Two Brothers, One Love for the Game by Brenda Shepard Monrovia
Joshua and Jack are brothers. Both love baseball, but one has a rare genetic disorder called Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS), which could keep him from playing. Thanks to the Santa Anita Little League Challenger Division, now they both can. “Joshua will be getting a chance to play baseball, just like his big brother,” said John and Jessica Kitterman,

parents to Joshua & Jack. “We certainly give credit to the Santa Anita Little League for their desire to serve their community in this way.” According to the Santa Anita Little League, “The Challenger Division offers boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 5 to 18 (or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school), the opportunity to participate in an organized game of baseball. The most fundamental goal of the Challenger Division is to give everyone a chance to play. Another goal will be to provide a “buddy” for every Challenger player.” “The hope is that this will help players without disabilities understand how vital it is for children, like Joshua, to have the opportunity to play and experience the game just like everyone else,” said Jessica. “It will be a great way to raise awareness regarding CdLS
along with other disabilities to the community.” The league opener was held on Saturday, February 22nd and was met with great appreciation. For more information, or to donate to the league, please contact Mike Lang, President, through the SALL website: www.santaanitall. com. For more information about the CdLS Foundation or to make a donation, call the CdLS Foundation at 800-753-2357 or visit www. cdlsusa.org. About CdLS: Cornelia de Lange Syndrome occurs in about 1 in 10,000 births. An estimated 20,000 people in the U.S. have CdLS but remain undiagnosed and/ or without support services. Individuals with CdLS range from mildly to severely affected, though most have similar physical characteristics including small size, hands and feet; thin eyebrows that meet in the middle; long eyelashes; an
upturned nose; and thin, downturned lips. Some individuals have limb differences, including missing fingers or arms. Common medi-
cal problems include GERD, bowel obstruction, hearing loss, and congenital heart defects. Early diagnosis and intervention are essential to
ensure proper management of related medical issues. About the Foundation: Founded in 1981, the Cornelia de Lange Syndrome Foundation is a national family support organization that exists to ensure early and accurate diagnosis of CdLS, promote research into the causes and manifestations of the syndrome, and help people with a diagnosis of CdLS and their families make informed decisions throughout their lifetime.

The City of Sierra Madre will hold their Annual Wistaria Festival on Sunday, March 16 and extends an invitation to visit the World Famous Wistaria Vine. The Wistaria Vine was named in 1818 for Caspar Wistar in honor of his contributions to science. Sierra Madre’s vine was planted by William and Alice Brugman who purchased it, in 1894, from the old Wilson Nursery in Monrovia. The vine is of the Chinese Lavender variety and a member of the pea family. The seeds are believed to have been brought to Europe by Marco Polo in the 13th century as prized treasures from the Orient. In 1918, 12,000 people attended the first public Wistaria Festival. The Vine has been named by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest blossoming plant in the world! It has also been named one of the seven horticultural wonders of the world. This one day event is from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. There is no charge to see the vine, and a shuttle is available for a fee to take you to the vine site. Vendors, Food and lots of fun. Though the BBC TV series “Doctor Who” is known for its silly antics and satirical story plots, there will always be a special episode or episodes that are held close to the heart by all Whovians alike. Personally, I fell in love with “Vincent and the Doctor” (Series 5, Episode 10). In this episode, the two-hearted alien (Matt Smith) goes back in time with Scottish companion Amelia Pond (Karen Gillan) to meet Post-Impressionist artist, Vincent Van Gogh (Tony Curran). Vincent, known to have painted The Starry Night, Sunflowers, Irises, and many others, also committed suicide at thirtyseven and may have suffered many physical and mental instabilities. However, his postimpressionist work continues
to grow famous and can be eryone dismissed them (fact: found in the Musée d’Orsay he only sold one painting in Paris, France. The Doctor his entire career). El Monte City Council Makes Supporting Business Community a Priority by Chelsea Dickerson El Monte
The El Monte City Council recognizes that more must be done to attract and retain quality retail shops, restaurants and services. Building a business-friendly environment begins with the local government, and City officials have made this a top priority in the coming year. Recognizing that quality businesses are crucial to the health and prosperity of a community, the City has rolled out a new initiative called the Business Advisory Council (BAC) to support efforts to strengthen the local business community. “We need to develop
closer partnerships with our local entrepreneurs to make El Monte a vibrant destination for the private sector to create and grow a thriving business,” said Mayor Pro Tem Bart Patel, who serves as Chair of the Business Advisory Council. The BAC will be comprised of local business owners, residents, City officials, real estate experts, prospective/ potential business owners, the El Monte/ South El Monte Chamber of Commerce and others committed to helping transform El Monte into a flourishing economic center. “We think it
is crucial for business leaders to be at the table when we are making policy decisions that impact their industry,” said Councilwoman Norma Macias, Vice-Chair of the BAC. “The BAC will serve as that forum so we can hear from these important stakeholders.” The Council recently kicked off the BAC with a luncheon where business members could meet City executives, tour City Hall and provide feedback on what improvements can be made within the City to help facilitate business development. The input received from the business owners who attended will be considered in improving city processes in the future. If you are interested in learning more about the BAC, please contact Sheila Crippen at scrippen@elmonteca.gov.

Entertainment corner Movie Review: 300 Rise of An Empire 300: Rise of An Empire is the second installment of what I believe to be a trilogy, but will get more into that later. Rise of An Empire takes you back to the world of 300 in three different times. Before the events of 300 during the events of 300 and after the events of 300. We see some familiar faces and you even see King Leonidas played by Gerard Butler return. Rise of An Empire was not directed by Zack Synder who directed 300, but he was the producer and writer. Noam Murro directed Rise of An Empire; his previous experience is only one film, a comedy romance called Smart People. With an inexperienced director and a story so confusing there was much I did not enjoy. I did however enjoy the visual effects and acting. Sullivan Stapleton and Eva Green (Casino Royale, Dark Shadows) performances made this film bearable and left me wanting more. With a story so slow at first then rushed at the end I felt that the characters had not
developed enough. I saw this film in 3D and I enjoyed it. There were many things thrown at you and many actions scenes. What made 300 so popular was its visual slow mo effects. Rise of An Empire took that and went a little overboard with it. With so many bad things to say of this film, audiences still went out and saw it. 300: Rise of An Empire made 45 million dollars. Compare its opening to the original, Rise falls short of 300’s 70 million dollars. There is no doubt in my mind that 300 was better, no sequel has outperformed its original, except for of course, The Godfather Part 2 and The Dark Knight. My last words for you are, if you haven’t seen 300: Rise of An Empire yet, then you mostly like will not. It’s the latest Hollywood sequel money maker movie that will probably underperform and maybe halt the production of the final part of the

Did the powers that be at Monrovia do a good job of keeping that one under wraps or what? Trying to find out who the coaching candidates were was like trying to break the code to national security. I didn’t know if they were hiring a head football coach or selecting the next Defense Secretary for the United States. I heard a lot of names being floated along the way but none of them was Chris Stevens. I heard Wardell Crutchfield, Craig Shuster, Jim Singiser, Donald Davis, Dale Bunn and Jude Oliva. Heck I even heard former HC Steve Garrison’s name thrown around. Stevens was under the radar. I heard whispers a few minutes before the announcement but until that nada. But credit to AD Randy Bell and Monrovia. They kept the information in house, ignored all of the outside noise, did their due diligence to get their man. Only time will tell if Stevens is the right man but if you take a look at his resume at Ontario Christian it looks like a great hire. The feeling here is that if he could have that much success at Ontario Christian how much better will he be with all that talent in M-Town?

After serving as the OC HC from 2005 through 2008, Stevens stepped away from coaching with the birth of triplets. He returned in 2012 and helped advanced the Knights to the CIF East Valley D-12 Finals against Rim of The World. In his combined tenure, Ontario Christian has gone 52-22 with two CIF finals appearances, and six playoff births. His hiring ends a process that began for Monrovia on January 7th, when Ryan Maddox stepped down after six successful seasons.

The Peterson Principle By Tim Peterson
Daniel Al-gattas knows the SGV area. He played quarterback for the Walnut team that advanced to the CIF Finals in 2002 and coached at Mt. SAC for several years. He’s seen a lot of these kids come through and he’s seen them play. He knows exactly what type of kids he’s working with. He should be a good fit at Baldwin Park. Ran into former Rowland HC Craig Snyder last week. He’s still hard at work coaching at Rowland. In fact when I saw him he was still scouring over his notes and encouraging his troops. He’s the head coach for the girls softball team and was at Duarte High this week for the Duarte Tournament. Congratulations to Marshall players Christian Clark and Charlie Henderson for being selected by the National Football Foundation at this year’s Scholarship Banquet. The awards dinner is March 25 at Brookside Country Club. We will be mentioning several other area players over the next couple of weeks that will be recognized as well. I’m one of the lucky ones. I have Time Warner and therefore I get to watch the Dodgers. I think I could live without the Lakers especially with the train wreck that they have become, but I’m
not sure I can say that about the Dodgers. A summer without watching the Dodgers and hearing Vin Scully seems like a bad dream. And what’s worse is that it’s out of your control. If you’re not a Time Warner subscriber you can’t watch the Dodgers. It’s a simple as that. It finally got settled with the Laker channel and I’m sure an agreement with the Dodgers is imminent. It’s a game of chicken and somebody will eventually blink. If not Scully’s proclamation that “It’s time for Dodger baseball!” will seem hollow. Play Ball! That’s my principle. Al-gattas New Baldwin Park HC by Tim Peterson Baldwin Park
Daniel Al-gattas was named the new head football coach at Baldwin Park Wednesday, former head coach James Heggins confirmed. Al-gattas takes over for Chris Williams who stepped down after the 2013 season. Al-gattas played his high school ball at Walnut and was the quarterback for the 2002 team that appeared in the CIF Finals. Al-gattas was most recently the quarterback coach at Mt. San Antonio College and was the offensive coordinator at Baldwin Park in 2009. He attended Colorado State before transferring to Mt. SAC. After finishing at Mt. SAC he transferred to UCLA. Al-gattas graduated from

good coach,” Heggins said. The Braves went 7-4 overall last year and lost in the first round of the Mid-Valley Division playoffs to Arroyo 56-53.

Junior Morgan and Hayden Lescault combined for 45 points to lead Point Loma to an 86-70 win over Azusa Pacific Tuesday night in the season finale for both teams. The Cougars shot only 31 percent in the first half while Point Loma lit it up at a 50 percent clip and faster than you could say Phineas Bresee, the Nazarenes jumped out to a 37-24 halftime advantage. APU got as close as five in the second half but the Sea Lions again gained control late in the game and cruised to the victory. The Sea Lions were 9 for 21 from three point land overall while APU was 5 for 23. Troy Leaf, the Cougars’ leading scorer, finished with 15 points but was 1 for 6 from beyond the arc and 5 for 15 overall. Robert Sandoval led Azusa Pacific with 17 points and Jared Zoller tossed in 13. Sharif Watson scored 10. APU finished the season 17-10 overall and 13-8 in conference. Point Loma went 17-11 and 11-10. There were 1139 fans in attendance at the Felix Events Center.

that vision a reality. It is a prime example of how we return our federal tax dollars to our community for local projects that generate jobs and economic growth,” said Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus and representative for Downtown Los Angeles. The Regional Connector Project, expected to be completed in 2020, will attract nearly 17,000 new daily riders and provide access to more than 88,000 passengers saving commuters up to 20 minutes off their daily commutes. It will provide a one-set, one fare ride for commuters from Azusa to Long Beach and from East Los Angeles to Santa Monica without the need to transfer between rail lines for major east/west and north/south trips. “When the 1.9-mile Regional Connector is completed, transit riders from my district in East Los Angeles will be able to travel to the west side without transferring from one line to another. This will save time, improve cross county connections and make transit a more attractive and seamless transportation option for Angelenos,” said Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-40) “However, even before the line opens, my constituents and our communities will also benefit from the signing of this agreement because it will provide critically-needed, good paying jobs during construction and then during operations. While our nation continues its economic recovery, these jobs will employ our residents, beat back unacceptably high unemployment rates, and produce a quality “Made in America” transportation system. Jobs today and transit tomorrow. That’s a great combination! I hope that more Angelenos will get out of their cars and try a more stress-free ride to their destination on our ever growing rail system.” The new Metro Rail extension will offer an alternative transportation option to congested roadways, provide significant environmental benefits and spur economic development throughout the County. Through improved connectivity, riders will be better able to use the entire Metro Rail system, municipal bus lines and other regional transportation services. “The Regional Connector has been a long time coming so I’m very pleased that Metro secured the federal funding necessary to make it materialize,” said Supervisor Gloria Molina. “Once completed, Gold Line riders will be able to travel from Azusa to Long Beach and from East Los Angeles to Santa

end of the climax, the Doctor takes Vincent to the future to the Musée. Bill Nighy acts as the museum curator, Dr. Black, who praises Vincent for his impacting and outstanding work with color, lighting, structure, and form. An eavesdropping Vincent begins to cry, and realizes the worth and value of his art and himself. It is a touching storyline that relays the message that, though we can think as lowly as we want about ourselves, we will always be loved. Someone will always be there to praise us, and love us, and remind us that we are loveable- and that we are with value. Though the time-traveling pair is unable to stop Vincent from committing suicide, the Doctor does say, remarkably, a line that reminds you that life isn’t perfect. The Eleventh Doctor tells Amelia, “The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice-versa, the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things and make them unimportant.”

the Duarte Tournament. I think I could live without the Lakers especially with the train wreck that they have become, but I’m not sure I can say that about the Dodgers. Play Ball!
