Betty Morgan
etty Morgan MBE is one of the most successful sports women in the UK. Her 40-year sports career includes appearances at four Commonwealth Games, with a silver medal in 2006.
Betty was born on the outskirts of Brecon, educated in Mount Street Primary followed by Brecon Girls Grammar School. She's won numerous caps for Wales, won more than 15 British and 70 Welsh indoor and outdoor crowns and once achieved British singles, pairs and triples outdoor titles all on the same day. Betty has played bowls all over the world. Describe yourself in three words. Organised, honest, overweight.
How would your friends and family describe you in three words? Reliable, nagging, too organised.
What’s important in life? Family, friends, happiness and health.
What’s the least important thing in life? T.V.
If you could only possess one item what would it be? A Ball.
MBE
What's the single best piece of advice you've ever been given? Don’t pack the suitcase until last thing.
How would you spend your last day on earth? Playing bowls in sunny surroundings.
What phrase do you over-use? “Shape up”
What’s been your most rewarding experience so far? Receiving an MBE from the Queen.
What do you think is the worst item of clothing ever invented? Tights.
What do you believe is your biggest accomplishment? Winning silver medal in the Commonwealth Games.
Where are we most likely to find you at a party? Party... I will be there either at the bar for 1st round or speaking to all I can.
Which three people, dead or alive, would you like to have dinner with? Elvis Presley, Simon Cowell and Dave Stephens. Do you spend much time at a computer? Doing what? Facebook mostly, not sure what I am doing though... What do you think are the secrets of success? Being what you are.
What would you say to persuade someone to try their first game of bowls? Please try… It’s a young person’s game but old people can play it too.
Who or what has inspired you the most? My family.
What would make the world a better place? Stop religion fighting religion.
If stranded on an idyllic desert island with one piece of music, one movie, one book, one meal and one luxury; what would you choose? Music: ‘How great thou art’. Movie: ‘Sound of Music’. Book: Crossword book with thesaurus. Meal: Chicken breast and salad. Luxury... Plane to get me back off island…
Do you try to stay fit? How? No - playing bowls can be enough. Some events last all day and you can be on the green up to 9 hours.
Who or what winds you up the most? I don’t suffer fools gladly.
What’s your signature dish? Sunday roast.
If you could have a whole year to do whatever you wanted, what would you do? Travel to warmer countries.
Do you have a hobby? Can you tell us what it is? Baby sitting and gardening.
If you could only watch one programme on TV and hear one programme on Radio - what would they be? ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’ and love songs on Radio 2
What’s the worst thing anyone has asked you to do? Answer these questions !!! ☺ (Continued on Page 7 ☺...>>>)

egetarians do not eat meat, fish or poultry. Among the many reasons for being a vegetarian are health, compassion for animals, and religious beliefs. Recent research commissioned by the Eating Better Alliance discovered that:
• 25% of the British public say they are eating less meat than a year ago
• 34% are willing to consider eating less meat
* One in six (17%) young people say they don’t eat any meat
A vegetarian diet can meet all known nutrient needs. The key to a healthy vegetarian diet, as with any other diet, is to eat a wide variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, plenty of leafy greens, whole grain products, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Sweets and fatty foods should be limited. Statistically, if you choose the diet above you are choosing an option which should boost your chances of living a long and healthy life.

Compared to meat eaters vegetarians have up to 30% less heart disease, up to 40% less cancer, 20% less premature death, less obesity and lower blood pressure...but why? Well the good vegetarian diet outlined above contains more carbohydrate, more vitamin C, more fibre and more cancer fighting phytochemicals than one where a high proportion of the calories come from meat.
So why not make your greengrocer your new best friend this month and get cooking in celebration of all things veggie?! By Louise Addison
Aubergine & chickpea curry To celebrate National Vegetarian Week try this light and tasty curry Prep: 20 mins Cooking time: 50 mins Serves 6
Ingredients 2 aubergines 2 tbsp sunflower oil, plus extra to serve, if you like 1 tbsp brown or black mustard seeds 10-12 curry leaves, plus extra to serve, if you like 2 onions, finely chopped 2 dried chillies, chopped 4 tsp garam masala 2 tsp ground coriander 2 tsp turmeric 400ml can coconut milk 6 tomatoes, quartered 400g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
Method Chop the aubergine into large chunks (about 1 inch / 2.5cm across). Heat ½ tbsp oil in a large non-stick pan, and brown half the aubergine chunks for 2-3 mins on each side until golden brown and crisp all over. Remove to a plate, then repeat with another ½ tbsp oil and the remaining aubergines, then set everything aside.
Add the remaining tbsp oil to the pan with the mustard seeds and curry leaves and fry for 30 secs until fragrant. Stir in the onions and continue cooking until they are softened and beginning to brown. Add the dried chillies and spices with a spoonful of the thick coconut milk from the top of the can, then fry for 1 min more. Add the remaining coconut milk, tomatoes and half a can of water. Simmer for 25-30 mins until thick and saucy.

ur society revolves around consumption. We increasingly buy more things but own them for a shorter time. Items with only slight defects are often discarded and many get thrown away within the space of a year. Wobbly chair, broken zip, toaster on the blink? Few people even consider the possibility of repair, in fact most people no longer know how to repair things even if they want to. This is where a local Repair Café can help. Repair Cafés are taking off in a big way everywhere. They are simply local meeting places where neighbours can learn to repair their broken items themselves, with support in a relaxed atmosphere.

The May Fair will be held on Bank Holiday Monday 5th May, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Pavilion.
This annual celebration of Llandrindod is designed to showcase local crafts, skills, clubs, trades, shops, businesses and good causes. The fair will be opened by Kirsty Williams, AM, and the Town Crier. ENTRY IS FREE and all are welcome!
The May Fair is organised by Trawsnewid Llandrindod Transition and supported by Llandrindod Wells Town Council. The fair will take place the day after the Food and Drink Festival organised by Llandrindod Town Council.
Repair Cafés are run by volunteers who still possess practical know-how such as craftspeople, carpenters or electricians, tinkerers or DIYers. These sometimes undervalued people can greatly contribute towards making our society more sustainable. They can teach people to see their possessions in a new light and appreciate their value again. Repair Cafés aspire to change people's mindset but do much more than that. Waste mountains shrink, CO2 emissions are cut, raw materials and energy for new products are reduced. Valuable practical knowledge is passed on and social contacts in the community are improved.

Llandrindod Transition is keen to start up the town's very own Repair Café and would love to hear the opinions of local people. If you would like to know more, or would enjoy showing people how to repair their own things for just a few hours a month, come and talk to us during the Llandrindod May Fair at the Pavilion on May 5th. ROYAL VOLUNTARY SERVICE goes on a MAN-HUNT! Have you ever thought about older people in your area that might need help? As we get older, our mobility may decline and getting out and about can get difficult, especially in rural areas. Some older people have no means of transport and can’t walk easily. Can they get to their doctor or hospital appointments? Can they get their shopping? Does anyone visit them? Do they feel lonely or isolated? Royal Voluntary Service is a volunteer organisation that enriches the lives of older people and their families across Britain. We support older people by giving time and practical help to help them get the best from life. Our volunteers – ordinary men and women of all ages and ethnicities – love spending time with the older people. Through them, we want to help create a society where everyone feels valued and involved whatever their age. Sharing time with older people is enjoyable, rewarding and inspiring for all of us, young
and old. By volunteering now you can help today’s generation of older people live and enjoy the kind of old age they deserve.
From our Llandrindod -based office, we cover all of Powys. Our Service Managers and volunteers help older people in their homes or hospital, carry out our Meals on Wheels services, and run local lunch clubs. We try to help every elderly person who needs us, and place each volunteer where they will be most happy – whether this is visiting, fundraising, helping to find new volunteers, delivering Meals on Wheels or driving. All our volunteers are offered training, full support and are reimbursed for any out of pocket expenses. We are always looking for volunteers.
This is the year of our Man Hunt! We would very much like to
see more men volunteering to help more older men in the area. But, male or female, young or old, with or without transport, please think about volunteering with us.

herapies are good at maintaining good health and the right therapist is key to your getting the best outcome. They allow you space to deal with often busy and stressful lives. Relaxing and valuing your health are excellent reasons to visit a therapist. More often though, we see clients when conventional medicine has failed, when people have chronic health problems or when they are facing difficult life events or choices. Complementary therapies complement orthodox care, they don’t replace it. Therapists also don’t diagnose specific illnesses. They may recognise particular symptoms and recommend you go to your doctor for a test and if you’re worried, the doctor should be your first port of call anyway. You are going to a therapist for a complementary therapy. These treat you in different ways and the practitioner will work in partnership with you to find the best way of helping.
Finding a therapist Personal recommendation is useful though your problem may be different from that of your friend and your view of the therapist may not be the same. If you know which therapy you want, look at the relevant professional association’s list for a local therapist. Look out for adverts in papers, leaflets, cards etc. If booking into a spa or salon, try to speak to the therapist rather than the receptionist. Make sure in your initial phone call that the person has experience and interest in your problem.
At a basic level, if you have a problem with men, you may be more comfortable seeing a woman therapist, if you have problems with women, perhaps better see a male therapist. When you find a contact number be

hatever your opinion of roses, there’s no denying that this flower is the epitome of traditional British gardening, and maybe for some that’s just the problem. For some people the memories of insipid flowers sitting above leggy stalks and diseased leaves is enough to put them off ever planting another rose bush again. Classified as a woody perennial, with over a hundred species it is still by far one of Britain’s favourite plants. Native to China, the humble rose grows well in our climate, where the cool moist winters and warm (ish) summers mean that as long as we don’t experience too much rain (which can cause petals to fuse together before fully opening) plants should live happily for many years. That said they are not ‘forever plants’ and should not be held on to for sentimental reasons. I’ve removed no end of beds planted up in the 60’s with nothing more than clumps of baked clay soil as their companion.
Roses are best planted bare root between November and February but are most often purchased containerised when in flower
during the summer months. If well watered in their first year, roses planted this way should establish well. Plant slightly deeper than you think you need, burying the graft (woody knuckle) fractionally below the soil.
Humans are not the only admirers of roses and they can suffer from numerous pests and diseases so prepare yourself for battle. Problems include; brown scale, rose aphids, rose leaf-rolling sawfly, rose dieback, rose powdery mildew, rose blackspot and rose rust. That said there are disease-resistant varieties, and prevention is always better than cure. If planted in good soil (they don’t mind heavy clay) and in a well prepared hole with some homemade compost or manure, then fed in March with a special rose fertiliser before another layer of compost or manure is placed on top, and watered well they will provide you with a long lasting combination of colour and scent.

Ground cover roses such as the ‘flower carpet range’ are great for covering banks and are extremely low maintenance, or try an avenue of standard roses such as ‘Winchester Cathedral’ which look fabulous when under planted with lavender or lush low growing evergreens. Finally for a wonderful thornless variety try Rosa ‘Mortimer Sackler’.
For added interest, why not grow two varieties together which complement each other, or flower at different times for lengthier impact.

Superfast Cymru is coming to the Royal Welsh
The latest in a whole range of benefits brought by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society to Mid Wales is the early roll out of superfast broadband to the showground and consequently the surrounding area.
Business and local residents in Builth Wells and Llanelwedd will soon benefit from Superfast Cymru – a fibre upgrade enabling superfast internet connection and improved broadband speeds.
As one of the Powys Local Growth Zones, the area has always been in-line to benefit from this enhanced communications infrastructure, but thanks to the hard work and negotiations between the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, BT and Welsh Government, these plans have been brought forward and will see the showground and local area able to subscribe and take advantage of these improvements this spring.
Always striving to be at the forefront of technology, the society was adamant that the showground should be able to offer businesses and the conference venues on site the very best facilities available. Superfast broadband enables businesses to work faster and more efficiently, benefitting from faster upload and download speeds and reducing the need to travel, helping to create jobs and cut costs – a huge advantage in rural mid Wales.
The society hopes that the superior internet speeds will also be used to provide free WiFi spots around the showground during the summer show in July, going a little way to help ease the congestion of the mobile phone signal during that incredibly busy week.
The knock-on effect of these developments at the showground means that the local area benefits too. Various green communications cabinets in and around the town are currently being upgraded and once the service becomes live, customers will be able to place an order to take full advantage of the improved internet speeds.
“Having superfast broadband installed at the showground so soon is very exciting and as a local person, I am really pleased that this upgrade will benefit both the society and the local area.” says Steve Hughson, Chief Executive of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society. “Ensuring businesses and homes in mid Wales have access to new technology advances is essential to keeping our local economy buoyant and our communities alive.”

on’t move on to the next article yet, this could be important. You will get a chance to:
• Exercise your right to vote for a political party or independent candidate whose views about the future of the European Union (and U.K. involvement therein) most closely match your own.
You can thereby influence (in some measure):
• A vast open market (as important to businesses in Mid Wales as the rest of the U.K.) • The free movement of labour between member states and the regulations that govern this. • The Common Agricultural Policy (so vital to our region) • Aspects of the legal and judicial system under which we all live.
On May 22nd you will NOT be asked to elect a local constituency member but instead be faced with a choice of political parties and independent candidates standing on an all-Wales basis to elect four MEPs (Members of the European Parliament).
Proportional representation is in use based on a quota system called the D’Hondt method (lots about this on the internet if you have a serious amount of time of your hands!). However it is enough to know that you will have one vote and parties will have their slate of candidates printed underneath the party name in order of who will be elected first.
We have been trading online for ten years selling quality prescription glasses for up to 70%
less than high street opticians.
We have now opened a shop on Builth Wells high street but selling at Internet prices.
It is possible for a party to gain more than one seat (all four indeed with an extraordinary landslide!) depending on the proportion of the vote gained. However the last election using this method in Wales (European Election 2009) elected four different parties (Conservatives 21% Labour 20%, Plaid Cymru 18%, UKIP 12%). These parties have already registered to stand on May 22nd in Wales as have two parties not elected in 2009 (Liberal Democrats 10% and Greens 5%). The registration process for parties and independent candidates is on-going at the time of writing and other parties and independent candidates may well contest the election.
All you need to save huge amounts is a copy of your prescription. Quality frames from
of money
just £24.95
including lenses custom made to your prescription.
Come in and see us
Why not turn up and exercise your democratic rights on May 22nd? There is no need to consider tactics; just choose the party or independent candidate you like best and let Monsieur D’Honte do the rest. Happy voting!

BUDGET 2014 SUMMARY
10% Off
From Haydn Lewis, Your Local Independent Financial Advisor
Mr Osborne announced that “this is a budget for the makers, doers, and the savers” and a brief summary of some of the main points of the budget are detailed below 1. Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs).
The attractiveness and flexibility of ISAs will increase from 1st July 2014. • A new simpler version will be introduced – the New ISA or NISA. • The limit will be increased from £11880 to £15000. • The different limits for Cash ISAs and Stocks and Shares ISAs will be removed and transfers from one to the other will be made easier 2. Flexible Pension Benefits.
From 27th March 2014.
• Clients with £30000 or less in all their pension funds can choose to take them as a lump sum. Before the change, they could only take pensions funds that in total didn’t exceed £18000 as a lump sum.
• Clients can take up to three personal pension funds of £10000 or less as a lump sum. This includes group personal pensions provided by their employer. Before the change, they could only take up to two personal pension funds of up to £2000 each as a lump sum.
For Advertising, Editorial & Listings, contact us on
• Clients can take 25% of their maturing pension funds tax free. They will have to pay tax on the rest of these lump sums at their marginal tax rate. This taxable lump sum could take their income into a higher tax rate.
Page 18
• Clients who put their pension fund into an “income drawdown” product will be able to take more income from their fund.
From April 2015
The Government is considering allowing Clients to take their entire defined contribution pension fund as a lump sum from the age of 55.
At the moment, Clients can usually take up to 25% of their pension fund as a tax free cash sum but the remainder would normally have to be used to purchase an annuity.
However, only the first 25% will be tax free – the remainder will be taxed as income at a Client’s marginal rate of tax.
3. Other Changes
• A new Pensioner Bond with market leading rates will be available from January 2015 to all people over 65 – but with a £10000 limit in each.
• The cap on the amount of Premium Bonds an individual can hold will rise from £30000 to £40000 in June 2014 and to £50000 in 2015. The number of £1 million winners will also be doubled from August 2014.
• The Personal allowance will rise to £10500 from April 2015 but the basic rate band will narrow slightly to £31785. As a result, 40% tax will star t on an income of £42285.

Child Safety Week Did you know that accidental injury is the second biggest killer of children in the UK? Only childhood cancer accounts for more deaths. Every week in the UK one child dies in a preventable accident, and around 300 children end up in Accident and Emergency departments every day. Childhood accidents cost the NHS over £275 million a year. Children from the poorest UK families are 13 times more at risk, and are also more likely to be admitted to hospital with accidental injuries. Child Safety Week runs from 23rd – 29th June and is organised by The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT). They stress that although the number of children killed in accidents is shrinking due to everimproving emergency medical care, nearfatal accidents can leave lifelong mental as well as physical scars, and put families through hell.
CAPT run awareness campaigns to explain how most accidents can be easily prevented. Parents often misunderstand the dangers their children face daily. For example, a child is hundreds of times more likely to be killed crossing a road than by another person. But the media focus on scare-stories, resulting in some parents over-estimating the risk of stranger danger and underestimate the risks involved in more mundane scenarios.
CAPT’s vision and values are: “We want children to lead active, healthy lives – not ‘wrapped in cotton wool’. Children need to experiment, play and take risks.
Page 19
mwcf@icloud.com / 01597 829789
But there’s a balance to be struck. No parent wants their child disabled or killed in an accident that can be prevented. So we help people understand the real risks to children’s safety; and help them gain skills in managing those risks. We want every child to have equal life chances, so we tailor support for the poorest families, whose children are at greatest risk”
As mornings can be a particularly stressful and accident-prone time, for this year’s campaign CAPT have enlisted the help of the Safety Superheroes, who will do battle with the villainous Morning Mayhem! Watch out for them in events this June.
Here are three top tips to keep your kids safe! • Make sure they STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN when crossing the road on the way to school (and again on their way home). • Teach your kids about burn and scald risks: Don’t overfill the kettle, never use a knife to fish toast out of the toaster, take care with hair-straighteners, and always turn them off after use. • Make sure your child knows how to call for emergency help - they might save someone’s life!
Check out CAPT’s website www.capt.org.uk. Remember: Most safety is just common sense. Children’s brains are their most important defence against accidents, so let’s teach them to THINK. - By Louise Addison

The Welsh 2 Day Enduro – Biggest and Best! 26 & 27 June Riders also have the chance to really challenge their skills on closed ‘special tests’ over farmland and rough ground where their bike handling ability allows them to try and set the fastest time they can. These areas are the only parts of the course where spectators are encouraged, and the local St John’s Ambulance are on hand to make sure any mishaps are quickly sorted out!
Ask any enduro rider in the UK what is the quickest event to fill up its entry list every year? They will tell you ‘The “Welsh”!’
This year, entries for the 150 mile a day event sold out in less than an hour. The event, organised by the Welsh 2 Day Enduro Committee is based at Llandrindod Wells, and sees riders from all over the world trekking to Mid-Wales to take part in what is for many an annual pilgrimage.
Competitors and supporters from all over the British Isles, Europe, and Australia will be joined once again by a small contingent from the Falkland Islands. The riders negotiate a 150 mile single lap starting at the Lakeside, flagged away each year by the Mayor of ‘Llandod’. Riders do not race, but compete against the clock, making sure they maintain a steady average on the roads, before venturing into forestry and byways – riders face the additional challenge of maintaining the road legal bikes themselves with limited assistance.
The attraction of the event for the riders is that the event maintains very much a community spirit. The influx of several thousand people is a welcome boost for the local economy. Added to the attraction is that local residents often make a point of watching the bikes pass their homes, checking the rider’s name against the event programme before a wave - and they are away! The event could not take place without the hard work of the organising team, sponsors ET James motorcycles of Rhayader and Steve Plain Motorcycles of Llandrindod Wells, Powys and Ceredigion County Councils, the Motor Sports Association, Dyfed Powys Police and the residents and landowners along the route.
