It’s time to plan summer activities In less than two months, mid-valley students will be out of school, and parents will wonder how to keep their kids busy until the next school year begins. Looking for outdoor events, camps or sports? We’ve got you covered. Information you need to know about summer youth activities can be found in “Summer in the City.” We’ve included descriptions of what dozens of organizations in Linn, Benton and Marion counties offer for preschoolers, elementary students, teenagers and even adults. Whether you’re interested in acting or summer camps, reading or crafts, there’s something for everyone. Plan now, and have a great summer. —The editors

ALBANY PARKS & RECREATION 2019 SUMMER CAMPS Registration for any of the following programs can be done by phone, mail or in person at the Albany Parks and Recreation office, open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. CAMP ALBANY Albany Parks and Recreation Camps are back for another exciting summer filled with incredible games, swimming, wonderful adventures, and wacky fun! It is a great way to keep your child physically active and engaged during the summer months while building their social interaction skills. They’ll enjoy a wide variety of fun-filled themed camps including games, sports, arts, crafts, and more! Most camps will visit the COOL! Pool a couple of afternoons for water fun. LET’S GET ARTSY Grab your paint brush and discover the world of art as you explore a variety of art mediums. You’ll be introduced to the unique art forms of Vincent van Gogh, Pollock, and Andy Warhol as you put your personal touch to your own masterpieces. Warning: no one said art wasn’t messy! July 8-12 EXPERIMENTS, REACTIONS, AND EXPLOSIONS Jump into the wide world of science as we test the limits of our knowledge! We will explore all kinds of experiments, including chemical reactions, physical phenomenon, and scientific theories. Build a safe container for an egg drop and create your own slime! Campers will have a blast on our field trip to OMSI.
July 15-July 19 SUMMER ON THE HIGH SEAS Join us as we explore the great open ocean this summer! Travel from Barbados to the Bermuda Triangle to explore the ocean life and culture. Campers will get to assemble their crew of pirates to build their ship, walk the plank, and find the buried treasure! We’ll top off our voyage with a trip to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. July 22- July 26 SHERLOCK TO THE RESCUE It’s mystery solving time! There has been a crime committed at Camp Albany! We need the best team of detectives to analyze clues and solve the case. Dust for fingerprints, decode secret messages, and put all the clues together to put the criminal behind bars. July 29-Aug. 2 LIGHTS, CAMERA, CAMP ALBANY! The big screen is coming to Camp Albany! We need a team of directors, actors, and camera crew to create this summer’s biggest blockbuster. Campers will learn how to write a script, direct a scene, and operate camera and light equipment. Be sure to join us on our red-carpet premiere. Aug. 5-Aug. 9 LET THE OLYMPICS BEGIN! Travel back in time with us as we explore the first Olympics! Campers will get to compete in a variety of games, spanning from the ancient Greek classics to the modern summer sports with a few wacky ones included. Train hard and earn your gold medal! COMMUNITY POOLS ALBANY COMMUNITY POOL Albany Community Pool’s water temperature is 84 degrees. Some of our amenities include an iceberg to climb, volleyball net, a rope swing, diving boards, slide, and basketball hoops. LINN COUNTY Another feature of Cool! Pool is our Lazy River, an oval shaped area of water 3 feet deep with a current that gently pushes guests around in the oval. The River area is not only used for recreation swim times, but is also the location of our water aerobics class. Participants in this class receive the added benefit of the current pushing against them, adding resistance. Cool! Offers a rectangular area with maximum depth of 4.5 feet, where guests have the opportunity to play basketball or just swim and enjoy themselves. This area is also used during our Lap Swim for fitness swimming. The area of the pool which stands out the tallest is our big, twisty slide. With a lifeguard in the catch basin of the pool, children of all ages and heights are able to ride our slide, with big smiles on their faces.
