Lawrence Stevens is an ordinary guy who experienced extraordinary life experiences and lived to tell about them. With the help of his granddaughter, Stacey, his story is now available for everyone to read in his book entitled, “It Only Takes One, Memoirs of a Tail Gunner.” Larry was born in his parent’s home in Alhambra in 1924. trees. Larry said that “Atlantic Boulevard was first called “Wilson Boulevard” because it was the road leading to the Mt. Wilson Observatory. Growing up, Larry had 4 siblings, Ernie, Mayme, Jim and Mary Lou. He worked with his dad who was a plaster contractor. As a young boy, Larry helped his dad plaster Holy Angels
Church in Arcadia. When all of his high school friends were being drafted during WWII, Larry enlisted in the army and graduated early
from Alhambra High. He reported for duty on May 10, 1943. He graduated from gunnery school at age 19 becoming part of the Army Air Corps. Tragically his older brother, Ernie, who had been in the army since 1941, was killed in action “spear-heading an infantry drive in Messina, Italy” in November 1943. Larry and the crew of the “Full House,” the name of his plane, flew 34 successful missions. Then, the “Full House” with a new crew was shot down photo by Jo Anne Disney
in Zeitz, Germany. Larry’s 35th mission was in a new plane called “Big Chief Illiniwek” which was a new B-17 G plane and its first mission. Larry said they were headed to Politz, Austria. Over Germany one of the engines malfunctioned and “for the first time on our tour, we had to abort.” According to Larry, “When our crew was in combat, there was a 1 in 5 or 20 in 100 chance of survival and a 50-50 chance after the 15th mission.” Larry was one of the lucky ones and as he said, “Our guardian angel road with us all the way.” Many articles have been written about Larry. He was a highly decorated member of the 412th Bombardment Squadron and the 95th Bombardment Group. At the age of 20, Sgt. Larry Memories continued to page 6

The morning after the 4th of July holiday was quite eventful for the staff here at Mid Valley News. After an order from the El Monte Police Department to evacuate the building, employees from all offices soon found out that a suspect considered armed and dangerous was hiding in the Masterson Building, on the corner of Valley Boulevard

The Earth is part of the Milky Way Galaxy, one galaxy among many others. Each galaxy is a conglomeration of stars, full of unknown systems, moons, planets, and objects that are entirely different. It just so happens that we can only know the extent of our own solar system and we haven’t even come to grasp its enormity. The visible lights in the sky seem to pale in comparison to the planets, asteroids, and galaxies consisting of more than one hundred billion stars. Take into account how small and minor our lives actually are as we live on this terrain. It is this thought

that probably brought many important historical figures to become who we read about in textbooks or articles. Our lives are truly passing us by if we don’t do anything to restore the planet or to bring happiness to millions of people. Why wither away and be forgotten? Live to be remembered for millions of years. We are mere ants compared to the unknown lands of Mars, Jupiter, or Saturn. We are small wisps of life when placed side by side with stars that have lived a billion years. But, we are still something to this galaxy. As far as we know, we are the only living planet, so our human foot-
prints boil down to what we do on a daily basis. Massacres can result in the extinction of mankind and overuse of fossil fuels could make our own planet extinct. However, the people of this Earth can one day be equal with the life of a star through positive actions. We can live for millions of years in the minds of our posterity, the next generation. Our work, as long as it is for the welfare of humanity, can leave a footprint for our future. Michael Myer, an astronomer from the University of Arizona, told the National Geographic in December 2004, “…that we’re not in a special place, that we might

Familia Unida's 10th Annual Wheelchair Wash: Community Health Access Fair Free and Open to the Community: The concept of Familia Unida’s Annual Wheel Chair Wash became a reality when Founder Irma Resendez was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, paralyzed for almost a year and used an electric wheelchair/scooter. Irma experienced feelings of isolation, prejudice and discrimination after her disability.
One of Irma’s dreams was to bring awareness to the fact , that people living with a disability have many abilites and to bring communities together to see for themselves how we are not so different after all. Irma’s vision was to get enough volunteers to pamper those who many times feel alone by giving people with a disability a day of VIP treatment which includes the washing of their wheelchairs and electric scooters. Holiday Events …. Independence Day will be celebrated by the cities of San Gabriel and Rosemead with parades and festivities. San Gabriel, celebrating its 100th anniversary will celebrate with a Kid Day parade and picnic. The parade will start at 9:30 in the historic Mission District. The City Picnic will follow at Smith Park with the event scheduled to last until 1PM. The City of Rosemead hosts a city-wide parade starting at 9AM and proceeding east along Valley Boulevard. The parade is certain to entertain you with bands, dancers, antique cars and honored guests. Afterwards, Rosemead Park will provide activities for holiday fun seekers with booths, food and music. Fireworks are scheduled to start later in the evening at Rosemead Park. There is always a lot going on at the park on the 4th of July. Come on out and enjoy one or both of these events at your local city venue. … Good Move … The ACE Trench Project which will lower the railroad tracks in San Gabriel unearthed more than 50,000 findings so far in the project. One of the more interesting finds was a Millrace used at Chapman’s Mill in the early 1800’s. It was recently unearthed, extracted and moved from its resting place for the past 150 plus years to its new home at Centennial Park across from San Gabriel City Hall. The Millrace was used to control and distribute the flow of water to the Mill. Its smooth trench channel with rock and adobe mortar was dug up and transported to its new home on Friday June 21st. Gabrieleno labor was more than likely used to construct the Millrace with Joseph Chapman performing the engineering of the construction. The addition fits well in historic San Gabriel and its official unveiling should take place sometime this summer…. Hot Days ….. June just ended and it’s already a scorcher of a summer season with temperatures exceeding 95 degrees. One way to keep cool is to make use of local community pools. Smith Park Pool located at 232 W. Broadway in San Gabriel will be open from 1 – 3:30 PM for recreational use. The fee is no more than $2.00 for all ages

Stevens received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his “extraordinary achievement.” Larry was discharged from the service on October 1, 1945. Upon returning home, Larry went back to work for his father’s business doing lathe and plaster. This is where Larry met the love of his live, Henrietta Ochoa, and in 1950 they were married. Once his dad retired in 1954, Larry joined
the Alhambra Fire Department in 1955. In 1960, Larry and his family moved to Temple City. Larry served as Alhambra Fire Chief for 18 years and retired in 1986 with a total of 31 years of fire service. Larry and Henrietta raised 5 children: Melinda, Lawrence Ernest, Nancy, Candyce and Roger and they have 8 grandchildren. They are a close family and very proud of their children and grandchildren.

Anime Expo Draws Huge Crowds to Los Angeles Convention Center
This 4th of July weekend, Mid Valley News and Mid Valley Radio attended the Anime Expo held at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The Anime Expo is an annual event put on by the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (SPJA) celebrating Japanese animation, culture and music. The expo featured a number of workshops, panels, and exclusive events where at-

tendees could express and expand their knowledge of the medium which could include ink, chalk and digital medium. The Main Events included the Anime Music Video Contest, Masquerade, and Battle of the Bands. These main events were a top attraction at the expo as well, providing attendees with an expansive list of entertainment.
The Anime Music Video (AMV) Contest offered participants an outlet of expressing their creativity through editing scenes from their favorite anime and cutting those scenes to music. Each contestant created a music video, which is subsequently entered into the contest. Their AMV is then played for the audience and then voted on by the audience. Several of the categories include Drama, Comedy, Action, and Romance. The winners received a special Director’s Chair as a prize. The Masquerade provided a chance for participants to show off their craftsmanship skills while cosplaying

(i.e. dressing up) as their favorite character. Additionally, contestants also had a chance to show off their acting skills by performing skits while dressed as characters. The Expo is a 24-hour convention that offers late-night dances, all night video programming, tabletop gaming rooms, and open-mic Karaoke in the late evening/early morning hours. Many of the attendees cosplay (dress up) while attending the convention, and there are many gatherings for fans of different anime and manga series. Renowned for its ability to bring famous guests to America for panels and concerts, the Anime Expo has been the site of many U.S. premieres of shows, movies, and bands. Touring the West and

In the event of a malfunction with the washer, we will then have to transport it back to the store where it was purchased. This scenario has severe consequences for our city: lost tax revenue. Hopefully, our local electeds will see fit to correct this problem and encourage Sears Outlet to offer home appliances to us, the residents of El Monte. Simple question: IS THIS GOOD BUSINESS? WE MOST ASSUREDLY SAY, NO, IT MOST ASSUREDLY IS NOT!" WE WANT TO SHOP HERE IN EL MONTE AND NOT ELSEWHERE! Should we not have the right to do so?

The Lakers didn't lose a superstar. They dodged a bullet. Actually I can't take credit for that line. It was written by a local sportswriter but in the case of Dwight Howard he was absolutely right. The Lakers didn't win with him last year. Why would they suddenly win with him this year? Howard has never won a title and is coming off a back injury. He wasn't the same last year and really is anybody really the same after a back injury? There's no guarantee that he would have been completely healthy again. Instead of mourning the loss of a star center the Lakers should be thanking him for saving them over one hundred million dollars. Howard doesn't want to be the man. He never did and that won't change. And then there are the surrounding parts. With a healthy Kobe Bryant, until late in the season, they finished seventh overall in the West. Why would be they be any better with a Bryant that is coming off an ACL injury. Steve Nash is a year older and so is Pau Gasol. And with Howard in the lineup Gasol was never going to flourish anyway. Metta World Peace? Really? Even if he's still on the roster he's never been the type of player that can score consistently-especially at 33. With Howard, the Lakers are stuck with him and his 100 million dollar salary for the next five years. Without him, they can have their pick of an abundance of free agents in 2014 including LeBron James. I'm not going to rip Howard for leaving $30 million on the table to sign with the Rockets. That's his choice. But it does make you wonder why the Lakers would desperately pursue a player that never wanted to be here. Those banners and billboards proclaiming “Stay” on them with a picture of Howard must now be an incredible embarrassment to the organization. Will the Rockets win an NBA championship now that Howard has signed on? For Dwight's sake they better hope so. For $100 million, second place doesn't cut it. Houston is going to need a little more than just Howard and James Harden to upend Miami or even San Antonio or Oklahoma City. Whether he likes it or not, the team and the entire city of Houston
will be looking at him to be “the man”. What about the Lakers? What do they do? Well after thanking Houston for taking Howard off of their hands, they bring Gasol back and give him a bigger role. They ease Bryant back, no need to rush him now, and count on a healthy Steve Blake to giving them a full year. As for World Peace, with the extra dough available, they might as well bring him back for defensive purposes. If nothing else he is entertaining. They might have to bite the bullet for one year until the 2014 crop but they will still be back in championship contention sooner than they would have been with Howard in the fold. When guys like Jonathon Pabelbon, Bruce Bochy, and Mike Scioscia say that Yasiel Puig hasn't paid his dues and shouldn't be in the All-Star game, it just makes them sound like bitter old men. If having a batting average of over .400 and having the second most hits in his first month of play second only to a guy named Joe DiMaggio isn't worthy of All-Star status then I don't know what is. I didn't know the All-Star game was based on career stats. I thought it was based on what you did in that particular year. Good news, bad news department: Good news: Two of the biggest local passing tournaments are still coming up this month at Santa Fe and Arroyo. Bad news: They are both scheduled for this Saturday July 13. Arroyo has 24 teams scheduled while Santa Fe tentatively has 25. Oh well I just might have to hit both. Gas prices be damned. Who was the guy that was saying the Dodgers should release Juan Uribe? So Dwight Howard didn't like it in Los Angeles...It was too hard, none too promising, Kobe was none too nice... As someone who used to like Dwight Howard I’ve come to understand something about him now that I’ve seen him up close...He just ain’t no good. ...And he’s only an average basketball player. Next Add Dodgers: Whatever happened to Drew Gordon? Next Add Rams: I would love to spend the last half of my life seeing the Rams play right here...but then again why would anyone want to come here to run a business? A lot of football going on this Saturday...a lot. Last Add Dwight Howard: Things can happen and you can have have a child young and out of wedlock...I understand that...But if you have one child and leave them for someone else to raise, then you are a bad person. If you have three children and leave them for someone else to raise you are a really bad person. If you have eight children, reportedly by eight different women and all you give them is money...You have some serious reconciling you need to do before the Lord because your soul is sick and in serious danger. Pardon me if I’m not excited about the MLB All-Star game... There was a time that I was, but a combination of lack of interest by the players, a fat pitch from Atlee Hammaker to Fred Lynn, and a game that ended in a tie have combined to make it a serious drag. Last Add All-Star Game: As far as I’m concerned its a few extra days off for Jake Peavy to get healthy, off the disabled list, and back in my fantasy pitching rotation. Rosemead's Henderson Transfers to Cathedral

Rosemead junior linebacker Matt Henderson has taken his talents to Cathedral. Henderson, who had 44 overall tackles for the Panthers last year, was expected to play a key part in the Rosemead defense this season. “He would have been one of the best linebackers in the area but he decided to transfer,” said Rosemead Coach Marc Paramo. “We wish him well and he's a good player but Rosemead football goes on. Well be fine.” Henderson also had 32 solo tackles and three sacks last season as a sophomore. Henderson made the decision to transfer to Cathedral within the last three weeks Paramo confirmed. Rosemead finished 4-6 overall last season and missed the playoffs but with a strong nucleus of young players the Panthers are again expected to contend for the Mission Valley League crown.
Do You Know Who This Guy Is? Twenty-five years ago this week (July 7, 1988) the California Angels beat the Cleveland Indians in Municipal Stadium, 7-1, in front of 10,889 people. Making his debut that day for the Angels was Terry Clark (La Puente High School Class of 1978) who went five innings, allowed just one earned run, walked none, and struck out one to get the win. The right handed Clark would go on to win his first five starts, and pitch his only MLB complete game shutout on August 27th, at home, against the New York Yankees. Clark struck out five and allowed seven hits to a
pinstripe line up that featured Don Mattingly, Ricky Henderson, Dave Winfield, Jack Clark, and Claudell Washington. That first season would be the high point of Clark’s career. In a twenty year professional run Clark spent six seasons in the Bigs and compiled a 10-23 record while playing for the Angels, the Houston Astros, the Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Cleveland Indians, and Texas Rangers. Originally he was a 23rd round draft selection of the St. Louis Cardinals out of Mt. San Antonio College. Currently he serves as a minor league pitching coach for the Round Rock Express of the Pacific Coast League.

The Housing Element is subject to detailed statutory requirements regarding its content and must be updated every eight years. It is the only General Plan Element subject to mandatory review by a State agency; the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD). The purpose of the Housing Element is to examine the housing needs of residents, create and guide housing policy in the City, and identify locations to accommodate the City’s Regional Housing Need Assessment (RHNA). This workshop will provide basic information about the Housing Element update process, legislative requirements, contents of the document, and the benefits of achieving a Housing Element that is certified by HCD. This was an eye-opening event. This event seems to be getting larger and larger every year. A couple of the big companies represented were Viz.com and Neon Alley. VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media) is one of the most comprehensive and innovative companies in the field of manga (graphic novel) publishing, animation and entertainment licensing of Japanese content. They displayed several animes such as Bleach, Naruto, Berserk and Blue Exorcist, to name a few. Neon Alley is a 24/7 video streaming service for anime fans. Japan, the term usually means a cartoon or comic from Japan, and even more specifically, drawings by a Japanese mangaka — a cartoon/comic artist. In recent decades, however, people from other countries have started working in this style, and the Japanese traditionally have used the word to refer to any cartoon or comic, regardless of where a person drew it or where he or she lives. Some experts argue that it’s better to categorize these works based on the specific characteristics usually found in the drawings for this reason. place spot the rest of the race to lead into his skid plate trophy dash race. When it came to the Lucas Oil Late Models Ryan Partridge came out on top with a win followed by Andrew Porter of La Verne.
