RESOLUTE FARMS RACING Resolute Farms is the home of Resolute Farms Racing, LLC., and Cross Iron Racing. We breed and train the finest of the Russian and old Polish bloodlines to produce talented, beautiful and enduring race and performance Arabians, horses able to compete in a variety of activities nationally and internationally. By some miraculous circumstance, we are also the proud breeders and owners of the incomparable young stallion, RFR The Iceman, to our knowledge, the only true purebred blue-eyed, triple registered, overo Arabian in the United States. Like many such other enterprises, ours began with a long deferred dream and a chance encounter. After years of working and living in cities, I had finally taken the plunge, purchasing a 110 year old red brick farm house, out buildings, woods and pasture land on one of the huge hills northwest of Wausau, Wisconsin. The house had no running water, two wood stoves for heat, and one electric light bulb. The barn had no electricity, and there was an outhouse. It didn’t matter. I was home! The paddock fences went up as quickly as the plumbing went into the house and I started looking for my first horse. Naturally, it turned out not to be the Arabian, Thoroughbred or even the Connemara I thought I was looking for… it was a Mustang straight off the range and he was a Bashkir Curly. I enjoyed training him, but I also knew that he was not suited to the activities that I wanted to pursue with a horse. I went looking for that Arabian again. What I found was a yearling filly named Rainbui, who turn out to be what is called a “foundation mare”. Mares of this caliber are not commonly talked about, but in fact, rarely discovered. She is one of those extraordinary horses that every foal is a more perfect amalgam of herself and the sire and she just keep out producing expectations. When I finally raced her as a filly she turned out to be one of the two fastest mares of her generation, consistently out running the boys, and she brought to the breeding shed the bloodlines of the immortals: Khemosabi, Cognac, Aladdinn and Bask. Originally I thought I was going to use her for endurance and trail, until I took an unexpected trip to Colorado and happened to stop at a ranch with a sign at the entrance said, “Arabians for Sale”. How could I resist? Their horses were wonderful, mares galloping free in huge open field with eager weanlings by their sides, pastures of yearlings and two-year old, and…..a race track. A race track with Arabians being trained on it, trained to run. I had never even heard of racing Arabians, but there they were, three abreast, nostrils flaring, tails flying, coming down the final stretch. It was obvious to anyone watching, these horse were doing what they were born to do, run with the wind. I poured over every scrap of information I could find and bought my first “race-bred” broodmare in foal to a track record setting stallion. I went to track in Florida and Delaware to meet owners and trainers and eventually got my own trainers license. I bought a couple more mares bred to the best available stallions. I thought I was off to the races. Unfortunately that’s not exactly what happened. As usual, life intervened. Almost ten years later, I was finally able to return to this “new” passion with renewed interest and this time with some of the horses I had been able to breed during that lost decade, horses bred with an eye towards performance, beauty and versatility. During this period I bred and sold a very limited number of horses, many of whom began to approximate the ideal for which I was striving. One, for example went on to become a Champion CMO horse, one a competitive trail horse, one is in training for 100 mile endurance races, and one, the pure Russian stallion, RFR Polar Star, became a Regional Sport Horse Champion, Reserve Champion, and an exceptional stud for his new owner. Occasionally, we would condition for a new prospect on the crushed red granite roads that go on for miles around the farm and after a few months of up and down hills, wind sprints and starting from a stand still, we would go off to the races in Michigan or Minnesota. Sometimes we won, often we lost (and then it was usually us not the horse), but we always learned something to benefit to the program.
It never fails to amaze me what there is to learn from, and enjoy about, the people we meet when we’re in the company of horses. From the owners and the fans in the stands, to the trainers, jocks, grooms and exercise riders on the backside, they are a fascinating bunch. I won’t say there’s no politics or “discouraging words” among racing folk, they are an opinionated group, to say the least, but they are also incredibly helpful, quick to praise real quality and generally welcoming. Besides, it really is true, it’s never about whether you paid $5,000 or $25,000 for your handler, it’s simply which horse crosses the finish line first. It is also true that with rare, very rare, exceptions, theses horses are doing something they actually love to do. They are having fun. Our current breeding program includes stallions from the finest and most proven Russian and Polish lines bred to mares with pedigrees including Statistic, Wiking, Khemosabi, RD Five Star, Flaming Streak and other equally prestigious sire lines. Recently we seemed to have produced more colts than fillies, and the colts, like the breed as a whole seemed to be generally taller and possessed of better legs than we were seeing a couple decades ago. We strive to retain a refined “Arabian” head without coarseness, on a body that is graceful, balanced and capable of great athleticism. We believe we are succeeding. In addition to the incredible RFR The Iceman, we currently stand RFR Silver Crescent and our newest junior stallion, RFR Polar Reign. Silver Crescent, The Iceman, “Reigner”, the gelding Rain Buoy, and the filly Crimson Crescent are all either race ready or scheduled for race training this coming spring. Crescent is already a multiple race winner and we’re aiming for a stakes try for him this coming year. We have had many inquiries about The Iceman, especially when people see him at expositions and shows; he is “eye catching” to say the least. Just now we are not yet ready to part with him. Beyond his stunning appearance, he has true “Arabian” conformation, ability, a wonderful workman-like approach to training, and an affectionate and laid back attitude towards “his” humans. Other Arabians with “Sabino” white patterns generally have Khemosabi in their pedigree; he does not, and he is negative for the Sb1 gene which produces most white Arabian patterning. Genetically he is a rare and unique animal. Plus his breeding is truly impeccable for any Performance or Sport Horse activity. From racing to Dressage to Endurance. The last show judge said The Iceman had the only great trot out of all the Warmbloods, Thoroughbreds and other breeds he saw that day. He is that good. However we also “neversay-never”, and if the right offer were made by the right person, someone who could present The Iceman to the world as the rare ambassador for Arabians that he is, we would consider it. But for the time being, just get ready to put you $2 down on those “baby-blues” in The Iceman’s maiden race this coming spring. Bet you come home a winner! We already know we will!
