DEAR PROSPECTIVE STUDENT,

C

HOOSING WHERE TO ATTEND COLLEGE is a serious decision. Deciding

where you will live, what you will study, and whether or not you will work during college all have long-term consequences. But nothing is as important as whether or not a college will teach from a biblical worldview. At Spurgeon College, we take your spiritual formation seriously and have designed every aspect of the student experience to prepare you for kingdom impact regardless of where God calls you to serve. Among the questions you might ask when choosing a college are questions of why, what, and how—questions concerning purpose and method. Why does this institution exist? What opportunities does this institution offer? How will they equip me for the next twenty, thirty, or forty years of my life? At Spurgeon College, the answers to these questions coalesce in one, simple phrase: For The Kingdom. Founded in 2004 as Midwestern College, our undergraduate program was relaunched in 2018 as Spurgeon College. The Spurgeon name is not just derived from the fact that Midwestern Seminary owns the Spurgeon Library including 6,000-plus books and artifacts from his personal collection; rather, it is intended to highlight the person, Charles H. Spurgeon, and his character. We share Spurgeon’s passions, convictions, and commitment to serving the local church and to reaching the community and the world with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Certainly, Spurgeon was great in the pulpit, but he also founded some 66 different ministries to have maximum gospel-centered social and cultural impact. Among those was an affinity for education. Thus, it is the mission of Spurgeon College to educate the next generation of leaders to impact the world in the workforce. As Midwestern Seminary is known emphatically as being For the Church, Spurgeon College will be known emphatically for being For the Kingdom. The phrase speaks to the breadth of the ministry, and it also speaks to our hopefulness that from this place, indeed, the Kingdom will be shaped and expanded. Through our college, we will maintain a Bible-based, ministry-focused curriculum, in addition to degree options for those who are not called specifically to only local church service. It is our aim to raise up Kingdom-minded leaders for the church, marketplace, and educational institutions throughout the United States and abroad. Join us in Kansas City, and ensure your next four years count for what matters most.

SPURGEON COLLEGE EXISTS TO TRAIN MEN AND WOMEN TO BE PREPARED TO FOLLOW GOD’S CALL WHEREVER IT MAY LEAD.

UPON COMING TO SPURGEON, you will be equipped for life and ministry by a faculty who not only care about your studies, but your personal spiritual development as well. Our degree programs include the dual-major track, which focuses first on the study of God’s Word, and then branches out to professional training emphases such as business, counseling, music, and humanities. You will not only leave prepared to proclaim the gospel; you will be equipped to do so in any context the Lord places you, from the local church to the mission field to the marketplace.

WHO WAS CHARLES SPURGEON? CHARLES HADDON SPURGEON was a highly influential English Baptist preacher known

to many as the “Prince of Preachers.” He was the quintessential Kingdom-minded minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This bears out in his life in multiple ways, but there are three aspects that rise to the top for us.

SPURGEON WAS A CHURCHMAN He preached and ministered week-in and week-out for 38 years in a local church context and beyond, caring for the souls of ministers and parishioners alike. He was also a theologian for the church. His literary output was incomparable among anyone in church history. He was internationally known for defending the authority of Scripture, training ministers, and building up the church.

SPURGEON WAS A MINISTER OF MERCY He was known to have been involved in 66 different organizations, ministering to women and children, as well as the poor and downtrodden. Spurgeon was also a sort of pioneer abolitionist, a man before his time, defending the rights of the oppressed.

SPURGEON WAS AN EDUCATOR He was a “supernova” in the study and a voracious reader, known for reading up to six weighty theological books a week. This investment provided fodder for his substantial literary output. Spurgeon also established The Pastors’ College, founded to prepare ministers to go out into the harvest and plant churches locally and abroad.

Spurgeon was all these things and much more, but all told, he was nothing apart from Christ. We look to Spurgeon as he was looking to Christ. Indeed, we see through Spurgeon the Savior he loved. Thus, it is our joy and privilege to have our undergraduate college bear the Spurgeon name.

ALLIE BROOKENS BA, COUNSELING | 2020

"Many college students do not know what the next season of life will look like. For me, it happens to be graduate school, where I will pursue a Master's degree in Counseling. At Spurgeon, I've received a biblical foundation that has prepared me to study at a school that may not offer the same perspective. I have learned to be sustained by the Word and to use it as a filter and foundation for my life and, one day, I will be able to incorporate the same truth in the lives of my clients."

STEPHEN BROWN ACCELERATE PROGRAM | MAY 2020

"Training at Midwestern Seminary and Spurgeon College has been preparative in many ways. The two most significant ways have been the friends and mentors that I have gained throughout my journey here and the resources that I have received from classes, professors, events, and friends. These two things have given me a network of people to rely on, both current ministers who are an e-mail or call away, and Christian heavyweights of the past who are still speaking through their books and writings."
