MIDWEST MOMENT Recognizing Julia Mae Kendrick Preer The Longest Serving Soror in the Mighty Midwest When Julia Mae Kendrick Preer first stepped on the campus of Fisk University, in Nashville, Tennessee, she says she was excited to be a part of the community. “I was just happy to be on campus,” said Preer, “I hadn’t really thought about joining any groups or a sorority.” However, she says, she was familiar with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., having been in the “Delsprite” program while in high school. In 1943 she was initiated into the Alpha Beta chapter of Delta Sigma Theta and now, 70 years later, is still active. Soror Preer, who is a member of the Detroit Alumnae Chapter, was honored during the Sorority’s 51st National Convention in Washington, DC. On Monday, July, 15, 2013 Preer was one of the many sorors honored for 50 or more years in the Sorority. What’s more, with 70 years in the Sorority, Preer had the distinction of being the longest serving soror in the Midwest Region in attendance at the 51st National Convention. “I am proud and happy to have been able to be here,” said Preer, “The Lord blessed me and allowed me to live long enough to see this day.” In her 70 years in

the sorority, Soror Preer says she has seen a lot and while the organization has come a long way she says there is much more to do. Preer says members have to remember their history and the Sorority’s commitment to service. She also says the older sorors must serve as role models to the younger members in the sorority. Soror Preer says Delta Sigma Theta has Julia Mae Kendrick Preer grown and become a significant part of the Photo Courtesy of African-American Stephanie Stova" heritage. She says as long as members stay true to the core of their identity the organization will continue to be blessed in this next century. “God has been good to us.” by Tanisha Mallett Regional Co-Journalist

ILLINOIS ... IN REVIEW EAST ST. LOUIS ALUMNAE CHAPTER Ignite! Reflect! Renew! The East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter kicked off the start to the new sorority year with a retreat: 2013 Sister2Sister East St. Louis Alumnae Retreat – Ignite! Reflect! Renew! The weekend started Friday night with eating and fellowship at the Welcome Back Fish Fry! All those who came out renewed sisterly bonds, reflected on the 51st National Convention and inspired by chapter entertainment and, of course, those highly anticipated door prizes. The fun continued on Saturday with a morning meditation, a group, “Breakfast Wobble” and collecting star autographs all before 9:00 AM. The day continued with Delta leadership sessions which covered state/regional/ national goals, a review of the Sorority’s Code of Conduct and an overview of the LEAD Mentor Program. The day finished with a round of songs and chants that had sorors moving in one Delta chain. Rolling Up Our Sleeves and Ready to Work!

Greek Week

The Chicago Alumnae Chapter started off the 2013-2014 Sorority year ready to work and get involved in community service. Sorors greeted each other warmly as they entered, “D’Estee,” headquarters for the Chicago Alumnae Chapter, for the September chapter meeting. Many sorors say they were anxious to hear updates from the committees charged with planning and community programs during the upcoming Sorority year. The year started off with members walking in the annual United Negro College Fund Walk/ Ride/Bike-a-Thon to raise money for the United Negro College Fund. More than 50 members, and friends, walked – raising nearly $5,000 in support of UNCF.

Celebrates Delta

The Lambda Chapter is kicking off Delta Week - Fall 2013 with a week of programs and events to serve Chicago-land university communities. The theme of the week is “The Premiere” as the sorors seek to be a premiere collegiate chapter in the sorority. Being premiere, means being professional at all times, setting the example, being leaders on campus, and effort being given by all. Delta Week will offer five days of activities targeting thrusts of Educational Development, Economic Development, and Physical and Mental Health – Domestic Violence. Lambda wants the community to become a better you on the inside and outside.

Celebrating Women’s Equity Day Before the 2013-2014 Sorority year officially started, Evansville Alumnae Chapter was already at work and making history. For the first time in that city’s history, a predominately African American women’s organization was featured during the city of Evansville’s annual, “Women’s Equality Day” celebration. In August, the Women’s Equality Day Evansville committee recognized the Evansville Alumnae Chapter for its ongoing commitment to women and their educational, economic development, and social action needs. The annual event commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment and women’s past and ongoing efforts toward full equality. The guest speaker that day was esteemed soror, Dr. Julianne Malveaux, a renowned economist,

DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC.! author, commentator, activist, lecturer and civic leader. Dr. Malveaux talked about the great strides that have been made in the area of women’s equality but also talked about the work that remains. Malveaux said women remain the minority on corporate boards and on city and county councils. In addition, Malveaux said huge disparities still exist in earning power, and many women must choose between the need to work and the high costs of childcare. The Evansville Alumnae Chapter also sponsored its annual “Family Day in the Park” event on September 7th. For the first time, EAC sold mile-high strawberry shortcakes, red velvet cake pops and their version of “pickle mints” to the hundreds of participants attending the event. “Making money was secondary to supporting the Family Day in the Park event. The fellowship was great and Delta Sigma Theta remains a visible force in the community,” said EAC President Sabrina StewartThomas.

On August 3, 2013, the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter (IAC) volunteered at the Covering Kids & Families (CKF) 13th Annual Back-to-School Family Day. Covering Kids & Families of Indiana, Inc. is an outreach program, committed to ensuring all children and families have access to affordable healthcare. Its annual “Back-to-School Family Day” assists families with getting health insurance and other health services as they prepare their children to return to school. Free and open to the public, the event provides health information, sports physicals, immunizations, health screenings and fun! When families arrived at the Marion County Public Health Department, their first stop was to pick up backpacks filled with school supplies for every child present. Sorors from IAC were on hand to greet those families. Sorors were there to check them in and hand them the backpacks filled with school supplies. Nearly 50 Delta Dears, Divas and Dolls staffed stations to fill those backpacks, checkin families, manage lines and hand out backpacks. More than 2000 children, ages 3 to 18, participated in the event. Soror Jamyce Curtis Banks, Co-Chair of the National Membership Services Committee, was all smiles as she served with IAC Sorors. CKF has come to depend upon IAC’s service, organized DeltaPower, and smiles to welcome families every year to the Back-to-School Family Day.

“They did the work,” Soror Briggitt Miller said, “They came together and offered great programs!” Miller says the role of an advisor is not only important to help undergraduate sorors serve on campus but also to encourage them to make the transition from collegiate to alumnae chapters. “We must remember that collegiate sorors were our founding members,” said Miller, “We must constantly uplift and encourage them so they will make Delta a lifetime commitment. It is the responsibility of the alumnae chapter to pick up and lift up.” Sorors in the Lexington Alumnae Chapter say they are ready to support, and help, Soror Miller in what they call a rewarding responsibility!

MU EPSILON CHAPTER “Making a Smooth Transition” The transition from high school to college can be an overwhelming experience. The University of Kentucky tries to ease that transition with a week of events to welcome students and get them acclimated to campus. Held the first week of school, “K-Week,” introduces students to services on campus and to the many student organizations. The Mu Epsilon Chapter, of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is no stranger to lending help during this week. During this week, Mu Epsilon Chapter volunteered to help freshmen students move into their dormitory rooms. Sorors also participated in the “Campus Ruckus” event. Mu Epsilon was one of many campus organizations that provided a fun activity or game for new students to help them learn about student groups. Mu Epsilon invited students to play corn hole, pin the tail on the elephant and a get to know the chapter members in a light-hearted setting. Another program, “Myth Busters,” dispelled some of the widely held myths about being a college student at the University of Louisville. The final program, “Sundresses and Service” dealt with the importance of young women taking care of themselves (Mind, Body and Spirit) and giving back to the community through service. Xi plans to continue to be involved in its community, focused on increasing the chapter GPA and work towards achieving the collegiate goals established by the Midwest Regional Representative.

NU CHAPTER Code R.E.D. for Safety The Devastating Divas of Nu Chapter presented a public safety event to nearly 50 students on the University of Michigan’s campus on September 12. The event, called “Code R.E.D.: Defense with the Divas,” included an informational presentation by Detroit Police Inspector Dwane Blackmon. It was followed by a group participation exercise, a self-defense class taught by Detroit Police Officer Allen Williams. Nu Chapter sponsored the event to help students learn to defend themselves and feel more confident and safe on campus. The chapter wants to reduce the number of students who are victims of violence. Students who attended say they walked away feeling safer and agreed to share what they learned with their friends and family. Among the tips discussed: 1. Avoid walking alone. 2. Be alert to your surroundings. 3. Trust your gut. If you’re not comfortable in a situation, leave. 4. If attacked, the goal is to get away, not get revenge at that moment.

OHIO Making a Difference NU PHI CITY WIDE CHAPTER An Intimate Conversation with Wil Haygood: The Author Whose Work Inspired the Movie, ‘The Butler’ The Columbus (OH) Alumnae Chapter’s Arts and Letters Committee partnered with Nu Phi City-Wide Chapter on September 10, 2013, to host, “An Intimate Conversation with author Wil Haygood,” the author of the novel “The Butler: A Witness to History.” Haygood took the audience on an historical journey as he recounted the moment that he first knocked on Eugene Allen’s door, the butler who is the subject of the book, to the moment he collaborated with filmmaker Lee Daniels to bring his book to the big screen. The audience was moved as he recounted his early conversations with Allen, and his wife Helene, and the emotional moment when Allen witnessed President Barack Obama being sworn in during the 2009 Presidential Inauguration. Nearly 60 people were on hand for an evening filled with laughter and tears and an appreciation for Allen’s role in African-American history. After a period of questions from the audience, Haygood autographed copies of his book which were made available for purchase.

COLUMBUS ALUMNAE CHAPTER Columbus Alumnae Chapter: Supporting Future Doctors and Dentists The Columbus (OH) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. held its second annual Dr. Alexa Canady Conference for Future Doctors and Dentists from April 5-10, 2013. This year’s theme was

“My Future…It’s in The Bag.” According to health experts, Black and Latina girls are often on the wrong side of healthcare statistics: obesity, pregnancy, suicide, domestic violence, diabetes and depression. These obstacles not only hinder their academic potential but, left unchecked, can prematurely destroy their opportunity to live life to the fullest. As a pre-emptive strike, sorors connected young girls in the Columbus area with leading female professionals and collegiate leaders in medical and dental fields. During the four day conference, participants took part in several work sessions: Academic Achievement & Career Exploration, Physical & Mental Health (Obesity and depression), Women’s Health and Hygiene Courage and Character development (Anti-bullying and critical thinking). The conference is inspired by Dr. Alexa Canady Harris, an esteemed soror, who became the first African American Pediatric Neurosurgeon at the age of 26. She recently retired from her medical practice in Florida where she focused on Hydrocephalus, Congenital Spine Abnormalities, Skull Abnormalities, brain and spinal tumors. Columbus Alumnae sorors celebrate Dr. Canady’s legacy by hosting this conference to inspire other young women to pursue the highest levels of academic achievement, service, advocacy and leadership. During the Midwest Region’s Sisterhood Luncheon, at the 51st National Convention, the Dr. Alexa Canady Conference received a special innovative program award. Two local Sorors served as Honorary Chairs for the Conference: Dr. Canise Y. Theta Omega Chapter members kicked off the sorority year by serving at the concession stand at the local Midget League football game. The Chapter has high hopes to be involved in more service. Some of the upcoming events for the Fall Semester include Marshall University’s Homecoming and participating in the Poverty Simulation at West Virginia State University. Chapter members are excited to participate in the upcoming Kentucky/ West Virginia/ Indiana Cluster and participate in activities related to the upcoming general election.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

WISCONSIN LAMBDA ALPHA CHAPTER Poised for More Groundbreaking Programs Fresh from a semester of groundbreaking programs, the Lambda Alpha chapter is poised for another successful semester. To kick off the semester, it hosted a womenonly program called S.U.C.C.E.S.S. The event consisted of a panel of women from Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta and Gamma Alpha Omega, answering questions women

Pictured above: Lambda Omega sorors. on campus had about having a sense of direction, understanding, clarity, self-respect and self-awareness. The goal was to encourage the appreciation and respect for the self, as well as surrounding women of all cultures with support. The chapter also hosted a program called S.A.F.E. (Stop Abuse For Everyone,) where participants learned some facts about domestic violence and how to help a friend in an abusive relationship. The event concluded with a self-defense lesson from a few leaders in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s campus Karate Club. Everyone left with a new sense of power to help themselves and others. During the chapter’s Delta Week, Lambda Alpha’s events will focus on collaborating with the Black Student Union on improving study habits, human trafficking awareness and volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club. The chapter is also hosting a basketball tournament to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Sorors are proud to say that they are also supporting community service events hosted by the National PanHellenic Council to help them almost double the average hours of service the chapter performs.

County experienced the highest African-American voter turnout ever with more than 14% of African Americans in Dane County voting in the November 2012 elections compared to 10% in 2008.

MADISON ALUMNAE CHAPTER Wisconsin Chapter of the Year The Madison Alumnae Chapter was named “2013 Alumnae Chapter of the Year” for the state of Wisconsin, and chapter leaders point to a wealth of successful programs in the 2012 – 2013 sorority year as the reason. In the areas of economic development and educational development, the chapter held a financial fortitude program for youth, entitled “MAC DST: Deltas Serving Our Youth One Dollar at a Time.” The program attracted 30 students from Madison area high schools and led to several applying and receiving the more than $12,000 in scholarships awarded by the chapter in 2012 and 2013. The Heart and Soul Scholarship Ball and Gala is the chapter’s signature event and raises money for local high school seniors to go to collage. Over the past two years, the event has raised more than $13,000 in scholarships for students. Finally, in the area of political awareness and involvement, the Madison Alumnae Chapter provided political education to help increase voter knowledge about their wards and representatives. Against the backdrop of Wisconsin’s controversial Voter ID laws, the Madison Alumnae Chapter successfully held more than five voter registration drives at local churches and community centers and registered more than 200 voters. MILWAUKEE ALUMNAE CHAPTER Revved Up and Ready to Go The Milwaukee Alumnae Chapter is revved up and ready to go. On Saturday, September 7, 2013, it kicked off its 2013-2014 year with a day of fun, fellowship, and re-fueling. Sorors got moving with Delta Bingo and displaying their best in strolling, but chapter president, Kimberly Eubanks, told sorors “it’s time to move and work hard by making a difference in our communities.” Soror Eubanks said her goals for 2013-2014 are simple: to get the chapter moving in the direction of more public service, a stronger sisterhood to carry out that public service, and more community awareness that the Milwaukee Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta is still here and committed to serve. She said she wanted to make sure the chapter engaged in National Project 13 initiatives. The chapter got its first chance for collaboration with one of 13 identified organizations in October. For breast cancer awareness month, the chapter joined Sisters Network, Inc. and others to participate in the Sista Strut walk to raise money for breast cancer health programs.
