Balloon raises money to fight polio ADA sponsors The Rotary Club of Albany is sponsoring the Polio Panda hot-air balloon at this year’s ATI Wah Chang Northwest Art & Air Festival to raise awareness of Rotary’s work to eradicate polio and raise funds to support the Rotary polio initiative. The giant panda-shaped balloon was made by Aerostar International with more than 1,400 yards of nylon fabric and nearly two statute miles of thread. When fully inflated, the Montgolfier-style envelope holds 90,000 cubic feet of air. The Rotary Club of Albany is selling tickets for tethered balloon rides in the Panda’s gondola on Saturday, Aug. 27. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Terri and Larry Ratkoviak’s panda hot air balloon will be on hand to give tethered rides on Saturday. (the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) have worked since 1988 to wipe out polio. Rotary has been immunizing children against polio since 1985. The club has contributed more than $900 million to the effort and Rotary club members have volunteered
their time and personal resources to reach more that two billion children in 122 countries with the oral polio vaccine. Through the efforts of Rotary and its partners, polio cases have decreased by more than 99 percent. The remaining one percent is challenged by geographic isolation, worker fatigue, armed conflict and cultural barriers. The club is currently working to raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. When not associated with the Rotary initiative, the balloon is known as Party Panda. It is used as a goodwill ambassador and promoter of ballooning. The Panda is owned by Terri and Larry Ratkoviak of Etna, Calif.
geocaching event Geocaching enthusiasts get a new challenge at the Northwest Art & Air Festival with a hunt throughout Albany on Saturday, Aug. 27. The exercise is sponsored by the Albany Downtown Association. Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches,” anywhere in the world. Participants who complete a search route earn a commemorative coin; for this event, the coin is embossed with the Art & Air Festival logo on one side and the ADA logo on the reverse. “It’s fun for families, seniors, singles, really all
walks of life,” said organizer Celia Formiller, of Frogs & Pollywogs children’s store. Participants must have a registered username on www.geocaching.com. The event is limited by the number of coins available to 150. The event starts Friday, Aug. 26, at the Night Glow in the balloon breakfast area at Timber-Linn Memorial Park. Participants will gather for a meet-and-greet in the balloon pilots’potluck area. They will return at 10 a.m. Saturday to receive a list of GPS coordinates to take them to caches. Caches will be found all over Albany, most of them downtown. Those who complete the search can pick up their coins at 3 p.m. For more information, call 541-967-3055.
