ing First Aid, CPR and water safety,” said El Monte Councilman Juventino “J” Gomez. “It also gives them a chance to spend their summer working alongside real lifeguards, seeing them in action and learning what they do to help save lives. It’s exciting that our kids fully embrace the program and rigors that come with it.” Candidates for the program were required to have the ability to swim 50 yards, tread water for one minute and swim under water for 10 yards during a skill pre-test at the Aquatic Center. Aside from teaching fitness and swimming skills, the program is also aimed at educating participants on how to prevent aquatic accidents, respond in an emergency situation, and develop leadership skills and professionalism as a lifeguard. Among the many activities scheduled, participants are learning how to perform CPR, shadowed a professional lifeguard and took trips to Huntington Beach, the Santa Fe Dam and Raging Waters to experience various types of lifeguard environments.

WEBB'S RULES Poor Old Kenny

By Andrew Paul Bettridge

by Eugene R. Webb

With partly cloudy skies and a late sunset racers zoomed into the sunset all night long trying to beat their friend or win the daily bracket, " King of The Hill ". Won & Done show returns to filming this Thursday, July 18th with gates opening at 12 p.m. and racing starting at 2:30 p.m. until10p.m." Come on out and run what you brung."

My friend Kenny was just standing in a R.V. Park; He was on vacation and happy as a lark. Now Kenny was just looking around; When he spied a dog walking on the ground. Then the dog peed on his custom made shoe; Poor old Kenny didn't know what to do. Three days later on a ship coming from Mexico; Some dog came sniffing his shoe & wouldn't go. Some men came over and said "come with us"; Boy did they make a real big fuss. They took Kenny to a little room; There they lowered the boom. They thought he had drugs in his shoe; Because it was built-up an inch or two. Kenny kept yelling, "Don't tear my shoe apart"; As up in his throat went his heart. Now he knew these men weren't playing a game; And he thought he'd never be the same. For they searched him from head-to-toe; Kenny wondered if they'd ever let him go.

El Monte City Council to Consider Rent Control Law El Monte

Following the release of an economic study that revealed that Brookside Mobile County Club is charging residents exorbitant rents, the El Monte City Council will consider adopting a rent control ordinance at its Aug. 6 meeting. "This is a positive step forward for mobile home owners who have long been subjected to drastic rent increases that, in some cases, have imperiled their very livelihoods,” said Mayor Pro Tem Norma Macias, who has been a champion of the issue for nearly two years. “This is also an important, long-term solution to stopping price gouging and protecting our residents from those who prey on them and their vulnerability.” During the November 2012 election, El Monte voters passed Measure F, the "El Monte Fairness for Mobilehome Owners Ordinance," which repealed a 1990 voter-approved ordinance that bars the City Council from regulating rental levels in mobile home parks. The approval put into motion a comprehensive study that exposed the need for the City of El Monte to step in and protect the community’s most vulnerable residents. Los Angelesbased land economics and real estate consulting firm Waronzof Associates, Inc. conducted a comprehensive

by Chelsea Dickerson

economic and demographic study of mobile home parks in the City. According to the study – which provides insight into housing affordability, tenure, living conditions, economic needs of parks for operation, capital improvements and competitive return on investment – about 48 percent of those living in the park and are below the age of 55 are impoverished. Brookside residents were found to be paying 51 to 71 percent higher rents than the equivalent apartment rent space. A 2012 survey, which did not include Brookside, showed the average rent paid in El Monte’s mobile home parks was $488 per space a month. In contrast, the 2013 City tenant survey found Brookside rents to average $1,322 per space a month, with a high of $1,633 per space a month. The passage of Measure F restored certain powers to the City Council that would enable members to inquire into the fairness of rents being charged at mobile home parks in El Monte and consider measures to protect affordable housing resources within parks, including rent control. On June 18, the City Council extended an urgency ordinance that imposed a moratorium on pending or new rent increases on mobile home park rents

of $1,000 or more to Sept. 29 to allow for permanent regulatory action. The ordinance also prevented mobile home park owners from requiring tenants or prospective tenants to enter into any park space rental agreement that has not been subject to rent stabilization regulations. Using information from the study to formulate the new law, the City Council on July 16 directed staff to prepare an ordinance that establishes a review board to consider rent increases and appeals. “When voters passed Measure F, they voted for skyrocketing rents to end,” Macias said. “Setting up a new ordinance to regulate how high rent at mobile home parks can be before they become excessive and begin to take advantage of residents, who often live on fixed incomes, is imperative to addressing home owners’ concerns in a fair and just manner.” City staff is preparing a Mobilehome Park Rent Stabilization Ordinance for public hearing and consideration at the Aug. 6 City Council meeting. The Planning Commission will also consider a proposed mobile home park conversion ordinance at a special Aug. 13 meeting.

MacArthur Park …. Located on the westernmost part of Los Angeles, the park was built from a salt marsh in 1890. Appropriately named Westlake, it was renamed for the popular general in 1942. Wilshire Boulevard bisects the park, which originally stopped at its border by a causeway which was completed in 1941. The causeway was originally built by rival merchant groups. The western group wanted direct access to downtown Los Angeles while the eastern group was fearful of losing business to the Wilshire Boulevard establishment. Ultimately, access was allowed to flow through from the east to the west. …First Freeways….. The 8.2 mile Pasadena Freeway was the first freeway in California. Connecting Los Angeles with Pasadena, the freeway opened in December 1940 and had its first traffic jam three days later when Rose Bowl traffic clogged the express. Today, it is considered too tight and curvy, with no place for emergencies. By contrast, the San Diego Freeway is eight-lanes across and is expansive enough to carry the large volume of traffic that travels to the westside each day. The freeway system was planned in 1959, and covered 350 miles by the mid 60’s and then reached 1,500 miles in 1980. Today, the system continues to grow with express lanes, metro lines and expansions to the north, east and south. …. LA Zoo …. The first large zoo in modern times to be built and planned from scratch was the LA Zoo in Griffith Park. It opened in 1966 with enclosements for 3,200 animals and 3,500 cars. The zoo sits on 110-acres of barren land. Full-grown trees were replanted on the zoo property. The trees had been removed from the path of the newly built freeways…. Summer Festivals…. The Hollywood Bowl, opened in 1921, has been the home of countless musical performances. Originally a bandstand in the center of a weedy dell, the amphitheater now can hold in excess of 20,000 for one event and

Temple City

over 30,000 for a summer….. Playhouse…. The Pasadena Playhouse, a theater and school for dramatic arts may hold the record for continuous performances. The playhouse started in 1916 and moved to its current location in 1925. More significant plays have been shown and produced in the theater than any other venue. The California State Legislature named the playhouse the State Theater in 1937…. Railroads…. In 1885, the Santa Fe Railroad first arrived in Los Angeles and was welcomed with brass bands playing an assortment of songs. The Santa Fe was not planning to connect to Los Angeles but decided to compete with the Southern Pacific for western bound passengers. The competition reduced the fares from Missouri from $100 to $25, and was even $1 on a certain days. The two railroads brought hundreds of thousands of settlers into the Los Angeles area, many of which held land options with their railroad ticket….

This is a 20 million dollar project with one million by the city and 19 million funded through 14 different Federal, State, and County agencies. The actual construction costs are about 13 million with the balance going to engineering and design. This project will provide

If you give them 2 years to finish a 18 month project they will take the 2 years and work on other projects. Temple City is fortunate to have Carl Blum and Vince Yu ramrodding this project. Carl in his position with the County did this for a living, and Vince brings his architect skills. Collectively, they have had over 80 meetings bringing this project to fruition. Also, City Manager Jose Pulido brings his skills after going through the same thing in San Fernando.

Gondolas and Castagnas - Part 2 " The Sea Rebel " Dwain Crum “The Sea Rebel," was born in Pasadena, CA and a lifelong resident of Rosemead, CA. Retired after 29 years as a history teacher at Rosemead High School. Dwain is fulfilling a lifelong dream of traveling around the world. Italy was the birthplace of my grandmother Fiorentina Cravea. Now, 99 years after she left, I would be visiting the place she left behind. She was born in the village of Murialdo, located not far from the great seaport of Genoa. Genoa is perhaps most well known as the birthplace of famed explorer Christopher Columbus. My cousin Bruna and her husband would be taking me to Murialdo, but first there were other parts of Italy to explore. From Venice, we would be traveling westward to the city of Verona. While traveling in Fabio's Alfa Romeo Giulietta, he pointed out the fact that Verona is a much older city than Venice. Verona was an

important city of the Roman Empire, while Venice was not. I had never thought of Venice as a relatively new city - but compared to Rome, Verona and even London, it is. Verona is the setting for two of Shakespeare's plays, " Two Gentlemen " from " Verona " and of course the even more famous " Romeo and Juliet." The old Roman Arena still located there rivals the Coliseum of Rome. However, it is the statue of Juliet (Giulietta in Italian) and its nearby balcony that most tourist flock. Like everyone else I had my photo taken with the statue of Giulietta. It was perhaps my meal in Verona that I remember the most. My Italian cousins

took me to a wonderful Osteria in Verona called Giulietta e Romeo (Well, what

• Dwain C. Crum •

would call a restaurant in Verona?). This restaurant caters more to the locals than to the tourists and features many local delicacies. Bruna and Fabio's son Marco had both the donkey meat and the braised horse meat (I kid you not) and

as for me --- I had the pasta! We then headed to one of actor George Clooney's favorite places, Lake Como. My photo blog - http:// searebelcolon.tumblr.com

FANVIEW By Joe Torosian “It's fourth and fifteen and you're looking at a full-court press.”--- Lt. Frank Drebin There are a lot of things that are powerful in sports. The underdog coming back to win a game it had no business being in at all. That’s powerful stuff. The champion fighting off challenge after challenge to stay on top a year later. Perfection in performance is amazing. I never hated the 49ers the way I hated the Cowboys or the Vikings back in the day. I never hated them the way I hate the Saints now, but I sure didn’t root for them. Yet every time I watched the 49ers play with Joe Montana at quarterback I always thought I was watching the greatest of artists at work. When he dismantled teams (including my Rams) you couldn’t help but watch in awe. Steve Young was a great quarterback, but he just never came across to me as something beyond the capacity of somebody that worked hard. You could work hard and become Steve Young...but you had to be born, divinely imbued, to be Joe Montana. This is why Magic Johnson is still greater than anything you see in the NBA today. This is why he was greater than Michael Jordan. Cut Jordan open and you find a human heart. Cut Johnson open and you find a heart shaped like a basketball. Only ignorance compares a very good Lebron James to Magic Johnson. I haven’t spoked about former Rosemead standout Joe Silva in years, but the three consecutive plays he made against El Monte in the Lions centennial game back in 2001 is something I never forgot. EM was inside the Panthers ten, trailing 12-7, when Silva made three straight defensive plays to help secure the win. Goosebumps. In 1973 Harold Jackson grabbed four John Hadl passes for touchdowns in the Rams 37-31 win over the Cowboys...It still gives me chills. Sports is great, but perhaps the most powerful is gratitude. This is why I watch the NFL Hall of Fame induction speeches faithfully. I love hearing gratitude. When Cris Carter said in his induction speech how sorry he was to the Ohio State

fans for signing with a sports agent and missing his senior year I was amazed. It was his big day, it was his big moment, no one was demanding this, but Carter’s apology was tremendous....and one of the greatest things I’ve ever, ever, seen in sports. joe@midvalleysports.com

Local Lady XC Runners to Watch in 2013 The next cross country season set to begin in September. It comes with stars and powerhouses, and here’s a brief glimpse at the young ladies who will be getting up early, and running late... In a good way. Arcadia has been the local powerhouse in the area seemingly since the Pilgrims crossed the Atlantic on the Mayflower. The Apaches return seniors Veronica Yamane and Meghan Kamae, junior Laura Guidolin, and super sophomore Alyssa Hopf. Arroyo has a pair of strong runners back in the fold with Adrean Seanez and Destiny

Reyes. Staying alphabetically correct, Roxanne Valle a junior out of Azusa High School might be on the edge of our

coverage zone, but she is one of the strongest runners (not enrolled at Arcadia) coming back in 2013 and bears watching. Monrovia has talent in Mara Arementa, a senior, and in a set of juniors, Emma McGin-

nis and Kaylee Johnson. The Wildcats Rio Hondo League counter part Temple City brings back Christine Chen and Franceska Millanponce, both juniors. Monette La, senior, is back as well. Outside of Arroyo in the Mission Valley League the strength of cross country talent comes from both Rosemead and Gabrielino. The Lady Panthers bring back senior Mirtha Lopez and junior Ivon Ruiz. The Lady Eagles will challenge with Xin Yi Tan, a senior, and Sharon Khoo, a junior.

Graduation always brings change, but to football fans, quite often, it can bring a sobering reality. The reality being that your “guy” is gone. So El Monte is going to have to find life after Brandon Martinez, Blake Heyworth has moved on from Monrovia after leading the Wildcats to consecutive titles, and Levi Wells has departed from South El Monte...Just to name a few. Who is left standing? Arroyo’s Nathan Coto and Gabrielino’s Elijah Peters. Both players led their teams to winning records in 2012, and both are expected to be key ingredients as they expect to compete in the Mission Valley League and

beyond. Coto, a senior, will always be known as the guy who followed Steven Rivera at Arroyo. However, in a season that saw Coto go through some growing pains to learn his craft it came together late. Coto led the Knights to their first road victory in the post-season since 2004 when they defeated Bell Gardens in the first round and then nearly engineered an upset in the second round against defending state champion Sierra Canyon. His off season has been tremendous and the Arroyo faithful are expecting a special year out of Coto. For Peters there was no post season glory, but the Tongva Nation can take pride in their first winning season in nine years. Early in its history Gabrielino had been a high school known for developing quarterbacks from Kevin Trochez, to Jeremy Sanchez, and Paul Zuniga. Peters 14 touchdown passes in 2012 drove the

Eagles to a 7-3 record and he was only a sophomore. Now heading into his junior season with a big target in Jeremy Franco returning, expectations are high. Between the two passers Peters is taller at 6-2, but Coto has the edge as a runner, with a thicker build, the Arroyo quarterback rushed for 444 yards and six touchdowns. Peters didn’t do too bad with 214 yards on the ground and five touchdowns. With El Monte, South El Monte, Rosemead, and Mt. View looking at new passers these two figure to give their teams the edge this upcoming season. Gabrielino travels to Bergstrom Stadium to play Arroyo on October 11th.

The Peterson Principle By Tim Peterson

You have got to love the Montview this year. We broke it down last Tuesday night on the Mid Valley Sports Show and the three of us there had three different opinions as to who would win league. Sports Editor Joe Torosian likes Bassett, Show Producer/Staffer Duane Barker went with Azusa and I picked La Puente. First of all you know it's a different league when Bassett is one of the teams being considered for the championship. When was the last time that happened? Torosian is going with the Olympians and although I like LP, it's not an outrageous pick. Hector Spathias and Jerry Urias have breathed life into a team that has only experienced losing for over a decade. There's a new excitement at Bassett that is hard to ignore. Keep and eye on sophomore running back Ricky Mejia and senior quarterback Nick Colmenero. The offense can score and with no real dominant team in the Montview, the Olympians have a shot. Did you know Bassett had four players last year gain at least 300 yards or more on the ground? But that's what makes the league so interesting. There's no powerhouse. We agreed that Gladstone lost everybody last year including the scorekeepers and head coach, Albert Sanchez. That might be a little too much to overcome. Also, Workman and Ganesha are in rebuilding mode and figure to finish near the bottom of the pack. That takes care of those three but when you look at the top five, it's hard to pick a clear cut winner. Azusa has quarterback Jose Ledesma back as well as receiver, Carlos Montiel and running back, Cameron Blackburn. The Aztecs also have Joe Scherf, who until last year, had not lost a league game since he was the head coach. La Puente has a new coach in Scott Morrison but the Warriors have a lot of talent returning. Jacob Tovar steps in for the graduated Ivan Vasquez and TE Julian Lantada and LB Robert Angulo bring a lot to the table. Receiver Jose Ochoa gives Tovar a nice target. Does Duarte stand a chance? With the athletes the Falcons, they always have a chance and Jason Martin, now in his second year, has

the players beginning to buy in. Linemen Alberto Pina and Angel Villanueva will plow the road and skill guys like Samuel Edwards, Devyn Washington and Davante Robinson gives Martin plenty of options. Martin also likes the progression of quarterback, Isaiah Scott. People forget Sierra Vista finished 5-2 in league last year and made the playoffs. Yes the Dons were bounced in the first round...by Northwest champ Nordhoff. Rumors that Head Coach Don LeGro stepped down turned out to be just that...rumors. LeGro is back as is running back Lee Jones, who rushed for over 1900 yards last year. You want a great name? How about Sierra Vista TE/ LB Adonis Miranda Belt. There's a name to remember. He's good, too. The Dons aren't a marquee team, especially when it comes to winning the league title, but would it really be shocking if they knocked off LP or Azusa? In an eight team league there are only three nonleague games, so they will be beating each other up every week. Nobody's safe in the Mountview. Monrovia is just the latest team that we've been charged of “homering” for. I don't recall providing any more coverage of the Wildcats than we usually do in the summer but the truth is three straight CIF championships sometimes warrants more coverage. It also brings about more haters. Everybody outside of Monrovia hates the Wildcats but I wonder if they would feel the same way if Monrovia wasn't holding up the trophy every year. Don't be bitter, be better. Just a thought. That's my principle. Tim can be reached at tim@ midvalleysports.com.

On this date in 2009 the Colorado Rockies beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 in front of 46,118 fans at Coors field. Taking the hill the ninth inning for the Cubs was lefthanded reliever John Grabow (San Gabriel Class of 1997). He faced five hitters, got a strikeout, and put up a goose egg. Grabow put together a solid nine year MLB career that saw him play in 506 games and compile a 24-19

record as a middle reliever for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs. He

struck out 400 hitters, against only 220 walks, using a fastball, slider, and one of the game’s better change ups. A third round pick of the Pirates after a three-year varsity career for San Gabriel, where he was named all CIF and Almont League MVP in 1997, Grabow was signed by the Dodgers to a minor league contract in 2011 but opted before pitching with the team in 2012.

Building a Relationship with Your Child's Teacher Matters

National

Children are mom and dad’s top priority, and parents want to give them every advantage in the world to succeed. But with all the time kids spend at school, parents cannot do it alone. That’s why it’s important for the most influential adults in a child’s life to team up on a common goal. Parents should cultivate relationships with their child’s teacher early, so they can work together toward the child’s success. There are several ways for parents to build a relationship with their kid’s teacher. Introduce Yourself Don’t wait until there is a problem before meeting the teacher. Introduce yourself as soon as possible -- ideally before the stresses of the school year are in full swing. It doesn’t have to be a long conversation -- just one to let

National

the teacher know who you are and that you are interested in your child’s education. Show Appreciation All kids and their parents have a teacher they admire and want to thank. Taking a few minutes to share these sentiments is important and can be easy. For example, Cheerios has a new “Send Cheer to Teachers” program that makes it simple to thank favorite teachers. Parents can show gratitude, support and appreciation by simply cutting a special postcard for teachers from specially-marked boxes of Cheerios cereal, writing a personal message, and sharing a short note of thanks. A few kind words can go a long way. Spend Time In today’s economy, many schools are stretched thin for resources. School systems are increasing class sizes and

slashing budgets. Parents who have time can offer to help out. Whether it is chaperoning school trips, preparing items for a fundraiser or just donating old books to the classroom, this kindness will go a long way toward solidifying the parent-teacher relationship. Help with Supplies Teachers spend on average $398 of their own money on supplies and resources, and 92 percent of teachers use their own money to provide supplies for their students, according to the National School Supply and Equipment Association. Through a General Mills program called Box Tops for Education, parents can earn cash for their kid’s school by clipping Box Tops coupons from participating products. In addition, from August to October, you can enter the

unique code from inside specially-marked Cheer-card

Cheerios boxes online to earn one bonus eBoxTops credit for your school. And through a new Cheerios Send Cheer to Teachers sweepstakes, parents can enter

for a chance to win a $20,000 prize package or one of four $5,000 prize packages made up of bonus Box Tops and supplies for their child’s school. Complete details and rules, can be found at www.btfe. com/sendcheer. Getting to know their teachers is the best way to take an interest in children’s education. Even when they aren’t around, parents can make a difference in the classroom.

Dog's Head Out the Car Window A Dangerous Habit

by Sherry Burdic

For most pups, the best part of a car ride is feeling the breeze in their furry faces as

dangerous habit. In the early days of automobiles, most cars did not

they stick their head out the window. Despite the feel good nature of this pleasurable experience, it's actually a very

have windshields and their top speed was approximately 45 mph. Given those conditions, drivers wore goggles to

protect their eyes. Now that we have windshields to protect us, you wouldn't consider sticking your unprotected head out the window at 45 mph. Then why let your dog? Allowing your dog to let it stick its head out the window is a very dangerous habit. Their eyes are exposed to dirt, rocks, dust and other debris. These materials can easily puncture and scratch your dog's eyes. A line of pet goggles have come out which are to help prevent these types of injuries. However, even if you can train your dog not to paw them off his head, there are still many other dangers when your dog's head is out the window while driving. Damage to the ears is another big concern. When the dog's ears flap in the wind, his soft ear flaps (pinnae) can easily become irritated, swell and become very tender. The constant and rapid flapping of the pinnae against your dog's head from high-speed winds causes trauma to the ear and results in swelling. Repeated trauma such as this can cause lifelong problems for your pup.

Allowing your dog to stick its head out the window can also lead to more severe outcomes, such as falling out of the car or getting his head stuck in the window opening. Taking a turn a bit too fast, traveling over bumpy terrain or an overly excited pup can cause your dog to lose balance and easily fall out of the window. These types of incidents occur more frequently than one might imagine and can cause severe injury or death to dogs. It should go without saying; but another very dangerous idea is to allow your dog to ride in the bed of a pickup truck. All of the dangers of sticking its head out the window from inside the car are increased,

since the bed of a pickup offers little or no protection from wind, debris, or falls. In addition, a pickup's metal bed can reach dangerously high temperatures on hot days, which can cause damage to the soft tissue on a dog's paws. The best place for your dog to ride is in the back seat or cargo area of your vehicle, properly restrained of course. Utilizing a pet safety belt, car seat, vehicle pet barrier, or a travel crate is the best ways to ensure that your pup's trav-

els are happy and safe. Sure, crack the window, but no heads out!

San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership on the Proposed National Recreation Area

Coming Soon: AROUND THE VALLEY

Irwindale

The San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership has issued a Statement of Principles outlining the Partnership's key concerns about the proposed San Gabriel Valley National Recreation Area. While the Partnership supports the recreation area in concept, there are many details that must be clarified and resolved about how this new designation would affect local businesses and communities. "A National Recreation Area has the potential to be a tremendous resource for the Valley if it's set up right," said Cynthia Kurtz, President and CEO of the Partnership. "It could provide funding for new parks, help us maintain or upgrade existing parks, and develop new recreation facilities. But a lot of questions remain about its boundaries, who exactly is going to run it, and how it would affect

by Brad Jensen

the rights of businesses, cities, and water agencies." The Partnership's Legislative Action Committee unanimously approved the Statement of Principles at their monthly meeting yesterday. The Committee members represent businesses, chambers of commerce, city governments, water, transit and other public agencies, and non-profit organizations. The Committee studies critical policy issues facing the region and takes political positions on behalf of the Partnership. The Statement details the Partnership's primary concerns with the National Recreation Area, among which is land acquisition by the National Parks Service. While the Parks Service may acquire land by purchase, exchange or donation, the Partnership believes the agency should recompense cities for the

loss of potential tax revenues that that property could have generated. The Statement also requests that the recreation area boundaries be finalized when the draft legislation is released to the public, that full access for fire fighters and water maintenance crews to the San Gabriel Mountains be assured, and that local elected officials be appointed to manage the recreation area. The National Recreation Area can only be created by an act of Congress. Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-Pasadena) is currently writing the enabling legislation. "Congresswoman Judy Chu and her staff have been extremely responsive on this issue," Kurtz said. "They're listening and taking these concerns very seriously. This is going to be a complex piece of legislation."

Pomona Unified and the Power of Cooperative Purchasing

Pomona

The L.A. County Fair won’t be the only attraction in Pomona this fall. Three high schools in the Pomona Unified School District will showcase newly renovated stadiums in August, and all three will feature AstroTurf® synthetic fields. Pomona, Garey, and Diamond Ranch High Schools are each set to kick off their 2013 football seasons with the premier artificial playing surface underfoot. Construction at all three high school athletic facilities broke ground simultaneously back in May. Brian Watt of LCC3 Construction Services, a leading contractor for public facilities design and build, is serving as the construction manager on the $16 million project. Mr. Watt’s experience and expertise are on display, as the substantial project is slated for completion in August – a miniscule three month turnaround. Installation of the new AstroTurf fields began June 28th , right on schedule. Each of the three new stadiums will be outfitted with the AstroTurf GameDay Grass™ 3D60H synthetic turf system, the company’s signature playing surface. It’s the same artificial grass used by The Home Depot Center in the last two CIF Championships, and can be found in numerous stadiums and practice facilities throughout Division I college football and the NFL. The 3D product is routinely commended for its excellence across the full spectrum of turf performance, including speed, consistency, safety and appearance. “We are excited to continue fos-

by Sydney Squires

tering a positive relationship with California high school athletics,” said AstroTurf President Bryan Peeples. “It’s an honor to see these young student athletes get an opportunity to compete on AstroTurf, which is considered to be the finest synthetic surface in the world." The opportunity to upgrade some of the district’s athletic facilities was first made possible by a voterapproved bond measure passed in 2008. After careful consideration PUSD decided on a proposal to transform the three athletic fields into modest stadiums, a project geared at enhancing community spirit and student interest as much as improving infrastructure. The occasion to select a state-ofthe-art synthetic turf for the new facilities came about as the result of both AstroTurf and PUSD’s involvement with The Cooperative Purchasing Network. TCPN is a national co-op which facilitates the acquisition of commonly purchased items, such as artificial turf. TCPN’s lead agency, Region 4 Education Center in Texas, solicits competitive bids, evaluates them, and awards contracts to vendors after thorough scrutiny of the vendors’ price, past performance, resources, and more. By allowing public entities such as schools and municipalities to legally and efficiently procure the quality products they need from vetted vendors, TCPN eliminates the hassle and redundancy of the local bidding process. This streamlined method saves TCPN registrants like PUSD valuable time, money, and resources that would otherwise be

spent conducting a local bid. What makes this AstroTurf surface a next generation field is that it combines the innovative features of the Horseshoe™ fiber with AstroTurf’s patented RootZone® technology. The monofilament Horseshoe fiber has an omega shape, which is more resilient and bounces back, helping it stay upright longer. Perhaps the most vital component of the 3D system is the RootZone®, a proprietary technology invented, patented, and improved upon by AstroTurf. It is an infill stabilization system comprised of a thatch layer of textured nylon that radically reduces both infill migration and deep cleat penetration – contributing to a faster, more consistent playing surface with a cleaner look. But perhaps most importantly, the RootZone complements the GameDay Grass 3D engineering to create a synthetic turf system that is proven by independent studies to reduce torque on knees. Although primarily designated for football, the AstroTurf field will also be lined for soccer use. The company is no stranger to the pitch. They are an approved FIFA provider and have installed several FIFA one and two star fields throughout the world, from Vancouver to Beijing. In August of last year they partnered with CalSouth to become the official synthetic turf provider of the leading youth and adult soccer membership association in the United States.
