Although Corvallis has earned national recognition for a number of its attributes, we are particularly proud of its recent recognition as the top city in the country in innovation. Scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico, writing for the journal PloS ONE, did the math and found that Corvallis led the nation in patented inventions as well as economic output, personal income and preventing violent crime.
Corvallis’ location in the heart of the Willamette Valley also means you are just minutes away from a multitude of other recreation opportunities. Pack a picnic and visit the picturesque wineries located throughout the region. You’ll find friendly people, award-winning wines and spectacular scenery. Or, try a day hike through the McDonald Forest, Finley National Wildlife Refuge or other beautiful settings just outside the city limits. The city also hosts a variety of festivals, fairs and other special events throughout the year. America’s Most Innovative City! By Bennett Hall Here in Corvallis, we like to brag about how smart we are. And why not? We are, after all, the birthplace of the inkjet printer, the transparent transistor and the Maraschino cherry. For years the city has been cropping up near the top of national “most innovative” lists, based on the number of patents issued per 100,000 people. But we always seemed to trail larger communities. Now a group of academic researchers has come up with a new way of crunching the numbers that goes beyond per capita rankings to strip out some of the disproportionate advantages that come with size. By their calculations, Corvallis emerges as the most innovative city in the United States, bar none. Based on a comparison of more than 350 metropolitan statistical areas, we also do very well in the related rankings of wealth creation and low crime rate. The findings were published in the Nov. 10 edition of PLoS One, the online journal of the Public Library of Science, by Luis M.A. Bettencourt and Geoffrey B. West of the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Santa Fe Institute, Jose Lobo of Arizona State University and Deborah Strumsky of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. www.visitcorvallis.com

Oregon State University By Gary Dulude Visit Corvallis, and you’ll immediately notice the tremendous contribution Oregon State University makes to the economic, cultural, recreational and social vitality of our community. It’s a place where faculty, students and alumni are turning ideas into reality — meeting challenges and solving problems through research, innovation and application. True to its designation as the state’s land grant university, Oregon State is investing a better future with a focus on three signature areas of research and teaching: Earth systems science; human health and wellness; and economic and social progress. And as Oregon’s largest public research university, Oregon State attracted $261.7 million in research funding last year. Oregon State is also one of only two land, sea, space and sun grant universities in the United States. By Marci Sischo Corvallis abounds in natural areas and forests. We're known for forestry research, as well as hiking, biking, and more leisurely strolls through nature. Corvallis presents an opportunity to learn, too. Beazell Memorial Forest is a demonstration forest with four miles of trails and open space area managed with progressive ecosystem practices for environmental, education, and research opportunities. McDonald Forest features interpretive trails showing aspects of forest ecology and management. Researchers work in McDonald Forest to answer questions like “What impacts do restoration projects have on oak woodlands, prairies, and savannahs?” and “What impacts do forest roads have on stream clarity and fish habitats?” And that's just for starts – there are up
Also inside McDonald Forest you'll find Peavy Arboretum, a 40-acre preserve featuring over 200 native and exotic plant species and three different interpretive trails of its own. Visitors are warmly encouraged to explore these trails and learn more about forestry. Starker Forests provides both guided and self-guided tours to become acquainted with their forest management practices and the great outdoors. They offer a quarter-mile walking trail, along with a more in-depth bus tour that is available every Wednesday from June through September. (Those interested in the bus tour will want to make reservations ahead of time – these tours fill up fast! Call 800-334-8118 to reserve your seat.) Both of Starker Forests' tours feature several points of interest, including 80-year-old timber stands. Whether you seek to learn more about the inner workings of nature's bounty, or you're just looking for a lovely trail to walk, Corvallis has the place for you.

By Charles Weller Visit Corvallis and you will soon see that this is one of the most pedestrian and bicycle-friendly communities in Oregon. Automobile drivers in town are courteous to bicycles and pedestrians, helping to create a safe environment. The city maintains a network of paved paths that link parks together and provide people with car-free bike rides and hikes. Corvallis and Benton County parks provide a variety of paved and unpaved trails, giving you easy access to beautiful natural areas. Ask for a trail suggestion at one of the many bike shops and outdoor stores in town; youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll get a range of answers tailored to the time of year and your desires. Here are a few to start with:
Mountain Biking Bald Hill Natural Area is a great starting point for a variety of offroad adventures. Three separate lots with plenty of parking lead to both paved trails and branching single-track that connects to Fitton Green, Oak Creek, and Cardwell Hill County Parks. Ride quietly and you're likely to see deer, coyote and many species of birds. Make sure to clean your bike before and after rides to reduce the transportation of invasive species.
Road Biking In addition to nearly twenty miles of paved multi-use paths within Corvallis, many roads in the area offer wide shoulders and light traffic. Ride south or east and you'll be greeted by rolling hills and local agriculture. Head north or west for a more challenging route such as the ride up Sulpher Springs Road or the daunting climb to Marys Peak (4.097 feet). www.visitcorvallis.com

Hiking Whether your ideal hike is on a boardwalk, paved path, forest trail, or grassy meadow you can find it nearby. Catch a glimpse of the rare Fender's Blue Butterfly on a hike through William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge just south of town. Watch beavers build their dams at Sunset Natural Area or have a picnic among wildflowers in Timberhill Natural Area. North of town OSU manages Peavy Arboretum, a great place to grow your love of trees. More than fifty great hikes are nearby. It seems like every other week we have a big artistic event happening to celebrate our local performers and creators and show off their works. We have a diverse array of arts galleries, and most of our downtown shops proudly offer locally-produced goods, jewelry, and decorations. In 2012 and 2013 our celebrations are going to be bigger and better than ever, because we have some major anniversaries coming up! The Whiteside Theatre's 90th anniversary happens in 2012. This grand old theatre was one of Oregon's original movie palaces and time, two fires, and long period of closure took its toll on this gorgeous theatre. Our community is www.visitcorvallis.com

working to restore this historical gem to all of its former glory. The Arts Center turns 50 in 2012, also. The Center works to integrate arts into Corvallis' community through outreach and creative education programs, among other projects. It's also devoted to showcasing some of the best our artists have to offer. And speaking of showcasing local arts, our Fall Festival marks its 40th year in 2012. This festival turns Corvallis into an artistic Mecca, drawing creators from all over the state and almost 30,000 people annually to enjoy those creations! The da Vinci Days Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2013. Every year da Vinci Days devotes three days to arts and science, incorporating outstand-
ing artists, amazing feats of engineering, and more into a stunning sensory experience that would do its namesake proud. We expect its 25th year to be nothing short of amazing. The big anniversary belongs to the Majestic Theatre, which will see its 100th anniversary in 2013. The Majestic first opened its doors in 1913 as a vaudeville house, and a century later it's still serving Corvallis as a center of live arts, attracting local, regional, and national musicians, featuring live theatre, and acting as a hub for artists of all stripes in Corvallis. HisToric corvallis River. These adjoining claims met in the vicinity of today’s Benton County Courthouse. In 1852, when Oregon Territory extended from Canada to California and from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, the territorial legislature selected and established a territorial university here. The Corvallis Academy, the first community school in the area, eventually became Oregon State University (OSU). The campus plan reflects John Olmsted’s early design and remains a significant aspect of the dynamic role of the campus in the greater cultural landscape.

By B. A. Beierle Corvallis’ story begins more than 10,000 years ago, when ancient ice dams collapsed near present day Missoula, Montana. These dams released cataclysmic floods that scoured across today’s eastern Pacific Northwest and brought rocks and rich soils to the Willamette River Valley. Later, Kalapuya people lived here and promoted acorns – a staple of their diet – by managing the Valley with fire. When early Euro-Americans reached this valley, they found abundantly rich soils and land successfully managed for centuries. They also found the Willamette River was navigable to Corvallis. This water transportation route would later support steamboat navigation and give rise to riverside grain warehouses and early brawny businesses that shaped much of today’s historic downtown. The Willamette Valley was the Eden at the end of the Oregon Trail for thousands of immigrants. Early settlers included J.C. Avery, who settled on what is now the south side of downtown along the Mary’s and Willamette Rivers. Avery built Corvallis’ first home and staked off twelve acres around his log cabin for the first town lots. In 1846 William Dixon filed a claim north of Avery’s along the Willamette

When the college moved from downtown in the 1890s, North College Hill historic neighborhood developed on a gentle slope. Nearby, the inviting and walkable College Hill West Historic District includes almost 400 structures. Corvallis also showcases other historic neighborhoods: Avery Addition, Franklin Square, North & South Central Park, North Downtown, Rayburn Addition, South Town, and others. Corvallis’ collective memory lingers along its tree-lined streets, punctuated with colorful gardens and framed with residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial reminders of a shared past that influences the image of the community today. College Hill West Historic District College Hill West Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and contains more than 250 historic homes within a relatively small area. Early residents of the area included those who built Oregon State College, and 14 residents have had OSU facilities or programs named in their honor. Fort Hoskins Historic Park Located off Kings Valley Hwy. 223 Fort Hoskins was established in 1856 to protect and monitor the new coastal Indian reservation. Purchased by Benton County in 1991 and opened in 2002, it features a distinctive picnic shelter for public use and group rental. Fort Hoskins Historic Park showcases the park’s varied history, vegetation, and scenic views through educational interpretive displays and self-guided trails. Irish Bend Covered Bridge Located in Corvallis across Oak Creek on the Campus Way bike path, this historic bridge is open to foot and bicycle traffic only. Harris Covered Bridge Two and a half miles west of the community of Wren, off Hwy. 20 on Harris Road, this bridge is currently in use. It was originally built in 1929 and has limited height clearance. Motor homes are NOT recommended. Hayden Covered Bridge One and a half miles west of the town of Alsea, off Hwy. 34, Hayden Bridge spans the Alsea River. It was built in 1918 and is currently in use.
