Students in the Mountain View School District’s Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) program have enhanced their scientific, artistic and technological skills over the past month as they’ve taken part in the District’s Spring GATE Institute. Over the course of four Saturdays, 80 students participated in 3-hour classes provided by experts in their field and instructors from the Youth Science Center (YSC). Happy to spend part of their Saturdays engaged in scientific study, artistic expression and technology, the students didn’t mind the additional time in school. Experimentation and artistic creations were abundant as students took part their classes. Dr. Richard Shope, a professor at U.C. Irvine and research consultant for JPL led students in an Astrobiology Exhibition, where they participated in hands-on expeditions promoting team work as well as learning to use remote sensing data and science instruments to explore Earth processes. Web designer, Anthony Tanaka taught students the
key components of designing their own web page and Paul Burns, a Youth Science Center instructor provided Blending Art and Science where 3rd-5th grade students mixed the sciences of matter, motion, energy, and more with the artistic styles of artists, creating wonderful pieces such as a 3-D family tree of pets, and skeletal system of a bird. Local renowned artist, Dolores Haro led a class in Art designed to develop and broaden the students’ critical and creative thinking skills. Students enjoyed using their imagination to create watercolor pieces and acrylic canvas paintings. Using the scientific inquiry model, students experimented with corn starch and water to learn about polymers. Christian, a sixth grader from Madrid Middle School was surprised to see that when he slapped his hand in the mixture, the liquid did not splash. “That’s cool!” he exclaimed. “When we softly touch it it feels very wet and drips down our hands, but when we slap and splash the mixture fast it doesn’t move.
courtesy photo That’s because the polymers stay together.” A group of students had fun concocting the best solu-
tion to create gas that would make a small container pop and explode. Working Gate continued on page 15

Around Town by Mavis Hansen With wonderful memories of the beautiful church services for Easter and the Easter bunny, what a marvelous treat for anyone, from the youngest to the oldest! Now on to the special days in the month of May. Starting on Thursday, May 1st we celebrate the National Day of Prayer and a day to count our blessings. May 5, known as “Cinco de Mayo” commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (18611867). In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. El Monte’s Family Adventure Shuttle will travel to Olvera Street in Downtown Los Angeles for a special Cinco de Mayo Festival on Saturday, May 3rd departing from the Trolley Station at 10:00 a.m. and returning from Olvera Street at 4:00 p.m., for an estimated 30 minute ride. The price for the round trip shuttle is $6.00. El Monte’s Family Adventure Shuttle provides families the opportunity to share a fun trip together and a special trip is planned each month. For further information on future family adventures, phone the El Monte Trolley Station at 626-580-2242. El Monte Friend O’Garden Club will meet on Friday, May 2nd at the home of member Sandy Fout. A catered lunch will be enjoyed by the members. The meeting will begin at 11:30 am. A nominating committee was selected at the last meeting and will report on the slate of officers for the coming club year. The trip planned for this date was cancelled and the program has not yet been confirmed. Student Corner The Buzz A fun-filled Sunday picnic can sound like a horror maze on Halloween because of the screaming and ridiculous flailing of the arms. What is the cause of this reaction on outdoor get-togethers? Bees. These little critters are known for their buzzing, honey, and merciless stings. However, did you know that bees are fundamental to our lives, providing nearly everything we consume and enjoy? Besides the syrupy sugar we know as honey, bees are the primary reasons pollen moves from one flower to another, procreating fruits, vegetables, and clothing. Bees are necessary in our lives; however, their
Ashley Lanuza, contributing student writer from San Gabriel Mission High School.
homes, and their numbers, are decimating. Researchers, according to news.msn.com, call this phenomena “colony collapse disorder.” The cause may have stemmed from insecticides and fungicides found both in the pollen bees mainly interact with and surrounding aerosol chemicals. Such causes have killed almost ten million beehives, threatening our natural floral beauties and food consumption. How can we do our part to prevent this phenomenon? Well first of all, don’t go around killing all the bees that land on your glass of sweet tea this summer! Second, www.pbs.org advis-
es to make your home into a bee-friendly area by planting an abundance of flowers and plants or become a beekeeper yourself! For the latter, be sure to contact a local bee association to maintain and keep healthy bees. Finally, go to politics! Though life isn’t like the 2007 film Bee Movie, where you can bring your case to court, you can still write to senators and representatives to support funding for honeybee research. I know it might be easier to just swat the buzzes away, but we need these black-and-yellow creatures. Bees ultimately define the beauty of nature, consumption, health, and life. metro.net/srtp2014

Campaign Kick Off
April 30, 2014
Pasadena City College Astronomy Club Visited El Monte Troop 551 by Mark Peters EL Monte

This April, I was proud to officially kick-off my campaign for Los Angeles County supervisor before a crowd of over 400 hundred supporters at my campaign headquarters in El Monte after a year of engaging local community advocates and leaders. It was an outdoor event with live music, a wide representation of community and civic leaders, and, most important of all, plenty of good energy. I was moved by the joy, affection, and commitment to a better tomorrow by everyone who was in attendance. As a former trustee for the Rio Hondo Community College Board, coupled with my legislative record in Sacramento and Washington D.C., I am honored to have represented the San Gabriel Valley and Los Angeles County for over twenty-five years. It is this experience that helped me garner the support of Congresswomen Judy Chu and Lucille Roybal-Allard, California State Senators Ed Hernandez and Norma Torres, co-founder of the United Farm Workers Do-
lores Huerta, L.A. County Firefighters Association, the Sierra Club, and the National Organization for Women California, among others. Now, nearly three weeks after my kick-off, I am running a grassroots, “handson” campaign. I am going door-to-door, calling voters, attending community events, and reaching out to the many constituents in District 1 to ensure that I directly hear people’s concerns and share my priorities. I am most concerned about: job training, economic development, education, securing our communities, and implementing a culture of accountability and transparency at the county level. I will also work tirelessly to strengthen our health and safety net. I am committed to reforming the county’s child welfare system to ensure that our most vulnerable children are safe; improving, overall, public transportation, and increasing affordable housing in the county. Vote by Mail will begin within nine days, please be sure to vote.
El Monte Troop 551 has had a remarkable treat over the past few weeks. Mr. Jay Gordon, avid astronomer and Pasadena City College Astronomy Club became the windows to the galaxies for our Troop. Mr. Gordon presented his two telescopes that he uses for astro-photography and gave a captivating lecture on the inner workings of his telescopes with a presentation of the photos that he has taken. Mr. Gordon set up his telescopes for the Cub Scouts to view far off objects. Even though the sun was still out the Cubs were able to see the power of the telescopes on distant signs. The following week after the Pasadena City College Astronomy Club came to complete the astronomy lessons and thus completing the Cub Scouts earning their Astronomy Belt Loops. Abbygail, Conner, Melissa and Gilberto members of the PCC Astronomy club gave the cubs an in-depth presentation of our solar system,
our universe and just how small we really are, the stars, constellations and the phases of the moon. The Cubs played a game using Oreo’s the depict the 8 phases of the moon and whomever finished first won a pair of TMT Sun Glasses from the Thirty Meter Telescope being built in Mauna Kea. The Cubs had to eat the inside of the Oreo to the shape of the moon. Our winners were Diego, Julio and Roman, great job guys! The club also did a floor design using the Cubs and ropes to show how light moved through a

refracting telescope. As the night progressed the Cubs were able to view through the telescopes to see the star Sirius and Jupiter and its moons. Many of our Cubs have never looked through a telescope or knew what Astronomy was about, but after the two meetings and many thanks to Mr. Gordon and the PCC Astronomy Club you have given the Cubs from El Monte Troop 551 a life experience that they will not soon forget. Thank you for all you have done for the kids

I have a wonderful family that means the world to me; Therefore, I am as grateful as I can possibly be. I love human beings for each one is like no other; I like sharing and learning things from one another.
I have learned to love all kinds of cats and dogs; Horses, goats, rabbits, turtles, pigs and even hogs. Animals are really smart and often can be trained; They have feelings, and will answer if called by name. There are wonderful animals that work on the farm; Treasured cows and others should never be harmed. I had a steer, 1 goat and sheep, we had 23 all named;
Sheep were lambs raised on a bottle, none the same. I truthfully am happy to be well and still alive; I know I'm over the hill at the old age of eighty-five; I really enjoy writing poetry for the Mid Valley News; Inspired by you folks, I'll try not to sing the blues. People have told me my poems make them laugh or cry;
I feel so lucky to express my thoughts or at least try. My professor told me, "a published poet I would be"; Here I am writing for all of you great people to see.

‘Time Jockey ’ Historical Route by Joe Castillo
From Pasadena Westward …. You don’t have to go too far to see history all around you. Taking the 210 Freeway west until it turns into the 134 Freeway, you will see where history as it was back in the day. The 134 Freeway is known as the Ventura Freeway as it takes you to the City of Ventura and beyond. The city was named after the Mission San Buenaventura, which was founded in 1782 and established one of the stepping-stones along the El Camino Real. The freeway also became immortalized in the 1972 hit song ‘Ventura Highway’ by America. Leaving Pasadena, the freeway crosses the Arroyo Seco, which means ‘dry gulch’ which was named by the Spanish. The Kizh-Gabrielenos lived in the arroyo during the Spanish era using its supply of water, game and oak bearing acorns. The landscape within the arroyo is pretty much as it was when the Spanish were here. The freeway passes by the Eagle Rock, once known as ‘La Piedra Gorda’ or the Fat Rock. This was a ceremonial location for the GabrielenoKizh Tribe, and even today holds a special meaning in its present location. The freeway crosses Figueroa Street. The street is one of the longest in the Los Angeles area and was named after Jose Figueroa, the Mexican governor of California from 1833 to 1835. The San Rafael area of Pasadena is named after Rancho San Rafael, which extended west from the Arroyo Seco, and included Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Glendale and parts of Burbank. Mexican Governor, Pedro Fages in 1784, granted the rancho to Jose Maria Verdugo. San Fernando Road is also crossed by the freeway and is named after the Mission San Fernando Rey, which was founded in 1797. Thirty years earlier, Gaspar de Portola and his men camped near the present location of Encino where he noted in his journals that he came across ‘a large village of heathens, very friendly and docile’. Traveling over the route between Pasadena and Ventura there are many Native American named locations such as Cahuega, Topanga and Malibu. The trip west along the 210-134 freeways from Pasadena to Ventura and on to Santa Barbara is a very scenic drive with spectacular ocean views. The City of Camarillo offers
a unique history since the time of its namesake founder and has a number of excellent restaurants to enjoy while driving up the coast. One of them is Bandits Grill and Bar located at 1980 Ventura Boulevard. Their menu offers wood fried barbeque selections, steaks & prime ribs and tasty and unique sandwiches. It also offers a variety of vintage pictures of early Camarillo, and of course some wellknown bandits. The trip to Camarillo is an easy one-day journey with great views, food and history all available for those who want to spend a leisure day on the road…..

Brave New World: So the thoughts and belief system of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling gets exposed...at roughly the same time the NAACP is about to give him an award for his good deeds in matters of race. Assessment: Both Sterling and the NAACP are bankrupt morally. Good News Department: The Clippers will get a new owner faster than you can say Marge Schott. The sweetest of ironies would be an ownership group headed by Earvin “Magic” Johnson. Note to Magic Johnson: I’d be happy to take a picture with you. Department of Income Inequality: Minnesota Twins right fielder/ first baseman Chris Colabello is second in the American League in runs batted in with 27. Colabello, 30 and in his rookie year, is making $505,000. In third place is Baltimore Oriole outfielder Nelson Cruz who is making $8,000,000. The New York Yankees are paying $15,000,000 to Carlos Beltran and he has less than half the RBI’s Colabello has with 13. Things to Keep an Eye on: The Alhambra Moors baseball team has won eight in a row. Head Coach Steve Gewecke’s teams are generally among the most fundamentally sound in the area and are always capable of making a deep, deep run in the playoffs. Reminder: El Monte American Little League, which has played its games at Pioneer Park roughly since the Pilgrims first crossed the Atlantic on the Mayflower, is playing its games at Lambert Park this season, which is the home of El Monte National. Pioneer Park is currently under going renovations. If You Don’t Know Department: Long time NBA coach and personality Dr. Jack Ramsay died over the weekend at the age of 89 in his sleep. Ramsay coached the the 1976-1977 Portland Trailblazers to the NBA championship with a four games to two victory over the Dr. J (Julius Erving) led Philadelphia 76ers.

I couldn’t stand Ramsay then because the Trailblazers swept the Lakers in the Western Conference finals, but as the years went on I came to realize he was important to the game of basketball. The NBA which is suffering, will suffer all the more with the likes of Jack Ramsay departing. Happy Birthday this week to: 4/30: Longtime area coach and San Gabriel alum Jude Oliva turns 34. 5/4: Former Temple City basketball forward Ryan Bateman turns 37. 5/5: Longtime area Little League coach Gerald “Daddy Wags” Wagner turns 47. 5/6: Former Temple City National President Kristen Dearth turns ‘even younger’. Spring Breaks Are Over While we hope everyone had a good time, we are very happy that all of the Easter/ Spring Vacations/Breaks are over. All our coverage area teams will be active this coming week. This question is making the rounds with various softball associations (American Softball Association, Little League, NCAA, & United States Specialty Sports Association) but as of now the decision to wear the gear is left up to the participant. The USSSA issued its position on the “Use of Protective Equipment”: “As a general rule, USSSA continues its long standing policy of permitting baseball and softball players to deter-

The Peterson Principle By Tim Peterson
And the Clippers thought it was hard to get free agents to sign before. They may never get another one after Donald Sterling's latest comments. In fact they might have trouble signing draft picks. If nothing else, this proves without a doubt that they are cursed. In the midst of potentially their greatest season ever, Sterling’s racist rant is made public. The timing couldn't have been worse. This could have far greater repercussions than a Danny Manning knee or a Blake Griffin ACL. Even worse than a Michael Olowakandi draft pick. This could possibly make the franchise irrelevant if Sterling remains as owner. I can't imagine Chris Paul re upping when the time comes. The Clipper players – Paul and Griffin – said as a team they weren't distracted but anybody that saw them come out in the first quarter Sunday knew different. Racism is still is an issue, even in 2014, but in Sterling's case you have to wonder if he is also going senile. His roster consists of 12 of 14 players that are black and his coach is black. Yet he doesn't want any black people coming to his games? Racism and stupidity is a bad combination. Sterling couldn't have picked a worse person to tick off than Magic Johnson. With all of the connections that Johnson has he could probably ruin the Clippers with a couple of phone calls. I still can't figure out why Mark Jackson is on the hot seat. Vince Carter is still playing? Think how good Oklahoma City would be with James Harden still on the roster. The Thunder would be immediate championship contenders. The Houston -Portland series is the most evenly matched of all the first round playoff matchups. Absolutely great games every time out. Damian Lillard, who is in is second year, is one of the top five point guards in the league and definitely the most underrated. He has been unbelievable in this series. A report on Saturday said the Lakers are planning to bring Mike D'Antoni back next year. There may be two irrelevant teams in LA. Big George Hernandez came up with a good question over the weekend on his Facebook page. He asked, that given that Mike Trout is the best player in
the game, who would you take between Bryce Harper and Yasiel Puig? Some took Puig and some took Harper but the conversation eventually turned to Miguel Cabrera as the top player. One guy said Cabrera is the top player regardless of the circumstances. I suggested that he is too old and that the Detroit Tiger GM would trade Cabrera in a heartbeat for either Puig or Harper given their youthespecially if you're starting a team. Of course I was lambasted. Wouldn't that be like taking Kobe Bryant over LeBron James? Just a question. Big George had my back though. Thanks my man. That's my principle. while pitchers receive 7% and runners receive 2%. 31% of facial injuries occur in warm-ups or practice. This will be interesting to watch not only in softball, but with a new push to give the pitchers more protection in baseball from the youth all the way up to the Major League levels. On A Roll: The Alhambra Moors are 15-2, winners of eight in a row, and are undefeated in Almont League play. Offensively they are being led
by the big three of Andrew Prieto, Marco Briones, and Christian Maciel. Each have knocked in ten runs. On the mound Briones is 5-0 with an earned run average of 0.18 in 40 innings of work. He’s fanned 59 batters and walked only 11. How Good? How good have the Monrovia Wildcats been in baseball over the last 10 years. They’ve won a CIF title, they’ve made the playoffs each season, they’ve finished first six times, and have finished no lower than second in the other years.
In Rio Hondo League play they have gone 10231-1. Overall the Wildcats a record of 185-78-4. The constant through all of this besides great players? Try head coach Dave Moore, and his co-head coach, since 2007, Brad Blackmore. Coach Moore first took over the Monrovia baseball program in 1984. opportunity for the kids to explore a variety of scientific study.” A beautiful display of watercolor art covered the wall in the art class where students put brush to canvas and created beautiful masterpieces. “It is fun painting,” said Gustavo who was painting a Canadian goose on his canvas. “I decided to paint the goose because all my friends call me Goose. Doing the water color was fun but I think I like the canvas better.” This year’s institute included college students from Eco Voices who worked with the GATE students and shared their scientific knowledge. “I was greatly impressed with the students and their motivation for learning,” said Rachel from Eco Voices. “During their experimentations they displayed higher level thinking and many of them excelled better than some college students I’ve worked with. I was very proud of them.” The Mountain View School District greatly appreciates the dedication and
effort of the instructors and the Youth Science Center for providing such an enriching learning experience for students. “The Saturday GATE Institute offers our students an incredible opportunity to explore science, art and technology in depth and the expertise brought to the program by Dr. Shope, Mr. Burns, Mr. Tanaka, Mrs. Haro and the Eco Voices students is tremendous,” said Darin DeKnikker, Acting Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. “It’s always great to see the excitement and enthusiasm for learning displayed by the students as they engage in the activities.”

Saturday GATE InstitutePage 2 “Mixing the items together made a gas that created carbon dioxide which shot the container in the air,” said Lyza, an 8th grader from Monte Vista. “I really like doing all the science experiments but the best part of the Saturday GATE program is getting to hang out with friends and still learn a lot of stuff,” she said. “Dissecting a squid was awesome!” said 4th grader, Elyana. “It was sort of gross but cool and we learned about the squid’s organs. I like the Saturday classes because we get to do stuff that’s different from what we do in class at school.” According to Patricia Stanzon, YSC instructor, the students were very organized and did a terrific job with their studies. “It’s incredible how Mountain View School District provides this for the students.
