Savannah Memorial Park Honors Our Fallen Soldiers
Past or Current Resident
by Christopher Chen Rosemead
Almost every town has at least one member that serves or has served on the battlefield. Rosemead is no different in this regard. Every Memorial Day, the Savannah Memorial Park has a formal ceremony to commemorate those who have fought for our country and even those who continue to do so. The program opened up with the traditional presentation of colors and Pledge of Allegiance, followed up by a completely sincere version of the National Anthem sung by El Monte citizen, Tina Flores. These formalities aside, the ceremony was intended to celebrate the soldiers who fought and still continue to fight around the world. Much of the speeches were devoted to reiterating the veteran's effects on our daily lives. Regardless of all the controversy that tends to surround the role of the U.S. military, soldiers still do fight the battles so that
everyone back home can feel secure. "Our success stands on the shoulders [the soldiers'] sacrifice," El Monte Cemetery Association President Joanne Russell-Chavez said. The invocation speech by Chaplain Don Abraham of American Legion, Post #748 in particular explicitly presented the role of the soldier as a protector of the average U.S. citizen. He acknowledged in his speech that there are homes now missing certain loved ones who have perished in the war. "So many have given that level of devotion so that we may be free," Abraham said. However, true to the type of speech, Abraham entreated God to help those who were in need of comfort. Closely following Abraham was U.S. Army veteran Janet Chin, who gave her own speech about the veterans who gave their lives for America. Chin has possibly

Student's Corner A “Mulan” of the Civil War History is an art of interpretation and example. However, like the crevices of Alaskan glaciers, there are hidden secrets that history hesitates to reveal. There are a variety of factors that force a story or character to be hidden and suppressed from the world. Some of these factors include gender, race, and historical events. For instance, the American Civil War of the 1800s resonate to most as a time of the abolition of slavery, Abraham Lincoln exercising presidential power, and a fight between the North and the South. However, there is much more to the story- and it wasn’t just fought between two races, but many migrants and natives of the country. What if I told you that it wasn’t just men in the war- that there were women, too? These women, though they disguised themselves
Ashley Lanuza, contributing student writer from San Gabriel Mission High School.
as men, led the world into further change and understanding. Rebel is an hour-long PBS Documentary that depicts the unconventional life of secret soldier Loreta Velazquez. Velazquez was a Latina who, after losing her family, disguised herself as a male and fought as a soldier for the American Civil War. She also became a doublespy for both the Northern and Southern sides of the USA. Then, General Early, disliking Velazquez’s novel “Woman in Battle,” utilized Velazquez’s identity to destroy her public reputation and suppress her story in history. Loreta Velazquez’s experiences hide under the shadows of United States’
history because her identity as a Latin American female and a double-spy has put her under ridicule by General Early; evidently, Early’s critical comments on Velazquez’s novel “Woman in Battle” suppressed her story with social stigma around Velazquez, her identity, and her occupations. Evidently, a woman’s courageous actions to fight for her country hid her from the forefront of United States history, possibly due to her ethnicity, gender, or career choice. How many other experiences, stories, and events are hidden from popular history that, if one day exposed, may transform how people perceive the past?
Webb'S Rules BOOT CAMP by Eugene R. Webb
In Boot Camp you don't have any rights; We go from early morning till late at night. We had been hiking and marching, a very rough day; But the D.I. always has it his own way.
Catch up on the Latest News and Events on our Facebook and Website.
He wanted us to study the M-1 Rifle and parts; This was not near and dear to my heart. We were really a big bunch of kids; But studying is what we did. It was not the answers the D.I. wanted to hear; So he sent us back to the huts with our gear. He did this over and over again; I thought, "when is this all going to end"? There wasn't even one little smile; And this continued for quite awhile. So I thought I'd take a chance; The D.I. looked at me with a funny glance. I was thinking I had enough of this man;

So I stood up and raised my hand. I said, "when do we get to take a shower"? Then he threw a rifle at me with all his power. "Do up and on shoulders till I tell you to stop"; The rifle got so heavy I thought I would drop. But I thought I will show him; So I wasn't about to give in. The D.I. asked, "any more questions at this time"? We all quietly got up and strolled out in a line.

Chalk Talk Rosemead High Receives Whole Kids Grant by Anne Donofrio-Holter
Rosemead High School has received a $2,000 Whole Kids Foundation Grant for its Best of Thymes edible garden, which students established as part of the Green Apple Day of Service. "The goal of the garden is to create smarter, healthier, more inspired students," said Rosemead High School teacher and garden coordinator Joe Vasquez. "The grant allows students to learn more about sustainability and health by immersing

themselves in real science." Students have been excitedly watching lettuce and cabbage beds sprout and grow as their garden progresses at a natural pace. Students plan to plant and harvest foods that will help them engage culturally through food. They are also looking to engage other members of the campus through succulent propagation and cut flower gardens, which will use raised beds purchased by principal Dr. Brian Bristol. Students have also experimented with a vertical garden which they designed and installed and are turning an empty patch near the school's marquee, on Mission Drive and Rosemead Boulevard, into a water-wise grade. Students are digging shallow trenches to collect rain water and sprinkler runoff, as well as to retain the mulch they will be spreading over the bare ground. The
dirt from the trenches will be used to create mounds where students will plant water-wise plants such as salvia, Mexican sage and bougainvillea. Students have also created a rain garden which will be filed with annual wild flowers. Future plans include irrigating the planter beds. "We are also planning to create native habitats for birds and pollinators on campus," said Vasquez. According to Vasquez, the grant will be used to expand and sustain the garden. "We will build more beds and create cross curricular opportunities," he said. "Produce grown will either be donated to local groups or sold to campus staff as part of a community supported agriculture program. We hope this will promote sustainability among our students."
Mountain View High Students Attend FHA-HERO State Meeting by Anne Donofrio-Holter
Mountain View High School FHA-HERO (the California Affiliate of Family, Careers and Community Leaders of America) students attended the organization's 68th annual state leadership meeting held recently in Fresno. This year's theme, Spirit of Adventure, provided students with an opportunity to hear top-notch presenters, attend student leadership sessions and career development workshops, and participate in the state finals competitive recognition events. Competitive events took place in leadership and career development areas including Community Involvement, Apparel Construction, Energy and Resource Conservation, Nutrition Education, Child Development, Commercial Food Preparation, Consumer Education, Culinary Arts Display, Fashion Design, Interior Design, Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation, and Menu Planning and Table Display. “FHA-HERO is a career technical student organization for those in grades 7 through 12 who are enrolled in Home Economics Careers and Technology programs in California public schools,” said Mountain View High School advisor Lori Chavez. “The focus of the
organization is to prepare students for roles as family members, citizens and workers in some of California's fastest growing industries.” There are nine industry sector pathways included in Home Economics Careers and Technology education including child development, education, consumer services, family and human services, fashion design and merchandising, interior design, food science, dietetics, and nutrition, food service and hospitality and tourism and recreation. According to Chavez, the FHA-HERO state leadership meeting is a great opportunity for students to meet their peers from all over California, grow personally, obtain leadership training, develop skills and explore future careers. "They learn how to be better students, family members and human beings," she said. "The experience is worthwhile for all students and rewarding as an advisor to see the growth that takes place in these students as
they participate in FHA-HERO activities." Recently, Mountain View High School FHA-HERO students volunteered at Earthworks Farm in South El Monte's Whittier Narrows Recreational Area. There, students learned about urban farming as they pulled weeds, picked up debris and removed old broccoli plants. Students also volunteered at A Taste of El Monte/South El Monte serving food and helping with cleanup. Approximately 750 students, advisors, administrators, and business and industry representatives from across the state attended this year's leadership meeting.
"The garden integrates classroom learning with long-term real world gardening projects, motivating students to persist in their studies and to graduation," said Bristol. "We are very grateful to the Whole Kids Foundation
for this generous donation," said Vasquez. "Through our garden, we hope to significantly raise the level of students' understanding and perceived responsibility for environmental stewardship and community health."
Notebooks Enable El Monte High Students to Emulate Writers by Anne Donofrio-Holter
The Write Thing, the brainchild of El Monte High School journalism teacher Sean Maher, encourages students to not only practice their writing skills, but to tell their own story. "Writing gives voice to those who often feel unheard, especially teenagers," said Maher. "Our writing club shows my high school students, 90% of who speak a language other than English at home and live below the poverty line, how to create their own powerful stories." Funding for the notebooks needed for the project was made possible thanks to contributions to DonorsChoose. org. According to Maher, notebooks of their own will help students capture and connect to key themes that create a compelling story. They will learn to "transform what would otherwise be a dry recitation of events, accomplishments, and statistics into a gripping narrative, shaping language to create dramatic valleys and peaks that keep the reader/listener’s interest." These stories could form the basis for “first-in-family” college application essays or be used to prepare for the Moth High School StorySlam,” a chance for young people to be heard on Los
Angeles public radio. "A few minutes can stretch into a couple of hours without breaking the self-delusion that because students are at their computer, they are therefore working," said Maher. "Pen and paper physically removes kids from the computer, especially the internet." Maher added that he and his students were very grateful to all the donors that helped make the project possible. DonorsChoose.org is "an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need." Public school teachers across the United States can post classroom project requests on the site and donors can give any amount to the project that most interests them. "The slower speed of longhand is better for thinking. Kids think harder about one good sentence following another," said Maher. "There’s something special about notebooks. They make someone feel like a “real” writer." "We’ve been telling stories for thousands of years, and understand storytelling’s powerful effect on hearts and minds. We want our high school students to know how to create their own powerful stories," he added.

by Joe Castillo Historic Project …. In July 1969, man walked on the moon for the first time. It was one of America’s greatest achievements and it took a lot of skilled technicians to achieve complete success. One of those men was Al Caredio, a University of California, Berkeley graduate in Mechanical Engineering who worked on the US Apollo moon project. Employed as an engineer with Grumman Aircraft in New York, Caredio was assigned to the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) sub-project. The LEM was to carry two astronauts from the orbiting Apollo aircraft to the surface of the moon and back to the Apollo. The contract to design and build the LEM was awarded to Grumman in 1962 for $350 million. In an interview last week, Caredio indicated that the biggest challenge was to keep the LEM as lightweight as possible which required new raw materials, many of which were not found in abundant amounts. One of the new materials was titanium which was a light but extremely strong base material. Once the materials were located and the LEM was built, it was tested and then tested again until everything was set to go. Though a complex and complicated process, the engineers were confident the LEM would work. The entire Apollo moon project team worked together with a common goal of achieving success on the project. Caredio worked six days a week while in the project but it was well worth it. The Apollo Moon Project in 1969 was the first of six moon landings which the LEM was used. It would be the used as the primary design for future lunar excursion modules, a design which Al Caredio and the other mechanical engineers on the project can be very proud to be part of…… Riviera …. One of the finest golf courses in the Los Angeles area is the Riviera Country Club. It was built in the 1920’s by golf architect George Thomas Jr., whose biggest challenge was to design the course through the scenic but hilly landscape of Pacific Palisades which was covered with thick barranca growth. Within two years of its opening in 1927, the course hosted the Los Angeles
Open, won by Macdonald Smith. It also hosted the LA Open in in 1930 and 1941, in the years 1945 to 1953, and then resumed hosting it in 1973. A roll call of Hall of Famers has won the LA Open on Riviera including Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Tommy Bolt, Tom Watson and Johnny Miller. In addition, Riviera was also the capital of polo in the 1920’s and 1930’s, and played host to the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games for Equestrian events. Columnist Jim Murray of the Los Angeles Times once wrote that “It may be most beautiful of Los Angeles area golf courses, but it’s a monster.” Sounds like golfs’ answer to Beauty and the Beast.

This year’s Miss Friendly EM and SEM Queen is Raquel De Leon. Raquel is currently a junior attending Arroyo High School. In her fourteen years as a resident of El Monte, she has fallen in love with the beautiful city and has become an active member of this community. Raquel’s love for her community has led her to become involved with the Miss Friendly EM and SEM Pageant and an explorer with the El Monte Police Explorer Program, which has allowed her to donate hundreds of hours of service. Additionally, Raquel works with young children in the community as an assistant gymnastics coach. Raquel understands the
importance of education. As a result, she has chosen to challenge herself by enrolling in several AP and accelerated courses. Raquel’s desire to pursue higher education has allowed her to become a member of AVID. She hopes her efforts will be rewarded by attaining her Bachelor’s Degree in Women's Studies at the university of her choice. While she is often occupied with school, the Police Explorer Program and her responsibilities as Miss Friendly EM and SEM, Raquel ensures that time is made to enjoy the company of her seven siblings and nine nieces and nephews. In her free time, Raquel works diligently to improve her American Sign
Language and indulges in the autobiographies of her female role models, such as Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Queen Raquel visited the KMVR-DB (www.midvalleyradio.net) studio to sit down and talk with Carlos P. and Taylor G. on his radio show “Back In Da Dayz with Carlos P.” Tune in this Saturday at 6 p.m. to hear the exclusive interview with Queen Raquel De Leon. Sierra Vista Still Alive by Joe Torosian Baldwin Park

Monrovia, Temple City, and Rio Hondo Prep are still alive in baseball. Sierra Vista is still alive in softball, but the rest of the area took a beating in the CIF playoffs this week. We’re not talking about borderline bubble teams that barely made the playoffs, but powerful squads like the South El Monte softball team got bounced. Now we are just a few days away from looking forward to the 2015-2016 prep athletic season. ***I’d personally like to thank the Dodgers for providing the Giants fans I was spending vacation with plenty of ammunition to verbally abuse me. Up until this recent Giants sweep of the Bums I felt like I could argue for any lost cause, but not this time. I make a good chunk of my living by talking, but the Dodgers poor play left me without words. Angelica Ochoa’s bottom of the eighth home run blast gave Sierra Vista a 4-3 victory over Victor Valley in the first round of the Division V CIF playoffs. The homer was Ochoa’s second of the season, but
it wasn’t her only moment of the day. The senior right hander pitched eight innings and struck eight batters to win her ninth game. Her totals on the season are now 97 strike outs in 74.2 innings of work.
Third baseman Lyndsi King added a run scoring single to aid the cause. The Dons, winners of thirteen in a row (have not lost since March 24th), will host Louisville (Woodland Hills) on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

Eric Herrera also had a base hit and an RBI. Temple City 4 Arroyo 3 Kevin Chavez allowed just one earned run and Ryan Lewis had three hits to lead Temple City to a 4-3 win over Mission Valley League
Champion Arroyo Thursday to advance in the Division 5 playoffs. It was the Rams’ second playoff victory of the week. They shut out Banning on Tuesday. Gordon Gets Game Winner for Galaxy
The Peterson Principle By Tim Peterson
Wow, for awhile there I thought the Galaxy was going to outscore the Dodgers for the week. We've barely reached Memorial Day but when they've lost all six in San Francisco including three consecutive shutouts is it too early to start worrying about the Dodgers? The Clippers collapse was epic, maybe even catastrophic in terms of long term effects on the franchise, but Magic Johnson's tweet, “The Clippers are still the Clippers,” was weak. It showed a lack of class and was just unnecessary piling on. Also, what's with Magic tweeting out congratulations every time a team advanced to the Conference Finals? I never knew Earvin was such a big Atlanta Hawks fan. Even Magic understands that collapse or no, the Clippers are still the best team in LA right now. By the way, doesn't he have other things to worry about? How long is this TV disaster that prevents 70 percent of fans in Los Angeles watching Dodger games going to last? Hey Magic, get in a room with Time Warner, DirecTV and whoever else is involved and get this thing resolved. Is it ok for me to tweet that this is a matter of the Dodgers still being the Dodgers? Nothing out of Temple City as of yet. Still screening applicants, still interviewing. It's strange that Memorial Day will have come and gone and we're still talking about high school football coaching openings. El Rancho is still open, too. Should there be a deadline as to what date coaches could resign or get fired? For instance, let's say after April 1 no head coaching changes can be made. It will never happen but it is something to think about. Speaking of Temple City, the baseball team isn't too bad. The Rams didn't have a great year, at least not by their standards, in the regular season going 5-6 in the Rio Hondo League and 15-9 overall. But after the first week of the CIF playoffs, TC is still alive. Josh Speakes threw a complete game shutout over Banning Tuesday and Thursday, the Rams beat Arroyo on the road. Arroyo went unbeaten in the Mission Valley League but Kevin Chavez allowed just one unearned run in leading TC to a 4-3 victory. Don't look now but the Rams could make a deep playoff run. They face Citrus Hill Tuesday at home.

Magic might be a big Atlanta Hawks fan but that doesn't seem to be helping them in the Eastern Conference Finals. With Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving both out for Cleveland, shouldn't Atlanta have done better than losing the first two at home? Does the mere sight of LeBron James scare them into oblivion? Is this a case of the Hawks still being the Hawks? If the Lakers take anybody other than Jahlil Okafor or Karl-Anthony Towns with the second pick in the NBA Draft they butchered it. It will just be a case of Mitch Kupchak still being Mitch Kupchak. That's my principle. That’s my principle. Tim can be reached at tim@ midvalleysports.com or on Twitter @tspeterson40

1-0 win over Houston Friday night before 20,195 at Stub Hub Center. Gordon didn’t enter the game until the 69th minute but he had the biggest impact of the match. “My impressions right now of Gordon are very good. He understands how to play at the end of games,” said Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena.
Robbie Keane set up the goal with a perfect cross pass to Gordon who was waiting in the penalty area. Keane, who has been out with a groin strain since April 14, entered the game in the 56th minute and gave LA the spark it needed. The Galaxy, coming off of a 4-0 loss to Orlando last week looked like they would come up scoreless again. In the first half Gyasi Zardes was wide left in the 15th minute. Miko Vayrynen had a shot in front that was deflected high over the net in the 44th minute. But other than that the opportunities were few and far between. Jaime Penedo gave the Galaxy a lift when he stopped Houston’s Will Bruin on a break away early in the contest. The Galaxy dominated the time of possession in the first half 65% to 35 for Houston. They also led in shots on goal 8-5 but were still locked in a scoreless tie. “It’s nice to get the three points. We need to take advantage of the games at home,” Arena said. “But we also need to finish out games. I mean right after we scored the goal we got a red card.” The Galaxy improved to 4-4-5 with the victory while the Dynamo fell to 4-5-4.

As a part of the community she said she felt she needed to participate. "[The people of Rosemead] are my family," she said. Further compounding the message was the rather grim yet somehow optimistic poem "Flanders Field," read by community member David Siegrist. The poem portrays a vibrant field whose appearance hides its role as a battlefield now housing the restless corpses of those who died in World War I. However, this cer-

According to the Russell-Chavez, this was the first year the ceremony featured portrayals. "We wanted it to be a memorial," Russell-Chavez said. The biographies of each veteran were compiled by Beverly Morten, the vice president of the El Monte Cemetery Association. In an interview with Mid Valley News," Morten told us she compiled the bios from articles written in the past. As a genealogist, Morten already had some knowledge about each of the veterans. Former Drive-In Turned Music Mecca by Sal Gomez Norwalk
After a 40+ hour work week, people look to be entertained and to find a way to get the most fun for their hard earned dollar. Recently
tickets have sky rocketed, where a night out for two can easily drain your bank account of 200 or 300+ dollars a night. Never fear music lovers. Filling the gap and help-

is the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet. Yes...you heard it right. Every weekend beginning Friday nights through Sunday afternoons, the former drive in theater hosts a year-long calendar of wall to wall bands. With bands the likes of tribute artists, former pop & rock bands from the 70's, 80's and 90's, the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet is becoming a mecca hot bed for live music. With a first rate sound stage and lighting gear bands from all over the southland as well as a few from other parts of the state and country swoop in, plug in and bring the crowd in attendance to their feet. Disneyland Celebrates, Tomorrowland Stumbles by Glen Maldonado National
May 22nd was a busy day in Anaheim. Starting at 6am to 6am the next day, Disneyland and California Adventure were open for 24 hours. I attended the event and it
was chaos. By the time it was 3pm, Disneyland was full and not allowing anybody else in. It got very full that eventually both parks were full and not allowing anyone in, making the lines just to enter the bag check area stretch all the way to
the end of Downtown Disney. It was the busiest day I have ever seen at Disneyland. It was the first day of Disneyland’s Celebration for its 60th anniversary. Introducing a new parade, fireworks, decorations, and a ton of merchandise. Also coming out on Friday was the movie “Tomorowland.” Bound by a shared destiny, a teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boygenius inventor embark on a mission to unearth the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory. “Tomorrowland” stars George Clooney (Gravity), Britt Robertson (Dan in Real Life), Raffey Cassidy (Dark Shadows), and Hugh Laurie (House). The film is a celebration of the achievements that Walt Disney did with the creations he made for the Chicago World’s Fair. Walt Disney had a suitcase labeled 1952. It had the vision of a world of tomorrow that Walt dreamed of and he added pieces to the case that he wanted envisioned in his world. One interesting piece in the case was a blueprint to “It’s a Small World.” These plans were for the World’s Fair and featured a hidden basement that we don’t know if it was ever built. Well, there were many things in this case and each piece inspired the movie “Tomorrowland.” All though I do love the story of how “Tomorrowland”
tribute bands are the hottest draws to this music venue; from tributes to The Beatles to The Who, Queen, KISS, Elton John and many more. All of them bringing along a loyal following that turn the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet stage into the next happening place for live music. And that's not all. A large array of food can be purchased for lunch or dinner. Not to mention a first rate beer garden serving up pints of your favorite brewed beverage that make this locale a true night out on the town. So how much does it cost for people to attend one of
these weekend concerts? How does a buck sound? Yup...one dollar is all that it will cost you each day to attend a full weekend of outstanding live entertainment. For more info visit them at: http://sfsswapmeet.com/

came to be, it does have some flaws. The story was a bit confusing and it was hard to really understand what “Tomorrowland” really was, and its origins. There were slow parts in the movie and it seemed a bit too long. Overall, George Clooney
and the rest of the cast did a great job but the film just didn’t live up to its expectations. At least the Disneyland celebration lived up to my expectations. “Tomorrowland” gets a C+, Award Level Critics Choice.
