Thanksgiving is celebrated around the World in many different ways. It seems “the Egyptians were thankful to the gods of the Nile for providing water for their crops; the Greeks celebrated with a festival when there was a good harvest; the Romans honored the goddess of grain, Ceres and thanked her for food; the Mayans ate turkey and corn at their harvest festival; the English believed a spirit lived in their crops and celebrated a good harvest; the Chinese believed that the moon plowed the heavens and their ceremony “Chung Ch’ui” honors the good harvest,” just to name a few. But, historically, Thanksgiving Day celebrates the Pilgrims coming to North
America. The very first Thanksgiving celebration took place in 1621. However, there was no regular national Thanksgiving Day in the United States for many years. History books tell us that a woman by the name of Sarah Josepha Hale, the editor of “Godley’s Lady’s Book” worked for 30 years to promote the idea of a national Thanksgiving Day. Besides her columns, she wrote letters to various presidents asking for their support. Then, in 1863, President Lincoln issued a proclamation making the last Thursday of November in that year “a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent
Father.” For 75 years the tradition continued. Finally in 1939, President Roosevelt “proclaimed Thanksgiving Day to be celebrated one week earlier.” Why? It was suppose to help businesses by extending the shopping period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, Congress finally declared that after 1941 the fourth Thursday of November would be observed as Thanksgiving Day and would be a legal
holiday. Besides delicious homecooked food, Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday to be celebrated with family and friends. Although we look forward to the traditional turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, yams, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, Thanksgiving Day is the perfect time to reflect and be grateful for all of the blessings in our lives. The jam packed auditorium was filled with proud parents, families, teachers, and administrators as 92 students scoring a perfect score of 600 on the either the Language Arts or Math section of the 2013 California STAR test were honored at the El Monte City School District Board of Education meeting. Board members honored each student with a special certificate and Superintendent Dr. Maribel Garcia presented each student with a medal to commemorate their outstanding achievement. “My daughter always works hard in everything she does. We are very proud of her.” boasted proud mother of fifth grader Manaya Alonzo from Wilkerson School. All fourteen schools were represented at the event held at the Columbia School Au-
ditorium preceding the regular School Board meeting. Each principal called student names for their respective schools and students walked up to receive their awards. School board members Roberto Cruz, Cathi Eredia, Kien Lam, Mike Barrios, and Elizabeth Rivas personally congratulated each student and then posed with students for photos as anxious camera
wielding parents jockeyed for the best camera angle. Along with the colorful banner and glittery “Perfect” stars pasted along the walls of the auditorium, a positive festive mood was definitely in the air. “This is a great way to show the hard work that both the schools and the district have done in terms of boosting student achievement,”
said Teresa Pinedo, principal of Rio Vista School. Although test results are only one measure of student achievement, they have become increasingly important in assessing student learning. El Monte City School District celebrates these perfect scoring students and all of the teachers, staff and administrators who support all of the students of EMCSD.

Around Town by Mavis Hansen HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Are you in anticipation of that Thanksgiving Dinner or have you already had more than you should have? If you want to work off those extra calories, how about an Aeroquatics Turkey Workout? On Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2013 a medley of aerobic workouts will be presented at the El Monte Aquatic Center. The floor aerobics will be held from 6-7 a.m. and the water aerobics from 7-8 a.m. You may participate in both sessions for the price of one. The 2 for 1 deal is only $5.00. More information 626-580-2213. The EL MONTE HISTORICAL SOCIETY QUARTERLY TEA was held on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at the El Monte Community Center, 3130 Tyler Avenue in El Monte. The meeting was held at the Community Center. The afternoon Tea was hosted by the El Monte Women’s Club who provided a variety of delicious refreshments prior to the meeting. The afternoon program was presented by students from the Valle Lindo School District. Students took everyone on a “Sentimental Journey,” acting out 150 years of the history of our community by playing various persons from 1863 to the present. A most interesting and informative afternoon given by wonderful and very talented students. A reminder of Changes in Museum Hours: The Museum will be open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Appointments may be made for special events. Tyler Avenue, El Monte. The program will focus on Veterans. Luncheon Hostess for the November meeting will be Leticia Rivera. Members have been asked to bring donations of candy which will be given to the students of the El Monte High School Choir when they perform at the December meeting Christmas Program. Membership is open to all women in the community who are interested in service to the community, and the Federation objectives. Meetings are held the 4th Tuesday of each month at 11:00 am. Movember. It looks like a typo, but it’s not. November is the month that is dedicated to awareness of men’s health issues. Take the M from men and replace the N in November, and vuola! Movember! This month highlights risks to men’s health like prostate and testicular cancers. My school, San Gabriel Mission High School, is an all-girls school but we took a stand for men’s health awareness anyway. You might ask yourself, “What would an all-girls school be doing learning about men’s health issues?” Initially, I thought the same. Then,
I realized, I have a lot of important men in my life. We all do. They are fathers, grandfathers, brothers, sons, uncles, friends, co-workers, and teachers. And so, it’s my part of my Christian tradition to be not just my sister’s keeper, but my brother’s as well. Women have a good sense of how to take care of themselves and know when something’s wrong. Men might need some reminders occasionally. As a young woman with so many men I care about, maybe I can say something or relay information. Who knows, what I say just might make the differ-

‘Time Jockey ’ Savannah History by Joe Castillo
Cemetery History …. Historic Savannah Memorial Cemetery in Rosemead dates back to the founding of the San Gabriel Valley. The cemetery was founded in 1851 by many of the early settlers who came to El Monte by wagon train in the late 1840’s. The El Monte area was once part of the San Francisquito land grant with rich soil and an abundant amount of water. The water table was so high that when a site was needed for a graveyard, Savannah was the only location which could provide the necessary high ground to allow for burials without water being reached. Henry Dalton owned the property at that time and while riding on his property noticed two graves on the location. He set aside the surrounding two acres and eventually over 50% of the original wagon train settlers were buried in the cemetery. The only other cemetery in the area was the one at the San Gabriel Mission and one had to be Catholic to be buried there. Savannah accepted all denominations. Over the years, Savannah fell into various stages of disrepair and dilapidation. Overrun with weeds, the Cemetery once sought help in getting cleaned up and remove the pesky weeds. Students were hired to remove them and thought the best way was to burn them. The plan worked but more in addition to the weeds being burned so too were the wooden crosses which were located throughout the cemetery. Many of the original grave stones were made of granite from Escondido quarries. The granite was of a lesser quality which degraded easily. The granite lasted only 70 years at best and eventually the markers became faded and the dates etched in each soon became unreadable….. 150 Year Ago …. On October 3, 1863, in the heat of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November as a day Give Thanks. The date became known as Thanksgiving. On October, 1, 1863, Future President James A. Garfield was appointed Major General in the Union Army. On November 2, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln was invited to speak at the inaugural dedication of the Gettysburg Cemetery…. Smith Park…. The Kizh-Gabrielino village of Sibangna was located in the vicinity of the San Gabriel

Mission and nearby Smith Park. Though the KizhGabrielinos were enlisted by the Spanish to work on the Mission as well as be indoctrinated into the Spanish culture, they still tried to maintain their own way of life. On the site of today’s Smith Park are replica village structures and a dry creek bed surrounded by boulders and species of trees and plants used for baskets, clothing, food and medicine. A large mural is also located onsite which depicts the village of Sibangna. The park is located on Broadway Avenue between Juniper Serra and San Marino Avenues in San Gabriel and is free to the public….

We honored an outstanding student from Dr. DougSears Learning Center. Accompanying Adrien was his teacher Mr. Reggie Rios. Adrian is 17 years old and in Mr. Jahan and Mr. Rios class. He has a brother and sister and enjoys working on art, playing football,
and going to the golf driving range. Adrian said, “The best things about The Learning Center are the great staff and students, it helps me achieve my goals, and school helps me grow as a young adult.” The best thing that ever happened was catching his first fish. If
he could change one thing it would be to pay attention to High School from his first day. Personal goals are to join the Navy, to have a 4.0 GPA throughout this year, and to start driving this month.

Get ready for the holidays and come join us for breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 7th at the Arcadia Community Center, 365 Campus Drive, Arcadia, CA 91007. Breakfast with Santa is $10 per person and includes breakfast, photos with Santa (one photo ticket per child only) and holiday entertainment. There will be two options for breakfast: 8:30-9:30am (#10276) or 10:30-11:30am (#10277). Registration is underway and space is limited. You can register by walk-in, mail-in or on-line, just go to the City’s website at www. ci.arcadia.ca.us under the Recreation and Community Services Department. The breakfast fills up quickly so get your registration requests in to assure your spot! For new registrants, please remember to include your proof of residency/ child’s birth with your forms and on-line submittals, if you have not already done so. This information is required and will delay the
process if not provided. For more information, please contact the Recreation Department at 626.574.5113. The Holiday Snow Festival is free to the public and will also take place at the Arcadia Community Center on the same day from 9am-2pm. This event will feature holiday entertainment, crafts, trolley train rides, dual sled runs and two snow play areas. Delicious food from the popular Grilled Cheese Truck will be available for purchase from 11:30am-1:30pm. Santa will only be present at the Breakfast with Santa Event. Free parking is available at the Centennial Way Entrance to Santa Anita Race Track. There will be shuttle service to transport participants to and from the Community Center from 8:00am-2:15pm. In the event of rain, the Snow Festival will be held Saturday, December 14th. For more information please call 626.574.5113!
20 Tons of Fun Temple City will once again feature Lights On Temple City on December 6. Thousands of lights will illuminate Santa’s path to Temple City Park. Several trucks of ice will be delivered to the park and then transformed into snow for young and old to enjoy playing in and sledding on. This fun filled event will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. with a grand parade led by the Pride of Temple City Marching Band at 7 p.m.. The parade is on Las Tunas between Cloverly and Kauffman with Santa making his grand entrance to light up the 100-foot redwood tree along with Mayor Cynthia Sternquist and Council Members. There will also be performances by the Temple City High School Brighter Side Singers. Featured children’s activities include snow play areas including sled runs, balloon art, food for purchase throughout the evening, and free take-home holiday crafts. Free photo opportunities will also be available with Saint Nick at the Santa House. No one produces family fun events like Temple City and the Parks & Recreation Dept. Temple City Tweets: • Temple City was recently designated as the 41st safest city in the United States. An organization that
tracks the safest cities in California (safewise.com) is on a mission to help create a safe environment for your family. They recently designated Temple City as the 5th safest city to live in California. Cities in order of safest were Saratoga, Rancho Santa Margarita, Los Altos, and Aliso Viejo. by Tracey Hause, Administrative Services Director indicating that Temple City had a 15.38% increase in the median sales price of residential units from 2012 to 2013. Temple City surpassed its residential median sales price at the height of the real estate market in 2007. There are only four other cities in Los Angeles County (out of 88 cities) that have also surpassed median sales: Arcadia, Bradbury, San Marino, and Santa Monica. The entire Los Angeles region still remains 25.8% below the height of the 2007 market. • On November 30 I will have reached an important milestone in my life’s journey. I married my sweetheart, Pat, in Pasadena 50 years ago. Life has been good with 2 wonderful daughters and sons-in-law and 5 of the best grandchildren. I am one lucky guy. God has blessed us so much. What I mean is, every show, special, TV movie, or this or that, always talks about some great Christmas miracle. But if every program, every year, shares a tale about a special Christmas miracle then I have to ask if it is really a miracle or...just every day common place? They bore me. If they aren’t some sort of Santa exists (along with the North Pole workshop, elves, the winter miser, the heat miser, and Rudolph) story, then it’s a story about two lost loves finding each other again at Christmas time after being separated for years. There’s never a mystery to the Christmas love story... they end up happily ever after (Unless it’s a Nicholas Sparks novel then one or both of the romantics will be dead at the end of 500 pages). The kids are always going to get the presents, Santa’s always going to make his deliveries, the house will get a Christmas tree, and Mom will always get her voice back in time to sing for the church on Christmas Eve. Then, of course, there is the going back in time story. The one where the guy or gal gets to go back and make things right...Now this one intrigues me. I mean, who wouldn’t want to go back and clean up a mess. I got to thinking... wouldn’t the Rosemead Panthers special teams unit like to go back to the fourth quarter of the CIF finals in 2008 and make the play on Paraclete’s Brandon Buteyn before he returned a punt 90-plus yards for a touchdown? Wouldn’t the 2007 New England Patriots defense like to have another shot in the fourth quarter against the New York Giants in the Super Bowl? Wouldn’t the Los Angeles Lakers like to have a do-over on ever acquiring a slug named Dwight Howard? Wouldn’t the Dodgers Matt Kemp like start the 2013 baseball season all over again? Arroyo Defeats Schurr, Advances to Semis by Tim Peterson Montebello
The Arroyo Knights are returning to the semifinals for the first time since 2004 after defeating the Schurr Spartans, 28-14, on Friday night at Ken Davis Field in the second round of CIF’s Mid-Valley Division playoffs. With the Knights leading 21-14 late in the fourth, they halted a potential game tying score by forcing a fumble. Then they closed the deal. Arroyo running back Randy Amezcua broke through the line and raced 74-yards for a touchdown with 1:09 to play. Amezcua, who finished with 153 yards on 19 carries, was only part of the story however. The Arroyo defense stood up time after time and forced Schurr into five turnovers, intercepting quarterback Sal Chavez three times and forcing a pair of fumbles. The Spartans two scores came the unconventional way. One came on a fake punt 61-yard run by Noah Quintero and the other was set up in the fourth quarter when Arroyo muffed a punt on its own 17 yard line. two fumble recoveries. Arroyo quarterback Nathan Coto completed 12 of 19 for 143 yards and two scores and also rushed for 46 yards on nine carries. Both touchdown passes went to Valdivia. The first for 23-yards, the second was an 8-yard strike that gave the Knights an early 13-0 lead. “Nobody would have wanted our players last
year or at the beginning of this year. Nobody would have wanted our quarterback. Nobody knew who he was. But we kept playing and just kept winning. I’m proud to be with a group that includes San Dimas, Paraclete and Monrovia. I’m happy that we are the one MVL team that is represented in the semis,” said Arroyo Coach Jim Singiser.

At the end of Arroyo's 2814 win over Schurr Friday night in the second round of the CIF Mid-Valley Division playoffs, all of the players gathered together, held up their helmets and in unison shouted “PAPA SINGISER!” All during the season that is becoming pretty special, the players have been doing this, dedicating each and every game to Head Coach Jim Singiser's father, who passed away last December. This isn't something that the coaching staff suggested, or the parents thought would be a good idea. This is something the players, on their own, decided to do. As a unit, the players realized how important Papa Singiser, who used to attend every game and most of the practices, was to the program. And as a team they vowed to dedicate the season to him. It's hard to argue that it hasn't played a role in the Knights' success. They have won 11 straight after an opening night loss to Los Altos and now find themselves in the semi finals for the first time since 2004. Sure it's a strong passing game, a solid running attack, and an opportunistic defense that has played a big part in a semi final run. But it's also becoming very evident that Papa Singiser is looking down, wearing an Arroyo hat, smiling and knowing that he too is a big part of the 2013 Arroyo Knights. “I've come to realize that this run we have been on since August is not missing him, it's because of him. He is guiding us and I know he is smiling,” said Jim Singiser. San Dimas, who will face Arroyo this Friday night at B.L. Bergstrom Stadium, has averaged over 45 points per game in their last eight games. During that span the Saints have beaten their opponents by an average of over 34 points per game. After starting the season 0-4 some were questioning if the Saints could even win the Valle Vista League. They not only won it, they destroyed it. San Dimas and Arroyo had two common opponents this year. Los Altos beat Arroyo 28-21 and also beat San Dimas 42-21. Arroyo beat Baldwin Park 56-53 while San Dimas beat the Braves 70-27. Jake Payton, who transferred from San Dimas to Bonita, rushed for 1291 yards and eight touchdowns while Joseph “The Count” Mayorga, who transferred from San Gabriel to San

With his 149 yard performance Friday night against Montebello, Monrovia's Kurt Scoby has now rushed for 2023 yards this year. It's even more incredible considering in a three game stretch in October Scoby had only 16 carries combined. Note to Montebello fans: Pete Gonzalez just led the Oilers to an Almont League title and into the second round of the playoffs where they lost to three time defending CIF Champion Monrovia. This is the guy your trying to run out of town? If this was college football he would be offered a four year contract worth millions of dollars. That's my principle. Scoby Spills Oilers by George Hernandez Montebello
The Monrovia Wildcats defeated the Montebello Oilers 41-6 on Friday night at Montebello High School to reach the Mid-Valley Division semifinals for the sixth consecutive year. The Wildcats Kurt Scoby found the end zone four times and rushed for 230 yards, to give him 2,026 yards on the season. The Oilers defense stopped Monrovia on its first drive, but a dropped punt return gave the ball right back to the Wildcats and Scoby took it to the house from 32-yards out on his first carry of the game.

Mid Valley Division’s second leading rusher Montebello’s Issac Medibles had 24-yards rushing for the Oilers before leaving the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury. Monrovia quarterback De-
shawn Potts went 8 of 12 for 83-yards, he had a 54-yard pass to Octavius Spencer who took it to paydirt. Potts also had 102-yards on the ground. Next week the Wildcats travel north to Paraclete.

The Nixon Presidential Center Annual Thanksgiving Library & Museum Luncheon Program by Jo Anne Disney Lake Arrowhead
The Nixon Presidential Library and Museum is located in Yorba Linda, California. Visitors to the library and museum will be pleasantly surprised by the many personal items of both the President and his wife, Pat. The tour begins in the auditorium, which displays “many vintage films, news footage and significant television speeches made by President Nixon.” Then, you can proceed to the permanent galleries, which “were inherited by the federal government in 2007 from the private foundation that used to control the Nixon Library.” These galleries display “images, video and artifacts related to President Nixon’s career, family life and service as president.” Among the exhibits that visitors have the opportunity to see are an exact replica of the Lincoln Sitting Room in the White House’s family quarters as it looked during the Nixon’s presidency; the 1967 limousine used by Nixon as well as Presidents Johnson and Ford; a replica of the East Room of the White House; items during the space exploration program and the moon landing; and an interactive forum with President Nixon, just to name a few. However, one of the highlights of a trip to the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum is a “chance to step aboard Marine One- the helicopter used by Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford.” The helicopter has been restored and is permanently displayed at the library. This is the same helicopter that carried President Nixon on August 9, 1974, the day that he resigned. The grounds house the birthplace of President Nixon, who was born on January 9, 1913. The original house was built by his father, Frank Nixon in 1912. Along with his mother
Hannah, they lived there until 1922. Records indicate that the property exchanged hands several times. However, “in 1959, the school board and the citizens of Yorba Linda designated the house as a historic site. Then in 1990, it became a part of the private Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace.” The house is open to visitors, but only with a supervised tour. Also on the grounds are beautiful rose gardens and a wonderful variety of outdoor plants and flowers. There is a special section that houses the gravesites of President Nixon and his beloved wife, Pat. The Nixon Presidential Library and Museum is located at 18001 Yorba Linda Boulevard. A Thanksgiving Luncheon took place on Monday, November 25th at the South El Monte Senior Center, located at 1556 Central Avenue. More than 275 seniors took part in the festivities. Half of the cost of the luncheon was sponsored by the county and the rest through the Senior Center Accounting Program. Before the lunch started George Muñoz welcome the seniors. The master of the ceremonies was Mayor Louie Aguiñaga and the invocation was done by Father Juan Francisco Gonzales. In addition, the pledge of
allegiance was led by Commissioner Rudy Lopez, who also opened the spotlight at the dance performance of “Baile Folklorico Alegria de Sur El Monte.” Thanks to Huntington Culinary for the food and (FBLA) Future Business Leaders of America that helped serve the food. Also, thanks to 3L Club for donating Apple Cider. As was expected, the South El Monte City Councilman, Joseph J. Gonzales said a few words along with Commissioners Vice Chairperson David Garcia, Commissioner Josie Blanco, and Commissioner Rudy Lopez.
The City Council helped with the raffle, a 50/50 as well as door prizes. Thank you to Super Bingo Club for donating the raffle tickets. The Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon closed with thanks to the South El Monte City Council, the rest of the Community Service Commissioners Yolanda Del Rio, Lauren Guevara, Leo Barrera, Leslie Cojulun and Luis Polino Jr. Everyone was wished a safe Holiday and were invited to attend the upcoming Christmas Luncheon on Monday, December 16, 2013.
