• Contact your local emergency management office, local American Red Cross chapter, state geological survey or department of natural resources. • Mobile homes and homes not attached to their foundations are at particular risk during an earthquake. • Buildings with foundations resting on landfill and other unstable soils are at increased risk of damage. Did you know? Doorways are no stronger than any other part of the structure. During an earthquake, get under a sturdy piece of furniture and hold on. This will provide some protection from falling objects that can injure you during an earthquake. • Become aware of fire evacuation and earthquake plans for all of the buildings you occupy regularly. • Pick safe places in each room of your home, workplace and/or school. A safe place could be under a piece of furniture or against an interior wall away from windows, bookcases or tall furniture that could fall on you. • Practice drop, cover and hold on in each safe place. If you do not have sturdy
furniture to hold on to, sit on the floor next to an interior wall and cover your head and neck with your arms. • Keep a flashlight and sturdy shoes by each person’s bed. • Make sure your home is securely anchored to its foundation. • Bolt and brace water heaters and gas appliances to
wall studs. • Bolt bookcases, china cabinets and other tall furniture to wall studs. • Hang heavy items, such as pictures and mirrors, away from beds, couches and anywhere people sleep or sit. • Brace overhead light fixtures. • Install strong latches or

bolts on cabinets. Large or heavy items should be closest to the floor. • Learn how to shut off the gas valves in your home and keep a wrench handy for that purpose. • Learn about your area’s seismic building standards and land use codes before you begin new construction.

El Monte Union High Shcool District Adopts Resolution Urging Repeal or Change to SB 858 or Current Resident
by Anne Donofrio-Holter El Monte
The El Monte Union High School District (EMUHSD) Board of Trustees adopted a resolution on the local reserves cap (SB 858) at their August 6, 2014 board meeting asking the California legislature and Governor Brown to immediately repeal or substantially change the language contained in Section 27 of the bill. Given today's uncertain economic climate, school district reserve funds are essential. During economic downturns, these funds can assist with payroll expenses and help the District pay for items such as school bus
replacement, supplies for students and unexpected maintenance like roofing or repairs to heating and cooling systems. The EMUHSD currently maintains a reserve of approximately 10.78% to provide for these expenses. SB 858, signed by Governor Brown on June 20 of this year, will require school districts to spend their reserve funds down to no more than two to three times the minimum level of the statutory reserve for economic uncertainties or emergencies. "In one year, school districts would be forced to
spend down their reserves and ending balances to levels that could jeopardize fiscal solvency," said Superintendent Nick Salerno. "Many school districts are still funded below their 2007-08 levels and cannot survive another downturn without fiscally responsible cash reserves." The EMUHSD resolution, passed unanimously by the EMUHSD Board of Trustees, states that Section 27 of SB 858 needs to be repealed allowing districts to establish and maintain reserves above the statutory limit to better enable the district to
maintain programs and services during economically challenging times. "The last round of budget cuts to schools was unprecedented in the quantity and duration in the history of our state. Now we are expected to keep minimal reserves, unless a waiver is granted for a specific reason, and rely on the state to help with a rainy day fund," added Salerno. "I do not want to have to rely on the state when an economic downturn comes again."

South El Monte Library to Restore Its Service Hours by Yolanda De Ramus So. El Monte
The County of Los Angeles Public Library will restore its service hours at libraries that had hours reduced in 2009 – 2010, effective Tuesday, September 2, 2014. Libraries have
evolved into community centers that provide invaluable tools to their patrons. Individuals are visiting libraries to search for jobs, homework help, computer literacy classes, online learning tools, early childhood literacy programs, teen services, and other programs. The restoration in hours will grant the Library staff an
opportunity to provide additional programs and services to their patrons. The restoration of library service hours, at libraries located in cities throughout Los Angeles County, is made possible by the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors approval to increase the Library budget by $3.6 million to restore
library hours as they were in 2009-10. The new services hours for South El Monte Library will be: Monday: Closed Tuesday: 1pm – 8pm Wednesday: 10am – 5pm Thursday: 1pm – 8pm Friday: 10am – 5pm Saturday: 10am – 5pm Sunday: Closed

Webb'S Rules
A FEW BEERS
by Eugene R. Webb
In many people's way of thinking; Having a few beers is not really drinking. In fact, drinking water is about the same; Therefore, drinking beer is pretty tame. The truth is beer is a mind-altering drug; It's a hazard and can't be swept under the rug. For it's alcohol and if you drink enough; It can be just as dangerous as the hard stuff. With alcohol, it's easy to cross over the line; And good people do this, time after time. And each time they swear, never, never again; But it will happen, they just don't know when. Yet beer was my favorite drink of choice; And when I drank I had a real loud voice. Of course, I was arrested for drunk driving; I realize I was not living, I was just surviving. I'm grateful to the judge who sentenced me; To Alcoholics Anonymous, where I should be. 47 Years I've lived without drugs of any kind; Enjoying life at it's fullest, one day at a time.
Student's Corner Understanding Topics Better: Racial Profiling As a minority, have you ever been followed by a salesperson as you honestly browse through a store’s selections? Most situations like these are known as racial profiling. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, racial profiling is the “discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual's race, ethnicity, religion or national origin.” The races that are more likely to be followed, because of stereotypical beliefs that they are most likely to steal, are Hispanic and Black people. A 2004 Gallup poll on the subject said that 65% of Blacks and 56% of Hispanics believe that racial discrimination in
Ashley Lanuza, contributing student writer from San Gabriel Mission High School. by Ashley Lanuza
stores is widespread. It’s not a salesperson's responsibility to pick out ethnicities and stalk them around the store, but it’s a sense of paranoia and discrimination that alludes to such suspicion. We grow up into this society, believing in a double standard of equality and inequality. It forces us to think about ‘them’ and ‘us,’ from years of history and media stereotypes. By now, people think that racial equality stands, but there are still cases in which such equity is lacking. Racial profiling is such an intense topic within the Black community that researchers have coined the term “shopping while black” to explain how salespeople skillfully follow Black customers to make
sure they don’t steal. Typically, they would pretend to be rearranging products near the customer. As I’ve been watched by salespersons before, it’s an extremely uncomfortable and offensive situation and position to be victimized in. Salutes to those workers who are looking out for their products, but racial profiling is purely inappropriate and rude. Following a possible thief around the store should be reasoned on solid ground, like purely suspicious actions and behaviors. Pigeonholing a person based on their ethnicity is simply wrong and ignorant, and anyone victimized by such actions should report to a fair and higher authority.

If you must leave the building after the shaking stops, use stairs rather than an elevator in case there are aftershocks, power outages or other damage. • Be aware that fire alarms and sprinkler systems frequently go off in buildings during an earthquake, even
if there is no fire. If you are outside when the shaking starts … • Find a clear spot and drop to the ground. Stay there until the shaking stops (away from buildings, power lines, trees, streetlights). • If you are in a vehicle, pull over to a clear location and stop. Avoid bridges, overpasses and power lines if possible. Stay inside with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops. Then, drive carefully, avoiding bridges and ramps that may have been damaged. • If a power line falls on your vehicle, do not get out. Wait for assistance. • If you are in a mountainous area or near unstable slopes or cliffs, be alert for falling rocks and other debris. Landslides are often
triggered by earthquakes. ing and shifting of rock beneath the earth’s surface. Earthquakes strike suddenly, without warning, and they can occur at any time of the year, day or night. Fortyfive states and territories in the United States are at moderate to very high risk of earthquakes, and they are located in every region of the country. For more information on disaster and emergency preparedness, visit RedCross.org. • After an earthquake, the disaster may continue. Expect and prepare for potential aftershocks, landslides or even a tsunami. Tsunamis are often generated by earthquakes. • Each time you feel an aftershock, drop, cover and hold on. Aftershocks frequently occur minutes, days, weeks and even months following an earthquake. • Check yourself for injuries and get first aid, if necessary, before helping injured or trapped persons. • Put on long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, sturdy shoes and work gloves to protect against injury from broken objects. • Look quickly for damage in and around your home and get everyone out if your home is unsafe. • Listen to a portable,
battery-operated or handcrank radio for updated emergency information and instructions. • Check the telephones in your home or workplace to see if you can get a dial tone. Make brief calls to report life-threatening emergencies. • Look for and extinguish small fires. Fire is the most common hazard after an earthquake. • Clean up spilled medications, bleach, gasoline or other flammable liquids immediately. • Open closet and cabinet doors carefully as contents may have shifted. • Help people who require special assistance, such as infants, children and the elderly or disabled. • Watch out for fallen power lines or broken gas lines and stay out of damaged areas. • Keep animals under your direct control. • Stay out of damaged buildings. • If you were away from home, return only when authorities say it is safe to do so. Use extreme caution and examine walls, floors, doors, staircases and windows to check for damage. • Be careful when driving after an earthquake and anticipate traffic light outages.

San Pedro, Los Angeles Port – Navy Days 2014: August 10th, 2014 was a remarkable day for two young Cub Scouts from El Monte Troop 551, who made an unofficial tour, and had an opportunity to explore the USS
Spruance (US DDG 111), an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, which was docked in the Port of Los Angeles for Navy Days 2014. Before the tour started the Cubs Bear Degas and Webelos Roman had the opportunity to be apart of the Science, Technology, Electronics and Math Expo. On the S.T.E.M Expo tour portion of the port visit, Degas and Roman visited 12 STEM stations where Navy Sea Cadet spoke and showed videos about positions of the ship and how STEM can help their future. The Cubs spent spent 5-10 minutes in front of each of the 12 STEM messaging booths. The Cubs also watched detailed videos of the Navy’s assets in
action, missile launch, Helos landings, hoover crafts operating. Every 5-10 minutes, a whistle will sound and all groups will move down the line to the next STEM booth and a new message. The Cubs left the building with an understanding of the importance of a STEM education stay in school, study hard and that they should study S.T.E.M subjects in school to be better prepared to enter this ever changing world and compete in it. At the end of the STEM and Ship tour each kid received a STEM Reference Hand book. LTJG Michael Coppola provided a detailed guided tour of the USS Spruance (US DDG 111) and made it an astonishing experience and one that the Cubs will not forget. They were given a tour of the deck where the .50 caliber machine guns are mounted and used to thwart small craft attacks. They were shown the missile ports where Tomahawks and Cruise missiles are launched from. LTJG Coppola explained the gun system for the vessel and allowed us to

tour two of the many passageways that run on and below the ship. The boys particularly liked the radar guided gun systems mounted near the bow of the vessel.
The overall experience left quite an impression on the boys and gave them an insight into today’s modern Navy.

I remember when I played basketball my coaches, all of them, told me that the real work was in practice and playing the game was the reward. Kind of understood what they were talking about then, really understand what they were talking about now. Covering high school for the last 17 years, I can remember when there used to be these long periods where you would wait for a scrap of news. Now with the economics, loosening of the transfer rules, and the ramped up off season workout schedule I’ve come to realize the football season is the reward.

Dearth Wins Shootout by Sports Staff Writer Temple City
Recent Temple City High School graduate Cody Dearth won “The Shootout Leukemia Tournament” hosted by the South Bay X-Ring Archers on Saturday (August 23) in Palos Verdes. The tournament, to raise funds and awareness for Leukemia and Lymphoma, gave participating archers 45 arrows at a distance of 18 meters. Dearth, who also competed in the California State Games, won the outdoor event. He will be attending Citrus College this fall.

For the next 15 weeks we know when all the games are going to be played, we know who is playing who, and the story line works itself out before our very eyes. The off season is the work, the season itself is the reward. Sounds kind of morbid, but I really do enjoy reading the lists of players cut by NFL teams as they get ready for the football season. I mean, after all, a guy is losing his job but there is something about reading a familiar name being cut loose. “Oh my gosh! The Rams cut Lance Rentzel” “No way!” “It’s right here; ‘The Los Angeles Rams have released veteran wide receiver Lance Rentzel.’” Mid Bits (just like tidbits) ***Steven Nava has returned to the Rosemead football team. Should they sign Tim Tebow? ***Now that I’m back in third place...Fantasy Baseball doesn’t seem so bad right now. ***The Rams one more time. The Peterson Principle By Tim Peterson
So Tony Dungy and Phil Simms refuse to use the word Redskins when referring to the Washington franchise this year because they feel it is offensive. Now does this apply to all causes? What if announcers are opposed to the gay life style do they refuse to mention the name Michael Sam when working St. Louis Ram games? Do they say “that was a great play by number 96?” What if another is offended by players that have committed violence against women? Do they not mention Ray Rice’s name when announcing Baltimore Ravens contests? I can hear it now. “Number 27 for the Ravens has rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns!” This can go on and on. An announcer doesn’t like Mormons? It's a simple fix. Just allow him to not work any BYU games. Does Notre Dame get the silent treatment when an announcer is offended by Catholicism? And it’s not just football. Can you imagine a horse racing announcer that is offended by a particular horse’s name. “And down the stretch they come! The brown horse with the jockey dressed in red is making a move on the outside! And the brown horse wins by a nose! Yeah, the brown horse with the jockey dressed in red!” By not using the name Redskins Dungy and Simms are not doing their jobs. The team’s name, like it or not, is Redskins. When referring to that said team you refer to them by their nickname. And if you can’t do that then you should move on to another job. It has nothing to do with the name Redskins being offensive or not. It has everything to do with Simms and Dungy doing the job that they are being paid to do. And if they refuse to do the job then CBS and NBC respectively should relieve them of their duties. I expected Sam Bradford to go down at some point in the season. I just didn’t expect it to be in Augustand not for the year. At least he got injured before the Fantasy draft. Now nobody will get stuck with him. Breaking news! The 49ers finally scored a touchdown. However, it was with Blaine Gabbert at quarterback. I’m not used to seeing San Dimas HC Bill Zernickow that fired up. Maybe it’s because he’s usually up in the crow’s nest. Friday night in a scrimmage against Diamond Ranch

he was on the sideline and he was screaming at the defense, hollering at the offense and pumping up the players every chance he got. Every big play was met with a shout, a fist pump, or animated gesture. Maybe he should work the sideline more often. It all gets under way this week with some huge games on the docket. Arroyo at San Marino, Baldwin Park at El Monte, Bonita at Schurr and Burbank at Ayala are just a few of several games that we need to keep an eye on. What’s the blockbuster of the week? That would be Monrovia traveling to the aforementioned San Dimas to take on the Saints. Who wins? It’s tough to say. It might depend on where Zernickow is.
That's my principle. Tim can be reached at tim@ midvalleysports.com or on Twitter @tspeterson 40.

Summer Travels Cruising Alaska Continues: Glacier Bay to College Fjord by Jo Anne Disney College Fjord
The next stop on the Alaskan Cruise was College Fjord, a distance of 449 nautical miles from Glacier Bay. College Fjord has the bluest skies and pristine water that I have ever seen. History tells us that College Fjord was “discovered in the northwest corner of Prince William Sound during the 1899 research expedition” that was initiated by Edward H. Harriman, President of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Washington Academy of Sciences. It seems that Mr. Harriman’s doctor suggested he needed to relax and suggested sailing the seas. This sea voyage turned into an expedition party comprised of illustrious scientists, naturalists, writers and artists. “It was the Harriman Expedition party who named College Fjord as well as the glaciers that line it. The glaciers were named after the Ivy League Schools members of the party attended. Some of those glaciers “have retreated” since then, but “the largest of them, Harvard is still there in all of its splendor.” If you are lucky, you’ll have a chance to see and hear pieces of the magnificent glaciers fallings into the water. Also, there are humpback whales that make their appearance during the summer as well as sea otters. On our cruise we were able to see a couple of those amazing creatures. In experiencing College
Fjord, I can honestly say I have never seen such a place where snow-capped mountains and deep blue skies are the backdrop for the mighty glaciers. I would definitely say that College Fjord is like a “magical wonderland” that should not be missed. Our next stop: Whittier

Dog's Head Out the Car Window - A Dangerous Habit by Ann Kelly National
For most pups, the best part of a car ride is feeling the breeze in their furry faces as they stick their head out the window. Despite the feel good nature of this pleasurable experience, it's actually a very dangerous habit. In the early days of automobiles, most cars did not have windshields and their top speed was approximately 45 mph. Given those conditions, drivers wore goggles to protect their eyes. Now that we have windshields to protect us, you wouldn't consider sticking
your unprotected head out the window at 45 mph. Then why let your dog? Allowing your dog to let it stick its head out the window is a very dangerous habit. Their eyes are exposed to dirt, rocks, dust and other debris. These materials can easily puncture and scratch your dog's eyes. A line of pet goggles have come out which are to help prevent these types of injuries. However, even if you can train your dog not to paw them off his head, there are still many other dangers when your dog's head is out the window while driving. Damage to the ears is
another big concern. When the dog's ears flap in the wind, his soft ear flaps (pinnae) can easily become irritated, swell and become very tender. The constant and rapid flapping of the pinnae against your dog's head from high-speed winds causes trauma to the ear and results in swelling. Repeated trauma such as this can cause lifelong problems for your pup. Allowing your dog to stick its head out the window can also lead to more severe outcomes, such as falling out of the car or getting his head stuck in the window opening. Taking a turn a

Metro Corner LA Metro Asks for Public's Help in Recommendation for New Bike Share Pilot Program by Yessica Jovel Baldwin and West Covina
In efforts to jumpstart the shared use of bicycles for short distance trips, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) today announced it is seeking public suggestions on potential bike share locations in Downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Long Beach and Pasadena as part of a new pilot program. As the agency responsible for coordinating an interoperable countywide bike sharing implementation plan, Metro has developed an interactive Google map consisting of strategically placed bikeshare stations within the pilot cities where bicycles can be borrowed on a short-term basis. The map is available online at: http:// www.metro.net/bikes/bikesmetro/help-build-bikeshare/. Web site users can zoom into the map to view exact locations of proposed bike sharing stations. Users who know of a good location for a bikeshare station can then “pin it” on the map, and a new pin will appear in purple. If a location has already been suggested, the user can indicate that they ‘like’ it or submit their own input about the location by leaving a comment on the existing pin. Bikeshare stations are located near key destinations, including rail and bus stations that are within accessible distance of other bikeshare stations to help people make trips. Metro has limited the location of pins to areas that are exclusively within the
four pilot city areas. Users that have other suggestions for bikeshare locations can email them to bikeshare@ metro.net for consideration in subsequent program phases. Final bikeshare station locations will be determined by Metro, pilot cities and their bikeshare operator. Locations will be determined based on availability of space, right-of-way, disabled patron access, demand and other factors. Input will be accepted through September 8, 2014. “We're expanding our transportation options to reduce traffic and improve quality of life for everyone in L.A County,” said Los Angeles Mayor and Metro Board Chair Eric Garcetti. “We all want to get around more easily, and, with the public's help, we will build a regional bike share program that crosses city borders and gives us a new way to go from place to place.” Metro’s implementation plan team is studying business models that identify how user and advertising fees, corporate sponsorships, and/or grant funding can support bike share operations. As part of the pilot, Metro will coordinate closely with early adopter jurisdictions before completing its plan. Following completion, Metro will then move to procure, contract and administer the regional bikeshare program anticipated to launch in 2016. Santa Monica will be implementing a Metro grant-
funded bike share system of at least 350 bikes in anticipation of Expo Light Rail opening and in support of local and regional sustainability, transit access and congestion reduction goals. “The system is anticipated to be available in 2015, serving areas throughout Santa Monica and up to five locations in adjacent areas,” said Francie Stefan, Strategic and Transportation Planning Manager for the City of Santa Monica. “Coordination with Metro, local and sub- regional partners are supporting integrated implementation so that the system is of greatest benefit to users.” “The City of Pasadena is excited to partner with Metro in advancing a bike share program that will provide increased access to our Gold Line stations and our many local destinations,” said Mark Yamarone, Transportation Planning Administrator for Pasadena. “Bike sharing is an important component in helping Pasadena meet its goal to be a city where people can circulate without a car.” Bike share programs throughout the United States have proven successful in providing people with first and last-mile short trip transportation options that help reduce local vehicle trips. When complemented with transit, these bike sharing platforms help reduce travel times, improve access and spur the growth of bicycling as an increasingly viable transportation mode. For additional information about bike sharing or Metro’s Bike Program, visit www.metro.net/bikes.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you
should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-730-2727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http:// www.qualityloan.com , using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-13-598745-JP . Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. Part One: Diagon Alley Arrives to Universal Studios Orlando by Glen Maldonado Orlando
Harry Potter at Universal Orlando has expanded, this time in Universal Studios Orlando. What was once Amity area and Jaws ride in Universal Studios Orlando is now Diagon Alley and home of two rides, Escape from Gringotts, and Hogwarts Express. Construction for the new area began when Jaws area was closed on January 2nd 2012. May 8th 2013 was the official announcement from Universal but by then they were well into construction. Diagon alley was softly opened on July 3rd but official opened on July 8th 2014. In its grand opening Harry Potter film stars Helena Bonham Carter (portrays Bellatrix Lestrange), Tom Felton (portrays Draco Malfoy), Matthew Lewis (portrays Neville Longbottom) and Warwick Davis (portrays Griphook) attended the grand opening and got to witness the magic of Diagon Alley before us muggles. So what is in Diagon Alley? Diagon Alley is filled with incredible entertainment experiences for the whole family. The new area includes incredible shops with windows full of magical surprises, authentic food and beverages. Leaky Cauldron is a restaurant featuring authentic British foods in a pub style. Ollivanders
is a shop straight out of the books of Harry Potter and it’s the shop were Harry got his own wand. Come in and witness the power and show of picking a perfect wand for yourself. I myself bought a Dumbledore wand and it features an IR transmitter that lets you interact with some objects in Diagon Alley and Hogsmead. Another
great store that I enjoyed was Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes which just like the movie, features many treats and tricks that were seen in the movie or book. The one thing you first notice when entering Diagon is in the center of the alley, where there is a giant dragon on top of a building.

Los Tigres del Norte is comprised of the Hernandez brothers: Jorge, Hernan, Eduardo, Luis, and their cousin Oscar Lara. The band is a legend in the norteño music genre. Nortenõ is a genre of regional Mexican music that notably features the accordion and bajo sexto instruments. The music of Los Tigres del Norte has transcended generations, with grandparents and grandchildren alike sharing a love of their music. The band, which hails from the Mexican state of

Sinaloa, began in the late 1960’s and has spanned four decades. Los Tigres have recorded over 500 songs to date. Several of their most popular hits include La Jaula de Oro, Jefe de Jefes, and Contrabando Y Traición.
Arriving with their families to the Walk of Fame ceremony, each member of Los Tigres Del Norte was presented with a certificate and a plaque honoring their contributions to the music recording industry.
Fans cheered on as the group posed with their star, cementing their status as innovators of norteño music and legends of the regional Mexican music genre.
