The Focus Interviews...
'It isn't a hospice; it isn't a hospital, it is a cancer support centre... it provides support not only to patients but also to their carers and relatives'
T
says Reg.
he Bracken Trust Cancer Support Centre has, since 1995, offered emotional and psychological support to those affected by cancer in Llandrindod Wells and the surrounding area. Its centre on Cefnllys Lane stands in well-tended grounds and conveys a sense of warmth and tranquillity. Trust Chairman, Reg Cawthorne, explains that:
This support is tailored to individuals’s requirements. Outreach Nurse Helen Davies says, 'People come at different stages of their treatment. Some come at the point of diagnosis; others don't feel they need support until their treatment is finished.'
‘the atmosphere is intended to be welcoming and informal, more or less an extension of your living room', where the emphasis is placed on the person rather than the illness.
the holistic service it provides, and it was invited to take part in a pilot scheme for the next stage of the awards. Macmillan Cancer Support also funds the information officer at the centre who helps patients find more specialised knowledge and help.
The Bracken Trust relies largely upon fundraising (it requires over £240,000 per year to run) and has recently held coffee mornings, golf days, bike rides and a ladies fashion show. 'We feel we are a community resource,' says Reg, 'The community owns us, and we want to be involved with it.'
The Big Lottery funds nurse Helen Davies in her outreach work, which supports people who are unable to attend the centre due to illness, remoteness or lack of transport and provides cancer awareness information, particularly targeted at men and the rural community.
The Trust is always in need of volunteers to welcome patients to its centre, to garden and to provide a social lunch. Anyone who feels they would benefit from the Trust's services should drop in for a chat or call 01597 823646 for an appointment. The web address is ww.brackentrust.org.uk.
'For some cancers, the earlier the diagnosis, the more successful treatment can be', says Helen, 'So it's important that people are aware of the signs and symptoms.' In order to publicise these signs, risk factors and available support, the Trust visits community events such as WI meetings and livestock markets. Staff have facilitated the development of an information pack for teachers to support pupils affected by cancer.

According to a recent survey carried out by the Money Advice Service, more than half of UK adults are struggling to keep up with bills and debt repayments. So what are people doing to raise a bit of extra cash? Over the last few years the number of people using social networking sites has risen dramatically and in turn the number of people using sites such as Facebook as a platform for buying and selling has also risen. Rather than throwing out their old or unwanted items, more people are realising that there is money to be made from selling their stuff on to others. A quick search on Facebook throws up hundreds of Buy, Sell & Swap groups and Llandrindod Wells alone has a handful of groups, some with over 2500 members.
Ebay had always been my site of choice when it came to buying and selling online simply because I didn’t know anything else but now I realise I’ve been missing a trick. By using one of the 10/10/13

more local groups such as those on Facebook there are no fees to be paid, no postage costs, you can set an asking price without having to sit out a nailbiting auction and one of the not so obvious benefits has been getting to know other people in my community who I might not have met otherwise. Just a few weeks ago I sold some baby items online to another local mum and made a new friend when we met up to exchange the goods. Lisa, mother of two, from Llandrindod, is an avid fan of sell swap sites, “They make buying kids clothes and toys affordable and the green side is appealing by keeping things local and reusing them you are reducing your carbon footprint”.
Upcycling is all the rage at the moment and where else can you find a plethora of amazing pieces crying out for a lick of chalk paint at a snip of the price you’d pay for them new? Sarah, mother of two, from Llandrindod says, “Buying new seems silly when there are almost pristine bits and pieces going for a bargain. For furniture etc you can also find cool stuff to upcycle, although as it’s becoming more popular now it’s hard to get in first before everyone else!” So, next time you’re thinking of taking a trip to the dump or throwing something out remember the old adage ‘One man’s rubbish is another man’s

when conventional medicine has no answers. After all, our body and our lives are our responsibility; no one else’s and our choice of treatments should be as wide and well informed as possible. Catherine Allan, therapist at Mid Wales Therapies.
With Catherine Allan
Doctor Vs Therapist?
M
any years ago, I was standing outside a shop chatting to a therapist I knew. She was complaining about a doctor and his attitude to therapists and illness. I then went into the shop and by chance was accosted by that same doctor who complained about a therapist and their irresponsible effect on patients who stop taking their medication and following the recommended treatment. (This is something no responsible therapist would ever advise and is against the rules of most professional associations.) I got quite cross with both of them. Therapists and doctors may have a patient or client in common but our spheres of expertise are different. Not better or worse, just different. The choice is always presented in the popular press and media, as well as in ordinary conversations, as if the only choice is one between a complementary therapist and the doctor. Not so. The clue is in the title, ‘complementary.’ We complement orthodox medical treatment. We don’t replace it. Further, most therapies don’t treat the same body systems or in the same way as conventional medicine. Most complementary therapists diagnose and treat mind and spirit (the body’s bio-energetic systems which affect the physical ones) and explore the lifestyle of a client before treatment. Stimulating the body and mind’s own considerable repair systems is what therapists do. Finding the person and method which does it best for you, whether doctor and / or therapist is your important responsibility. Use common sense. Conventional medicine is good at emergency care and has a formidable array of drugs and surgical procedures to treat us. It is less good when facing unhappiness, dealing with difficult emotions, enabling lifestyle changes or at helping when things
Catherine Allan mid wales therapies
‘Stimulating the body and mind’s own considerable repair systems is what therapists do.’ just don’t get better. How wonderful it would be if both the therapist and doctor could work together so that the best outcome for the client / patient could be achieved, so that they could be treated holistically. There would have to be quite a shift both in perceptions and financing to allow this to happen not least because doctors are paid are by our taxes, therapists are paid for directly by clients. Therapists spend a lot of time with a client finding out what they need to know to help them best, doctors often only get ten minutes. Conventional NHS treatment is vital for some people’s recovery but so are therapies for others. Healing, within whatever therapy it is presented, will bring the opportunity for change in a person’s condition. Accepting the invitation to change is the difficult bit. We are creatures of habit and change can be threatening. Old habits, the ones which made us ill, are hard to recognise and then to break. They feel familiar and safe and changing them may need a variety of techniques and take more time than we have patience for. Over the years, I have come to see that complementary therapies and NHS treatment can truly both work together. The right therapy can support conventional treatments to make them work better and shorten recovery time. Therapies are very good at preventing illness and at enabling us to take control of our emotions, our problems and our recovery. They can also help us to explore options or come to terms with events

F o o d ie s ’F o c u s Nice but Naughty Who Banned Twelfth Night? And what happened to the cake? From Plum Porridge to Plum Pudding to Christmas Pudding, Boiled Plum Cake and Boiled Fruit Cake to Twelfth Night Cake to Christmas Cake. The Focus investigates...
We’ve been eating puddings and cakes laden with dried fruit for thousands of years. Not only were they symbolic treats at times of religious celebration, they also helped us let off steam and our hair down.
Whether to line our stomachs after a fast and before a feast, or to chose a lord, King or Queen for a day, festive cakes play a part in how we celebrate. Ending a fast with porridge on Christmas Eve was an early tradition. As more spices, fruit and nuts were added it made sense to put this stiffer mixture in cloth and boil it, and so Christmas Pudding came about. Later, around the 16th Century, wheatflour replaced oatmeal, butter was added and eggs to hold it all together. This became boiled plumcake. But a few people were much better off than most and they could afford ovens in their castles and fine homes; so they could bake cakes. Special cakes were made for Easter and Christmas, rich with fruit and a topping of marzipan or almond paste.
The Christmas version had dried fruits and spices to represent the exotic spices of the East, and the gifts of the Wise Men. Spices were brought
to Britain by the Crusaders coming back from the wars in the Holy Land in the 12th Century. But it was not a cake for Christmas Day – it was a cake for Twelfth Night. It was a Twelfth Night Cake. Twelfth Night is on January 5th – for centuries the traditional last day of the Christmas season. It was a time for having a great feast, and a cake was an essential part of the festivities. It’s a tradition that can be found in different countries and at different social levels all over the world.
Part of the tradition was to put a dried bean into the cake. Your guests would each be given a slice of cake and whoever got the bean or pea was King or Queen of the Revels and everyone had to do as they said.
In smaller homes, with simpler cakes that were shared over the 12 days of Christmas, the person with the bean became the guardian of the family for the year. This festive cake was revived in Britain at the end of the 17th century and became a key part of Twelfth Night partying. In the richer houses the cakes became extravagant – huge with elaborate decoration and miniature toys for the guests to amuse themselves with. Twelfth Night is the Church festival of the Epiphany, the traditional day when Christians celebrate the arrival of the Magi or Three Kings at Bethlehem. It was the time when Christmas gifts were exchanged and the feast was marked by religious observance, Church activities and the blessing of the home. But after the Reformation these customs were banned by the Puritans, leaving Twelfth Night to become a time of mischief and over indulgence - the Feast of Fools,
where a bean in the cake decided who would be the Lord of Misrule and could expect his people to perform any craziness he should ordain.
Alongside Co-op Store Llandrindod
By 1870 Queen Victoria announced that she felt it was inappropriate to hold such an unchristian festival and banned Twelfth Night as a feast day. Rather than have to throw away the decorations and lose the income from baking Twelfth Cakes, the bakers and confectioners began to make fruitcake decorated with snowy scenes and sold them for December Christmas parties instead – which is why we have the Christmas Cake
As for a recipe – find or stick to the one that suits your taste. But many recipes do recommend making your Christmas Cake at least four weeks in advance. And ‘feed’ your cake at least once a week with a little Brandy, if that suits your taste. And if you want to have a Feast of Fools with a Lord and Lady of misrule in your own home on Twelfth Night - simply add a single dried bean to your recipe. - Best wishes for the festive season from a Focus Foodie.

Ashfield Community Enterprise is a not-forprofit project situated in Howey, just outside Llandrindod. It is a Community Land Trust and through its shareholders own, run and manage a 7.5acre site which grows produce, plants ‌ and people! Using organic principles a dedicated on-site team - made up of employees, apprentices and volunteers come together to support and maintain the project. Ashfield has a great many partner organisations and these link-ups are mutually important for both parties; it gives the boost to manpower the project requires to maintain itself and simultaneously offers a conduit for Ashfield’s partners to provide their learners with a workplace based experience. These learners join the Ashfield team and work tirelessly on all manner of tasks, all equally vital to ensure the project succeeds. Cultivating and growing fruit, veg and plants to sell via the Ashfield Shop is key and offers a unique slant on horticultural work. The shop itself acts as a way to give experience in a retail environment. Ashfield has a reputation for great customer service and marketing, and learners can gain these skills whilst also helping to generate the much needed funds to support the project.
There are myriad of office and admin responsibilities where attaining new skills, developing and expanding CVs, or providing an opportunity for people to get into a work routine shines through.
One of the more successful partnership link-ups has been with Mid Wales based learning provider Powys Training, which offers work based learning opportunities to people and businesses. Scores of successful placements have come to Ashfield and the project has seen people grow as fast as the crops. They develop whilst on site, and work towards nationally recognised qualifications. Ashfield welcomes all at anytime especially if you wish to share your skills with us by volunteering in any capacity. To contact Ashfield: 01597 829689 To contact Powys Training: 0800 328 0881

idy your borders to discourage pests and disease. Remove and compost the dying plants, prune roses, cut down herbaceous stems and clear the remains of annuals, but leave a little cover of the perennials for wildlife shelter - ladybirds will thank you by disposing of your aphids next year. Clean out the greenhouse - wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools. A well cleaned greenhouse prevents pests, especially if you also fumigate it - following the manufacturers’ instructions. Wash the windows to allow maximum light in.
Drain and lag pipes, taps, water pumps etc to avoid damage caused by freezing temperatures. Bubble wrap is ideal if you have any spare.

Plant bare-rooted trees, tulip bulbs for a spring display, shrubs, hedging and roses as well as fruit trees and bushes. Rake fallen leaves to let light and air to your lawns and plants, and to discourage slugs, snails and all sorts of fungal diseases.
Fallen, damp leaves are nature’s own soil conditioners so don’t burn them, compost them - for at least a year.
Prepare your soil for easier Spring planting. Dig bare beds with compost, manure, leaf mould. Ideally you should use a spade to dig and bury a layer of organic matter below the surface. But you can just mulch the bed. Let the cold

A pile of sticks and logs will make a wonderful home for hibernating hedgehogs and the like, so don’t be too diligent on the tidying front.
Try and keep off your lawn when it’s frosted, snow-covered or very wet, as it causes damage and can even lead to infection. If the weather isn’t too bad then you can airate your lawn with a few prods of a fork. Book your mower in for a service.

Tour of Britain
The Tour of Britain 2013 came into Mid Wales for two stages in September.
Rally of Great Britain
Sir Bradley Wiggins was making his long awaited comeback having missed the Tour de France. Mark Cavendish returned again, looking to prove his speed to the competition. The thousands of fans adorning the streets were not disappointed as Manxman Cavendish was the victor in what was Stage 4 of the Tour. His team, Omega Pharma Quick-Step, led him out superbly as he sprinted to victory in the picturesque Snowdonia National Park. The course was initially headed by a breakaway of 11 riders all the way until just a kilometre from the end when they were swallowed up by the peloton. Stage 5 saw a mountainous 177km from Machynlleth to Caerphilly. The finish saw two laps up Caerphilly mountains that was won by Irishman Sam Bennett. He followed up a second place on Stage 2 with a win that saw him escape the clutches of the pack with only 100m to the line. That was that, the Tour's visit to Wales was over. With speculation that the Tour will be revamped next year, as the organisers; SweetSpot, could be replaced, we may not see the likes of Wiggo and Cav in Wales next year.

The WRC Rally of Great Britain is of course an eagerly awaited event in the motoring calendar of Wales.
This years it is taking place between 14-17 November. The Rally will be staying in North Wales as the Service Park will be situated in Deeside, Flintshire. There will be a chance for Mid-Walians to see the cars and drivers however as there are service stops in both Llanidloes and Newtown. Last year the Fin - Jari-Matti Latvala - triumphed for the second year in a row. This year, the Frenchman, Sebastian Ogier has already won the WRC 2013. He is seen as the successor to the best ever rally driver, Sebastien Loeb. Latvala is only third in the standings but could improve if he were to make it a hat-trick of victories here in Wales. Of course thousands of fans will watch cars scythe their way through the forests and dirt tracks of North Wales, as the Welsh rally is always well supported. Taking part will also be a Welshman - Elfyn Evans is based in Dolgellau, Gwynedd. His best achievement to date is finishing a creditable sixth in the Rally of Sardinia. This was achieved having never before driven a WRC car.
