“The Exchange at Gateway project reflects El Monte’s continued commitment to ensuring that our families have access to safe, affordable housing options,” Mayor Andre Quintero said. “We are thankful and excited to be working with
the Jamboree Housing Corporation to see this major construction project come to fruition.” Once completed, residents will have access to quality housing including amenities such as laundry facilities, a central courtyard with barbe-
cues, a tot lot, and outdoor seating areas. In addition, there will be a 3,350 squarefoot community building that will include a kitchen, computer lab and multipurpose room for onsite resident services, provided by Jamboree’s Resident

The Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority (Construction Authority) today held a dedication ceremony for the Duarte/City of Hope Station, the first in a series of dedications to celebrate the upcoming substantial completion of construction for the six-station, 11.5-mile light rail project from Pasadena to Azusa. Today’s event was attended by elected officials at all levels of government, transportation officials and hundreds of community stakeholders. The Foothill Gold Line project, which broke ground in June 2010, is on time and on budget to be turned over to Metro for pre-revenue service in late-September 2015. Does This Bug You?
Dutch Supermodel Ymre Stiekema posed for an advertisement promoting a Bugaboo stroller for Vogue magazine’s Netherland Journal. In the photo, Stiekema is running while holding a stroller containing her two year-old daughter. The photo sparked controversy, reported PopSugar journalist Rebecca Gruber. This is due to Stiekema’s attire- the “athletic” equivalent of a bikini: bra and underwear that covers as little as possible. The advertisement contains many problems. Primarily, the fact that the advertisement is focused on a stroller doesn’t mean that the woman has to be displayed like a swimsuit model. Yes, she’s a modelbut not for the stroller! Is she being objectified, since she is a woman? The image can be taken in a lighter way, however. Admittedly,
her body looks great. She is superhumanly fit, even after pregnancy. This image can be taken in such a way of appreciating her body and how hard she has worked for it. In counteraction to this argument, and in par with the first, Bugaboo also has another image with a father pushing the strollerand he is fully clothed. He isn’t shirtless or parading a Speedo, but wearing regular workout clothes. Thus, it brings back attention to the first argument that can be made for the photo- the good old double-standard: sexism. By putting both images side by side, it can be argued that the male is not being objectified (because the patriarchy doesn’t need that, it feels too homophobic to accept such an image), yet the female is. It brings back to the concept that, without a smoking hot body, a woman is therefore

I am a lot worse than anybody could realize; I have been known as the devil in disguise. I sure can destroy homes and tear families apart; By taking the kids and breaking the parent's hearts. I have real super powers, just try me and you'll see; However, if you do, I just may never set you free. Oh, you can try me once and I might even let you go; But, second time, guess who is going to be in control. I will be your companion and you'll be my slave; Just maybe I will send you to an early grave. You'll commit a lot of crimes, cheat and often lie; Believe me, you will do anything just to get high. I'm going to take you to some places you haven't been; Separate you from your God and all of your friends. You're going to lose everything, even your home; I'll keep putting you down until you're all alone. Drugs you'll wish you'd never seen or even heard; Your life will be so miserable, you won't say the word. I'll hang on with all my might, so you won't get well; Then I can show you what it's like to be living in hell.

The Offspring Perform in Front of Sell-Out Crowd at Orange County Fair by Lucia Flores Costa Mesa
It was a sort of homecoming for Huntington Beachbased band The Offspring, as they returned to the Orange County Fair on July 30th to perform in front of a sold-out crowd at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, CA. The Offspring, going strong since 1984, have been touring the world performing their greatest hits, plus a few new ones like “Coming For You.” Their stop in the OC was one of a few local shows they were scheduled to play that week (including a show on July 31st at the Hollywood Palladium, which was also sold out). After a performance from opening band The Interrupters, The Offspring took the stage with as much energy as if this was 1998 and they were on tour promoting “Americana.” This year actually marks the 17th anniversary of the release of “Americana,” and they did play several songs from that album including “Pretty Fly for a White Guy,” “Why

Don’t You Get A Job,” and “The Kids Aren’t Alright.” And that wasn’t all; The Offspring continued pleasing their fans’ palates by performing classic hits like “Gotta Get Away,” “Bad Habit,” “Gone Away,” and “Come Out and Play (Keep
‘Em Separated).” Ending the show with “Self Esteem,” The Offspring thanked their fans for the support through all of these years. The crowd was a mix of all ages. From young teens to grandpas, The Offspring’s music tran-
scends generations. The music never ages, as fans of the band can attest, as a capacity crowd was able to share that musical experience. The Offspring recently kicked off their European Tour in Germany and will visit Austria, Belgium, and
the United Kingdom. For more information on The Offspring and their upcoming tour dates, please visit www.TheOffspring.com. For more information on the OC Fair and Summer Concert Series, please visit www. OCFair.com.

Over the last 50 years many changes have taken place all over the world, especially due in major part to technology. The one place thought to be reliable would be your local post office. That may not necessarily be true. I grew up and still live in Temple City and frequent the Temple City Post Office. Of course with the passing years, things have changed just like in any organization. However, the quality of customer service seems to be lacking. While many regular faces have retired, including our regular mailman, Ralph (we miss you so much), things just are not the same. Besides the parking problem, the appearance of the inside of the post office appears to be in need of some TLC. Also, there are almost always not enough clerks to handle the customers. The majority of the time the line
is long, sometimes out the door into the lobby area. Last Wednesday was the release date of the Elvis stamp. After standing in line to purchase the stamp, I was first told they had it. The clerk started going through drawers and then went in the back. As this was going on, I notice how unorganized and untidy the whole area seemed. Then the clerk returned informing me that the postmaster was off and only he could release the new stamp. She told me to come back tomorrow. This answer didn’t surprise me as I had told a friend the night before the T.C. Post Office would not have the stamp. I thanked the clerk and proceeded to drive to the Sierra Madre Post Office to purchase the Elvis stamp, as my friend told me this post office was great. When I got to the post office, the line was short and I was greeted
with a friendly smile and warm hello from the clerk, asking if she could assist me. I asked for the Elvis stamp. The clerk informed me they had them and asked if I had placed an order for them, as she had those orders ready for pick up. I told her I had not ordered them and she said no problem, as she had ordered extra stamps knowing how popular they would be. I purchased my Elvis stamps and thanked the clerk who wished me a nice day. As I proceeded to walk out the door, I looked around this post office. It was meticulously organized and very professional looking. I realized that good customer service does still exist, as I walked to my car with a smile on my face. Jo Anne Disney Temple City
Still an Icon As Time Goes By by Annick J. Downhower National
During a career spanning five decades, actress Ingrid Bergman won three Oscars, two Emmys, and a Tony. August 29, 2015 will be the 100th anniversary of her birth. To commemorate this, on Thursday, August 20, PostNord Sweden and the United States Postal Service (USPS) will jointly issue stamps honoring Bergman. The American stamp is part of the USPS’ Legends of Hollywood series. Born in Sweden, Bergman had a successful acting career there before being brought to Hollywood by movie producer David O. Selznick. She went on to win Academy Awards for her performances in “Gaslight” (1944), “Anastasia” (1956), and “Murder on the Orient Express” (1974). However, Bergman is most famous for her lead role opposite Humphrey Bogart in 1942’s classic “Casablanca.” In the timeless World War II drama, she plays Ilsa, a woman torn between the two men she loves. It is Bergman’s character that makes the famous request to the piano player (played by Dooley Wilson): “Play it, Sam. Play ‘As Time Goes By.’”
An image of Bergman from “Casablanca” is part of the artwork on the US stamp sheet. The Forever stamp features a 1940s portrait of Bergman shot by Hollywood photographer Laszlo Willinger; the image has been digitally colorized by artist Kristen Monthei. PostNord Sweden will be issuing two stamps in honor of Bergman. The first is their adaptation of Willinger’s photo. The second is a watercolor of Bergman’s profile. Between 4 and 7pm this Thursday, August 20, the USPS will sell first-day covers and the Swedish stamps in strips of four at a special display space in the West Hollywood Library (625 North San Vicente Blvd.). Both the US Forever stamp and one of the Swedish stamps will be on the first-day cover. These limited availability products can only be purchased at the

West Hollywood Library display or at USPS.com. PostNord Sweden will unveil their stamp issue on August 24 in Stockholm at the opening night screening of the documentary “Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words.” An additional ceremony is being planned for September at the Swedish Embassy in Washington, DC. It has not been announced if any of Bergman’s four children, who include news journalist Pia Lindstrom and actress and model Isabella Rossellini, will attend the events.

Warriors …. The San Gabriel School lasted until a new school was built in 1889. It was promptly named George Washington School and was the only school in the San Gabriel School District. Built as one of the most ornate buildings in Southern California, the school was built on its current site at the corner of Santa Anita and Hermosa Avenues. The original San Gabriel School building was eventually sold and converted into a single-family residence. As the need for an upgraded school became apparent, plans were formulated to purchase, build and establish a new school for the children of the San Gabriel area. Choosing a location for the school became the most controversial of the planning decisions with the Old Mill Arroyo becoming the main point of contention. The Arroyo was always subject to becoming an uncontrolled roaring river as in 1884, when over 50 inches of rain poured down in the valley and roared through the foothills. Residents of Alhambra wanted the school site to be located on the west side of the Arroyo thereby making any crossing of the possible river unnecessary by children living in the Alhambra area. San Gabriel and other communities on the East side of the Arroyo wanted the school built on the East side for the same reason. The original San Gabriel School had been built on the west side of the Arroyo. This time the residents living on the east side of the Arroyo won the debate as the site for the new school were selected to be east of the Arroyo. Once the site was selected, Alhambra residents bolted from the school district and formed their own school district, the Alhambra School District. The new schoolhouse was to be built at a cost of $20,000 with red sandstone, brick and redwood and would become one of the showcase buildings in the county bringing numerous visitors to take a look at its magnificent architecture and structure. In 1889, Washington School was opened to 150 students and lasted for 23 years until the growing city and population forced its demolition in 1922 when a new and larger school was built on
the same site. The entire old Washington school was completely demolished with only one memory of the old schoolhouse preserved. It was the old school bell which had rang its welcoming tones since opening day in 1889 and was now slated to be destroyed. But a save the bell campaign headed by Mrs. Dorothy Gibson and Mrs. Charles Schnoonover raised $100 in 2 weeks to save the bell. Students brought pennies, teachers gave part of their salaries and graduates made monetary gifts to keep the only thing that remained of the original Washington School. Today, 93 years later, the old school bell sits proudly in the center court of Washington School, home of the Washington Warriors, a proud mascot for a proud school…

rendered useless. With these arguments pitted against one another, it is implied that our world is becoming more and more complex as images become more and more confusing. So many viewpoints can be taken, and it depends on an individual’s extremity in a certain belief (misogyny, misandry, and misanthropyfor instance) to determine what feels right or wrong. I say “feels,” because we can’t know for sure the
intention of a company. As a creator myself, I make projects that mean one thing to me, but are interpreted differently from my audience. Similarly, Bugaboo may have wanted to objectify Stiekema or appreciate her dedication to health. Whatever the case is, it’s important to note that opinions are opinions, and no matter how harsh or reasonable, they’re not always right- nor are they always wrong.
Rio Hondo College Wins Five-Year Student Services Grant by William Diepenbrock Whittier
Rio Hondo College has secured a five-year U.S. Department of Education grant that will allow it to continue offering its TRIO/Student Support Services program to students who face significant challenges in post-secondary education, including firstgeneration students, low-income students and students with disabilities. Rio Hondo competed with 1,400 other applicants for a share of nearly $290 million in federal grants – the fourth such grant it has secured since 2000. The College will receive $247,584 annually. “This new grant is an affirmation of all the hard work our Student Support Services team does to help our students succeed in completing programs of study at Rio Hondo College,” said Superintendent/President Teresa Dreyfuss. “Now, they will be able to continue their mission for five more years.” Jasmine Mageno, Interim Director of TRIO Programs for Rio Hondo, said the group continually refines its approach to services based on data collected about its efforts. In the coming year, the agency will adjust how it offers tutoring services, hold more workshops to support
students holistically and revise its marketing approach to ensure students know about the opportunities available to them through TRIO. “Rio Hondo College’s mission is to help students as they pursue their college and career dreams. TRiO/ Student Support Services helps make those dreams a reality for hundreds of our students who need the most support,” said Board of Trustees President Madeline Shapiro.

The cities of Los Angeles burned with protest of the unfair treatment of minorities and to this day is still a big problem in our society. “Straight Outta Compton” is directed by F. Gary Gray. He is the director of Ice Cube’s movie “Friday” and has made other films like “Italian Job” and “The Negotiator.” Gray did a fantastic job directing this film and he really showed Compton as the birthplace of the rap genre. The film stars new actors that were picked so that they were not associated with previous films. Ice Cube’s son O’Shea Jackson Jr. auditioned for the role like every other actor and had to work hard. Dr. Dre is portrayed by Corey Hawkins who has minor roles in other films like “Non-Stop” and “Iron Man 3.” The late Eazy-E is portrayed by Jason Mitchell who has been in “Contraband” and “Broken City.” These actors

A Glance into the Future of Toyota’s Hydrogen Mirai by Devette Johnson and Glen Maldonado El Monte
The Toyota Mirai will be coming to Longo Toyota in late 2015. It is a California zero emission vehicle with horse power of 153, and with a full tank of hydrogen, it can go more than 300 miles in range. It takes about 5 minutes to refuel, and currently there are very few stations to refuel. But by 2016, station numbers will triple. The Mirai is more on the luxury side. It has a push-button keyless start system, 8 way heated seats with a heated steering wheel, and noise reduced glass. It also has a premium audio system with HD radio built in with JBL speakers, touch
screen controls for controlling the air conditioning and heated seats. All lights in the vehicle are LED and the outside mirrors are heated and have power folding. Safety, like in all Toyota cars, is at the highest caliber as the Mirari has 8 SRS airbags, a blind spot monitor, a backup camera, and a rear crosstraffic alert. Also, Mirari has multiple safety features to monitor the hydrogen in the car of course. This car also allows you to have a California white HOV carpool sticker, to allow a single person in the carpool lanes. The sleek body style reminds you of the Lexus GS 300 in the front and the tail end has a style of its own. If you were to Courtesy photo by Devette Johnson

try and compare the rear end to another car, it would be close to the new Toyota Corolla but not exactly the same. Of course this is just our opinion, but if you saw this car on the road you would look twice. From first glance you would not think this was a hydro fuel cell car. The only indication that it is a hydro fuel cell car is the badge on the car. Our hats off to Toyota for a great looking car.
As soon as you enter the car, you feel good. The acceleration was better than we thought it would be for an electric engine. It also features a sport mode if you want to go faster. The drive was nice and smooth; it felt more like a Lexus then a Chevy Volt to me. The HD radio was good and the stations were coming in crystal clear, in cd quality. The back is spacious too, but only has 2 seats. There is an island
in the middle for an armrest and cup holding. We like the drive and in the future, we would consider this car when we shop around. As technology changes for electric and hybrid cars, the automakers are taking in consideration the style, mileage, safety and the ride. After driving in this car, the ride was quite smooth. Mirai’s acceleration was nice compared to the Lexus CT 200h hatchback which has a Mirai continued on page 13

I took some heat from a friend this past week when I said I have more faith that Santa Clause will come down my chimney this Christmas than the Dodgers making it to the World Series this fall. You can drop me a line if you like, and tell me why I’m wrong, but this Dodger team doesn’t inspire me. Perhaps it’s because they don’t have any inspirational players. Now you could say Clayton Kershaw is inspirational, great pitcher, great human being, but he only pitches every fifth day. I risk further alienation from my friends with this next line (but it is what I believe), the San Francisco Giants will win the National League West. MidBits: *** Former APU All American running back Terrell Watson broke off a 26yard run in his professional debut for the Cincinnati Bengals over the weekend. *** Philadelphia Eagles fans gave Tim Tebow a standing ovation after driving the team to a late touchdown in Sunday’s 36-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts. It was Tebow’s first game since 2012 when he was a member of the New York Jets. *** Latest reports leaking from the NFL have the Rams coming back to Los Angeles but an effort is being made to have the Oakland Raiders join them in the new stadium to be built in Inglewood. Fantasy Football Draft Tip: New York Giants running back Shane Vereen. *** Speaking of the New York Giants, they are paying back up quarterback Ricky Stanzi $645,000 this season. Stanzi is in the fifth year of his NFL career and has yet to throw a pass in a game. This supports my theory that the greatest job in America is third string quarterback in the NFL. Mid Valley Spotlight: Monrovia QB Asaph Zamora by Joe Torosian El Monte
Asaph Zamora: Monrovia QB, Sr., 5-11/165 2014 Stats: 115-completions/210attempts, 2,151 yards, 24 touchdowns, 10 interceptions Quarterback was a major
concern for the Wildcat faithful coming into last season, but Zamora quickly eased the fears with a break out year. He threw for nearly 2,200 yards while leading Monrovia to a Rio Hondo League title and into the

second round of the Central Division playoffs. The Cats could always run the ball but with Zamora behind center, the passing attack is dangerous as well. With a year of experience under his belt and his con-
fidence growing by the day, 2015 should be even better. Zamora and the Wildcats are looking to a return to the title game.

The Peterson Principle By Tim Peterson
What other sport is there where you have to work out for a couple of hours in triple digit temperatures while wearing a helmet and a full set of Body Armor? Sure, baseball is played in the summer (mostly on the professional level) and sometimes the thermometer will hit 100 but you're playing in a cotton uniform and a baseball cap. And you can relax after three outs every few minutes for seven or even nine innings. In football you're playing in searing heat while wearing full head gear and pads without continuous breaks. It can be brutal. Make no mistake, football is survival of the fittest. Saturday was a good example of that as Cal was out at Dick Torres Stadium at Pioneer High School in heat that felt more like 105. “Well you'll never have to practice in that type of heat again,” Cal head coach Kyle Trudell encouraged his troops after practice. “You played in it and you survived.” Coaches will tell you that games in December are won in the heat of August. And if you survive July and August you'll make it to December. As far as Cal goes, the Condors have good size along the lines and some quality skill players. Their overall numbers are solid as well. A third place team in the Del Rio last year, Cal looks like a team ready to take that next step. Do I like La Serna as the league favorite? Based on history yes and there's nothing that says the Lancers will fall off in 2015. Margarito Beltran says they have been working hard and are ready to compete. Jonathan Ceballos looks like the guy that will replace Enrique Pacheco at quarterback. He has a nice target to throw to in another Jonathan – Wise - who had close to 600 yards receiving a year ago. Anthony Garcia (693 yards rushing, 300 yards receiving) is back as well. It's hard to bet against the Lancers. Remember this is a team that beat St. Francis last year in the playoffs before falling to Southeast champion Crescenta Valley by only three. Not hearing much out of Santa Fe... The most interesting teams in the Southeast might be the ones not in our Top 10. Muir, Burroughs, Harvard Westlake, Dominguez, Paramount, Bellflower, Mayfair and Norwalk all didn't make the cut. These are all potential playoff teams. When was the last time Muir wasn't in a preseason Top 10? And really, what's up with El Rancho? I'm getting

Robbie Keane scored twice to lead the Los Angeles
Galaxy to a 2-1 win over FC Dallas Saturday night. Both goals came in the second half. Down 1-0, Keane took a pass from Robbie Rogers in the box and headed it into the left corner in the 51st minute. The game winner came in the 55th minute when Keane headed one home off a chip from Giovani dos Santos. The Galaxy improved to 12-7-7 with the victory. As you drive the Mirai and give it full throttle there’s no delay, which made it fun to drive. It would have been nice to try this car on the freeway to test it at a dead stop to acceleration, but our test gave us a great mini simulation. Over all this car can be a great alternative for some commuters. It is projected to get 67 miles per gallon
equivalent to gas mileage and estimated driving range rating of 312 miles on a single tank of hydrogen fuel. The only down fall for this car is that there are very few hydrogen filling stations. Thank you Longo Toyota for giving Mid Valley News a great opportunity to testdrive another alternative to gas fueled cars. The selection of great looking and more mileage efficient cars are on the horizon.

In consideration of the state of California’s continued drought and its severe impact on finite municipal water resources, El Monte City Councilmembers approved a resolution declaring State IV of the El Monte’s Drought Response Conservation Plan at a City Council Meeting held on Aug. 4. The City’s water rate is approximately 52 gallons of water used per person per day, which is about 60 percent less than the water usage rates of adjacent cities. This has been achieved through a variety of conservation efforts, including reducing watering at City parks by 33 percent and eliminating the practice of watering grass in street medians. “California’s persistent drought conditions affect every person in this state, including all of us here in El Monte,” said Mayor Andre Quintero. “As this severe drought continues, it is becoming increasingly important that we use our water frugally. We need to make sure we are protecting this incredibly valuable resource.” This declaration will prohibit use of water to irrigate turf on public street medians, institute new watering days at residences and adopt an emergency conservation regulation strategy to ensure water conservation. “The Governor has made it clear that this drought is serious enough to declare emergency water conserva-
tion,” Mayor Pro Tem Bart Patel said. “As a City, we need to take a look and see if there are innovative practices we can put into place in order to eliminate all non-essential watering. I am quite confident our City has already made strides to reduce water use and that we will exceed our goal.” Due to emergency drought conditions persisting throughout California, the State Water Resources Control Board adopted an emergency regulation requiring an immediate 25 percent reduction in overall drinking urban water use statewide in accordance with Gov. Jerry Brown’s Executive Order. “Our water is too valuable to waste, and I have longsupported increased conservation measures in the City,” said Councilwoman Victoria Martinez. “Our City has already instituted some of the best practices mandated by the State, but we can always do more to protect water resources during this historic drought.” As part of this ordinance, outdoor irrigation of landscape by sprinklers will be limited. New rules will permit sprinkler watering only on Mondays and Thursdays for street addresses with an “even” last digit. Outdoor irrigation by sprinklers is permitted only on Tuesdays and Fridays for those locations having a street address with an “odd” last digit. Sprinklers can only be set for a duration less than 15 minutes. “As I drive through
El Monte, it is clear that residents have already done their part to conserve water,” said Councilwoman Norma Macias. “Though we are reducing water days, these restrictions will provide enough water for our plants to continue to thrive. The City’s recent effort to encourage tree planting will also help reduce water by enhancing our shade cover.” Declaration of Stage IV of the City’s Drought Response Conservation Plan will include the following new rules: • Hosing off sidewalks, driveways and parking areas is prohibited, except to properly dispose of dangerous substances or wash away spills that present a hazard • Leaks must be repaired within 72 hours • No outdoor irrigation shall take place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. • Pools and spas with covers shall be covered when not in use to minimize water evaporation The City will actively encourage residents to conserve water by planting water-wise plants, using drip irrigation and utilizing the City’s free-mulch program. “We know that our residents will step up and continue to conserve water to meet the State mandates,” said Councilman Juventino “J” Gomez. “We are going to make it a priority to proactively reach out to our community so they are aware of the new restrictions.”
