VIEW WITH PLEASURE, VIEW WITH MIDWICH!

Throughout any major sporting event – especially in the UK, the Euros – eyes will likely be glued to screens, wherever those screens are. From retail locations to corporate lobbies, from waiting rooms to pubs and bars, displays will be the centre of attention – especially if England progresses even further than in recent tournaments! The Euros won’t just be an opportunity for displays to shine, though. Projectors too are likely to benefit, not least because of their ability

to deliver significantly larger images where 4K makes a real difference – and, at the bigger sizes, more cost-effectively.

LED screens excel at delivering fast-moving sports action, while videowalls lend themselves to a host of creative ways of showing football. And, in hotels and leisure centres, in-house TV screens will likely be devoted to the wall-to-wall coverage of the Euros that many of us are looking forward to.

TECHNOLOGY BROADCAST

Football is essentially a community sport. Watching it at home is fine – but for many, the experience is better when shared. That will typically mean that, as for almost all major football occasions, clubs, pubs and bars will see the benefit from the Euros. It won’t just be drinking establishments that will profit, however.

It’s generally accepted that the feel-good factor that the Euros generates – which increases alongside a British team’s success – translates into higher footfall at retail, and an upsurge in spending. Organisations will be looking to draw a crowd and intensify their presence when consumers are looking

to spend or, in the case of many businesses, provide facilities for employees to stay abreast of the action. When those customers do invest, it seems likely that they’ll invest in the newest technologies – so, indirectly, the Euros will indeed propel the acquisition of large format displays, LED screens, TVs, videowalls and projectors.

“The Euros will indeed propel the acquisition of large format displays, LED screens, TVs, videowalls and projectors.”

EUROS, £2,75BN FUN FACTS FOOTBALL AND AV 5.32BN 87%

The 2020 Euros live match audience reached 5.32 billion viewers. The final was watched by 328 million fans, on par with the record set in 2016. The match between Italy and England was the most-watched TV event in the UK in 24 years. It set all-time streaming records for any type of programming in both countries.1

180,000 TVS 6%

Argos is expecting to sell more than 180,000 TVs during the Euros. It has forecasted that it will sell 4 screens every minute throughout the tournament.3 As England and Scotland prepare for their opening matches, 6% of shoppers expect to buy a new TV or electronic device to watch and keep up.2

Football fans are predicted to spend £2.75 billion on items including beer, pizzas and new TVs during the 2024 Euros tournament. Plus, the wider hospitality sector could receive a £613.7 million boost.4

According to John Lewis, TV and AV sales have soared 47% ahead of the 2024 Euros compared to the same period last year, with shoppers spending on average 13% more on their home entertainment setup. Many consumers were upgrading to larger screens, with sales of 65” TVs more than doubling at 104%, 70” screens skyrocketing at 123% and sales of soundbars up 21%.6

People who watch live sporting events in pubs and bars spend 36% more on eating and drinking out per month. The research by CGA, NIQ and Sky Business found that 87% of respondents are more likely to stay out longer when a live game or match is on. The chance of revisiting a venue was also found to be more likely (89%) if there was sports coverage to view.5

The 2024 Euros will be produced in 1080p HD high dynamic range (HDR), rather than 4K UHD, for the first time in 9 years.7

The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) has predicted a record mid-year period for independent retailers as the 2024 Euros in Germany kicks off, bringing an estimated £2.75bn ($3.5bn) spending surge. This is predicted to surpass the £2bn boost from the 2022 World Cup.8

£2.75BN VAR TECHNOLOGY

Referees will be tracking the game with VAR technology. The English Premier League held a vote recently on whether to scrap VAR – clubs voted 19 to 1 in favour of keeping it. Connected ball technology will be used at the Euros for the first time. According to Sky Sports, connected ball technology sends precise ball data to VAR officials in real-time.9

PROJECTORS

There can be little doubt: if size is important – and football is unquestionably even more compelling on a large screen – then projection is almost certainly the way forward. Capable of delivering 100”+ diagonal images that are sharp and vivid, no flat panel display comes close in terms of affordability for the size.

An image that fills the consumer’s or visitor’s field of view and makes the watching experience like being at the match – and the larger sized image can convey levels of detail that bring an in-match incident to life. Some projectors even have a ‘football mode’. In commercial premises, high brightness and contrast are the keys to delivering high-impact images from a projector, minimising the impact of ambient light.

LED

Coverage of the Euros will be everywhere– and so too will be increasingly popular LED screens. That’s not just because their modular design means they can scale to fit into almost every application – it’s also because of the startling image quality. That’s a function not only of their reduced pixel pitches but also because of their high brightness, high contrast ratio, impressive colour gamut and very fast refresh rate.

Those combine to make them ideal for watching high-impact, fast-movement sports – especially in high ambient light locations. LED screens have other advantages. Their slim form factor makes them easy to install anywhere, while their bezel-less design lends itself to a range of creative approaches. Add to that a life span of over 100,000 hours and low power consumption, and it’s easy to see why so many businesses are choosing LED.

CONSUMER TV

For households everywhere, consumer TVs will be the focal point for experiencing the excitement of the Euros. Today’s TVs offer an unparalleled viewing experience, with advancements in technology making each match come alive in stunning detail. The emergence of 4K and even 8K Ultra HD TVs means fans can see every play and goal with crystal-clear precision. With screens ranging from compact sizes perfect for cozy spaces to expansive models that turn living rooms into personal theatres, there’s a perfect TV for every home and budget.

Modern TVs are not only sharper and more vibrant but also incredibly slim and lightweight, making them easy to mount or move to different rooms. The plethora of smart features and connectivity options, such as built-in streaming services and voice control, make accessing the tournament easier than ever. Plus, with anti-glare screens and enhanced colour accuracy, these TVs ensure that viewers enjoy the game with minimal distractions. Whether cheering for their favourite team or soaking in the tournament’s atmosphere, consumer TVs elevate the Euros experience to new heights.
