White House Initiative Names El Monte Promise Foundation a Bright Spot by Christina Davila El Monte

The El Monte Promise Foundation (Promise Foundation) was selected as a Bright Spot in the “Bright Spots in Hispanic Education National Online Catalog.” (http://www.ed.gov/hispanicinitiative). As a Bright Spot, El Monte Promise Foundation will be part of a national online catalog that includes over 230 programs that invest in key education priorities for Hispanics. The announcement was made during a press conference at the launch of Hispanic Heritage Month taking place at Washington, DC on Tuesday, September 15th at 1pm EST. “There has been notable progress in Hispanic educational achievement, and it is due to the efforts of these Bright Spots in Hispanic Education, programs and organizations working throughout the country to

help Hispanic students reach their full potential," said Alejandra Ceja, Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. “We all want our children to thrive and education is one of the most powerful paths to a successful future,” El Monte Mayor Andre Quintero said. “We are investing in future generations so that they can give back to the communities that believed in them. I am so proud that we received this recognition and thank all the partners who believe in El Monte’s children.” The White House Initiative seeks to leverage these Bright Spots to encourage collaboration between stakeholders focused on similar issues in sharing data-driven approaches, promising practices, peer advice, and effective partnerships, ulti-

mately resulting in increased support for the educational attainment of the Hispanic community, from cradle-tocareer. El Monte Promise Foundation received a visit from Alejandra Ceja herself, earlier this year where she expressed “El Monte is a shining example of what

other communities need to do across the country to make sure that other students in other communities have the same access to college.” El Monte Promise Foundation received this recognition for its collaborative partnerships with the City of El Monte, El Monte/

South El Monte Chamber of Commerce, El Monte City School District, Mountain View School District, Rio Hondo College, Cal State Los Angeles (CSULA), and University of California Irvine (UCI). This collaborative has established guaranteed enrollment and priority registration for El Monte

For the third year in a row, Beholder won the Zenyatta Stakes, one of the five Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” races run at Santa Anita’s Autumn Meet on Saturday, September 26. The blistering 97 degree heat meant all the horses in the day’s eleven races waited for, “Riders up,” in the Saddling Barn, rather than in the Parade Ring. But, the intense weather didn’t stop Beholder’s diehard fans from flocking to her saddling stall 40 minutes before her race started, eager to see their favorite. Trainer Richard Mandella’s 5-yearold mare exited the barn to cheers from the crowd. The Grandstand echoed with roars of approval approximately 15 minutes later when she crossed the finish line in front of challenger My Sweet Addiction. Youtube, iTube, We All Tube In June of 2015, popular Vine celebrity and Youtube star Carter Reynolds (19) was accused of sexual harassment. A video was leaked of Carter and his former 16 year old girlfriend, Maggie Lindemann. For starters, the video showed both as intoxicated, with the girl being a minor- and Carter not even being twentyone years of age. Already, there are two offenses on the line. Next, Maggie drunkenly persuades Carter to take off his pants, but in the next clip, she seems to change her mind. Carter forces her to perform sexual acts on him, but she blatantly refuses. The leakage of the video has thus sparked controversy within the Youtube community as another act of sexual harassment made by an iconic individual. More-

over, after the leak, Maggie had attempted suicide and was being hospitalized. Carter took to Twitter to mock her, calling her a “psycho.” Followers attacked him for being so rash on those thinking about or having attempted suicide. Reynolds then tweeted he had attempted at suicide as well because of the “unnecessary hate” he was receiving. Reynolds then took a two day vacation from social media. Recently, there has been an increase of reports of Youtube video makers abusing, manipulating, and harassing their viewers and fellow coworkers (other vloggers). Among those accused include Sam Pepper, who had made a “prank video” where he had pinched

the bottoms of unwilling victims, and Alex Day, who had sent suggestive emails to viewers, harassed them sexually, and manipulated them emotionally. These instances bring into context that the Youtube community is a rapidly growing industry. More than a thousand videos are being uploaded on a daily basis. The fan base of many of these vloggers is increasing, and the content is becoming more various. But even with the rise of Youtube, power must be used- not abused. Twenty something year old males are attracting a number of impressionable and very young individuals. I know, because I used to be one of those kids (Now, I’m still a fan- just not as impressionable or fanatic). It’s a

Webb'S Rules FRANK by Eugene R. Webb

Kirk's room is not very large; And it is just behind the garage. The one thing I do recall; We didn't allow Frank in the house at all. When the back door opened Frank would dash in; Then we'd have to go looking for him. Usually behind the couch he would be; Hiding and hoping nobody could see. Sometimes Frank didn't seem like a cat at all; Because he and Kirk enjoyed playing ball. Energy, Frank did not lack; He'd either catch the ball or hit it back. He loved ping pong and also played catch; Sometimes even the ball he would fetch. The ball, little with holes and of white plastic it was made; So Frank was never ever afraid. Frank jumped from the roof, on the truck, to the ground; Frank was always hanging around. He'd come to the windows and look in; He wanted Kirk to come out and play with him. Once he jumped off of the roof onto the barbecue grill; The fire, I know he did feel. For he quickly jumped to the ground; But old Frank still hung around. Frank disappeared Sept. 21, 1991, & he never came back; He had some white markings, but mostly black. I guess disappearing is a good way to go; For what happened to Frank, we will never know.

first place. After her victory, the next question on everyone’s mind was whether Beholder will compete in the Breeders’ Cup Classic against American Pharoah and other males, or in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff for females. Trainer Mandella, when asked about the Breeders’ Cup Classic, said, “…as of now, there’s no reason not to think of that.” Given American Pharoah’s historic Triple Crown win and his Eclipse award, plus Beholder’s two Eclipse awards and her two prior Breeders’ Cup victories, if they do compete against each other it will be a rock-star caliber sporting event!

The day’s other “Win and You’re In” stakes race winners were: trainer Doug O’Neill’s unbeaten 2-yearold Nyquist, who won the FrontRunner and who is being eyed as a potential Kentucky Derby candidate; unbeaten Songbird, the 2-year-old filly who won the Chandelier Stakes for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer; Photo Call, trainer H. Graham Motion’s winner of the Rodeo Drive Stakes; and Smooth Roller who won the Awesome Again Stakes in front of second-place finisher Hoppertunity and third-place runner-up, and last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, Bayern.

‘Time Jockey’

Road To Memoriesby Joe Castillo

Peaceful Resting Place …. Bob Hope was an entertainer, patriot and humanitarian. We mostly remember him for his comedy shows on TV and his “Road to” movies which were always lively, entertaining and humorous. You may have remembered him for his Christmas specials from Vietnam or his hosting of the Academy Awards. But however you remember him, rest assured that his entire story is even more remarkable than what you may have known. He was a star in the movie industry headlining in over 50 feature films and appeared in cameos in another 15. Hope was best known for his “Road” movies which he stared with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour and was the #1 actor in box office sales. Though he never won an Academy Award he received five Oscars, including two honorary Oscars, two special awards and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. But it was television which made Hope into a superstar. For 60 years, he was under contract with NBC and often appeared in seasonal specials including special variety shows performed in front of US soldiers serving in areas of conflicts. His shows started in in 1941 during World War II and lasted through Desert Storm in 1996. He was known as “G.I. Bob” and his shows brought an enormous amount of laughter to the troops, but Hope did more for the troops than just entertain them. He would often visit wounded soldiers in hospitals and perform benefits to raise money for projects which aided soldiers in their special needs. Bob Hope loved to play golf and was golf buddies with seven US Presidents. He founded the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic Tournament in Palm Springs which has been a PGA tour tournament for 50 years and raised over $45 million for charity. In his early days, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby would play in charity golf tournaments at the San Gabriel Country Club. Hope received over 2,000 awards and citations for humanitarian and professional efforts. He received an honorary knighthood from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and by order

of Pope John Paul II, Bob was honored as Knight Commander of St. Gregory with Star. President Kennedy presented him with the Congressional Gold Medal, President Johnson presented him with the Medal of Freedom but his most prized award was recognition as an “Honorary Veteran” which congress approved and was signed by President Clinton. Hope said, “I’ve been given many awards in my lifetime but to be numbered by the men and women I admire most, is the greatest honor I have ever received.” On July 27, 2003, Bob passed away at the age of 100. He was buried at Mission San Fernando where the Bob Hope Memorial Garden was established as a remembrance of his life and as a place for reflection and solitude. The Memorial Garden is a lush collection of seasonal plants and trees with a reflection pond and hypnotic stream running through it. His crypt and that of his wife of over 70 years, Dolores, lie side by side on a platform with Bob Hope’s image overseeing his memorial garden and memories of those who come to reflect and remember…..

SGMHS Students to Screen Film at International Festival by Jo Anne Disney San Gabriel

Congratulations to San Gabriel Mission High School’s Fine Arts Department Chair, Mr. Christopher Landinguin and the students of IB Film Studies for having their short film “The Reunion” selected for screening at the 4th Annual International Film Festival of Cinematic Arts in Beverly Hills on October 10th and 11th . “The Reunion” tells the story of Pam who

returns to her former school to attend her 10 year high school reunion. The reunion reminds Pam of the painful memories of her past, but also how they shaped the woman she is today. In a letter to Mr. Landinguin from Mr. Dean Walker of the IFFCA, he remarked, “We would like to let you know that your film deserved special recognition and was among the very best of submissions we received from all over the world.” This is quite an honor for SGMHS. “The Reunion” was written by Mr. Landinguin as a project for the UCLA Summer Screenwriting Workshop in 2014 as a potential film project for his IB Film students to produce during the upcoming school

year. Mission’s IB film students directed, filmed, and starred in the film as a way to gain more experience in filmmaking and to earn a filmmaking credit, and especially helpful to the students applying to film school. “The Reunion” features the acting talents of Alex Cabral as Pam, Reney Diaz as Leo, Skylar Reyes as Sam, Barbara Jimenez as Ashley, Cristina Estrada as Esther, and Norma Retzepis as Lucy. “The Reunion” will be screened at the Laemmle Music Hall 3 in Beverly Hills. The 67th Annual Emmy Awards made history in 2 categories and brought many surprises. Funny and witty Andy Samberg hosted the Emmy’s, but some of his jokes were received with silence. At a certain point it was painful to watch, but I’m glad he didn’t have to present the awards, too. This year’s big studio winner was HBO, winning 14 of 43 awards. Amazon Instant Video won 2 awards and Netflix won 1. Jeffrey Tambor won the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for the show “Transparent,” which was about a transgender man. Julia Louis-Dreyfus won an award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the show “Veep” which she plays the president of the United States. Uzo Aduba won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series making her the second person to win an award in Drama and Comedy for the same show and character in “Orange is the New Black.” Outstanding Comedy Series went to “Veep” and Outstanding Drama Series went to “Game of Thrones.” John Hamm won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the show that just ended “Mad Men.” Glad to see that show end on a good note. Viola Davis was the true star of the show. She won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for “How to Get Away with Murder.” Viola is the first African American women to win this award. She had truly an extraordinary performance. Tracy Morgan made a surprised visit to the Emmy’s to present

Emmy’s Make History the award for Outstanding Drama Series. The previous year, Tracy was involved in a big limo accident that put him in coma for 8 days. Tracy came out of coma with a year of physical therapy. He was able to recover and walk on his own to attend the Emmy’s. Extraordinary Rep. Chu Welcomes Visit and Address by Pope Francis Teachers in Extraordinary Times by Benjamin Suarato San Gabriel Valley

by Mark Peters El Monte

Nestled in the city of El Monte is La Primaria Elementary, one of many schools within the Mountain View School District is one of El Montes hidden gems as an educational institution. Located right off the 605 freeway at Ramona and Gilman is a school that is ranked #1 in the district. You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while. The first day back to school the students are encouraged to make signs showing their name, what grade they are in and who their teacher is. The kids really go above and beyond with their creativity and have a blast walking around with them. Degas Peters stated “I can’t wait to go to school and show everyone my sign.” The kids are so very proud of the hard work they put into their back to school posters and I must say did an amazing job with creativity. The teachers of La Primaria kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class. But not to worry kids, you have some of the best teachers in the district and they are here to guide you through the first day jitters. The administration staff of La Primaria is the life blood to the school. Principal Lugo, Office Manager Mrs. Isela, Health Clerk Ms. Haro ensure the efficiency

and smooth operation of the school. The teachers at La Primaria Elementary are the diamonds of the school. There are not enough words of unwavering appreciation and gratitude to express what you mean to the kids and the school. Aristotle said it best “Those who educate children well are more to be honored than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well.” There are many unsung heroes who make our life beautiful and we often forget to recognize those who made it just that… our teachers at La Primaria Elementary and throughout the Mountain View School District. It is worthy to note, that the teachers of La Primaria participate in their own incredible, yet largely unrecognized, “athletic” event. Their daily race to educate and enrich the lives of El Monte children requires not just “an extra mile” but indeed a team marathon of devotion and sacrifice. So the next time the “Race to the Top” comes up, I hope it conjures thoughts about the teachers and students who actually do the running, how far the race is, and all the obstacles they work to overcome. As a La Primaria teacher you are a pillar of support, an epitome of strength, as loving as a mother, as strict as a father, as caring as a friend, a disciplinarian, yet always so approachable and warm at heart. You as a teacher are a beautiful human being. This is precisely what a La Primaria teacher is, for every student. You are their mentors, and role models. If you have been lucky to have teachers like these, think... have you

Today, His Holiness Pope Francis addressed a Joint Meeting of Congress as part of a six-day tour to the United States – the first time Pope Francis has visited the country. Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), who attended his address, released the following statement: “Pope Francis delivered a clear and uplifting message—one of peace, responsibility, and commonality. He urged the nation’s political leaders to seek and embrace solutions to many of the most critical issues we face as a global community, like poverty and climate change. Above all, the Pope’s message was one of compassion and humanity to all, especially the most vulnerable among us. As he said today, ‘The yardstick we use for others will be the yardstick which time will use for us.’ “Perhaps most central in his remarks, is the need to treat immigrants with dignity and respect. Some fans were troubled when Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw got into an argument with Manager Don Mattingly last Thursday after being pulled from a game. Kershaw had thrown only 80 pitches, but was trailing 3-0 to the Arizona Diamondbacks after five innings. The cameras showed Kershaw arguing with Mattingly about wanting to stay in the game. It was the best thing I’ve seen from the Dodgers all season. Now, truth be known, because I don’t have Time Warner, I haven’t seen very many Dodger games. However, to see this spark in Kershaw was the first sign of life this club has shown in a long time. As a “sort of” Dodgers fan these days, I’m encouraged because this team lacks vocal leadership. I hope this is the moment Kershaw evolves from a great pitcher into a great and undisputed leader of the team. Truth be known, in a very deep National League, he needs to or it will be another season without a World Series appearance. ***MidBits: *** “I’m puzzled with the infatuation with the NBA. We continue to go in that direction, and I think we have a better game. We have a game that is more pleasing to the eye.”---West Virginia men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins *** This is an amazing stat. Former USC back up quarterback Matt Cassel, who could not get on the field for the Trojans, has been in the NFL 11 years, he’s started 72 games, thrown for over 15,000 yards and 96 touchdowns. That’s average until compare it to the guy who kept him off the field at USC: Matt Leinart. Leinart, who won a national title and Heisman Trophy as a Trojan, was the tenth overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. He played six seasons in the NFL and started just 18 games. The lesson here? Never give up. Mountain View tried to answer back with a scoring drive of its own. However, it could not pass the 50-yard line and was forced to punt. After the punt, Rosemead compiled a 16-play drive to push its lead to 14. On fourth and goal from the 3-yard line, Nava handed the ball to Franco who bulldozed his way in for the score and Mead had a 14-0 early in the second quarter. On the Vikings ensuing possession, tailback Emilio Mejia fumbled and lost the ball at his own 27. Four plays later, on a fourth and long, Nava dropped back

and connected with Franco for a 36-yard touchdown. The Panthers defense forced View to punt with less than two minutes left in the half. Following the punt, they took only three plays to reach the end zone. Nava connected with Parham on a Wheel-route for a 56-yard score. Rosemead lead 28-0 at the half. The Panther offense added two more scores in the third quarter extending their lead to 42. Both scores came on Nava passing touchdowns.

Rosemead running back Robbie Franco rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown as the Panthers tallied 460 total yards of offense in a 42-0 shutout over visiting Mountain View on Friday night at Rod Marinelli Stadium. Following a missed field goal by the Vikings, the Panthers offense marched down the field on their opening drive to score the game’s first touchdown. Quarterback Steven Nava handed the ball to wideout Jordan Parham who weaved his way for a 20-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead with 5:33 left in the quarter.

Beatles Tribute Festival 2015 Lands in Pico Rivera by Sal Gomez Pico Rivera

Imagine an entire day filled with Beatles music & art combined with a Latin flavor of food and drink in the heart of Pico Rivera, located in a former bull fighting ring with 100's of people dancing, singing and laughing to the great-

est music ever written and recorded. What you have is Beatles Tribute Festival 2015. For one day the Pico Rivera sports arena was rechristened “Strawberry Fields,” with the Beatles Tribute Festival 2015 reborn in what is being described as

its new permanent home in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley. Headlining the event was the incredible tribute band Britain's Finest, one of the premier Beatles Tribute Bands known around the world for their fun, energetic photos by Sal Gomez

and spot-on tribute to the beloved Beatles. Joining them on stage for a day’s worth of music were Rubber Soul, Masters of Puppet, Lady Beatles, Plastic Soul, Tommy Mora, Shenkar, Members of Oingo Boingo, The Beatunes & many many more. Hosted by the dynamic radio duo from KLOS, both Frazier Smith and Chris Carter kept the crowd pumped and excited throughout the day. Huge congratulations to

Fred Zermeno and his staff and co-organizers for their fine job in not only putting on a very exciting event, but for keep the ship sailing in the scorching 100+ degree weather. The hope is this annual event devised with a purpose to raise funds to feed our men & women in uniform by providing meals to the Bob Hope USO located at LAX, will continue to grow and thrive in the years to come. Bravo everyone, Bravo!

Black Mass by Glen Maldonado National

Irish hoodlum James "Whitey" Bulger, played by Johnny Depp (Alice in Wonderland), pursues a life of crime in 1970s Boston. Approached by FBI agent John Connolly, played by Joel Edgerton (Warrior), the lawman convinces Whitey to help the agency fight the

Italian mob. While his brother Bill Bulger, played by Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek into Darkness), remains a powerful leader in the Massachusetts Senate, their unholy alliance spirals out of control, Bulger increases his power and evades capture to become one of the most

dangerous gangsters in U.S. history. The biggest fall of “Black Mass” is its story. The writing fails to give a perspective on the rise and fall of James Bulger. The writing is considered true but according to members of his actual gang the story is mostly fiction. The fact is I never understood what James Bulger did. I saw him kill and I saw him kill but what was his trade. This film needed to really show what Bulger did to get on the FBI’s most wanted list. With movies like “Good Fellas” or “Godfather” out there, this movie falls short. “Black Mass” won’t win best picture or writing, but Johnny Depp can win best actor for his performance. Johnny’s acting made me fear the man James Bulger. He made me see a man that wasn’t right in the head and who would kill anyone who snitched yet snitched himself. Scott Cooper who directed “Out of the Furnace” could have directed the movie better and cut it shorter. The film was over 2 hours. The rest of the cast delivers great performances. Benedict Cumberbatch and Joel Edgerton had less scene time than Johnny, but equally delivered in performance. “Black Mass” is a mob movie with superb acting but will fail to be remembered in the lights of great mob movies. Grade B, Award level Golden Globe.
