation, and offered community tables for local non-profits to distribute information. Not everyone agreed, and below are a few excerpts from emails we received followed by an abridged response I sent to those who wrote. The complete emails and my letter are available online. Names are omitted unless where permission was given to publish. “San Gabriel has repeatedly received honors for its National Night Out programs and because of the community’s engagement, we have one of the most effective Neighborhood Watch programs in the country….I resent the fact that the article presents a negative view of something in which we take such pride and gives the idea that those of us involved are part of some type of “exclusive club”.” “Your article was completely out of line. It should have been presented as an "opinion" piece; not the news. I question your journalism background. You are entitled to express your opinion; but it should be labeled as an opinion.” “My wife and I are Captains of our Neighborhood Watch on our street in Northwest San Gabriel. Your point of view written in the Mid valley News 8/15/12, concerning a National Night Out gathering in the Rosemead City Park is not always better. The population of Rosemead as of July 2011 is 54,154 and San Gabriel is 40,005. We had 17 people gathered at our home which was a smaller turnout than last year. I think it was because of the hot weather. If the 40 block parties in San Gabriel had at least 17 people at those homes, that would
have been 680 people. That is 30 more people than the 650 people gathered in Rosemead City Park where the city has a population of 14,000 more people than what San Gabriel has.”

Sean Telles’ Response: In the case of San Gabriel’s National Night Out (NNA), the 43 events in question were not made public and I have yet to receive the information from the city or from Alex Acosta on where the events took place and who led each event. When I asked for a list, I was first told to show up the day of at the Mission Playhouse, and that I would attend the events with a city official. When I let Alex know I had to cover Rosemead’s event as well, he then gave me a list of 9 addresses without names or phone numbers. The one house I visited from that list was not involved in the event, and the woman who answered the door was actually scared to see me. I’m sure this was just a typo, but it shows the importance of public information. I have since again asked for the complete list and have yet to receive it. I do believe San Gabriel

"San Gabriel Valley Humane Society's first annual Artwalk and Foodtruck event was a huge success! Approximately 200 visitors attended the event featuring artwork painted by the shelter's cats and dogs who are awaiting adoption. Some of the artists were actually adopted, along with their artwork! Games, Raffles, Kids' Crafts, and lots of yummy food was on hand (and being enjoyed by both human and canine visitors alike!). Canine visitors even had the opportunity to create their own artwork too. Tours of the shelter, originally scheduled every half hour, had to be increased to every fifteen minutes to accommodate all the new visitors to our little shelter, with many of them stopping by the next day to adopt!

Network for a Healthy California Provides Nutrition Training for MVSD Teachers El Monte, CA – MVSD hosted a District Wide Summer Institute Nutrition Training, sponsored by the Network for a Healthy California. One hundred and five teachers participated in the full day training at Twin Lakes where registered dieticians, nutrition experts, and consultants from the Los Angeles County Office of Education presented a plate full of information on the important role nutrition and physical activity play in the education process. “This training was paid for by our partnership with the Network for a Healthy California,” said Susan Delgado, MVSD Food Service
Director. “I’m thrilled that so many teachers signed up to participate and in addition to the training they will each receive a goody bag filled with nutrition related supplies, educational materials and decorations for their classrooms as well as kits for the cooking in the classroom lessons.” The teachers were divided

into four groups and rotated through four sessions during the training. Session topics included “My Plate/Nutrition 101” where they used technology and computer
based programs to research food groups and the healthiest way to divide up their plates with meals encompassing the fruits, grains, vegetables, proteins and dairy. The “What’s in Your Cart” session focused on nutrition facts and how to read labels to ensure you are making the right choices when selecting your foods. Teachers
participated in a nutrition label scavenger hunt as they searched for food items high in vitamins, minerals and fiber; and low sugar, sodium and saturated fats. The “Harvest of the Month/Cooking in the Classroom” session encouraged teachers to bring cooking lessons into the classroom. They worked in teams brainstorming ways to connect the cooking and food to the California standards, and across the curriculum. Looking at a mandarin orange, teachers found ways to incorporate math by having students divide the orange into sections and figuring out the radius, diameter, area and volume. To hit the social studies component students could research the fruit’s history and origin, to explore science they could study how the fruit grows and its life cycle and to incorporate writing they could write a poem or descriptive essay about the fruit. By Joe Torosian “I can’t think of the finish.”--Chico Marx “Funny, but I can’t think of anything else.” Groucho Marx I wrote my first Fanview column in late October of 1998. Since that time I’ve written over 1,200 of them. Some were harder than others to write. Some flew from brain to fingers to keyboard...Some started with a fifteen minute blank stare at the screen. Here’s the thing...the columns that I wrote where all of synapses were firing like the big guns of a World War II battleship often re-read a month or years later as flat, stupid, syrupy ridiculous. While the stuff that was a struggle, the stuff that felt like I was trying to rake the yard with a toothbrush, that stuff still breaths. In fact it looks like something someone better and smarter would have written. Sometimes it actually looks alien. If you’re writing fiction and you come to me and say you have writers block...okay. I’m not going to argue, but if you tell me you have writers block when it comes to getting your sportswriting duties done. Then at worst I would call you a liar, at best I would call you lazy. Someone said once that eighty percent of life is just showing up. If you keep showing up good things happen. That means you show up when you’re tired, when you’re ticked off, when you’re happy, when you’re lacking inspiration. You show up and do your job. This isn’t about just writing a column, this is about everything life isn’t it? I’m not only going to be a good parent when I feel like it, I’m going to be a good parent when the microwave and air conditioner are broken. I’m going to be a good parent whether or not I’ve fought with my boss or my friends. I’m going to be a good parent whether I’m sick or not. Some days might be better than others, but I will never know that, or come to realize that, unless I show up. I’ve had fifteen years to figure this thing out in regards to my column, but for someone in another place...Say, a local football player...You only get a couple of months to keep showing up. There’s going to be the injury to the key teammate, there’s going to be the guy you think is vital who will walk away, you’re going to have that nagging bruise, that nagging sprain, and the weather is going to turn (or in our case get worse)...and you’re going to feel like phoning it in. All I can say to you is keep showing up. If this is the last line I ever Cont. Page 11 write, just

A solid offensive line was jolted when left guard Hector Lopez, a talented left guard, decided not to play. That position has been filled by stud middle linebacker Dominic Hilo. The change that didn’t come was after a heated spring/summer battle at quarterback incumbent starter Michael Moran has held off Anthony Flores. “Anthony had a great summer, but when we got under helmets and pads Moran’s experience just stood out,” said Williams. Monrovia Sets Sights on Three
Monrovia, CA – For years Monrovia was the team without a CIF title. Now the Wildcats are setting their sights on a third championship in three years. CIF has made it a little more difficult to for the Cats to accomplish that goal by moving the Alpha League into the Mid- Valley Division. In case you’re not aware the Alpha features such powerhouses as Sierra Canyon and Paraclete. On paper, Monrovia seems more than capable of a threepeat. When you have a roster loaded with players such as George Frazier, Anthony Craft, Blake Heyworth, Brett Walsh, Mason Bryant, Isaac Miravet…etc. returning it’s tough to see them falling short. Nobody will touch them in the Rio Hondo and just like last year, some predict they will run the regular season table. The Wildcats lost three games in 2011 (Arcadia, San Dimas, South Hills) before reeling off ten straight to win the title. This year’s non league schedule could be a test as well. Ready or not it's here. For the first time in recent memory the football season kicks off on August 23. Have all the coaching vacancies even been filled yet? Have all the transfers been approved? Have all the transfers been completed? Actually the season kicked off Saturday night when Crespi traveled to Arizona and beat Salpointe Catholic 35-20. Opening night on August 18? Did anybody take a dead period? Most of the coaches I talked to don't like it. Families plan their vacations in August and some had to cut them short to accommodate the season. “I mean school will not be in session yet. We won't start until two more weeks. Why are we starting the season in the middle of summer?,” a local coach told me. “It's hard enough getting players out here but now we start games two weeks before school does?” The heat might be a factor as well. Can you imagine the play-
ers strapping on the helmets and pads and going full throttle when it's nearly 100 degrees outside? Well like it or not, it's here and the coaches and players are ready to go. The spotlight Thursday night will be on Citrus College as Bonita and San Dimas square off in the Smudgepot. The game which used to alternate between the two schools will now be played at Citrus on a permanent basis. “It's just a lot less expensive,” said San Dimas Coach Bill Zernickow. “I know for our school it would cost about 12,000 more to bring in bleachers, etc. and play the game on campus.” The Saints are loaded at running back as usual. Everybody knows about Jake Payton but he's only part of the problem for opposing defensive coordinators. There's also transfer Reece Alvarado, Andrew Espinosa, Denzel Mitchell, and Adam Casillas. Zernickow just takes one back out and brings in another one. Former San Dimas running back Dillon Corona (class of 2012), who is now an assistant on Zernickow's staff, pretty much summed it up. “Oh we always have a lot of backs,” he said. I don't see Bonita stopping the Saints running game. There should be a lot of points put up
on the board but I like San Dimas by a couple of touchdowns. The Saints should win the Valle Vista going away. They might get pushed by Northhview who has guys like Roy Torres, Javon Taylor and Victor Garcia all returning. The Vikings were young last year and has almost everybody back. Nobody is talking about Covina for obvious reasons. Last year was the Colts window with a senior class that had been together for years. Coach Joe Brown is keeping it positive and is looking forward to the season. The Colts stayed with South Hills in the scrimmage Friday night and will be counting on guys like Darren Torres, Evan Stretton and David Gonzalez to keep them in the Valle Vista hunt. Monrovia, who looks like the class of the Mid-Valley Division again has to contend with a new league this year. ing regarding my concerns about how the city distributes information. I also voiced my concern that San Gabriel is the only city in our surrounding area that does not give its residents access to City Council meetings – either through television or online. Other cities are actively getting their residents to participate and provide feedback. Cities like Temple City offer residents month-long workshops to understand how their city is run. South El Monte offers regular bike rides with the mayor and advertises these events through new, free technologies like Facebook and Twitter. When I mentioned this to Mayor Sawkins he asked me to email him information, but neither Mayor Sawkins nor other councilmembers responded. Other interesting programs I’ve seen around the valley which develop community are Temple City’s contests to showcase the musical talent of its youth, and sleepovers in the park for whole families to enjoy. Rosemead offers a free chain link fence removal program, and is starting an adult basketball league. Something to think about as well is that this summer, San Gabriel was the only city to not have a free summer concert series for its residents. The Circle the Square event was nice, but it was a one shot deal that many missed. I take nothing away from the charm of San Gabriel’s NNO or in Alex Acosta’s contributions to the city – as stated in my article - but I do think it celebrated the night in a way that left many not knowing about the event, and missed a chance to teach each others who live in our city about resources available to them. I was recently at an event at the San Gabriel library where an adult woman asked whether it cost money to call 911. In one of the fastest changing cities in Southern California, we need to make sure we are keeping pace building community and civically educating - and that means spending time together getting to know each other. Ultimately, that is our own hands, but allinclusive community events provide a wonderful catalyst for that which other cities, like Rosemead and Temple City are taking advantage of more often than San Gabriel. Parks and Recreation, better known as the fun department or as our City Manager Jose Pulido calls it “Making Memories” will be concluding ten concerts in the park. Enthusiastic audiences began setting out their chairs and blankets 12 hours before the concerts. Each Wednesday evening over 1,500 were treated to great music, dancing, food, and friends in the cool of the evening. I am planning to once again to attend the El Monte City Council meeting in September to see what they are going to do with the complete ban of all fireworks. El Monte has a new interim City Manager. Note to El Monte Council members: in interviewing for the new permanent City Manager and the candidate says he wants to retire in El Monte, I’m warning you don’t do it, that is a big red flag. They did the Chicken Dance, played the Berry Blast Fast game, had thumb wars and skipped, galloped and hip bumped throughout the classroom. “Our Food Service Department is very happy we were able to provide this training for our teachers and I am grateful to Geri Lorenzano, Nutritional Specialist who was instrumental in coordinating this day,” said Delgado. “In addition to the grant funding this training, it provided an opportunity for classified employees in our Food Service department to earn some money this summer as they were hired to help prepare handouts, folders, goody bags, and prepare lunch for the training. Our partnership with the Network has been wonderful and will continue to benefit our kids and families greatly this school year.”
