Potrero School Teachers Receive Grants from Retired Teachers

Two appreciative Potrero School teachers in the El Monte City School District recently received classroom grants from the California Retired Teachers’ Association #71 (CalRTA-SGV). Principal Liz Raymond was present at the faculty meeting to welcome the CalRTA #71 School Grant Committee to the campus. Patti Hahn, CalRTA #71 School Grant Chair, awarded grants to two Potrero teachers who had requested donations to purchase classroom

materials and equipment for their students’ use. Secondgrade teacher Yelitza Day had requested a donation for a Vietnamese Rosetta Stone program, English levels one and two, to meet her students’ needs. Rene Siegel, sixth-grade teacher, had asked for funds to help her purchase a wireless printer for the computer lab. Both young women expressed their gratitude for the school grants. This is the tenth year that CalRTA #71 has awarded grants to help teachers fulfill their classroom needs. The grant presentations also serve to acquaint future retirees with the organization. "It gave me the push I needed to prepare for life after high school.” “Two years ago I would never have imagined myself joining the LEARNer Program," said Pioneer High School junior Victor Rodriguez. "It taught me to balance my time and get done what needed to be done.” According to LEARN

summer family fun Los Angeles Union Station Los Angeles

If you are looking for an adventure that includes a train ride, why not drive down to Sierra Madre Villa Station and catch the Metro Gold Line. The last stop is Union Station. Exit and begin your walking tour of the Station and see its rich history first hand. When you arrive at Union Station there are many things to see. Check out the massive waiting room and the overstuffed chairs at the main entrance. The architecture is amazing and you can feel the history all around you. And, don’t be surprised if you recognize something from a movie that you may have seen. Union Station has been continually used for films from 1950 like “Union Station” to more current films like “Speed,” Pearl Harbor,”

by Jo Anne Disney

“The Italian Job” as well as the TV series, “24.” Union Station in Los Angeles opened in May of 1930 and was declared an historical landmark in 1980. It is known as “the last of the great railway stations built in the United States.” When it first opened, Union Station served “the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, Southern Pacific Railroad and Union

Pacific Railroad as well as the Pacific Electric Railway and Los Angeles Railway.” During WWII, Union Station was heavily used. But as times changed, more cars and airplanes were used for transportation resulting in less frequent use of the railroad. However, with the addition of the current Metro Lines, train usage has become very popular. Now at Union Station there is the Metro Blue Line that goes from Long Beach to Los Angeles, the Metro Red Line that goes from Downtown Los Angeles, to North Hollywood and MidWilshire, the Metro Gold Line that goes from Pasadena to Los Angeles, and last but not least, Metrolink, Southern California’s Commuter Rail Network as well as Amtrak the intercity rail service to and from Los Angeles. Add in the current price of gasoline and Union Station is gaining popularity everyday! Summer is the perfect time to explore local places. Union Station offers a rich history, including a very trendy restaurant inside called Traxx. It is famous for desserts. So as you walk around the station, just think about all the famous people that boarded trains at this historic landmark. Union Station is located at 800 N. Alameda Street. What an exciting way to spend the day.

Dwain Crum “The Sea Rebel”, was born in Pasadena, CA and a lifelong resident of Rosemead, CA. Retired after 29 years as a history teacher at Rosemead High School. Dwain is fulfilling a lifelong dream of traveling around the world.

It is a long way from the Land of the Dollar Bill to the Land of the Euro, at least it was for me on the Pacific Princess. 30,647 nautical miles, that was the distance covered during my 107 day cruise from Port Everglades, Florida to Venice, Italy. Crossing the Atlantic is a lot shorter way of reaching Europe but World Cruises almost always sail to the West. By sailing West the ships are gaining hours rather than losing them. While this is good for the passengers, it is even more important for the crew. The 2013 cruise on the Pacific Princess was billed as 107 Unforgettable Days, Six Continents, and 40 Legendary Ports of Call --- and it was. Starting from North America down to South America then across the Pacific, reaching Australia, Asia, Africa and finally

Europe (only Antarctica remained untouched). While the legendary city of Venice in Italy was the ships final destination, we would reach four ports in Europe prior to Italy. In order the four ports were Limassol, Cyprus - Istanbul, Turkey - Athens, Greece and Kotor, Montenegro. Europe was the continent most of my ancestors came from (although I'm part Cherokee). I soon realized that while my ship had finally reached Europe, it was not the same Europe that my grandmother Fiorentina Cravea had left in 1914. Life is about changes and Europe is clearly going through a period of change. I used to tell my students at Rosemead High School that the answer to any question is money, and that is clearly the case with Europe

today. A common currency, the Euro, has replaced the various national coins of the past. A more unified Europe is needed as the World progresses, but change is hard. Cyprus, Turkey, Greece and Montenegro are all places in economic turmoil, though some not as much as others. The Cold War is long over, as distant a memory as World War I or World War II. Europe's future is tied to how well the various nations of Europe can work together both economically and in other areas. Time now to leave my home for 107 days, the Pacific Princess, and explore Venice: the city of canals. My Photo Blog - http:// searebelcolon.tumblr.com

All-American Parade …. The Rosemead City 4th of July Parade was a fantastic display of American culture and spirit. The parade featured an assortment of entries including Aztec dancers, Mariachi Bands, Asian Art dancing groups, lady roller bladers, antique cars, motorcycle groups, show cars, and antique bicycles. Also local youth and service groups like Boy Scout Troop #594, cub scouts, the Star Wars Touring group, Military re-enactors, Chapter 506 of the Star Touring and Riding Motorcycle Group, and the All-Star Band marched in the parade. There were over 70 entries in the parade which moved down Valley Boulevard between Muscatel and Loma Avenue before proceeding up to Rosemead Park. I had the pleasure of riding in a 1916 Model T Ford owned by Larry Haney of San Gabriel. The Model T has been in Larry’s family since 1954 when his uncle recalled an abandoned shell of the 1916 model near the Cajon Pass, and then went and recovered it. It took quite a bit of work to restore the vehicle which ceased to be made starting in 1927. The seats were re-made at Harrah’s Museum in Reno which specialized in antique car restorations. Larry estimated that the car has been in over 100 parades since the 1970’s and the last one was the Sierra Madre Parade earlier in the year. The car can travel 40 – 50 miles per hour and the speedometer only had a maximum speed of 50 miles per hour. The parade was a great way to start the 4th of July holiday, and I would never have been able to meet Smokey the Bear, riding in a car driven by Rosemead City Manager Jeff Allred. It was great fun for those watching as well as those riding in the parade…. More Growth In San Gabriel…. The City Council approved a mixeduse development at 416 E. Las Tunas Drive recently. The project features 9,000 square feet of commercial space, 15 residential condos and 18 live-work units. Supposedly, the project will eliminate blight and im-

prove neighborhood aesthetics. But I see it a different way. I see no blight along Las Tunas. Sure there are some vacant buildings and open lots but nothing that a little development wouldn’t fix. What this project does bring in is more traffic and the continued miss planning by the city. Look at the mixed-use project on San Gabriel Boulevard north of the railroad tracks and south of Broadway. Watch how much congestion will be caused with the additional traffic generated when these units are all filled. The City’s plan is to grow and develop, and that small quaint town of San Gabriel with all of their potholes, will become a congested city, still with all their potholes. To continue to build single property projects without an overall plan will result in a hodgepodge of buildings without anything in common. The city should change its motto from the ‘City with a Mission’ to the ‘City without a Plan’….. The tangent dreams of buffalo, they pursue the hope that is in you and I.”---GrahamDorsey

The El Monte Lions theme for this football season is leads by example... I think it’s great. If anyone, is in any position of attention, doesn’t make any difference if they are a minister, an athlete, politician, or parent, or even playing on their high school team...They have to know, they have to be reminded, and more importantly they have to be expected to be a role model. Parents are the first and primary role model, I know I don’t want my kids looking any place else for a role model, but few of us will ever realize how big an impact even the smallest of things we do have on the impressionable. This works in all aspects of life. In my early years as a preacher there was an old man named Dalton. He may have been 5’7” at one time in his life, he may even have weighed as much as 130 pounds at some point. He was 80 when I met him, wore a cool looking fedora, and drove a short bed yellow Ranchero. For being in his eighth decade on the planet he was pretty cool. He listened to the radio, went through the Depression, saw World War II and the Korean War...He saw television come into being, presidents shot, culture change, and felt the pain of people around him passing away. Dalton used to sit on the left hand side of my sanctuary and as I would struggle to make it through my messages he always gave me the slightest of nods and smile. He never testified in front of anyone that I was a great preacher. He only gave me that slight smile and confirming nod. He was in my church for about a year before he moved with his wife up the coast and only recently passed away in his mid-90’s. I never got the chance to tell him how important and affirming his smile and nod was. It kept me on track. The smallest of details, the smallest of actions...keeping our mouth shut, walking away, and doing acts of service for others no one but you and Lord will ever be aware of. We have so much power, so much strength in our ability to turn a life, to change a life, to bless a life. We should always remember that we always make an impact. Hopefully for the good. Following Tuesday’s practice Chuck Leonardis and his staff were let go by newly instated Principal Duane Russell. Sources at the school tell Mid Valley Sports that the search for a new coach begins immediately. More to follow.
