Mountain View High School Teacher Presents at AVID National Conference El Monte

Celebrating Father’s Day

Temple City

History tells us that the Father’s day “campaign to celebrate the nation’s fathers did not meet with the same enthusiasm” as celebrating mothers. On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event honoring fathers, “a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah.” However, it was only celebrated once. Then, in 1909, a woman from Spokane, Washington by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd

performance. Lewis was one of 48 selected to present from over 100 applicants. "More than 2,000 national attendees including superintendents, school board members, district and site administrators and other educational leaders discussed and shared best practices on opening access to rigorous curriculum for all students," said an Mt. tried to establish a day to honor fathers. She was successful, but the sources vary as to the first Father’s Day celebrated. According to Ellen Jackson, “Father’s Day was first observed on June 13, 1910 in Spokane, Washington.” But the website www.History.com says “Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on July 19, 1910.” In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson “honored the day by using telegraph signals to unhurl a flag in Spokane.” In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge

“urged state governments to observe Father’s Day.” But, many men did not favor this idea. Some felt it wasn’t “manly” or another attempt “to commercialize a day to sell more products that the father often ended up paying for himself.” Throughout the 1920’s and 1930’s there was a movement to do away with both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. An activist and radio performer, Robert Spere wanted to have a “Parent’s Day.” But the Great Depression came and the idea lost ground. Retailers rallied in support of Father’s Day to get people to shop for gifts. Then, when WWII began, advertisers pushed Father’s Day as “a way to honor American troops and support the war effort. By the end of the war, Father’s Day may not have been a federal holiday, but it was a national institution.” Then, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson made Father’s Day a national holiday. Finally, “in 1972 President Richard Nixon signed

a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday at last.” In our own neighborhood, we honor on this Father’s Day, Francis (Bud) Keefe. He was born in Minnesota and joined the Navy during WWII, settling in California. That is where he met the love of his life, Renee Windsor. They were married on September 16, 1944. They moved to Temple City in the early 1950’s. The family started off in a small house on Hart Street that Bud built and then moved to a two story house, where he finished the entire upstairs. Versatile doesn’t even begin to describe Bud’s numerous talents! Bud and Renee had 7 children: Larry, Kevin, Ann Marie, Karen, Brian, Elaine, and Carol. He has 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Bud and Renee were happily married for 64 ½ years. Sadly, Renee Father's Day continued to page 4

Around Town by Mavis Hansen Here we are, once again having the most beautiful weather, warm, but not too hot, cool and not too cold and breezy enough to fly our flags. A reminder that Friday, June 14 will be Flag Day and we should all fly our Flags proudly. Another reminder, and I hope that not too many of you needed one, but Sunday, June 16, 2013 will be Father’s Day. A once a year special day in which to show Dad how much he means to us by making sure that Dad, Pop, Father, papa or whatever you call your father, has extra special treatment to make him happy. That could be a fishing trip, golf game, tickets to his favorite show or sports or just letting him watch T V all day (with great snacks, of course) or maybe just a long nap. And of course, do not forget the food! This is the day Dad should have his favorites, from breakfast to dinner and late night snack! So to all the men out there, who are deserving of the title: HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! A Father’s Day Luncheon and Dance will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the Jack Crippen Senior Center, 3120 N. Student's Corner "Finding Your Passion in Life"

Tyler Anderson, contributing student writer from San Gabriel Mission High School. by Tyler Anderson

During my teen years, I have learned that at this stage in life, we are supposed to learn who we want to be as we approach adulthood. We figure out our strengths, weaknesses and our passions. In my journey, I have discovered that my passion is Mixed Martial Arts. For the past seven months, I have been training in kickboxing

and jujitsu and I am loving it! From the very first class, I knew it was for me. Kickboxing and jujitsu are far more than hobbies to me, but if you are just looking for a workout, I highly suggest it! Kickboxing works out your arms, legs and abs. It also helps you blow off that extra steam from a rough day. Jujitsu works out vari-

ous parts of your body and you hardly even notice. Well, until you are sore the next day! It is an intense workout that will boost your confidence in your self-defense abilities. The moral of the story is to find something you love and after that you’ll find yourself.

passed away in 2009. Bud suffered another loss in 2011 when his son, Kevin, passed away unexpectedly. Currently, Bud enjoys retirement and keeps busy with his family, especially all of his grandchildren. He is fondly referred to as “GGP, great-grand pa” by his family. According to Bud, he doesn’t expect gifts for Father’s Day. “It is a time to reflect on your past and your family and think about your kids.” Another local dad we honor on this Father’s Day is Anthony (Tony) Farinella. He was born in Mattapan, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. He moved to California in 1954. He met his wife Sally in 1965 and they have been married for 46 years. Tony and Sally moved to El Monte in 1967. They have 4 children, Teri, Geri, Christopher, and Danny and 9 grandchildren. Tony served in the Army

for 18 years, 4 years in the Coast Guard, and 16 years in the California State Military Reserves. According to Tony, the best way to explain how he feels about Father’s Day “is to break down the word. F is for faithfully supporting the family, especially the mother; A is for a loving dad and just as important, a loving husband; T takes the time to spend time with the kids and their mother; H is for the hugs which are plentiful; E is every time you need him, he is there; R is for the times that he rushes home to be with the kids and their mother.” Another local dad we honor on this Father’s Day is Frank photo courteous from Tony and Sally Farinella

Buccola. He was born in El Moro, Colorado. He moved to California in 1945. He met his wife and best friend Pat in 1947. They will be married 65 years this June! They have lived in Temple City since 1954. Frank and Pat have 4 children: Linda, Kathy, Mary, and Frankie. They have 6 grandchildren and 1 great- grandchild. Father’s Day for Frank is a time to think about his dad. One of his greatest gifts is having the love and respect of his children. Frank is proud of all of his children and grandchildren, especially Cassian, who will be ordained into the Benedictine Order of the priesthood on July 20th. Frank says he is “a happy father” and only hopes other fathers share that same happiness. Frank and Pat remain active at St. Luke’s Parish in Temple City. Every Father’s Day I remember my dad, Sam Jeffre. He passed away in 2004, but he is with me every day. All of the things he taught me have influenced and molded me into the person I am today. I will be forever grateful for his love and support. What better way to celebrate Father’s Day, than to honor all of the special dads in your life. So to all fathers, HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

The conference featured a variety of topics including 21st Century Skills and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) initiatives, acceleration and rigor, AVID's College Readiness System, Common Core State Standards, Data, Research and Evaluation for College Readiness and Equity. Lewis’ session focused on demystifying research writing in the AVID elective. "In the presentation, I discussed some strategies that AVID teachers can use to approach research writing a

little differently," said Lewis. "My focus is on developing purpose for writing and organizing thinking to write higher quality essays." Today, AVID is implemented in approximately 4,800 schools in 48 states and 16 countries/ territories and serves more than 425,000 students in grades 4-12, as well as students in 24 higher education institutions. I wouldn't trade them for any other; A lot of joy they give to me and their mother. Love and happiness is what they bring; and often they make me feel just like a king. They all three knew about God at the start; And live knowing that Jesus is in their heart. They are so thoughtful, considerate and kind; I'm so grateful to be able to call them mine.

“Well holy moly me oh my You’re the apple of my eye Girl I've never loved one like you.” --- Edward Sharpe

Yeah, I know the Heat rolled on Sunday night but they did it without LeBron James. James got fat after the game was decided. The blocked shot was nice though. Again, I never had a problem with the way he left Cleveland. My only beef, repeated like a broken record, is him being declared among the greatest of all time without really achieving anything great. He’s got so much talent, so much ability, but he is always so underwhelming... Yasiel Puig is the best thing out of Cuba since Desi Arnaz... I thought it was a good year for the Kings all things considered...All things being its hockey, we’re in California and the games are way overpriced... Last Add LeBron: If only the IRS was as underwhelming as LeBron...Now that would be a tax system I

could live with. Home runs, pennant chases, great pitching...and all the sabermetric people can come up with is: “Don’t bunt!” Does anyone remember former Jacksonville Jaguar receiver Mike Sims Walker? You probably don’t, because I was the only dork that invested in him for my fantasy team. Note to Dodger Fans: If Puig goes into a slump, blame me. I signed him to my fantasy team. Generally anyone I sign, in any sport, goes into an immediate tail spin when they get on one of my fantasy rosters. I really enjoyed watching Mt. View throw the ball on Thursday...Now don’t get crazy, I’m not predicting anything or saying they are going to make a run. I just liked the way they went out on the field against bigger stronger teams like Downey, Bigflower, and Schurr. I said trade Andre Ethier a

Rosemead QB Steven Nava

San Dimas, Azusa and Rosemead traveled to B.L. Bergstrom Stadium last Tuesday to participate in a fourway through with the Arroyo Knights as the summer passing season has opened up. ...Even with many schools still session. What is accomplished dur-

ing these tosses. Small things, mostly its an opportunity to see new faces in familar places and just the opposite. Former San Gabriel running back Joseph Mayorga was out in his new San Dimas gear. We got a better look at Rosemead quarterback Steven Nava.

A glimpse at Arroyo running back Gabriel Gomez who seeks to pick up the carries left behind by the graduating Peter Aholoka. And we saw former Temple City player, assistant, and San Gabriel assistant Matt “Suave One” Lopez coaching for the Saints.

The Peterson Principle By Tim Peterson

The Yasiel Puig story is great. In fact it's amazing. But the bottom line is it might not go very far in rescuing the Dodgers. This guy needs some help. Puig hit four home runs in his first five games and had three more hits on Sunday but after seven games since Puig was called up the Dodgers are...drum roll please...4-3. They won two of three from San Diego but after splitting four with Atlanta they are a very mediocre one game over .500 since the days of Puig. That's not going to cut it. Puig is hitting but nobody else is. Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford are out and Andre Ethier might as well be. Hanley Ramirez is suddenly injury prone and the pitching continues to be a disaster. I know Don Mattingly is trying to plug in holes on a staff that has been banged up but please, isn't there anybody...anybody...better than Matt Magill? After getting shelled on Sunday his ERA is 6.51. He has more walks (28) than strikeouts (26) while allowing six home runs. We're really supposed to buy Mattingly's assertion that Magill is the best guy available when he runs him out there every fifth day? It doesn't matter how many Puigs you have, it won't make a difference with Magill on the hill. This guy needs to be on the next flight to Albuquerque. People are comparing Puig's remarkable start to Mike Trout and his debut for the Angels last year. It's a good comparison but remember where the Angels finished last year? Speaking of the Angels, I guess it could be worse for the Dodgers. They could be the Angels. Albert Pujols needs to sit down. Put him on the 15 day DL. Two weeks without him in the lineup isn't going to matter. It hurts just to watch him play. It didn't hurt to watch Rosemead's Steven San Miguel play this year. In fact San Miguel just completed what may have been the most prolific athletic prep career in Rosemead High School history. He was named the team MVP in football, basketball and baseball. In baseball he batted .466 and in football he was named a National Football Foundation scholar athlete award winner. He was named Athlete of the Year for Rosemead, made All League in all three sports and was also team captain on all three. Often there is an athlete who excels in one specific sport but

it's rare to see somebody excel in all three like San Miguel has over a four year period. San Miguel has a bright future in front of him. Drove down the 605 twice this week. I saw four schools throwing at Bellflower on Thursday and checked out the 605 All-Star game on Friday night. Jorge Reyna is back at at quarterback for Downey and that alone puts the Vikings in the hunt. Junior running back Justin Huff returns as well giving Downey maybe the best one-two punch in the area. “We lost some leadership, that's for sure,” said Downey HC Jack Williams. “We have a lot of our studs back (Reyna, Huff, etc.) but we definitely lost some guys that were in leadership roles.” Keep an eye on Downey linebacker Chris Tuiasosopo. “He's a big kid and tough and he's only a sophomore. I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley,” Williams said. Southpaw Sal Chavez is looking good for Schurr. Swain Williams returns at quarterback for Bellflower but will be facing some competition this year from Sebastian Sanchez according to Buccaneer HC Derek Brown. Both players are seniors. The 605 game dragged for three and a half quarters but the East rally late in the fourth and into overtime made it worth the drive. It was nearly 10:45 when a West pass fell to the turf and touched off an East victory celebration in the second overtime. When I saw the kids sprinting on to the field and leaping on each other in jubilation it reminded me of one thing. Football season has definitely arrived. That's my principle. Tim can be reached at tim@ midvalleysports.com.

Mountain View Goes to Bellflower

Bellflower

The Mountain View Vikings traveled down the 605 Thursday and engaged in a four-way toss with Bellflower, Downey, and Schurr. The Vikes were undermanned against the Southeast powerhouses and a physical Schurr team, but they competed. “We have a lot of guys out today,” said second year HC Victor Ambruso. “Lot of stuff

going on down at school, that’s our third string quarterback.” The third string quarterback flinging the ball fearlessly was Steven Barrers. Rumors of Ambruso scrapping the double-wing have proved to be untrue. “We’re going to run some stuff out of shotgun, but we’re stilling going to be a wing team,” he said.

month ago...and now “smart” baseball people are saying he would be a good fit for the Mets...If the Mets are still the New York team that enjoys taking on bloated contracts of players past their prime then, yes, Andre Ethier would be a good fit. I wonder whatever happened to Justin Sellers? Do you think the Angels still wish they had Ervin Santana? Expect a local coaching change, another one, very very soon. How tolerant am I? Well I wouldn’t let Miami Heat forward Birdman Andersen through my front door, date my daughter, or hirer him to cover football for us in the fall...But I would make sure he got big minutes along the front line of my basketball team. Dude, does a good job. Contact Joe at joe@midvalleysports.com
