Around Town by Mavis Hansen Around Town had a great vacation and I hope that yours was, too. Even though summer is officially here until September 23, 2015, which is shown in the calendar as the First Day of Autumn, for most students who have already returned to school, summer is over! Neighborhood Libraries were a wonderful place to visit during the summer, nice and cool and something for everyone. What a great help, not only to students, but to anyone who does not have their own computer. Many of the libraries offer a variety of programs, entertaining and/or educational. Be sure and visit your own neighborhood library soon. We will soon be racing toward the holiday season, but before Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, we can celebrate Labor Day on Monday, September 7, 2015. This holiday for the working people began on September 5, 1882 with a parade in New York City. In 1884, the holiday was moved to its current day, the first Monday in September. For many, the day is observed with parades, labor-group meetings, picnics and sporting events. Many like to stay at home, relax, watch TV and B-B-Q and of course for some, it means a three day holiday. However you celebrate, enjoy and have a wonderful day. Many service clubs and organizations, which were dark during the summer months, will once again start meeting this month. One of the largest organizations for women (men may also join) is the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, which incorporates State, National and International clubs. The San Gabriel Valley District has 26 clubs and 1200 members. Most clubs have a General Membership Meeting (business, program and some include lunch) once a month. The El Monte W.C. meets on the 4th Tuesday. Wednesday’s are a busy day for the clubs: Arcadia W.C. and W.C. of South Pasadena on the 1st Wednesday, Sierra Madre W.C. and Monterey Park W.C. all meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. The 1st Thursday of the month is also a busy day (and evening) for club meetings: Duarte W.C. (evening), Montebello W.C. and East Valley W.C. (evening). On the 1st Friday of the month both Baldwin Park W.C. and West Covina

W.C. meet. Pasadena W.C. meets on the 3rd Friday and all clubs come together for a San Gabriel Valley District Meeting on the 2nd Friday of each month, September thru June. All clubs follow the guidelines, Standing Rules and By-Laws set down by the California State and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. 16 of the 26 clubs boast over 100 years of community service. The GFWC California Federation of Women’s Clubs is part of an international community service organization which provides education, training and interaction opportunities for volunteers who are committed to individual growth and community improvement to enrich the quality of life throughout California and the world. Women who are interested in volunteer service to the community and others and would like information on membership, or would just like to attend a club meeting as a guest, may contact the District Membership Chairman Zita Rodriguez at 562-942-7832 or Email zita5509@yahoo. com. Ms. Rodriguez will be glad to answer your questions and give you information on clubs in your area. Interested in gardening? Need help or advice? El Monte Friend O’Garden Club will meet this Friday, September 4, 2015 at the Norwood Library community room, 4550 N. Peck Road, El Monte. Meetings begin at 11:30 AM. Bring your own brown bag lunch, coffee and dessert provided. There is no charge and guests are always welcome. Have a great day…see you soon, someplace AROUND TOWN

Grow Up, Scout Finches of the World

A few weeks ago, I had discussed the publication of “Go Set a Watchman” by the American classic novelist, Harper Lee. “Go Set A Watchman” was supposed to be published prior to “To Kill a Mockingbird,” but Lee’s editors had convinced her to write and publish “TKAM” first- and for good reason. Fans of “Mockingbird” associated themselves with young Scout Finch. We met Boo Radley, had great times with Jem and Dill, and associated ourselves with Atticus like he was our own father. “Watchmen” breaks these illusions. It revisits the past to rewrite the present- and on this journey, we are alone. The audience learns to grow with Scout by accepting change, understanding prejudices, and realizing human imperfections. Many fans are bitter and

Ashley Lanuza, contributing student writer from San Gabriel Mission High School.

angry for the changes found in the pristine image of Atticus Finch and Maycomb County. I am, however, satisfied. The overall message of the novel isn’t to impress perfection on a certain character, but realizing that not all people are perfecteven the ones we look up to. It’s a taste of real life in this realistic fiction- we must be solely ourselves and understand that we’re equal in that right. The wholeness of an individual undermines the dependent relationships people make to an inspiration. This message rings true to everyone because celebrities, internet personalities, moguls, and family and friends are as human as you, so their status doesn’t make them any more perfect than you are. Scout’s Uncle Jack admitted it’s hard to hate a man like Atticus, but the realization of his im-

perfections makes Scout- I mean, Jean Louise- a whole and growing character. I had a friend who feared reading “Watchmen” due to previous scrutiny of the novel’s take on “Mockingbird’s” characters, but I find it refreshing. As I grow older, I identify with Jean Louise’s own growth as she returns to Maycomb. Change is terrifying and the demolition of a once-perfect character is heartbreaking- but it’s so human and so real, that it is necessary for the journey to selfhood. We must break the illusions of our past before we can build ourselves up for a better present. I hope that you read “Go Set a Watchmen.” It’s an amazing novel, and if you had read “To Kill a Mockingbird,” this two-layered journey will resonate well with yours, I promise.

FAMILY by Eugene R. Webb

We're all looking for a lot of love; That's what a real family is full of. The word "Family" should give us a clue; It does say, "Father and Mother I Love You". Look how each letter spelled like no other; F stands for Father, A for And, M for Mother, I for I, L for Love, and Y for You. But there's a lot more what a family can do. A family consists of a loving Father and Mother; Showing their children the love for one another. A mutual admiration with feelings deep and strong; Making each person feel that they really do belong. All families are what makes the world go round; At least that is what most people have found. A family lives in a house that's a home they share; With joy, love, hope, sorrow and dreams living there. It can be a wonderful place for an entire lifetime; If they keep good thoughts of each person in mind. It's not often that a beautiful family will stray; If together the family have taken the time to play. A real family is a very important part of living; Thinking of others while sharing and giving. So having a wonderful family makes life great; And it works so much better when you keep the faith.

The prevention of dental disease is our top priority. One of our patients recently asked us why kid’s cavities need to be treated if these teeth will come out anyway. This question made us realize that as a general dental practice, we have not been focusing on educating our patients about children’s oral health enough. Please read this article and feel free to call us if you have any questions. Childhood caries is an infectious disease. It is contagious and may pass from a parent to a child and vice versa. Child’s caries must be treated. * 1. Diet. Milk and juice should ONLY be given at mealtimes and snack times. Fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, and yogurt are all very healthy and nutritious options. Giving young children these foods will influence their choice of snacks for the rest of their life. 2. Children are born without cavity-causing bacteria. Try not to blow on your child’s food to cool it; your breath may contain small droplets of saliva, which may contain these bacteria. Refrain from sampling your child’s food. DO NOT place your child’s pacifier in your mouth to clean it. 3. The child can drink from a bottle or Sippy cup throughout the day as long as it only contains water. If the child uses the bottle as a pacifier to help them go to sleep, fill it only with water. 4. Brushing and flossing. Once a tooth has grown, you should use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush to clean the tooth. If two teeth are touching, then flossing should begin. The American Dental Association recommends that a thin smear of fluoride toothpaste be used on a child under the age of 2. *information is provided by American Pediatric Dental Association. ‘Time Jockey’ La Fiesta

Developer for Sheraton San Gabriel Hotel Breaks Ground

by Joe Castillo

Anniversary …. On September 8, 1771, the San Gabriel Mission was founded and 244 years later a celebration in the form of a “fiesta” continues to take place. Music is heard, food is served, games are played and entertainment is available throughout the Labor Day weekend. This years’ fiesta falls on the September 4th, 5th and 6th weekend and is expected to bring in the local crowds to help celebrate another year of the historic Mission. But over the past 244 years, the fiesta has grown and matured into a more civilized event from its wild past. In previous years long ago, the fiesta featured bull-baiting, bear lassoing and rooster pullings, all in the middle of fireworks being tossed by the many revelers. In the old days, the prime attraction was a fight between a bear and a bull. The encounter took place within a stockade in the plaza by the Mission. The bears were brought in from the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains and weren’t just any bears but were Grizzly bears. In order to bring in the grizzlies, a skilled horseman was needed to rope the wild beast in order to bring them under some level of control. Young riders from the Lugo, Linares and Palomares families trained their horses to encircle the wild bear and then the rider would lasso the animal and bring him in. The bulls were usually one of the 3 or 4 which were retained by the local ranchers as the most onerous and illtempered in their collection of livestock. In the matchup between the bear and bull, the bear was usually the winner as its strong paws were able to attack the bull in its vulnerable neck area and stop the bull with its superior strength. The fiesta-goers were excited whenever blood was spilled and the more the better. Rooster pulling was another one of those events which brought the crowd to its feet. Ownerless roosters were used as the bait for skilled horsemen to try and pull a gold nugget tied to the rooster’s neck as the horsemen accelerated on horseback to capture the prize of the rooster. It was a hazardous event but the crowd encouraged it and the event drew more people

as each year passed. When the ranchos broke up and the communities began to be developed, the wild fiestas ceased to exist. In 1908, the Claretian fathers took over management of the Mission and used the fiesta event to raise money to restore the crumbling buildings and church. The celebrations were brought back with the exception of the wild animals but music and food now took center stage. In 1933, the fiesta featured a mounted parade, children’s pet and costume parade, a queen contest and rose show. The San Gabriel Fiesta Association was founded and the annual birthday party grew to state and national significance. Interruptions in the event were caused by World War II and the city gradually lost interest in the fiesta with organization of the event in 1953 returned back to the church itself. The church has continued to manage and organize the event which is its primary fundraiser. Though not as wild as in its early days, La Fiesta de San Gabriel continues to be the number one event for the city and the church ….

Hazens Real Estate Group broke ground today on the new Sheraton San Gabriel Hotel, which is scheduled to open in fall 2017. The five story hotel, located at 303 E Valley Blvd., will include 288 guest rooms, a ballroom, meeting spaces, an indoor swimming pool, an open courtyard area, a lounge, underground parking, spa service, a fitness center, retail space and two restaurants, including a steakhouse that has long been requested by San Gabriel residents. The hotel groundbreaking represents the culmination of several years of hard work by city staff to bring another four star hotel to San Gabriel. The Sheraton will be a step forward in the

revitalization of Valley Boulevard, including infrastructure upgrades, streetscape improvements and public art contributions, and will also be an economic development opportunity for the city. The Sheraton will bring in significant revenues to the city that will benefit San Gabriel residents, including about $2 million per year in Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) and additional sales tax revenues from the new restaurants. The project will also create approximately 300 entry level and management hospitality jobs and boost economic activity in the surrounding area by bringing tourists and visitors to the business community. It will also contribute to in-

creased property tax values in the area. “It’s exciting to see this great project moving forward,” Community Development Director Arminé Chaparyan said. “The Sheraton San Gabriel Hotel will bring substantial benefits to the community, including economic development activity and tax revenues. We can’t wait to see the hotel open in 2017.” For more information on the City of San Gabriel, visit our website at www. sangabrielcity.com or follow us social media @SanGabrielCity on Twitter, Facebook. com/CityofSanGabriel, Instagram.com/SanGabrielCity or weibo.com/sangabrielcity.

Coyote Awareness Workshop by Michael Reyes Rosemead

Several residents have reported sightings of coyotes in the area, and have expressed concerns about community safety. Coyotes are very comfortable living alongside human beings, and after decades of cohabitating with people, they have little fear of urban centers and

are often seen in residential areas. In response to this, the City of Rosemead Public Safety Department will be hosting an event to address concerns raised by our residents. On Wednesday, September 2, 2015, the City of Rosemead will be holding a “Coyote Awareness Workshop” from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at the Rosemead Public Safety Center, located at 8301 Garvey Avenue, Rosemead. The presentation and discussion should last approximately one hour, with seating for 3040 people, and is open to all residents. This workshop is intended to inform residents of the presence of coyotes in our community and how to avoid related problems. The workshop will feature a panel of wildlife and animal experts to share more information with the public about how to protect themselves and their pets from coyotes. They will also be

available to answer questions. For further information, please contact the Public Safety Department at (626) 569-2292 or you can email the Public Safety Department at mreyes@cityofrosemead.org.

The Irwindale Police Department announced our #PinkPatchProject, an innovative public awareness campaign designed to bring attention to the fight against breast cancer. Our #PinkPatchProject centers on a vibrant pink version of our police uniform patch, which was specially designed for us by North Carolina-based Emblem Authority. All of our police officers will be wearing pink patches on their uniforms during “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in October. The pink patches are intended to stimulate conversation within the community and encourage public awareness in the early detection and fight against this disease.

The police department is collaborating in this campaign with City of Hope, a world-renowned cancer hospital and research institution. Flanked by officials from City of Hope, Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell and representatives from the Los Angeles County Chiefs of Police Association, Irwindale Police Anthony Miranda kicked off the #PinkPatchProject at a media conference this morning. The project will continue through the end of “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in October. As part of this initiative, the Irwindale Police Department is selling pink patches to the community, as well as a commemorative pink patch T-shirt and other pink patch

items. Our goal is to raise $10,000.00 from the sale of these items, which will go directly to City of Hope to fund research, treatment and education needed to help find a cure. According to City of Hope, it is estimated that about 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. While the disease can have a profound impact on the patient and her loved ones, it is also one that can be effectively treated with surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy and chemotherapy. At today press conference, Chief Miranda called upon, “All of the good gathered here today to help us make a difference.”

Joe T.’s Scoreboar d By Joe Torosian

El Monte Volleyball Working Hard by Joe Torosian El Monte

So on Sunday night I see my first Los Angeles Dodger game on television in months and they get a no-hit by the Chicago Cubs’ Jake Arrietta. Awesome! How much do the Dodgers have invested in their roster? Millions upon millions the team has spent to produce a champion, and yet they are the first team since 1971 to be a no-hit twice in the same month. ***I was excited to hear about Vin Scully returning to the broadcast booth for the Dodgers next year. Then I thought of all the games I’ve missed him calling the last two seasons and I got angry. Scully is the grandfather who holds the family together. To be deprived of his joy and wisdom because the Dodgers organization made a selfish television deal is an absolute crime. I just cannot get over it. MidBits: *** “This is a lifestyle!”--Bell Gardens quarterback Jordan Cardenas on football. *** “Roger Goodell is going after Tom Brady for the same reason Messala went after Judah Ben-Hur.”--Dennis Miller *** Former Monrovia standout and UCLA defensive lineman Ellis “Zeus” McCarthy is working as an assistant coach this season with the Wildcats. McCarthy declared for the NFL Draft with one year of eligibility remaining with the Bruins and eventually signed with the Miami Dolphins. He is taking this season off to rest his knees and expects to make another attempt at the NFL in 2016. *** Former Azusa Pacific free safety Tyler Thornton is currently serving as a defensive backs coach for the Cougars. His agent is currently seeking an opportunity for him in the Canadian Football League. *** Watching Joc Pederson swing the bat for the Dodgers right now is absolutely painful. I can’t help but feel for the kid. Happy Birthday this week to: 9/3: Mid Valley staffer Duane Barker turns 50. 9/3: Arroyo alum Martin Lopez turns 37. 9/4: Former Mid Valley staffer “Big” Tony Solorzano (currently living in New Jersey) turns 46. 9/5: Arcadia alum Russ Stalder turns 45. 9/5: San Gabriel/Washington State basketball alum Monica Delgadillo turns young. 9/8: Longtime area football

The El Monte High School Girls Volleyball team is working hard to get ready for its first tournament of the season. On Thursday the Lions

will travel to Azusa and play in the Gladstone Tournament. “I am very fortunate to have such a great group of young women playing on

this team,” said El Monte Girls Volleyball coach Kendra Navarro. “It’s going to be a hard working, fun and energy filled season.”

Arcadia Falls to Bell Gardens in Opener

Neither team was perfect, both Bell Gardens and Arcadia traded blows, to the delight of the Salter Stadium crowd, before Noah Quintero scored his fifth touchdown to give the Lancers a 42-37 victory on Friday night. Quintero was the stand-

out. The senior running back rushed the ball 22 times for 266 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught four passes, including a 25-yard connection with quarterback Jordan Cardenas. Arcadia was led by Nico Hillier. The senior quarterback completed 18 of 28

passes for 233 yards, and three touchdowns. Apache wide receiver Craig Carrillo caught a pair of touchdown passes from Hillier in the first half. After Arcadia built a 17-6 in the second quarter the lead changed hands eight times before Bell Gardens

pulled it out in the end. “I give it up to Arcadia,” said Lancers head coach Geoff Ackerman. “Great athleticism, and great fight every step of the way. They were tougher than we thought.”

The Peterson Principle By Tim Peterson

I liked what I saw out of Rosemead Friday Night. We know about Panthers quarterback Steven Nava and he had a solid night. The Panthers also have as good of pair of wide receivers that you'll see in the Mission Valley League in Jordan Parham and Darien Camacho. Angel Lopez is a hard-nosed running back and Robbe Franco is another weapon as well. Down 27-8 Rosemead rebounded to within 27-24 in the third quarter before succumbing to Northview. They never packed it in and let the Vikings know they were in a game. A loss to Northview is nothing to hang your head about. The Panthers look like legitimate contenders in the MVL. Don't worry about their depth. They had over 40 players suited up. As for Northview, yes I still like them in the Valle Vista. Steven Comstock, Andres Hooper, Elijah Grijalva and company did what they do in the 13 point win. Comstock is emerging as a dangerous dual threat and Grijalva was big on both sides of the ball. The Vikes are going to be tough to beat. **Ran into former Rosemead Panther three sport star Steven San Miguel Saturday night serving at a local restaurant. He is headed toward a career in broadcast journalism. Great personality, and if he has as much success in the broadcast field as he did on the sports field he's got a bright future. Oh and Steven, you don't have to call me “Mr. Peterson.” **Did I think St. John Bosco would beat La Mirada? Yes. Did I think they would obliterate the Matadores 76-8? Uh, no. Has to make you wonder if HC Mike Moschetti will reconsider scheduling Bosco again when the two year contract is up. La Mirada still has Mater Dei on the docket in two weeks. Ouch! A tough schedule is good- it gets you ready for league – but when you see a score like that you tend to think they bit off more than they can chew. **According to our own Rich Whittington, Brian Tabatabai or no, El Monte still doesn't like to punt. **Downey shut everybody up with a win over San Pedro. A lot of people, me included, thought San Pedro, an 11-2 team last year, would be too much for the Vikings but Downey knocked off the Pirates 132. Let the blog wars begin. **So is Bell Gardens or

‘The Mid’ Area Area Football Top 10 Bad week for the locals. Fifteen of our 17 coverage area teams took the field Friday night, and 14 of them lost. Sierra Vista picked up the lone win, but that was because they played another local team: La Puente. Monrovia’s loss to Burbank may have been the most surprising.

1. Sierra Vista (1-0) 2. Rosemead (0-1) 3. Arcadia (0-1) 4. El Monte (0-1)

5. Monrovia (0-1) 6. Arroyo (0-1) 7. South El Monte (0-1)

8. Gabrielino (0-1) 9. La Puente (0-1) 10. Baldwin Park (0-1)

Montebello the team to beat in the Almont? Both had great performances. The Lancers did surprise me with their explosiveness on offense. **I have to believe it was more of Burbank being that good than Monrovia being that bad. Suddenly the Bulldogs look like “The Man” in the Pacific. Word out of M-Town is that there were a lot of players out and way too many mistakes. Still a loss is a loss... That's my principle. Concerts in the Park Finale: Mirage by Sal Gomez Santa Clarita

In a fitting end to the Summer Concerts in the Parks Series for 2015, what may be the granddaddy of all events would have to go to the city of Santa Clarita. Located in this city's Central Park and with an estimated crowd of five thousand people gathered in the great open areas where soccer is normally played, they pitched pop-up tents, packed, pre-cooked or store bought meals and drinks into boxes or coolers to spend a day outdoors in

100+ heat for prime spots to await the evening’s concerts. Just prior to show time, the crowd is asked to remove their pop-ups so everyone has an unobstructed view of the stage and with everyone at the ready, the music begins. To close out this year’s summer entertainment the gathered masses were treated to one of the anointed bands showcased on AXS TV's program, The World's Greatest Tribute Bands. “Mirage – Visions of

Fleetwood Mac” lead by the immensely talented Michelle Tyler in the role of Stevie Nicks, is a off-shoot and side project from Tyler's other band, Bella Donna – Rumors of Stevie Nicks & Fleetwood Mac. Sounding similar but with two distinctly different offerings, Mirage is the more straight forward tribute to the Mac. The band includes Bob Weitz as John McVie, Tuzy Ellis as Christine McVie, Richard Graham as Mick Fleetwood and Bruce Lawrence as Lindsey Buckingham. Mirage makes no bones about what they bring to the show. Dressed in some of the classic clothes, most Mac fans remember the band wearing; all five members bring about the looks, musical skill, talent and harmonic beauty that personify photos by Sal Gomez

the real deal...Fleetwood Mac. And on this night with thousands waiting for the party to start, Mirage came out firing on all cylinders. It's a very rare thing to experience a concert in the park such as what Santa Clarita has created. It brings to mind the incredible music festivals of the late 70's & early 80's. The US Festival and Cal Jam could easily be the description of this kind of event. It was huge. In closing out Mid Valley News Summer Concerts in the Parks Series what should be remembered is that all of these wonderful summer events photos by Sal Gomez are all FREE and all family friendly. American Engineer Jack Dwyer played by Owen Wilson (Cars, Wedding Crashers), wife Annie played by Lake Bell (In A World, Children’s Hospital) and their two young daughters

arrive in Cambodia to begin a new life. A company hires him to plan to improve the region's water quality. The family quickly learns that they're right in the middle of a political uprising. Armed

rebels attack the hotel where they're staying and ordered to kill any foreigners that they encounter. Amongst the full chaos, Jack must find a way to save himself and his loved ones from the violence erupting all around them. With the help of Hammond, played by Pierce Brosnan (007, November Man), they must find there way out of Cambodia to neighboring country Vietnam. “No Escape” is directed by John Erick Dowdle, who is mostly known for directing horror movies like “Devil” and “As Above, So Below.” Written by John and his brother Drew Dowdle, they fail to develop their characters and create a motivation for the audience to stay and watch. They have a great first half that brings the suspense of movie like “Taken” but after the first half, the movie really begins to slow down and leave you starring at your watch. You can tell the writers and director specialize in horror because they don’t invest in the characters as much as they should and they have jump scary scenes. If “No Escape” was a full fledge horror movie they could have had a better movie. The film also has a big racism cloud around it, showing every person is either killing the Dwyer family or selling

them something. The film also fails to justify why the country is revolting. Are we to expect that they revolted because the Dwyer family came to their country? The

film leaves the viewer wondering a lot and leaves them less entertained. Grade D+ Award Level MTV Movie Award.
