Honoring A Beloved Uncle and Fallen Soldier
El Monte

brain cancer that had spread and ultimately led to the passing of Uncle Andy on April 10, 1955. I honor my Uncle Andy on Memorial Day because even though I only have faint memories of him, my parents kept his spirit alive for me. I know he wanted me to be born on his birthday, January 6th, but I came a day early. I have inherited my love for writing from my Uncle Andy, and for that I will forever be grateful. I visited his grave in San Diego at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on Cabrillo Memorial Drive. As I laid my hand on his gravestone, tears welled up thinking about everything my uncle endured. I only wished we had had more time together. Recently, while going through some old boxes at my mom’s house, I found a birthday card
El Monte
my mom had saved from my Uncle Andy for my second birthday, just three months before he died. He wrote on it, “I will love you always, Uncle Andy.” So to all of the brave men and women, who have served our country, thank you. We honor your service to our country. And, to my Uncle Andy, “I will always love you.”
A Soldier’s Last Letter to His Mother Compliments: El Monte VFW Post 10218, Mike Felix
When the postman delivered a letter It filled her dear heart full of Joy But she didn’t know ‘til she read the inside That it would be the last word from her darling boy. Dear Mom, was the way that it started I miss you so much, it went on And mom, I didn’t know that I loved you so And I’ll prove it when this war is won. Now, I’m writing this down in a trench, Mom Don’t scold if it isn’t so neat For you know as you did, when I was a Kid And I came home with mud on My feet. Now the captain just gave us our orders And Mom you know, we’ll carry them through And I’ll finish this letter the first chance I get But for now I’ll just say, I love you. Then the Mother’s old hand began to tremble As she fought against tears in her eyes For there came a shame as there was no name Then she knew that her darling had died. That night as she knelt by her bedside She prayed, Lord above, hear my pleas And protect all the sons & daughters who are fighting tonight And please God, Keep America FREE!
Memorial Day Annual Clean Up a Great Success
We want to thank everyone that was there to help up clean up the Savannah cemetery and get it ready for our Memorial Day Ceremony. Thank you, Detective Larry Fry and the Community Service Workers from El Monte, for showing up and cleaning around the headstones. They have done a great job helping us at the cemetery once or twice a month. Jeff Haskings, one of our board members came with about 60 people to help his Boy Scout #53 , Inland Empire Council, work on the Eagle Scout project for a couple of their troop. They did a great job of lifting up some of the headstones that are sinking, they also repaired a couple of the larger head-

stones that were tilted. They even uncovered 3 or 4 headstones that had been covered by the grass. They also trimmed some of the trees and cut off dead branches, Jeff Fouts from Rosemead with a few of his Troop 176 boys to aid in the project, and help around the cemetery. Troop 176 is the one that has done a great deal of work lifting some of the headstones in the past. We would also like to thank El Monte Troop 551 for putting all of the flags around the fence line, and the members of Rosemead High School Key Club for coming to help Troop 551 clean off the headstones for all of our Veterans. We have 109 veterans, and it is not an easy job.

There were many more that came to help, and we want to also thank them also. The Cemetery is truly a Historic Place and if you haven't been there, we hope you will stop by and take the self-tour. The
Visitor Gate is always opened. The cemetery is located at 9263 Valley Blvd., Rosemead. If you would like more information please call Janice Wiggins White, 626-443-8325

Around Town by Mavis Hansen Did you have a great MEMORIAL DAY? California is a great state to celebrate any holiday, with so many things and events to attend. Parks, theme parks, Stadiums for all types of sports activities, theatres, restaurants, you name it, from the mountains to the beach and all else in between, so many places to be able to visit or attend. A wonderful time to spend with family or friends at home by the pool, patio, backyard, wherever and with a variety of food to choose from, for so many a great backyard Bar B-Q is enjoyed. Whatever you did and where ever you were I hope that you remembered to fly your flag proudly and to do something for our veterans who have given so much for us. In South Pasadena, The Woman’s Club, has an annual tradition of working for two days on OPERATION COOKIE. Decorated boxes are filled with cookies that have been donated by business, individuals, groups, etc. and volunteers pack the containers with a variety of cookies, many homemade. These boxes of cookies are then taken and distributed to Veterans at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital, many of the Veterans specialized hospital units and homeless veterans. Operation Cookie is fantastic volunteer project that brings joy and a warm thank you to so many of those veterans who gave so much of their lives so that we could enjoy ours. It is so amazing to hear someone remark, “I have never heard of your organization before”. ! Having just returned from a California State Federation of Women’s Clubs 110th Annual Convention, held at the Crown Plaza LAX Hotel in Los Angeles, and sitting amidst nearly 200 women who belong to Women’s Clubs throughout the State of California, from San Diego to the borders of Oregon and Nevada, from the mountains to the seashores and all the cities and towns in between, makes it difficult for me to understand, as we have so many persons that belong to volunteer organizations such as Women’s Clubs: General Federation, State Federation and local clubs, Soroptimist International, state & local organizations, Business and Professional Women, Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary, some of the greatest volunteer organization in our nation. No matter what you like to do, there is an organization for you. The California Federation of Women’s Clubs boasts nearly 13,000 members, divided into four Areas. Presi-
dent of the GFWC California Federation of Women’s Clubs is Valerie Barnes. The SAN GABRIEL VALLEY DISTRICT OF WOMEN’S CLUBS were Awarded Certificates for: ARTS, Community Service Program, 1st Place, Terry Perkins Chairman; DUARTE WOMAN’S CLUB Arts Community Service Program, Kathy Delker Chairman; ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN PROGRAM, 1ST Place, Donna Distelrath, Chairman; DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS & PREVENTION PROGRAM, 1ST Place, Kim Plater Chairman; GWFC COVINA WOMEN’S CLUB, Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Program, 1st Place, Chairman Kim Plater; EDUCATION COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM 1ST Place, Esthela Torres de Siegrist, Chairman; EL MONTE WOMEN’S CLUB, Education Community Service Program, 1st Place, Chairman Esthela Torres de Siegrist; HABITAT FOR HUMANITY – CFWC President’s Project, 1st Place, Chairman Vivian Olivas; WOMEN’S CLUB OF WEST COVINA, Habitat for Humanity, CFWC President’s Project, 1st Place, Chairman Marla Altman; HOME LIFE COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM, 1st Place, Chairman Vivian Olivas; HOME LIFE PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM, 1st Place, Chairman Vivian Olivas; DUARTE WOMAN’S CLUB, MembershipProgram – Area C First Place; PUBLIC ISSUES COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM, First Place, Chairman Sandra Taylor; WOMEN’S HISTORY AND RESOURCE CENTER, First Place, Chairman Victoria Guagliardo. Student's Corner Summer Air
Yesenia Melgar, contributing student writer from San Gabriel Mission High School. by Yesenia Melgar
It will officially be summer on June 21, 2013, and just imagine what the temperatures will be! It’s the perfect time to go swimming, or hang out at the beach with our friends causing mayhem, and enjoying one another as many of us will be moving on to a fast paced year. Either way, we are going to be attracted to wherever there is water and loud music.
This summer may find you in a transition from teenager to an adult. Yes, I am speaking to those juniors who will become seniors in a matter of weeks. Soon the high school era will end and the beginning of college will lead many to a new state, or even country. So this summer is going to be our last time as teens, and then it all begins to move in fast motion.
Summer to many of us will involve summer school, a job, or maybe both. Either way we will still find time for our friends. Whether it will be keeping cool at the mall, or at a pool party, the summer will bring many adventures our way. Keep it together for only four more weeks, then schools out and we progress to another stage in our lives.

Payne School Fifth Grader Earns Affair of the Heart 1000 Accelerated Reader Points Arcadia High School
El Monte
by Michele Earle
Payne Elementary School sixth grader, Mineda Tour’s passion for books, and love of reading has catapulted her to the head of her school as she earned 1000 Accelerated Reader points in the school’s Accelerated Reader (AR) program. AR is a successful reading product from Renaissance Learning that is widely used in schools throughout the nation. tional reading program. The program requires students to select books at their appropriate reading level and read them at their own pace. After completing the book students take computerized quizzes which assess reading practice, vocabulary practice, literacy skills and comprehension. AR points are given for each successfully completed quiz. “I’ve always liked to read and since I was 4-years-old I have asked my mom for books to read,” said Mineda. “My favorite types of books are adventure and mystery. I really like the Warrior Cat series by Erin Hunter.” Mineda’s teacher, Anamarie Williams is very proud of her for this great achievement. “Mineda is an avid reader and great role model for other students,” said Williams. “She set her goal of earning 1000 AR points early in the school year and she worked hard to reach that goal. We are very proud of her and happy to celebrate her achievement.” To earn the 1000 AR points Mineda read 100 books with an average of 300 pages each in seven months. “I read every day,” said Mineda. “On the weekends I can read for hours and hours and finish a whole book, but during the week the amount of time I can read depends on how much homework I have and the activities I have to go to.” Mineda appreciates how reading has helped her in other academic subjects like writing. She feels the many imaginative stories she’s read have helped boost her creativity and creative writing process. “I encourage everyone to read!” said Mineda. “It’s a great hobby and you can try different books like mystery, action or adventure. There’s something for everyone and you can definitely find a book in a genre you’d like,” she said. A special celebration was held to honor Mineda and her classmates who also achieved many AR points this school year.
On Mar. 16 at the 29th Annual Affair of the Heart dinner, ASB Accountant and previous Facilities Manager Mrs. Kathy Patterson was recognized, along with four other honorable figures at AHS, for their outstanding work of making AHS the wonderful place it is today. Directing the dinner was Lincoln Training Center (LTC), a Certified Community Rehabilitation Program, has a mission to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities by employing them in meaningful jobs in the community. The companies that provide jobs for LTC clients include Pacific Alliance Bank, Home Depot, and our very own AUSD! Currently at AHS, we have three wonderful LTC clients—Mr. Emmanuel Castillo, Mr. Wade Hartmann, Mr. Matthew Olvera as well as their supervisor Mr. Ernie Carranzal. In a letter of appreciation, AHS' Supervisor, Mrs. Patricia Weaver said, "The [LTC] crew works very hard from the moment they step foot on our campus until they leave...We are beyond pleased with the work that

these fine men perform for us daily." The LTC crew works very hard from 12:30 to 8:30 p.m., which is why both the crew and Mrs. Patterson were awarded a well deserved certificate of commendation for their service by Congresswoman Judy Chu at the dinner. "It's very heartwarming," Mrs. Patterson said about LTC's mission, while humbly attributing all credit to the LTC crew despite her own contributions. Throughout the dinner, distinguished individuals and companies were honored for their support of LTC's programs. When the crew and Mrs. Patterson received their awards, they were very happy and shocked. Though the many services they perform are tedious, the LTC crew always have a smile on their faces, showing their passion in helping others. Both Mrs. Patterson and the LTC crew's hard work have finally been recognized, and we are grateful for their wonderful service toward not only AHS, but the community as a whole.
WEBB'S RULES So Innocent And Naive by Eugene R. Webb
It all starts out so innocent and naive; What drinking can do, nobody would believe. Alcohol sneaks up when you least expect; Makes you sick and become a nervous wreck. Alcohol is the biggest killer we have today; Yet most people don't think of alcohol this way. So many homes have alcohol of some kind; Some think drinking water, is like beer or wine. I think I'll have a drink, you do voice; You may no longer have a choice. For that is how it affects some; And you could be that unlucky one. For once you acquire alcohol thinking; You'll find it is really hard to stop drinking. For drinking is like playing Russian Roulette; For things that haven't happen, can happen yet. Most people think drinking is not a crime; But it certainly is some of the time. People do criminal things, they think are not; It's only a crime when they get caught. So remember on alcohol you can get hooked; And sooner or later you might get booked. I can't think of one good thing alcohol can do; But I know it can make a fool out of you.

Little Green Oasis at Madrid Middle School El Monte
For years, the roughly 850 students attending Madrid Middle School in El Monte called the area just past their back steps “the Bones.” It was, literally, a dump – a no-man’s land between the school and an old metal factory littered with abandoned sofas, TVs, mattresses and other household trash. It was not the kind of place that invited nature based exploration or physical fitness training or recreation of any kind. But that was then. On May 29th, students, teachers, community leaders, and elected officials will gather to celebrate the now: new nature & exercise trail

Are you ready for rock-nroll? No, I am not referring to some of the groups at our upcoming Summer Concerts. As you might know we are overdue for the big earthquake coming to Southern California. Geologist from the University of California concluded that the largest quakes strike the San Andreas fault every 45 to 144 years – and the last big one was in 1857,
feeling not knowing when it is going to stop. If I had to choose, I would still like to live in California even with the earthquakes. After the windstorm and being without power for 5 days I am happy to announce that I am the proud owner of two Honda generators. Many thanks to Public Safety Officer Mr. Bryan Ariizumi for coordinating this
over 150 years ago! Temple City has been proactive by conducting the Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T). Temple City Public Safety in conjunction Los Angeles County Fire Department designed a three-Saturday course to educate residents on preparedness tactics, focusing on fire suppression, medical, search and rescue operations, disaster psychology and terrorism culminating with an interactive simulation exercise where participants and volunteers form mock disaster drills, learning how to search for and medically treat victims of major earthquakes and other crisis situations. Disasters come in many forms and are not predictable. The one thing that is predictable is our response. We had a wake-up-call on November 30, 2011 with the 70 MPH winds that did a significant amount of damage in Temple City. Temple City learned many things from that event. Consequently, over 120 citizens are now CERT trained to spring into action if and when a major event strikes again. Last week news channels brought the devastation in Oklahoma right to our living rooms. As I see it, we have three major disaster regions in the United States. Hurricanes on the East Coast, tornados in the Mid-West, and earthquakes on the West Coast. I will be the first to admit that I don’t like earthquakes. It gives me such a helpless
important service and instruction to our community along with County Fire personnel Captain Miguel Garcia and Jose Cortes. Participants along with staff were disaster re-enactors allowing themselves to be rescued, triaged, and treated. Mayor Cynthia Sternquist was on hand thanking the volunteers for their important contribution to our city.

I was told that in this city of taxis that it was required to honk when passing to avoid accidents. I must admit that during the lengthy drives I had there that I did not even see one accident --- and that seemed like a miracle, I went to the Gandhi Museum in Mumbai, a museum dedicated to a man of peace and reconciliation who was assassinated. Not by a Moslem but by a fellow Hindu. Prior to getting my passport to India, I had to fill out a questionnaire. Two of the questions were unique to that of any of the other nations that I went to. The first question was what was my religion and the second question am I reporter. No other country asked me questions like that and I pondered why.

More than 90 residents took advantage of the sunny Spring weather to join the City of El Monte at the 2013 Family Fit Run, Ride and Walk event on Saturday, May 11. The event, hosted by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department in partnership with Bike SGV, was designed to encourage families to get active together at El Monte’s Pioneer Park. The family friendly, non-competitive event was open to all ages and fitness levels. “The City of El Monte makes it a priority to offer activities like the Run, Ride and Walk event that promote a healthy lifestyle for our fami-

A bike rodeo for children under age 8 was hosted by the El Monte Police Officers’ Association. The Run, Ride and Walk event was followed by a healthy lifestyles expo, lunch, and opportunity drawings.

Baker School Fifth Graders Host Harry Potter Inspired Quidditch Tournament
El Monte
– Inspired by the popular Harry Potter books, fifth graders from Baker Elementary School in the
Mountain View School District hosted the school’s First Annual Quidditch Tournament. This school year the fifth graders in Celina Garcia’s class and Lorena Ledesma’s class were excited to read the first book of the Harry Potter Series. To celebrate their admiration for the book, the two classes

participated in a Muggle Quidditch tournament, pitting the four houses of Hogwarts School against each other. Teams included Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Gryffindor and Slytherin and the matches were action packed with the chasers, beaters, snitches and keepers all running around the field to capture the victory. According to Ledesma, in the book the snitch is a flying ball and since they didn’t have a flying ball they used a human snitch who ran around the field trying to escape being captured by the players. “Quidditch is so much fun!” exclaimed Johnny. “I like playing Harry Potter Continued to page 12

FANVIEW By Joe Torosian “All we have is between, hello and goodbye.” ---Graham & Amanda Torii Hunter had a very modest stint with the Angels...Matt Kemp is having a perfectly horrible first two months of 2013 doing his impression of being a human air conditioner (all he does is fan)... But these two guys are what all should really aspire to be when they are in the spotlight. We heard the story earlier this season when Kemp practically handed over his entire game gear to the sick kid up in San Francisco...Then this past week there was a piece on the MLB Network about Hunter playing catch with a kid named “Hunter” who was recovering from leukemia. These guys don’t have to do this but they do...and its wonderful. Years ago Charles Barkley gobbled up a lot of headlines when he said he wasn’t a role model, that parents were the role models. I agree the first role model in any young person’s life should be their parents, but the parents being good or bad does not absolve those in an influential position from living and acting responsibly. Doing the math from the street I grew up on there were two dads. Both were drunks. Overworked moms ran all the households. How many kids were on the street? 23. With no male role models, there were 23 young people, 15 of them were boys. Do you know what a key factor to saving some of us was? And when I say ‘save’ I’m not speaking in the macro, which is Christ, but in the micro which is staying out of jail, going to school, living functional lives... The key factor for those of us who did make it off that street was sports. It wasn’t just playing the game, it was the discipline they showed to their game. It was a media that kept the commentary on what was happening between the lines...not outside of the lines. These athletes weren’t perfect...far from it, but they were role models (by default you might say) for kids that didn’t have any role models. Let me lay something else on you...Do you know, in our neighborhood (and we were far from unique), who else

was held in ultra esteem? It was the local coach and the local star. We knew who the star players were at the other high school...Who the coaches were before we met them. If you get a chance and are on the sidelines this coming fall listen to the kids who are the ball boys. The little dudes that are running around and getting yelled at by everybody...Listen to them talk, and yeah sometimes they’ll be talking about Kobe or LeBron...but this past year I heard them talking about El Monte’s Brandon Martinez... The year before that I heard them talking about Arroyo’s Steven Rivera. We all might not carry the burden of a parent to the kids of the community, but in the limited station we’ve arrived at; Player, coach, teacher, youth pastor, or even sports writer...we owe them our very best. Wanting the best for children will cause them to want something more in this life.
Nice Season For The Lions
El Monte
Although it wasn’t a great ending, the El Monte Lions baseball team this spring had its first winning season since 2007. They also advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in a decade. Head Coach Steven Urena guided his team to a 13-12 record, and a 10-5 second place finish behind Arroyo in the Mission Valley League. In 2012 they went 5-10 in the
MVL, 5-16 overall. Junior lefthander Johnny Alvarez led the team in pitching with and earned run average of 2.77 in 83.1 innings pitched. He struck out 65. Alvarez was complemented on the right side by senior Eddie Ramos, who won five games (5-1), pitched 41 innings, struck out 17 and walked only four. At the plate a pair of juniors led the way. Juan Amaya hit
.439 with a pair of home runs and 17 runs batted it. Third baseman Jacob Moran hit .346 with 14 Rbis. Over half the roster returns for 2014, including freshman Isaiah Morales. Morales made his first varsity appearance on May 1st. and collected an RBI single against Gabrielino. In limited action he went seven of 18 (BA. .389) and five runs batted in.

Do You Know Who This Guy Is?
El Monte
Thirty years ago today, May 29, 1983, 45,332 people went to Chavez Ravine and saw the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4. Max Venable’s tworun single in the top of the ninth off of Dave Stewart gave the visitors the win. On the hill for the first six innings for the Giants was San Gabriel Matador alum (Class of ’70) Mike Krukow. He gave up nine hits, allowed just two runs, and struck out five. He also went two for three at the plate. Krukow was drafted by the California Angels as a catcher out of San Gabriel in 1970 but did not sign. After a successful stint at Cal Poly Pomona he was drafted, as a pitcher, by the Chicago Cubs in the eighth round of the 1973 baseball draft and stayed with
the team through 1981. He made his MLB debut lat in 1976 and finished his career in 1989. In between he won 124 games, lost 117, and enjoyed his best season in 1986 when he went 20-9 for the Giants and finished third
in the National League Cy Young vote. In December of 1981 he was traded by the Cubs to the Philadelphia Phillies for Keith Moreland, Dickie Noles, and Alhambra alum (’72) reliever Dan Larson. One year later he was traded to the Giants in the deal that brought Al Holland and Joe Morgan to the Phillies. Krukow is now a color commentator for the Giants baseball games and lives in San Luis Obispo during the offseason with his family. Note: Homering for the Giants in this game thirty years ago for the Giants was Darrell Evans and Gladstone High School product Jack Clark (that JACK CLARK), who took Dodger reliever Joe Beckwith yard in the fifth.

The Peterson Principle By Tim Peterson
Don Mattingly can't swing the bat. Don Mattingly can't take the mound. Mattingly can't take his old position at first base and Mattingly can't do anything about the wave of injuries that has beset the Dodgers the first two months of the season. Yet despite all that don't be surprised if Mattingly is shown the door before the All-Star break. He was spared being the ax last week he still wasn't given a vote of confidence. He's the manager...for now. He's in charge...as long as things turn around. He's the guy...but we won't be extending his contract. The Dodgers have made that clear. Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier aren't hitting, the bullpen's a mess and other than Clayton Kershaw, the starting pitching is inconsistent. But you can't fire the players and when you're shelling out as much dough as the Dodgers are, somebody's going to pay. How did the Dodgers respond after reports that Mattingly would be gone by Friday night. They lost two out of three to St. Louis including a 5-3 loss on Sunday with Kershaw on the mound. Unfortunately for Donnie Baseball the end is near. Mike Scioscia was seemingly headed towards the same fate when the Angels suddenly turned things around. They have won eight straight and with the Dodgers on the schedule for the next four games it can only get better. If the Angels sweep all four games or even win three of them Mattingly could be gone by the end of the week. Speaking of fired coaches who would have guessed that Vinny Del Negro would be canned before Mike D'Antoni? Del Negro just led the Clippers to the best record in their history. D'Antoni led the Lakers to possibly their most disappointing season in history. Del Negro led the Clips to back to back playoff appearances while D'Antoni's club barely slipped into the playoffs before being embarrassed in the first round. So who gets the boot? Del Negro of course. Do you know that one of the names being mentioned to replace Del Negro is Alvin Gentry? Really? Haven't we seen that act before? Phil Jackson isn't interested and the Van Gundys aren't coming. Byron Scott hasn't had enough success and Lionel Hollins will re-sign in

Memphis. Brian Shaw? As for the Lakers problems bringing Jackson back would be a great start. No, not as head coach but as Team President. I get sick of hearing people say that the Lakers need to separate themselves from Jackson. Why? He's brought them five championships. Okay, maybe he's not interested in working the sidelines but is there anybody else that knows how to run a basketball team better? He knows what works and when he brings in a new coach he can run Jackson's philosophy. Sorry but D'Antoni isn't that guy. I'm not a big San Antonio Spur guy but if you didn't know it before isn't it crystal clear now that Greg Popovich is the best coach in the league? Memphis has the two best big men in the NBA and the Lakers have Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard. The Clippers won 17 straight this year with Blake Griffin and the best point guard in the league with Chris Paul. But when the dust settles it's the Spurs who are the best in the West. Most “experts” had them fifth or sixth coming into the season. Popovich's run as coach should rank among the best ever. I'm still picking Indiana to beat Miami in the East. So with that being said plan on the Heat advancing to the NBA Finals. Did you know that Karah Hernandez hit .450 this season while playing shortstop, second base and centerfield for the Rosemead Lady Panthers? Great stories aren't always reflected in wins and losses. More to come on Karah this week. That's my principle. Tim can be reached at tim@ midvalleysports.com.

Rosemead's Kiwanis Food Bank Drive Successful
Rosemead
This year’s food bank support effort by Rosemead residents and members of the postal letter carriers union was an outstanding success, according to Norene Rand of the People for People Food Bank. 21 large industrial size bins were filled and trucked to the group’s warehouse, representing over 30,000 pounds of canned goods, packaged foods and glass containers. This was double the response to last year’s effort and will help insure adequate non-perishable food for distribution thru the fall.
Kiwanian John Tang helped coordinate the efforts of 16 RHS Key Club members in sorting the donated items at the Rosemead Post office while another 14 RHS Key Club members helped with efforts in Los Angeles. According to John everything went smoothly although the effort took two hours longer than anticipated due to late arrivals and the sheer volume. Norene and her staff of volunteers are grateful to all involved for their efforts. .
