letter from the editor Hello Midwest Mama Readers! I am Andrea, editor of The Midwest Mama and owner of Borrowed Time Creative. I am also a mom, a wife, a sister, daughter, friend and most importantly, I am a woman. Midwest Mama defines“ MAMA” as: a strong, powerful woman regardless of whether she has children or not. The characteristics of a mother are universal, and they translate into our work, our communities and our families. I don’t have to tell you that being an entrepreneur of a small business is hard. But owning your own business or having a career while also juggling relationships, motherhood, side hustles and home life is demanding, stressful and doesn’t always get the props it truly deserves. I created this curated publication to highlight women in business and small businesses that are owned by women. My goal was to create a stunning magazine that empowers women to tackle any obstacle and achieve their goals; regardless of age, race and situation. But this isn’t just any publication, mind you! We worked HOURS photographing, styling, designing, interviewing and writing stories about our featured ladies. We know that as you read through our first edition, you’ll see and feel how truly incredible these women are, inside and out. I have yet to meet any person who has achieved a perfect balance of work and life. If you know of one, please tell me how they do it! For me, it is a daily thing on my “to do list.” But with the help of my family and my team, I am getting better at it each day. So cliché, but it DOES take a village. And not just with children. It takes a village to be successful, feel strong and achieve happiness in your everyday life. Within these pages you’ll find our businesswomen teaching fitness, owning boutiques to styling events (and each other!) In each edition we’ll highlight one non-profit partner that’s changing the game for our local community. I encourage you to read these stories, learn from them and let them empower you to take risks!

You can also find additional curated content about our Midwest Mamas on our website, social media platforms, and launching later this winter, our official Midwest Mama Podcast. I have loved getting to know each of these women. Knowing that they are going through some of the same things I am, right here in our own city, makes me feel part of something so much bigger. I am proud that Cincinnati is full of women who embody the characteristics of what it is to be a Mother. They work incredibly hard every single day to do what they love. We set out to create a publication, but in return we created a village.

You won’t be able to resist dressing your favorite tiny humans in the most stylish, eco-friendly clothes you’re sure to find at Hutch Baby in Over-the-Rhine. Alexus Hight opened Hutch Baby in 2018 and the shop boasts trendy, upscale clothing for infants to size 16Y. She was inspired by her daughter, Navi, to open a store where she could offer a fabulous shopping experience, connect with her customers, share insights on fabrics and clothing details, and even host interactive events with kids. Hutch Baby was hit hard by the pandemic. Alexus shared with us the obstacles she had to overcome including riots and having to shut down the store. She’s proud (and rightly so!) to have survived these challenges and is excited to bounce back into a new year of business growth. When we asked Alexus about who in her life empowers her, she talked about being thankful for her sister, Mallory. “She challe-nges me to do better in every way possible. She uplifts me and helps me become a better person by being there for me mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. She’s there to cheer me on no matter how big or small my accomplishments are.” We love a good sister/sister bond! Visit Alexus at Hutch Baby Tuesday through Saturday and tell her we said hi!

24 LEADING LADY: RUSTIC GRAINS

faith

through

fire

Embracing a winding way through faith Lead Writer | Andrea Tarter, Editor + Founder Copy Editor | Marissa Abernathy, Content Creator + Podcast Producer & Sarah Polo, Content Creator

Sarah Cox, co-founder of Rustic Grains sat down with me to talk about their calamitous yet unexpectedly fruitful past, how it compares to their present lives, and their thrilling plans for the future. As owners of an online and pop up retail store and custom woodworking company, Sarah, and her husband Daniel, inspire us with their industrious attitude and unwavering faith. As I sat down to begin the interview, Sarah prompted the conversation by saying that everything happens for a reason. And she really believes that. Not only do you see their faith shine through the company branding and logo, but you actually FEEL it in conversation. Let me backtrack for a second… I met Sarah and Daniel of Rustic Grains (RG) years ago on my first trip to a vintage market (a little foreshadowing…hint, hint). If you’ve never been to a market, let me set the stage… imagine…hundreds of creative makers, boutiques and local shops all in one place! Stroll for hours sipping on lattes and roaming from vendor to vendor finding unique home decor, statement fashion pieces and creative handmade goods. If you’ve never been it's a definite add for your 2022 to do list! When I saw Rustic Grains at the market, I remember being blown away by their unique, antique red trailer. It screamed, “come inside and see these rustic treasures!” As an antique shopper, I obviously obliged. From that day on, I continued to look for Rustic Grains at each market I attended. There was something about this company and this family that stuck with me, but I had no idea how steeped in perseverance and faith their story truly is.

2016

a business is born In 2016, the Cox family (Sarah, Daniel and at the time, two little boys) moved to a new home and completely revamped their style. Sarah told me, “I wanted everything new. You know when you just get to that point? Daniel started building furniture and home decor, and we realized he was really good at it!” So good, that at their housewarming party of sorts, a friend actually bought a piece of furniture right out of their living room THAT NIGHT! Fast forward one month, and Rustic Grains’ first listing on Facebook Marketplace featuring Daniel’s handiwork, got 1,500 inquiries! Things only picked up steam from there, as they continued to flourish at their first pop-up store, selling out of every single item. They continued to build their brand at shows and markets, and even began offering not only custom furniture and decor, but also DIY workshops and home stylings.

2017

workin’ hard for the money In just a few months' time, Rustic Grains was a full-blown business and things were moving fast. Sarah recalls everything being a blur. “We just worked and worked nonstop. We would work together in our bedroom for hours and hours after coming home from our full time jobs.” They grew so quickly that towards the end of 2017, Daniel was able to quit his job to focus solely on the company. If you know anything about being a freelancer or owning your own business, you understand just how impressive that is!

2018

growing business, growing family Amidst a growing business and full time job, Sarah (and Daniel!) were longing to expand their family. In 2018 Sarah gave birth to the chunkiest, spunkiest, little girl I have ever met, Nolia. “Nolia was papoosed at every single show,” Sarah explained. “I would literally breastfeed behind the booth after helping Daniel set up, run the shop during market, and then help tear down.” Umm….can you say superwoman? As life continued full speed ahead, the family got to the point where they were just tired. “Working full time and a side business, totaling to 80-100 hours a week, plus two boys, and a brand new babe, we needed to make a change.” The shop needed a supplement; Sarah began to expand the brand, bringing more unique items to offer and sell. (If you check out their site, you will see what we’re talking about! So much cute stuff.) It was in 2018 that the famous red trailer I was talking about earlier, made its first appearance. Sarah and Daniel host a weekly (Tuesday) trailer sale to this day, online and occasionally in person. This unique shopping experience is one of the MANY things that makes RG so special. It not only encouraged an increase of sales and returning customers, but also paved the way for safe shopping during the pandemic.

2019 tragedy strikes

By the end of 2019, RG had participated and traveled to ten different shows to sell their unique goods. “The ride of shows is rocky and unpredictable.” Sarah explained. “We just really needed a break, even more than we realized.” So on a chilly, October morning, Sarah walked into the office of her day job, finally ready to deliver her two weeks notice. As they have with everything, they prayed about this decision and felt it was the right time for her to quit and pursue RG full time. But as Woody Allen says, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.” October 24, 2019, the Cox family lost their home AND shop to a fire. “Everything felt so out of control. We have no home. We couldn’t supply clothes for our children. Daniel did not have a place to work. All of our inventory had been destroyed.” The fire changed their entire perspective. Sarah began to cry. “We needed to make a change and this was God's way of forcing us to make that change. So many good things came from that fire.” I honestly don’t know how she does it. Seeing the good through the bad like that. We were doing the interview virtually, otherwise I would have totally given her a hug at this point.

loaves and fishes Just two weeks later, RG went to the Holiday Market at Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati. “I can’t even explain it, Andrea.” Sarah said. “We lost everything. Not just in our home, but all of our inventory, materials, everything. We couldn’t do our current custom orders or sales, but we had already decided to go [to the market.]” That weekend, thousands of people visited the Cox family after hearing about the fire. As she continued with the story, the hairs on my arms began to stand up.“We were running out of inventory and Daniel would panic! I would just say, ‘go check in the trailer one more time!’ And he would come back with all of these extra items. Like, where was this stuff coming from?!” she laughed. Listening to Sarah, all I could think about was how much this reminded me of the Bible story where Jesus fed the 5,000 with just five fish and five loaves of bread. Sarah and Daniel felt God’s intense provision that day, and it was then and there they knew this was the right path. This was their purpose. “It gave us so much confidence. We can actually do this!” Sarah exclaimed. “We were a family that had just lost everything, but we made the most money we have ever made in a single show.” This amazing, supportive community carried the Rustic Grains family when they truly needed it and helped make a way for the brand and family to thrive.

2020-2021 from the ground up

Sarah was officially able to leave her full time job in 2020, right in the middle of a pandemic (you go girl!). And Daniel started construction on their new house while they moved their family into her parents’ property. They started working out of an enclosed trailer (ya, with no heat or air conditioning) for a full year, thus the famous Tuesday Trailer Sales were born! During the pandemic, Sarah would schedule safe, individual shopping times for customers to come and browse their famous red trailer. “Shows come and go, but the Tuesday Trailer Sales supported our family and still does today.” In 2021, they were able to hire their very first, full time employee, plus additional hands for shows! Take it from a small business owner, that is HUGE. When you own your own small business, you wear all the hats and do all the things. Once you are able to finally hire help, it’s a massive accomplishment and relief. While nurturing the business and growing team, they were also building their home. But to provide their family with their own space in the meantime, Sarah and Daniel renovated an old camper into the cutest, little, tiny house! Can they do everything? Yes. Finally in September of 2021, the Cox family: Daniel, Sarah, Crosley, Alden and Nolia, moved into their beautiful new home; two full years after the fire. I asked Sarah what they say to people when asked about a five year plan. “It truly is whatever God calls us to do. His calling will make us more successful than us making a plan. We are walking through open doors and taking one step at a time!”

2022

faith of a mustard seed Well, behind that next door is something very special and very exciting. I can personally vouch for this, as my team and I are helping with this AMAZING new project. Remember that foreshadowing I mentioned? Well here it is. Drum Roll Please! This spring, Rustic Grains will be launching their VERY OWN curated market, taking place entirely indoors on the Eastside of Greater Cincinnati. I could hear the excitement and giddiness in her voice as Sarah explained the vision for what they are calling The Mustard Seed Market. “The most important aspect of this market is that we want it to be a community and family oriented event.” When I asked her what inspired the family to name the event Mustard Seed Market, Sarah replied: “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, move.” She went on to explain, “This verse (Matthew 17:20) is so important to us, because in our five years of business, we have had many trials and tribulations that God has truly seen us through. He constantly reminds us that it just takes a mustard seed-like faith; and to trust in him in all things, big or small. He teaches us to put our faith entirely in God's power rather than in our abilities. Even the smallest amount of faith, as long as it is genuine faith, can make the impossible happen.” The excitement and passion for this project was evident as Sarah concluded, “These vendors are our family. And we want to make something really special for customers, guests, vendors; whoever wants to be a part of it!” The Mustard Seed Market will host two events in 2022, their Springtime Market and a Holiday Market in the Fall. You will NOT want to miss this shopping event. Be sureto follow RG on social media and check out their new website to be the first to know when tickets and vendor applications are available! “So after all of this; the fire, the business, babies, the market... who is Sarah?” I asked. “Ha! I'm still learning that! Over the last five to six years, RG has made me lose myself a little.” (Totally understandable) She went on to explain that growing a successful business and taking care of family and home takes all of her time and effort. “But at the same time, that is me. I am a strong working mom. I am a hardworking mom. And I am a strong entrepreneur.” And that, ladies and gentleman, is why she is our Leading Lady in The Midwest Mama. Sarah Hairston-Berkley spent 16 years dazzling audiences on-stage with the Cincinnati Ballet before rededicating her career to a life-long passion for teaching. Now, as the Cincinnati Ballet’s Academy Director, she’s creating a safe space for young performers to dance AND dream. Sarah was just shy of her third birthday when she stepped into her first dance studio in Charleston, South Carolina. And of course she did, her big sister was already dancing so naturally she wanted to try it too. Then and there she fell in love, and after nearly 40 years, she’s still pursuing her ballet dreams. As a little girl in the 80’s, Sarah’s parents would take her and her sister to New York to see Broadway shows. Listening to her recount her adventures, I can imagine her bright blue eyes gazing up at the city lights; the energy and thrill of experiencing Broadway musicals like Cats, seeping into the soul of a young and impressionable Sarah. Her voice seemed to sparkle when she recalled her time in New York, “I loved the music and the dancing! I just wanted to be a ballerina, or to just be in Cats, really!” After her father passed away from an illness when she was just seven, Sarah and her family moved to Columbia, South Carolina where she became fully immersed in her passion for performance. It was there that she enrolled at Calvert-Brodie School of Dance where her ballet teacher became like a second mother to her. “She was just the most elegant woman in the world, and I had such an incredible relationship with her. It became my life and I was so in love with dancing, with music, and being on stage.” As a teen, Sarah began teaching younger students and also developed a love for instruction. She recalls sitting for hours drawing out what her ballet school would look like. “I always had dreams of being a professional dancer and then owning my own school, but not really knowing how I was going to make it happen.” After graduating high school from the North Carolina School of the Arts, Sarah moved to Boston full of poise and promise. She studied at the Boston Ballet School for a year before being asked to join their Second Company. But a year later, she found herself considering auditions with other companies and one fateful afternoon, she took an open audition for the Cincinnati Ballet. “Back then (2001) Cincinnati Ballet was not really on the map. Honestly, I didn’t even know where Cincinnati was!” she recalled.

Sarah Hairston-Berkley @cincinnatiballet cballet.org

The audition was taught by then (and current) Cincinnati Ballet Artistic Director, Victoria Morgan. Sarah vividly remembers Victoria holding on to her photos after the audition. Just hers. “But she didn’t say a word to me…so I left and went home”. Not 30 minutes later, her door buzzer rings. As the 19-year old Sarah descended the four flights of stairs from her Boston brownstone, she had no idea that right there on her doorstep, Victoria would offer her the job that would shape the rest of her life and career. Sarah took the leap and moved to Cincinnati, thinking she’d be here a few years before moving on. Instead she wound up creating a life here she loved. She worked her way up through the company to become a soloist, then senior soloist and at the age of 30, she was promoted to principal dancer, the highest rank within a professional dance company. “I never thought I would be promoted to principal and when that happened everything changed for me; and since it was later in life I was able to really appreciate it and grasp the responsibility I had.” Sarah never stopped flexing her teaching muscles throughout her dancing career. In 2016, she had recently married and was building a family of her own when the opportunity presented itself for her to shift her career from dancing to teaching. The Academy Director role seemed to come at just the right time, allowing her lifelong dedication to teaching to take center stage. “I was ready for something else, something new in my life where I wasn’t 100% focused on me.”

As Academy Director, Sarah’s focus is on creating a healthy environment for young dancers to feel supported and empowered to support each other. “I want my students to feel like this is a safe place and that they are known and cared about.” She’s dedicated to fostering an open-door culture in her role and for Sarah, that transitions into being a mom, both at home and at the ballet. “I never thought anything could replace being a dancer in my heart but becoming a mom truly teaches you to be selfless” she shared. “I tell my students the same as my kids, I love you and I expect the best from you and when you mess up, that’s what I’m here for.” Sarah says she can’t help her students become better dancers if they’re not willing to make mistakes. So she shares hers, and helps them face theirs head on, kind of like, well, a Mom. The Cincinnati Ballet recently moved into a gorgeous new space outside Eden Park in Walnut Hills and, despite a two-year pandemic filled with uncertainty, the academy and company are more vibrant than ever. With high hopes of getting students back on-stage and audiences back in seats, the future feels bright for Sarah Hairston-Berkley and the impact she’ll continue to have on dance in our community. It seems this unintentional Midwest Mama’s second act is just getting underway. When you visit Mojave East, for a moment you might just forget you’re in the Midwest. This distinctive and stylish space features its own unique flair inspired by the owner’s Southern California roots. Christina Elsass, along with her co-owner and husband, Ben, opened Mojave East in 2018 after making the decision to turn their love of hosting memorable events (we bet they throw a killer party!) into a full time business venture; and lets just say, this isn’t your local VFW hall! Christina and Ben created Mojave East to be a multi-functional wedding and event venue, as well as a general social gathering space. The gorgeous structure flaunts exposed rafters, polished concrete floors and extra large windows that flood the space with natural light. You’ll even find an airy desert courtyard garden just through the glass walls that seems to transport you to a different time zone. They’ve hosted (in our opinion) some of the most stunning weddings, and some the most entertaining corporate and social events we’ve seen! (Just visit their site and scroll through their swoonworthy gallery). Christina shared that she worked many years for large corporate companies but was inspired to open her own business after often being told she’s a creative and a leader “in a different capacity than the traditional path.” (We love the non-traditional too, Christina!) What makes Christina proud to be a woman? “I automatically have a reason to strive to break barriers and create change; I also have the opportunity to inspire other women to do the same.” We are totally inspired by you and Mojave East. You’re killin’ it, Christina!

let’s get real (estate) Let’s get real, buying and selling property can be stressful. Then throw in the added complexity of an up market, and it’s enough to make any mama sweat! Having the right agent can make a huge difference. When it comes to selling in Cincinnati, home grown real estate expert Kelly Gibbs of Kelly Sells Cincy nd Comey & Shepherd, says she has the experience and compassion to help people navigate what could be one of the most important decisions they make in their life. Growing up surrounded by people in the industry, Kelly has always had a keen eye for real estate, design and construction. Regardless of how cliché it sounds, she tells us she chose to be a realtor to truly “help people, like really help them.” And that’s exactly what Kelly does each day. “As a realtor, I am able to combine all my passions andmake a difference in other people's lives.” Kelly has been running her full-service real estate business for over a decade helping people buy, sell, and invest in real estate. Her reputation and local real-estate experience allow her to offer clients unique perspective and guidance to help them make informed real estate decisions. She’s there every step of the way, addressing every question and, in her own words, “never backs down from a challenge!” “The housing market has been extremely competitive and fast paced the last few years, it appears that will continue in 2022,” Kelly shared. She’s passionate about keeping up with changing market trends, and even looks outside of her industry for inspiration. “I look to see what other industries are doing and how I can apply that to my business. Sometimes inspiration comes from everyday situations: my kids, talking to a friend, reading a book or blog, listening to a podcast.” She also looks to other local women-owned businesses in the city for inspiration. "There are so many other local female-owned businesses right here in Cincinnati that I find empowering” she said. As women we manage different challenges and Kelly embraces her womanhood saying that she’s “proud to be a woman because women are strong, compassionate, intuitive, and fearless... plus we live longer and have a higher threshold for pain!” In chatting with Kelly, it sounds like she’s the kind of professional that starts off as an agent and winds up being a friend. She shared how much she values the

countless lasting relationships she’s created along the way saying “My client's make a difference in my life too and I am so grateful to know them.” That’s why selling is personal for this full-time realtor, wife and mom. Kelly offered some great insight to anyone wanting to start their own business venture. “Don’t wait for everything to be planned out perfectly, just do it! There’s no such thing as perfect when starting a business and until you take action, all that planning for 'perfect' is only holding you back from making an impact. You will make mistakes and that's ok. Sometimes those mistakes lead us towards our greatest success.” When we asked Kelly about the women in her life that empower her, she told us how very fortunate she feels to have amazing girlfriends in her life that encourage and support her; they support each other. “Seeing other women succeed and thrive empowers me to want to do the same, and I want to provide my support to them as well.” (Well said Kelly, this is literally, exactly what we’re all about at Midwest Mama!) If you are ready to start talking real estate, even if you’re just curious about the market and how things are moving and changing, Kelly is such a great asset to this city! 42 THE MAMAS BEHIND THE MAGAZINE

isn't she lovely There has been such a feeling of nostalgia as our team has dreamed, developed and executed the first edition of The Midwest Mama. This is a work of art. And we are proud to have created something that is beautiful; that you can touch and and share.

SHELBIE Social Coordinator

As we explored the idea of Midwest Mama, we were inspired to make something that – in today’s society – seems a luxury. As most media is now on a screen, we were committed to creating a tangible product; something special and less ordinary. We wanted to showcase the women in print with quality photography, gorgeous page layouts, and creative storytelling. This project was a hand on effort with our Borrowed Time Creative team plus over twenty local women in business. Let that sink in.

And just look at this finished product. Midwest Mama is a celebration of hardworking, motivating, unique, won’t take no for an answer, boss, women! We learned a lot through this process! In particular, that all of these local women are already looking to each other for encouragement and support, and all of these women are already offering those things... perhaps without even knowing it. Simply by existing and sharing their talents with the world, they’re contributing to a culture of women inspiring women. Now that is powerful! Borrowed Time Creative is not only the creator of Midwest Mama, but – in case you are not familiar – we’re a team of powerhouse women who specialize in marketing and event solutions. That means event coordination, content creation, branding and consulting services, social media, and digital design. Our experience spans industries from niche businesses to nonprofits, retail, government and the list goes on. We like projects of all sizes and we can take the ball and roll with it, or collaborate with you to get the job done. We are here to empower each other and other women alike, to flourish in their uniqueness. This city is jam packed with ambitious, fabulous women and we are here for it! It has been an honor to meet, learn, photograph, and applaud every woman in our first edition. Thank you for all the love and support you’ve shown us. We cannot wait for our next edition and to continue contributing to a culture where women are praised for being fierce and successful.
