Rose Parade Salutes Parks, Bids Farewell to Parade Icons by Annick J. Downhower Pasadena
The 2016 Rose Parade invites viewers to “Find Your Adventure.” Tournament of Roses President Mike Matthiessen chose the theme as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken
Burns, named an honorary park ranger for his series “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” will be the parade’s Grand Marshal. For the 68th year in a row, Los Angeles TV station KTLA will broadcast the Rose Parade live. Popular

co-hosts Stephanie Edwards and Bob Eubanks will provide commentary. This telecast will be bittersweet for viewers because Edwards and Eubanks decided this will be their final New Year’s broadcast. Eubanks, known for hosting “The Newlywed Game” and producing the Beatles’ original Hollywood Bowl concerts, began providing parade coverage for KTLA in 1979. Edwards, the first female co-host of the ABC morning show that became “Good Morning America,” joined Eubanks on KTLA starting New Year’s Day 1982. The team is known for their cheerful banter, with Edwards specializing in pointing out beautiful float details while Eubanks highlights equestrian units. Fans are encouraged to email

Around Town by Mavis Hansen HAPPY NEW YEAR! FELIZ ANO NUEVO! BONNE ANNEE! HANOLI MAKAHIKI HOU! SCZCESLIWEGO NOWEGO ROKU! EIN GLUCKLICHES NEUES JAHR! ONNELLISTA UUTTA VUOTTA! All over the world, HAPPY NEW YEAR is said a different way, yet means the same for everyone. My wish for you is a Happy New Year full of good cheer, health and happiness with many blessings. Welcoming the New Year is one of the world’s oldest and most widely celebrated customs. In many places people stay up late to see the old year out and the New Year in. Almost everywhere in the world church bells ring, horns toot whistles blow and sirens shriek. London’s Trafalgar Square and New York City’s Times Square swarm with crowds of happy, noisy people. New Year’s Day is a time for entertaining, visiting and gift-giving. Because it marks the beginning of the year, New Year’s Day is thought of as a good time to make ‘New Year’s Resolutions,” the resolve to do better in the year just beginning than you did in the year just ended. The idea of a “clean start” for the New Year means exactly that in many places. In part of the Balkans, the people sprinkle themselves, their houses and their yards with freshly drawn well water. People in Morocco observe the same practice. The people in Madagascar and Burma pour water on their heads on New Year’s Day. Throughout the Orient, where the New Year is the most joyful and important festival of the year, the clean start applies to many things. All debts must be paid at the end of the old year. Houses are thoroughly cleaned. People dress in their newest and best clothes. In China the holiday may go on for many days. Much time is spent preparing special foods. Feasts, fireworks, visiting and the exchange of gifts are enjoyed. Children love this day, for this is when they receive red envelopes containing gifts of money from relatives and friends. The Japanese New Year is equally cheerful, where

homes are decorated with pine branches and bamboo, symbols of long life. In many European countries, Italy, Portugal and the Netherlands, among others, families start the New Year by first attending church services. Then they pay calls on friends and relatives. Italian boys and girls receive gifts of money on New Year’s Day. In parts of Italy, sprigs of mistletoe are hung over the doorways for luck. Beginning in Medieval times, the wassail bowl was an important part of the English Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. The bowl was filled with punch of spiced wine or ale. Wassail comes from the Angle-Saxon which means “be whole” or “be well”. Wassailing went on everywhere in England, in the royal palace, in monasteries and in private homes. It still continues today in the custom of friends wishing each other “good health” in the New Year over a glass of wine. People in the United States observe the holiday by going to church and giving and attending parties on New Year’s Eve. It is a time for hospitality and good cheer. Since television has come into all homes, many parties and get- togethers are held to watch the many footballs games played on this day. It is a wonderful day for families to be together. Christmas has passed and thoughts turn to what the future holds for us, our family, friends and the world we live in. Let us all count our blessings, remember to help those who need us and yes, maybe make some New Year resolutions? Happy New Year! See you soon, someplace AROUND TOWN.
Student's Corner New Year’s Resolutions With the New Year upon us, many have constructed their list of resolutions. A resolution is a decision to do or not to do something. Some examples include the decision to exercise everyday or to not eat as much junk food. Just as with everything else in our world, these resolutions come with criticism. One of the most common reactions I have experienced to yearly resolutions are people questioning why it is that we only challenge ourselves to improve once a year, rather than throughout the year. Why couldn’t we have limited our time on social media months ago? I agree that we shouldn’t wait till January 1st to better

does work out, and a person’s life is changed for the better. The success rate is not impacted by the time of year in which a person sets goals for themselves, and in every instance, the person has good intentions, which I find to be commendable. Acknowledging the fact there are areas in ones life that could be improved is already impressive and is the first step in making any change occur. Overall, I recommend that you take action on bettering yourself as soon as possible, but if ringing in the New Year is what makes you determined to do so, then by all means use it.
D.U.I. by Eugene R. Webb
Sadly, most all of us know someone who had a D.U.I.; I must admit it happened to me, a real lucky guy. For I was stopped four times, only arrested twice; Back in 1966 I felt those wonderful police were nice.

But today I wished I had been arrested the first time; Maybe I’d gotten sober sooner and saved my mind. Many of us do drive when we’ve had way too many; We don’t realize if caught, it’ll cost us plenty. I know any addiction is really very hard to break; But it’s something we all must do for our own sake. An alcoholic is the very last to know they are one; Also they know nothing about alcohol, just fun. Alcohol is the number one killer, with D.U.I. at the top; People start drinking, they don’t know when to stop. Once we start drinking we don’t know what we’ll do; The old devil takes over and makes a fool out of you. Our worst decisions are made when we are drinking; And alcoholic’s are known to have stinken thinken. When drinking & driving you never think about getting caught; And you really don’t give a damn if you do or not.

ourselves, especially if it is concerning our health, but also argue that if getting a new calendar is the motivation a person needs to get up a little earlier and take that morning jog, then why stop them? Some people might have incredible self-control, allowing them to take action whenever they please. Others, myself included, appreciate a reminder every now and then, which is something the start of a year could potentially provide. The other criticism I hear for yearly resolutions is that they are never fulfilled. I have witnessed, and experienced, many resolutions fail to get carried out. Nonetheless, there are also instances in which a goal for the year

There’s a lot of consequences that comes with a D.U.I.; An accident, killing a lot of people and you could die. However, when drinking we are not full of fear; It cost a lot of money and I lost my license for a year. I can tell you it’s a lot worse now than way back then; I hope you read this poem, and take heed my friend. ‘Time Jockey’
Mormon Connection by Joe Castillo
Mormon Battalion …. The foundations of the United States were built on basic freedoms and rights for man including the freedom of religion. In February 1846, the Mormons were driven out of their established homesteads in places such as Nauvoo, Illinois. After angry mobs attacked them, the Mormons escaped westward across the Mississippi River. Brigham Young, president of the Latter-Day Saints, sought government protection and sent his emissary Elder Jesse Little to Washington D.C. Little met with a number of government officials but War with Mexico had just been declared and more important issues were at stake. After Little’s persistent efforts, a meeting with President James Polk was arranged. Polk was involved in a war and the Mormon issue wasn’t a priority. But Polk needed men to support his military efforts and agreed to establish an Army unit to protect the Mormons from any further persecution. Polk created a battalion size unit of 500 enlisted men which would only include members of the Mormon faith. The unit became known as the Mormon Battalion and would be the only U.S. military unit established for religious purposes. The soldiers in the unit were inducted into the U.S. Army and were issued Army uniforms, however commanding officers were regular U.S. Army officers and were not selected from the volunteer Mormon enlistees. In July 1846, Brigadier General Stephen Kearney led the Mormon Battalion across the Midwest plains to San Diego. The unit performed their occupation duties while stationed in California but after their enlisted period ended, many in the group wanted to join Brigham Young and a growing number of Mormons in a new location, Salt Lake
City. The group made arrangements to travel north through California to reach their planned destination. Crossing the Sierra Nevada’s became their greatest challenge but the Mormons chose to follow a path first negotiated by John C. Fremont’s scout, Kit Carson. The path went northeast from Sacramento through Placerville and Coloma before entering the Lake Tahoe area and crossing through Nevada to Utah. The trail became known as the Emigrant Trail and the Mormons followed it to reach the safe haven of Salt Lake City. In September 1848, the first group of Mormons arrived in Utah, three months after their journey started. The Emigrant Trail would be used by hundreds of Mormons to escape persecution in other locations in the United States. While the Mormon Battalion was a unique religious based unit, it was also run by non-Mormon officers with one of them being General George Stoneman, who served as a quartermaster of the battalion. Stoneman was a roommate of Confederate icon Thomas ‘Stonewall’ Jackson, was a graduate of West Point and eventually rose to the rank of Brigadier General. In the Civil War, he commanded a crack Union Unit and after the war directed railroad surveying parties through the Sierra Nevada’s. He entered politics after leaving the military and was elected as the fifteenth Governor of California from 1883-1887. In his honor, a number of sites were named after him in Yosemite Valley including Stoneman Meadow, Stoneman Bridge and Stoneman House Hotel. Stoneman retired to live in the City of Alhambra, where Stoneman Avenue is named in his memory along with the other business named as part of his legacy…..

Year in Review: A great 2015 in San Gabriel by City of San Gabriel San Gabriel
Year in Review: A great 2015 in San Gabriel In 2015, the City of San Gabriel saw many great milestones and accomplishments. From new infrastructure to innovative ways to connect with residents and visitors, city staff members and the City Council have worked hard this year to
improve city services and better the community as a whole. Here are, in no particular order, ten highlights from San Gabriel in 2015. 1. A SMOOTHER RIDE: Residents and commuters have a smoother ride now on Las Tunas Drive after the city completed the Las Tunas Drive Pavement Re-

habilitation Project in 2015. The project was the largest paving project in the city in nearly a decade, and included upgrades like drought tolerant median landscaping and the city’s first bike lanes. In addition, the City Council approved a loan from the California Infrastructure Bank that will fund other much-needed infrastructure projects. Finally, though it is not a city project, San Gabriel residents also benefited from the completion of all four bridge crossings for the ACE San Gabriel Trench Project. 2. OZZIE GETS A MAKEOVER: This year the city, along with Friends of La Laguna, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the iconic La Laguna de San Gabriel playground at Vincent Lugo Park. As part of the celebration, the group also unveiled the newly restored Ozzie the Octopus structure. 3. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: In 2015, the San Gabriel Fire Department launched SG Alert, a new emergency notification system that will help the city get out essential and live saving information to residents by phone, email or text during a disaster. Police Department began a new effort this year to engage local residents, hosting the department’s first-ever Coffee with a Cop event on Dec. 10 at The Greenhaus Café. The event was a great opportunity for locals to talk to city police personnel in a casual, comfortable setting. 5. PARTIES IN THE MISSION DISTRICT: Community members had no shortage of entertainment this year with a host of fun, free, city-hosted events throughout 2015. The year kicked off with the city’s inaugural Lunar New Year Festival, and continued the momentum with other firsttime events like Surf’s Up and Dumpling & Beer Fest. All the events had a great turnout and gave residents a chance to connect with the city while enjoying some free family fun in the historic Mission District. 6. FEELING FANCY ON VALLEY BOULEVARD: The city saw the beginning of several new and exciting projects this year, including the groundbreaking for two new hotels on Valley Boulevard. The new Hyatt Place and Sheraton in the city will bring in income, visitors and economic development. Finally, the city actively participated in two ICSC shows promoting the community and encouraging new businesses to come to San Gabriel. 7. PLANNING TO PLAY: The Community Services Department completed its first Strategic Plan in 2015, marking an exciting beginning for new projects, programs and goals in the department in the coming years. View the plan online. 8. GRAB THE POPCORN: This year the Playhouse launched many new programs in an effort to become a more full service
entertainment destination. The theater now has a new box office, and hosts new and unique programs like Silent Sundays and Global Flavors. 9. GETTING SOCIAL: The City of San Gabriel was busy in 2015 when it came to social media. This year the city launched a new Instagram and YouTube account, as well as a Weibo account to engage with Chinese speaking residents. These new accounts have already gained significant following and helped the city connect with the community on many different levels. 10. PERKS IN THE PARK: The Finance Department announced in 2015 the launch of the new public WiFi network, SG Connect, offering free wireless Internet connection to the public at all city parks and facilities. In doing so, the city was the first in the area of its size to offer such a service to residents and visitors.

Johnson Leads Monrovia Past Glendora by Corey Kwok Monrovia
It’s so odd. I can get absolutely furious as a St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams fan. I tell myself I’m going to stop taking it all so seriously and then they go and pull off a win like they did in Seattle last Sunday. The emotions of sports fans are so fragile. We like to think we are tough, strong, loyal, and ever faithful. Truth is we are as fragile as the dreamer that walks into an American Idol audition. ***USC will play Wisconsin on Wednesday, December 30, in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego. If it sounds familiar it should. USC played in the Holiday Bowl last year and defeated Nebraska. The year before that the Trojans were in the Las Vegas Bowl, the year before that the Sun Bowl, and three years before that, in 2009, they played in the Emerald Bowl. When you think of USC of football you’re supposed to think of Rose Bowl’s and national championships, but the Trojans have not played in a Rose Bowl game since the conclusion of the 2008 season. Mark Sanchez was the quarterback and Pete Carroll was still the head coach. USC finished 12-1 that year and completed its seventh straight ten-plus win season. Since then they’ve not only failed to play in the Rose Bowl, but they’ve only won ten games twice in seven seasons. Excellent if it’s UCLA, but at USC, that sort of success puts you through six head coaching changes. Do you think people working in the athletic department feel a little bit of pressure? Do you think with millions of dollars at stake the pressure to get the athletes to perform at a high level is extremely intense? Last question: Is there any part of you that doesn’t believe a division-one athlete is, in reality, a professional athlete? They might attend class (well, maybe Kentucky basketball players don’t) but school is the side job. ***On second thought, maybe the NFL MVP for 2015 is really the Arizona Cardinals’ Carson Palmer. *** “Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man.”—Benjamin Franklin *** After starting the season 1-5, the Kansas City Chiefs have won nine games in a row and have made the NFL playoffs. *** Former Duarte football standout Mike Harris (UCLA) is in his fourth NFL season and has started 15 games at tackle for the Minnesota Vikings this season. Harris spent his first two seasons with the San Diego Chargers after going undrafted in the 2012 draft. The Peterson Principle By Tim Peterson
Rants and raves for this holiday season. I got out to see some high school basketball this past week. And you thought football officials were bad? Note to CIF basketball referees: If you hear somebody berate you and use profanity but don’t know where it’s coming from don’t immediately hit the team with a technical that is in the vicinity. This is exactly what happened at the Temple CityNorco game Tuesday night. With less than a minute left in the game and the score tied, a Norco player drove the lane and was fouled. The call could have gone either way, but the official blew the whistle. Temple City Head Coach Eric Chin got up to complain as boos erupted from the crowd. Chin stated his case and it began to quiet down. As the official began to walk away a fan sitting directly behind the Temple City bench yelled that the call was “brutal” and emphasized his point with a well placed F-bomb. The referee turned and pointed towards the TC bench and said emphatically “Technical on the bench!” Chin and assistant Rich Hollinger now were back on the court arguing that the outburst didn’t come from the bench. Despite their protests, the official insisted that it was a bench technical. Chin, in his frustration, got hit with another technical and when Hollinger didn’t immediately leave the floor he got hit with a third. Both free throws for the original foul were good and with the three technical fouls resulting in six more Norco ran off eight straight points from the charity stripe. Yeah, it was charity all right. A 62-62 game was now 70-62 Norco with 32 seconds left. Merry Christmas Norco! Here’s an early gift. The Rams had erased a 14 point deficit in the fourth quarter but that all disappeared on one play. It appeared the official knew he botched it when he hightailed it out of the gym as soon as the clock hit zeroes. What if it was a Norco fan sitting behind the TC bench to sabotage the Rams? That could be a strategy for all teams going forward. Have one of your own people sit behind the opposing team’s bench and sound off on questionable calls. Bingo...instant points. **Why is every hiring of a football coach met with such negative feedback? What could possibly be negative about Margarito Beltran going to Bell Gardens? I say great hire BG! Let’s just congratulate the Lancers

Note on Sue and Apaches teammate Sahana Saikuman, averaging 10.7, is that they are both freshmen. Sue is a guard and Saikuman plays forward. On the boys side, the top five scorers are: El Monte’s Edward Dominguez is averaging 22.0 points per-game. Arroyo’s Justin Alfonso follows averaging 19.8, Temple City’s Rich Hollinger averaging 19.2, Bassett’s Ruben Bermudez comes in at 17.2 and team-mate Salvador Santos

Sierra Vista Soccer Keeps Rolling
Double Take
The Lady Dons picked up four more wins before Christmas against Whittier, Pomona Catholic, San Gabriel Mission, and Colton. Steve Jimenez’s team is now 11-0-1 on the season. We mentioned last week that Sierra Vista has been good for a long time and we expect them to be very good going forward. Through 12 games this season the Lady Dons have scored a total of 41 goals. Nearly half of that total has been accounted for by freshmen Diana Garcia
The El Monte Lady Lions basketball team is off to decent start with a 5-5 record. But Cristine Butler’s team looks a lot like Kendra Navarro’s volleyball. The El Monte story is not unique but a great indication that, like the boys, girls are multiple sport athletes these days facing the same pros and cons of a very busy, very active prep career. The El Monte basketball team features 11 players on its official roster. The volleyball team officially carried 12 on its roster. No less than six girls have played on both teams. They include Carla Sanchez, Kate Acosta, Jackie Lam, Camille Nievez, Giselle Alarcon, and Emmy Pham. In the case of Sanchez (#1) and Acosta (#2), they are wearing the same jersey numbers they wore in both sports.

In terms of the area, Temple City is a force. We’re not talking state finals or even divisional semifinals, but Eric Chin’s Rams are an opponent’s nightmare. The Bosco Tech keeps chugging along and before the season is over La Salle should make a statement. Until something better comes along, the Mission Valley League looks like it will belong to Gabrielino.
No new teams in the Top Ten this week, but there was a shake-up at the top. South El Monte, playing excellent ball, has unseated, at least for now, the Duarte Lady Falcons. Expect these two teams to flip several times during the course of the season. South El Monte begins Mission Valley League play on January 8. Duarte starts on January 13. The Lady Falcons were undefeated on Montview League play last season and they have not lost a league game since January 29, 2014.

The float will include four waterfalls and a zip line plus a sculptured flock of macaws. The parrots are a nod to Rodriguez’s pet blue hyacinth macaw, Sebastian. Born in Los Angeles, Rodriguez created his first float concept as a high school junior, winning a contest sponsored by the city of Whittier. That led to a college degree in design and a career with Fiesta

Dole and Rodriguez were a perfect match because the designer enjoyed presenting visions of the countries where the company sources its sustainable, non-GMO fruits and vegetables. This year’s parade will include local, self-built float entries from Downey, La Canada-Flintridge, Sierra Madre, and South Pasadena, along with the annual crowd favorite from Cal Poly Pomona/ San Luis Obispo. Hoverboards by Glen Maldonado National
Hoverboards are not what they sound like and they don’t hover like in the movie “Back to the Future.” What they do is move you around on 2 wheels like a Segway, but without a handle bar. They are this year’s biggest Christmas gift to kids, and because so many brands have started making them, there are big price ranges. The big problem is knock offs. Many Hoverboards are made cheaply and with
bad parts to sell for less money. Those boards are dangerous and can explode. There many reports of Hoverboards catching on fire, you need to be careful and make sure you buy your Hoverboard from a reputable dealer like Best Buy and make sure to ask about warranties. A less expensive device usually won’t have one but a well-known brand will. The average cost of a Hoverboard is $500, but
Walmart sells one at $430. The Skagway is considered the best Hoverboard and has a battery life of about 2 hours and can ride for up to 10 miles. Make sure to check your city’s policy on Hoverboards. New York and other cities have banned them from sidewalks. Hoverboards are the new fad but I don’t see myself buying one anytime soon.

Robin Zander Surprise Appearance at Lucky Strike
by Sal Gomez Hollywood
The Ultimate Jam Night at Lucky Strike Live located inside the grand Hollywood and Highland entertainment complex on Hollywood Boulevard played a small part in rock music history recently. It came as a complete surprise to everyone in attendance as well as the management of the venue. The now legendary rock band Cheap Trick has
performed a sold out concert in the City of Riverside earlier in the evening and at the conclusion of the show, the bands drummer Daxx Nielsen thought it would be fun to drive up to Hollywood and JAM with other musicians at Lucky Strike. He invited the bands lead singer Robin Zander to accompany him and to his surprise he accepted.
Joy
Upon their arrival and while mingling with the other artists backstage a call came in to Robin Zander’s personal cell phone from his manager to relay great news. Cheap Trick had just been announced as one of 2016’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees. A long overdue honor for one of the hardest working bands in music. How good was this news you may ask? Robin and Daxx agreed to perform not just one but two classic Cheap Trick songs, “Dream Police” and “Surrender,” backed by the fabulous house band with an introduction by former MTV host, Riki Rachtman. A fantastic treat for everyone in attendance and a stellar moment for Lucky Strike Live’s Ultimate Jam Night on what was their end of the year event; Robin Zander performing immediately after hearing his band

A story of a family across four generations that is centered on the woman who finds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Facing betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, Joy becomes a true boss of family and enterprise
in a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces. Joy is played by Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games) a
divorced mother with 2 kids and a mother who doesn’t leave her room. Joy is fed up with how her life is going and decides to try and make something of herself by inventing the “Miracle Mop.” David O. Russell wrote and directed the film. He is known for writing and directing “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle.” Russell likes to use the same actors in his films, but changes their screen time. In the movie “Joy,” Russell fails to deliver the story of the business lady Joy, and really rushes the film. It’s not Russell’s best work, but we did get a great performance form Jennifer Lawrence. She did a great job acting and has been nominated for a Golden Globe. “Joy” really gives a new point of view and shows how women struggle in life. Even though “Joy” is a biopic, it really doesn’t show you much about her. Russell was on a roll and has maybe hit a wall in writing. Joy has a life that is very interesting but the film fails to give us her other great inventions. Casting was over used by David Russell. I would like to see him cast some new faces in his films. “Joy” has a strong female character with a strong performance from Jennifer Lawrence making the movie worth a watch. Grade B- Rated PG-13
