A Unique Graduation Gift, The Physical Presence of a Top Educator

The 2013 Special Fours' Class at Rio Hondo Elementary School was given a very special treat when Mr. Nick Salerno, the very personable Superintendent of the El Monte Union High School District attended their graduation. He informed the admiring "about-to-be" graduates and their attending family members and friends that he was delighted to be present "here at Rio Hondo El-

that they have completed this beginning phase of their education. He congratulated their dedicated, caring family members for their concern for their little ones'

education. The Special Fours' Program is unique: adult family members attend each class and help guide the children in learning

basic literacy skills, math concepts, and acquisition of spatial concepts. The children learn to share with others and fine tune their gross and fine motor skills. El Monte Union High School District has offered Parent Education classes since 1932, which have helped so many children and their families to learn how to learn and to become lifelong learners. Before leaving, Mr. Salerno offered his heartfelt thank you's to the Special Fours Teachers, Ms. Jeanie and Ms. Sandra; and to their Teaching Assistants, Ms. Sandra and Ms. Irma for "all you do for these little children, our future under development right before our very eyes." All in all, it was an especially memorable day for all to be cherished ever after.

Podiatrist Responds to Community Needs with Shoe Drive

El Monte

In the last three years Dr. Michele Summers Colon has received over 3,000 pairs of shoes, which she has donated to various community organizations, including Souls 4 Soles, a local and global program which helps to get shoes to survivors of the recent Los Angeles County fires and the Oklahoma tornado disaster. Soles 4 Souls, based in Nashville, has partnered with Dr. Colon to be a drop-off location making it easy for the San Gabriel Valley to donate shoes, and help those in need. “Souls 4 Soles has helped millions of people around the world, and in LA County,” said El Monte podiatry practice owner, Dr. Colon. “I fully believe in their cause.”

In 2011, Souls 4 Soles set a goal to collect 11 million pairs of shoes, and they

exceeded their goal with 13 million pairs of shoes. Along with collecting shoes at their distribution center in City of Industry, whenever there’s a natural disaster shoes get sent to that specific area, but when there’s not a natural disaster the shoes gets distributed all over the world. “Our El Monte podiatry office is getting

ready for a summer shoe donation drive,” said Dr. Colon. “We expect to collect more than 1,500 pairs by teaming up with the local Girl Scouts, and we are inviting the community to donate shoes or provide monetary sponsorship for the one dollar equals one pair of shoes program.” The participating Girl Scout troop will be able to earn a badge for getting involved in the community service effort. Once the shoes have been bound up in pairs and boxed they will be separated by category, and sent to areas that are in the most need of shoes. As a practicing podiatrist for the last 15 years, Dr. Colon, age 44, got her start in shoe donation programs that benefited homeless veterans Shoe Drive continued to page 10

America the Great

Ashley Lanuza, contributing student writer from San Gabriel Mission High School. by Ashley Lanuza

When was the last time you were grateful for your country? The idea of freedom was what founded America all those years ago, and this concept brings us to where we are today. Although a few of our freedoms may be in danger of becoming censored, we should currently focus on what we have right now. We have amazing rights that we take for granted, such as that of speech and religion. Unfortunately, many of our neighboring countries have been forced to endure extreme suffering in the past. One such case is of a survivor of one of

the most terrible events, Andy, who fortunately survived the madness forced upon him. He shared his journey of relentless hope with a young school crowd. Born in Hungary, Andy escaped from the terror of the Holocaust as soon as he could. When he and the people who accompanied him got to the United States, the first thing they saw was the Statute of Liberty. As the people came closer, Andy described the scene as, “That woman holding the torch made those people cry. You see, they cherished it…It has it so we can choose what we

want to be, and what schools we go to. You have teachers who WANT to teach you no matter your religion or race.” Our country has been trying for decades to perfect its tolerance and safety, and we are still at work on it. But for now, as you freely speak, believe, or assemble, remember that there is no other country like the one we live in. As Andy finished his talk, he said, “I’ll tell ya, you Americans take that statue for granted. You should cherish this land because it’s given you all that you have. It’s your greatest gift.”

Temple City

Fireworks: Fundraiser vs. Safety?

Temple City is one of only a few cities in the surrounding areas that allows the selling and use of fireworks. But maybe it’s time to reconsider this decision. Besides being a longtime tradition to light fireworks for the 4th of July, the selling of fireworks in Temple City seems to be primarily used by organizations as a fundraising event. However, considering the continued water shortage, the close proximity of dwellings and the recent Recent fires, shouldn’t the selling of fireworks be banned? There are alternatives. Why not have firework displays in a safe controlled environment and charge admission? Any local school with a large field could host a fireworks display conducted by professionals. Temple City High School or Live Oak Park would be great places to host a fireworks display and local organizations could pool their funds and split the profits. There are many safe ways to raise funds for organizations like carnivals, bake sales,

by Jo Anne Disney

dances, BBQ’s and raffles just to name a few. Groups can even attend local TV show tapings and get paid. Each year local firefighters express their apprehensions over the dangers of fireworks. I found out that July 4th is their busiest day of the year.

They too, are concerned about this July 4th especially with the water shortage and the dry conditions that prevail around the cities. Every year there are substantial amounts of illegal fireworks being used in our city. Not only are they shot into the sky, but the sounds can be deafening. The debris is found every July 5th on

rooftops, in streets as well as in both front and back yards. I have lived in Temple City all of my life and see it every year. So to protect our homes, some of my neighbors and I stay at home every July 4th. So until something changes, please be extra cautious this year with fireworks. Parents supervise the use of fireworks not only to protect your children, but residences as well. Know where your children are and what they are doing! And, remember to be very careful when lighting fireworks in the streets. Vehicles are still in operation on July 4th. I enjoy fireworks very much, but times have changed. Fewer open spaces and potential fire dangers as well as environmental issues, suggest it’s time we come up with alternative ways to celebrate a safe July 4th. Isn’t it time a little common sense be exercised in our city? Fundraising is great, but shouldn’t safety come first?

Jerry’s Journeys

July 4th Pet Safety Tips

by Jerry Jambazian

How have you been holding up under this heat? We have been reaching triple digit temps for a few days now. If you feel like you are not getting enough heat you are welcome to spend a few hours at my cleaners with 105 pounds of steam pressure. Usually we don’t get this weather in June so dress lightly and drink plenty of water. I don’t know if El Monte has any cooling centers but Temple City has designated either the Council Chambers or Live Oak Park as the place to be during extreme heat conditions. I would like to use my remaining space to share a letter in part that I presented to the Temple City Council on July 17, 2012: “I have a message for all the people that have absolutely no sense whatsoever - especially regarding the animals and the children they scare with their use of illegal fireworks that they light off on every Fourth of July.

The cities in which we all live do their best (at no cost to the general public) which is rare these days, of displaying controlled safe fireworks for everyone to enjoy.

But still, what happens

on July 4 shows that the rest of you have no regard for the safety of the rest of us. These people just continue to set off loud, exploding bombs that put people on edge past midnight every Fourth of July.

If these people's goal is to make the rest of us feel what it is like living in a war zone, they've made their point!

I take it that you have never been in a war zone like our veterans that have gone off to war. If you had, I don't think you would be lighting off all those unwanted firework "bombs." In some cases it brings back terrible memories from many decades ago. Fireworks add a colorful and fun spark to many Fourth of July celebrations. They’re a source of joy and awe for the young and old, alike. And while many Independence Day fireworks are enjoyed without incident, every year, thousands of people are injured in fireworks accidents—some are even killed. That’s why it’s important to remember that fireworks are explosive devices that can cause injury if mishandled. It’s also important to know that no matter how carefully

some fireworks are handled, injuries can still be caused by defective fireworks. I personally know of people who make a pilgrimage to Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada to purchase illegal fireworks to be discharged in our city. These are the fireworks that not only produce a loud noise, but also a concussion. I might also all that they scar the streets and folks leave all their debris in the street. Temple City has a long history of allowing the sale of fireworks dating back to before incorporation. At the July 19, 1988 regular City Council meeting there were many concerns from residents concerning fireworks. There was a 3-2 vote to put the sale of fireworks in Temple City on the November ballot. With 12,077 ballots cast regarding Proposition PP. Yes votes totaled 5,937 and no votes totaled 6,140. The measure to not allow the sale of fireworks was defeated by 203 votes. County Mayor Michael D. Antonovich reminds residents preparing to celebrate the Fourth of July that fireworks of any kind are illegal in Los Angeles County. Jerry's Journeys continued to page 7

The Fourth of July is one of the most stressful and potentially dangerous times of the year for pets. While you and your family, friends, and neighbors are celebrating the holiday with fireworks, pets are finding these festive activities anything but celebratory. Many pet parents assume that if their pet is not afraid of thunder or other loud noises, they will not be bothered by fireworks. This is not necessarily true. Even pets who normally are not bothered by thunder and other loud noises are often frightened and panicked by the cumulative effects of the fireworks, the excited voices outside, and being left alone inside the house. If pets are left outside and unattended, the noise and raucous often drives them to run away. In fact, the July 4th holiday is a very busy time for animal shelters across the U.S. They report taking in a higher number dogs that run off during firework festivities. In addition, many police stations log higher volumes of stray dog calls and barking complaints on July 4th compared to any other day of the year. By planning ahead and taking some common sense precautions, you can help ensure your pet is happy and safe this Fourth of July. • Do not take your pet to fireworks displays. • Do not leave your pet alone in the car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects even death in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air, but they do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen. See our previous post: Leaving Pets In Parked Car Can Be A Deadly Mistake. However, if your pet is most comfortable in the car, some pet parents find that driving around with their pet in the car helps to calm their pet. • Keep your pets in your home in a comfortable and quiet area with the shades drawn. If your pet is crate trained, then their crate is a great choice. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be

by Sherry Burdic

sure that you've removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep your pet company while you're attending Fourth of July picnics, parades, and other celebrations. • If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays. • If your pet seeks comfort in a bath tub, under a bed or other small space... let them. Do not try to lure them out. If the space is safe and it makes them feel more secure, let them be. • Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death. • Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners. Summer is Coming to the City of Rosemead

Rosemead

Holiday Events …. Independence Day will be celebrated by the cities of San Gabriel and Rosemead with parades and festivities. San Gabriel, celebrating its 100th anniversary will celebrate with a Kid Day parade and picnic. The parade will start at 9:30 in the historic Mission District. The City Picnic will follow at Smith Park with the event scheduled to last until 1PM. The City of Rosemead hosts a city-wide parade starting at 9AM and proceeding east along Valley Boulevard. The parade is certain to entertain you with bands, dancers, antique cars and honored guests. Afterwards, Rosemead Park will provide activities for holiday fun seekers with booths, food and music. Fireworks are scheduled to start later in the evening at Rosemead Park. There is always a lot going on at the park on the 4th of July. Come on out and enjoy one or both of these events at your local city venue. … Good Move … The ACE Trench Project which will lower the railroad tracks in San Gabriel unearthed more than 50,000 findings so far in the project. One of the more interesting finds was a Millrace used at Chapman’s Mill in the early 1800’s. It was recently unearthed, extracted and moved from its resting place for the past 150 plus years to its new home at Centennial Park across from San Gabriel City Hall. The Millrace was used to control and distribute the flow of water to the Mill. Its smooth trench channel with rock and adobe mortar was dug up and transported to its new home on Friday June 21st. Gabrieleno labor was more than likely used to construct the Millrace with Joseph Chapman performing the engineering of the construction. The addition fits well in historic San Gabriel and its official unveiling should take place sometime this summer…. Hot Days ….. June just ended and it’s already a scorcher of a summer season with temperatures exceeding 95 degrees. One way to keep cool is to make use of local community pools. Smith Park Pool located at 232 W. Broadway in San Gabriel will be open from 1 – 3:30 PM for recreational use. The fee is no more than $2.00 for all ages

and swimming lessons are offered for all age and experience groups. The experience levels are named after sea life starting with Tadpoles and progressing through Dolphins and Orcas. Contact the City of San Gabriel Parks and Recreation for more information including registration at 626308-2875…

Kiwanis Honors Emperor Elementary School Students

Temple City

The Kiwanis Club of Temple City recognized three outstanding students from Emperor Elementary School. Accompanying the students was Emperor Principal Ms. Kathy Perini. Abigayle is 12 years old and in Mr. Giangregorio’s class. She has a younger brother and enjoys drawing, playing the piano, singing, and animating. Abigayle said, “The best things about Emperor are the wonderful Principal Ms. Perini, the teachers are always glad to give you extra help, and the parents are very involved so we have lots of volunteers.” The best thing that ever happened was discovering a whole new version of art on her DSI. Personal goals are to stop poaching, animal abuse, hunger, build a sanctuary for cats, improve her math grades, become a veterinarian, stop procrastinating, and improve her health. Justin is 12 years old and in Miss Parrille’s class. He has an older sister and enjoys basketball, outdoor play, and sports. Justin said, “The best things about Emperor are the

“While some cities allow “safe and sane” fireworks, fireworks, of any kind, are illegal in Los Angeles County,” said Antonovich. The penalties for possession or use of illegal fireworks can range from a fine of up to $1000, to one year in county jail. “With fire season upon us, it is vital that our County residents understand that fireworks can cause brush fires, house fires, millions of dollars in damages, injuries and even death,” said Antonovich. “Our firefighters risk their lives protecting lives and property — they deserve our help in preventing further fire emergencies.” Certain products like m-80′s and m-100′s are considered explosives and are a felony to possess with penalties as high as 16 months in state prison. Parents are also liable for any damage or injuries caused by their children using fireworks. I realize that many of the youth groups derive their income from the fireworks booth. I also realize that it is a select few that diligently work the booth for the benefit of parents who cannot or will not. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but there may be other creative ways of generating income for these groups. Pumpkin Patch, Christmas

Monrovia Pushes Reset Button

On Friday Arroyo knocked off Monrovia at the Bonita Air Assault tournament. Which is interesting in the conext that the Knights had to scrap their way to a narrow second round loss to 2012 state champion Sierra Canyon last fall. While the Wildcats are back to back to back Mid-Valley Division champions. There are no worries, but a lot of new faces. Gone is quarterback Blake Heyworth, linebackers Brett Walsh and George Frazier Jr. Wide receiver Mason Bryant to the long walk to graduation along with Geovontray Ainsworth.

Instead of panicking, M-Town HC Ryan Maddox just pushes the reset as he enters his sixth season leading the program. In a nutshell Maddox has won three titles, been to four finals games, five semifinals, and has never lost a Rio Hondo League game. The Wildcats open the 2013 season on September 6 at home against Ayala, then go to Arcadia, before coming back home to host San Dimas, South Hills, and St. Francis on successive weeks. League play starts at Temple City in October. New quarterback DeShawn Potts only completed three of five passes as a junior but two of them

roster in 2012. Of the 78 touchdowns scored in its drive to a third consecutive title, only 24 of them return.

San Gabriel’s Former Quarterback Valenzuela Lands at Keppel Former San Gabriel quarterback Marcus Valenzuela, who checked out of SG at the end of the school year, is now at Mark Keppel and playing quarterback for the Aztecs. Valenzuela, as a junior for

the Matadors in 2012, threw for 3,190 yards and 21 touchdowns. Now at Keppel, he becomes the team’s best threat at quarterback since southpaw Evan Bachman in 2008 and 2009.

The NBA has a problem...It’s called the NBA Draft. Talk about a yawning festival... Even in basketball crazy Indiana, no one cared about he NBA Draft... If someone wanted to hear my advice, take my advice, and actually implement my advice it would be this: If you are going to make another “Superman” movie, contract Yasiel Puig. Love the National League West... Because only in the National League West can you be five games under .500 and only four games out of first place. Next Add Dodgers: It’s great to look at the Dodger bench and see a player with a bat like Scott Van Slyke there waiting to take his cuts. Hallelujah! Luis Cruz and Justin Sellers are playing in a cornfield somewhere. If you have to hit a Triple A Stadium any time soon, “Victory Field” in Indianapolis is gorgeous. After watching Rochester take down Indianapolis last Wednesday, I understood why I don’t see many minor league games. The reason I don’t see too many minor league games is because we are surrounded by Single A teams,..not entertaining. Triple A on the other hand was a pleasure. Rob Bell is a reaaal Munson... Remember when Jeff Francoeur was something special? Dwight Howard needs the Los Angeles Lakers more than the Los Angeles Lakers need Dwight Howard...It might be rough for a season or two, but they will go on. Howard on the other hand, is one decision away from becoming just another guy. Interesting Yahoo article lists 27 NFL players as being arrested since the Super Bowl... Last Add Dodgers: Who gave Brandon League that big contract? Have you noticed that Arroyo football is having a heck of a spring and summer? It will be interesting to see what Keppel does this football season. The Los Angeles Angels are only four games under .500 but nine games out of first place in the American League West. Do you realize the life you live here in the United States is possible because of an event that took place 150 years ago today? The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia thought it could break the Union lines in the center on the third day of fighting at Gettysburg. So Robert E. Lee sent the heart of his army (13 to 15 thousand men) charging out of the woods toward a victory he thought would end the war. They made it to the wall, but the Union lines held...and the South never again was on the offensive. Think about that...I don’t believe in accidents. Contact Joe at joe@midvalleysports.com

The Peterson Principle By Tim Peterson

Is there ever a day in late June or early July that somebody isn't throwing the ball somewhere? I'm sure if you looked hard enough you could find a passing competition every day of the week. I hit the road this past week to check out three in three different days and I was told I missed several other “good” ones. It reminded me of when we used to cover Little League back in the day and after covering a game at Pioneer Park everybody would ask me why I wasn't at Lambert. If I went to Live Oak I was asked why I wasn't at Milham. It is what it is but always remember this: If you send me a few names, a picture and a brief description of what took place on the field it will get posted – guaranteed. Anyway on Tuesday I went to Maranatha and a scoop broke out. It turns out Keppel was there and a certain former San Gabriel quarterback named Marqus Valenzuela was throwing the ball for the Aztecs. I did a double take and then had to confirm that it was actually him. It was indeed. I had heard Monrovia, West Covina and even Salesian but never Keppel. I never imagined Keppel. Good for him. If nothing else it proves that Valenzuela's move wasn't athletically motivated. He's just a kid that wants to play ball and due to circumstances at San Gabriel with the faculty it wasn't working out. Keppel is working out and although they may not be on anybody's radar they do have a football team and welcomed Valenzuela with open arms. Did you know that Valenzuela carries a 3.8 GPA? He's a kid that's going to doing something other than playing football after high school. But right now he wants to play and SG wasn't the right fit. Good for him. I hope it works out. Does this mean Keppel has an immediate ticket to the post season? No, of course not. But in a down Almont League the Aztecs could win a couple games and maybe surprise somebody. There did seem to be an energy that I hadn't sen before. At least on Tuesday

there was. First year Maranatha Coach Jude Oliva is excited about Pasadena junior transfer Caleb Devine. “Yeah he's going to be a good one. Just wait and see,” Oliva said. “He's a beast. I mean, just look at him, he's a beast!” said San Gabriel assistant Cedric Ho. Devine, 6-0, 185, is listed as a LB/TE and RB but when I asked Ho where he would be playing he replied “everywhere”. Thursday I was at Arroyo, (I know, it seems like I'm always at Arroyo but I know they're throwing every Tuesday and Thursday and there are always different teams.) Anyway I got a good look at Temple City quarterback Nasir Banihani. He threw the ball pretty well and will get his shots in the TC system. But when all else fails expect the Rams to pound it with the Nicks-Kaneko and Starling. I was surprised at the heat Baldwin Park was taking on our boards because one of their players was wearing earrings. Really? There's a lack of discipline by the coaching staff because a kid was wearing earrings? If had a nickel for every kid I saw wearing earrings at a passing league...well I wouldn't be covering passing leagues for Mid Valley Sports. Well actually I probably would...I'd just quit my other job. After checking out the Air Assault at Bonita over the weekend and hearing the reports from coaches I realize why passing leagues are important. We've all heard the arguments for and against. While one argument says that 7 on 7 in shirts and shorts doesn't matter another argument is it helps the skill position guys work on their timing. The thing though is this. Whether you like passing leagues or not It makes the players involved that much tougher. I mean If you can play five games in one day in 100 degree heat against top notch teams, how tough will it be to play one game against a league opponent on a cool Friday night in October? That's my principle.

WEBB'S RULES FOURTH OF JULY A birthday is always a very special day; That we personally celebrate in our own way. Fourth of July is the birthday of our nation; We get together with our friends and relation. So Fourth of July is a special day in the year; It's a big celebration with a lot of cheer. It's a time that brings everyone together; And in California it's usually nice weather. On July 4, 1776 was born the good old USA; We never want to forget our freedom day. In Philadelphia is where it did begin; Declaration of Independence was signed by men. These men with courage set our country free; And that's the way we want it to always be. So the American flag will be flying high; That's what is expected on Fourth of July. Even the little kids stay up late that night; Seeing the fireworks in the sky so bright. When those beautiful colors light up the sky; Then you just know it has to be Fourth of July.

With Peruvian family roots she decided she wanted to give back to the under-served community. Along with being the only San Gabriel Valley podiatrist in the Souls 4 Soles drop-off campaign she also participates in the El Monte Rotary “Happy Feet” program providing shoes to children in the local school district. “My goal in the community is to serve people, and help them feel a pain free life when it comes to their feet,” said Dr. Colon. “I want my podiatry practice to give people in the community the best and safest options to treat their feet.” More information can be found at http:// www.elmontefootdoctor. com/, the podiatry practice Twitter handle: @socalfootdoc, and on Facebook. com/drmichelesummerscolondpm.
