TK Cattle pays big $ for "Deadwood"
02/05/21 - All eyes and ears were on the Poss Angus Bull Sale outside of the small town of Scotia in central Nebraska. A bull there that had caught the attention of many cattlemen and women, near and far. He checked all the boxes. This bull was the lot 1 and lead off. When the chant of the auctioneer ended and the dust settled, “Poss Deadwood” commanded a selling price of $900,000, going to TK Cattle of Menard, TX. Poss Angus is a first-generation operation owned and operated by Danny & Kristi Poss. Danny started with Angus 30 years ago while still in college and this year marked their 21st bull sale. His goal is to raise superior Angus genetics based on economically important traits. Cattle must be fault free with moderate birth weights and excellent performance. These cattle are raised on high roughage and get plenty of exercise to ensure predictability and longevity which turns into customer satisfaction. They felt blessed and fortunate to have raised and sold a bull of this caliber. Nolan recognized Deadwood at calving time. While tagging and weighing him, Nolan sensed they had something big. He called his dad to say 399 had a pretty good calf that was very stout. From then on, Deadwood was always 3 steps ahead of his herdmates. A year later, the DNA numbers came back for all of the recorded traits
and that’s when Deadwood separated himself from the rest. His mother, Poss Ellunamere 399, had good balanced numbers, nothing crazy. But Deadwood’s DNA numbers were exceptional. People started to see Deadwood show up regularly in data search results. Then the calls started coming and picked up pace when Poss’s hosted their first female sale last fall. That day, Reverse Rocking R Ranch of NM selected Deadwood’s mother as the top seller that day for $22,000. Picture day was a special day. Deadwood walked into the pen and popped a pose right off the bat. That picture hit social media and the buzz was on! At sale time about 5,000 straws of semen had already been ordered with production going well. Now all orders have been transferred to the new buyer, TK Cattle. David Powell, of TK Cattle, is excited. While doing an early sort of EPD’s with specific parameters, Deadwood’s name surfaced in every search. “That‘s a bull that checks all the boxes. He‘s an all-around individual that people have been waiting for. Great phenotype combined with a no hole’s genomic profile makes him a bull that should work for everyone”, David said. With this sale, Deadwood is now ranked #3 in the Angus breed. It will be fun and exciting to watch the future of Deadwood and his progeny on down the road.
