Mark Two Distributors folds after Tesco’s exit
The fallout from Tesco’s closure of its kitchen and bathroom business has claimed Mark Two Distributors, which entered administration on 26 November with the loss of 196 jobs. The collapse of the Bolton-based business came after sister business Mark Two Home, which sold and installed Tesco’s furniture, ceased trading – putting 137 people out of work. Around 90% of Mark Two Home’s business was with Tesco, as was a ‘substantial proportion’ of the distribution company’s. Joint administrators Philip Duffy and Steven Muncaster of Duff & Phelps said on 28 November: “A purchaser could not be found for the remaining logistics business and regrettably, 196 redundancies were made today. The 17 remaining employees
are assisting the joint administrators to identify and sell the assets of the company.” Tesco pulled out of the six-year partnership saying it had worries about Mark Two Home’s “ability to deliver the service our customers expect” and claimed that the company had not handed over payments taken directly from customers. But Dave Cullen, the CEO of Burnley-based Ultra Finishing, which bought Mark Two Distributors in June 2013 and owned 30% of Mark Two Home – the remainder is owned by seven other private shareholders – said Tesco had refused to discuss a way to protect customers after saying it wanted to exit the kitchen and bathroom market over a year ago. Mark Two Home, which also had contracts with Debenhams and Laura Ashley, was not in administration as this issue of ek&bbusiness went to press. A spokesperson said: “Mark Two Home Ltd is working in conjunction with Laura Ashley to return full deposits to customers whose kitchens have not yet been installed and that process is almost complete. Any customers who are currently in the middle of a kitchen refit will have the work fully completed and honoured.”
Harvey Jones expands after year of growth The new Harvey Jones showroom in the Centre:MK shopping centre in Milton Keynes
Bespoke kitchen manufacturer Harvey Jones ended a year of growth in 2014 with the opening of its 31st showroom – in Milton Keynes – and the promotion of three senior staff to the board. In a bid to strengthen expansion plans to double the number of stores over the next four years, Matt Hazelden has been promoted to sales director from national sales manager, financial controller Kim Ross becomes finance director and senior production manager James Hadingham becomes production director. “The appointments come at an exciting time for the company, which has seen growth across all fronts in the current year – with sales and showroom roll-outs up year-on-year,” said CEO John Curwen.
All you need is luxe: Antonio Citterio has collaborated with head of Axor, Philippe Grohe, on a third bathroom collection. Unveiled at The Crypt on the Green in Clerkenwell in November, the Axor Citterio E range of bathroom fixtures was described by Citterio as “the essence of luxury”. Speaking to a packed venue, Philippe Grohe reflected on his 14-year association with the Italian architect and designer and how they had created a 37-strong collection, including the single-lever mixer with upright joystick handle, pictured here in chrome

RIM-EX Eliminates the WC pan rim The innovative VitrA RIM-EX toilet features a special new rim-less design to maximise hygiene. The rimless bowl features a sleek and easy clean surface, eradicating any possible space for bacteria to collect, and making cleaning quick and fuss free. The new RIM-EX WCs feature a pioneering and unique ceramic water distribution tool, instead of an old fashioned rim. It is designed to precisely distribute water, ensuring efficiency and removing the need for a standard rim. This tool is fully removable so that cleaning can be easy and thorough. The bowl’s shape has also been developed to make flushing efficient. In tests designed to examine the effectiveness of the system, the Akdeniz University determined that the RIM-EX WC pans were considerably easier to clean and were 95% more hygienic than standard WCs. This exciting new design has been recognised throughout the industry with the M-Line RIM-EX WC winning a Good Design, Plus X, IF Product Design, and Designer Kitchen and Bathroom award. The RIM-EX rimless WC range now includes designs in some of VitrA’s most popular ranges; Nest, Shift, T4 and M-Line from its Designer Collection; and S50 and Arkitekt from its Bathroom and Commercial Collection. This gives a wide variety of choice in terms of both design and price. With these new additions, many bathrooms can now benefit from the superior hygiene and ease of cleaning experienced with a RIM-EX WC. The RIM-EX M-Line toilet is also available with the VitrA Fresh system. The VitrA Fresh flush tank adds a dose of cleaning liquid to every flush, ensuring the highest levels of hygiene with the minimum effort. The tank is located inconspicuously at the back of the WC, making it easy to add fresh liquid. Only a tiny amount of concentrated cleaning fluid is used for each flush, so top ups can be few and far between.

19 Kitchen special report Smart appliances Let’s think smart Discover how manufacturers are turning fantasy into reality with increasingly hi-tech appliances
Well 2015 has certainly got off to a strong start. Grohe’s worldwide sales are up 8%, AO World sales have risen 25% in six months, and Howden Joinery sales topped a staggering £1bn in 2014. RAK Ceramics and Kesseler have both moved to new premises in search of more space, and Martin Moore and Harvey Jones have expanded further to open new showrooms. All the signs are that this year is going to be a good one for the industry. Speaking of new showrooms, we take time out to visit a couple in this issue. Tom Howley – see page 25 – shows us around his new Bristol showroom – the company’s seventh – and reveals plans to open two more next year, one in Chelsea and one in Harrogate. “We want to open about three a year,” he explains. “We’re looking to grow the business to around £25m to £30m.” He’s not the only one with big plans. A highlight of the month was our visit to the new Crosswater and Bathroom Brands 10,000sq ft showroom – see page 51 – in the recently opened £19m Dartford facility. Complete with 5,800 suspended glass bubbles, the ‘gallery’ showroom offers a stunning venue to showcase products to retailers. “I want Crosswater Group to be recognised as the number-one [bathroom] brand in the UK,” says group chairman David Hance, adding that this year he expects the group “will do circa £53m”. And there’s more to feel upbeat about. “This month brings fantastic news for retailers who have worked hard on their online presence, as the online penetration rate of non-food sales is at an all-time record,” says British Retail Consortium director general Helen Dickinson. So what shape is your website in? Does it need a revamp? With online orders now making up a major part of many companies’ sales, you could be missing a trick if your virtual shop window isn’t up to scratch.

Double delight
Better Bathrooms CEO Colin Stevens, pictured, picked up two awards at the 2014 Collect+ Retail Week Enterprise Awards, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London. The business scooped employer of the year and retailer of the year accolades.
Solid performance
County Durham-based Lamplas, which produces solid surface moulded products for the bathroom and kitchen sector, won the health and safety category at the Composites UK industry awards dinner. Operations director Keith Siddle, pictured right, accepted the award from Giles Hyder, HM principal inspector of health and safety.
Eco skills

Howden Joinery sales top £1bn for the first time Sales at Howden Joinery – which claims to have supplied over 350,000 kitchens last year – topped £1bn for the first time ever in 2014. The sales record was announced three weeks before the end of the company’s financial year and tops 20 years of near-continuous growth since the first of 580 branches opened in 1995 – the only dip occurring at the height of the credit crunch in 2009.
Howdens, which employs over 6,600 people, only sells to the trade and says most of its customers are small local builders. Around a third of the products it sells are made in its own factories in Runcorn and Howden. Chief executive Matthew Ingle said: “Reaching £1bn of sales within 20 years of opening our first depots is testimony to the drive and enthusiasm of all the people who work at Howdens.”
BathEmpire.com on the Fast Track for third year running
BSH to launch new built-in ovens
Online bathroom retailer BathEmpire.com has been ranked as one of the UK's top 100 private companies for the third year running. The business was placed 64th in The Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 list after its annual sales rose by 59% to £18.6m. The business was founded in 2009 by Chris Li, pictured, who started by selling taps and showers on eBay. Over the last two years more than 100 new jobs have been created and in 2013 the company secured private equity investment worth £8.5m, funding a move to a £5m base in Nuneaton. Said Li: ”To feature in The Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 for the third year running is a phenomenal result, given that it is notoriously difficult for companies to maintain such high growth levels as they increase in size.”
Showing the way: Hand-made English kitchen company Martin Moore has opened a new flagship showroom – its seventh outlet – in London's Notting Hill design district. The 1,900sq ft studio features four bespoke collections: New Classic, pictured in blue and lavender; Modernist; New Architectural; and English, all made in the company's Yorkshire workshops. Some worktops are supplied from Martin Moore's own stone business, and it also mixes its own paints. Look out for the February issue of ek&bbusiness for our retailer profile on the company, which marks its 40th year in business this year
New talent
Huddersfield-based Ellis Furniture appoints three apprentices every year, in conjunction with Leeds College of Building, and the latest recruits are cabinet makers Patrick Madigan and Jake Sykes who have successfully completed apprenticeship levels one and two in wood machining and have been awarded shopping vouchers. Director Richard Ellis, pictured left, with Patrick Madigan.
Dressed for success
Employees from bathroom supplier HiB raised £1,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Aspire Power Chair Sports Club by donating £5 each to swap work clothes for fancy dress. The company then matched the sum to bring the grand total to £2,000, which will be split equally between the two charities.
Changing rooms
Interior designer and TV presenter Linda Barker opted for stonemason J Rotherham's Bianco Antique Gemini granite kitchen worktop and its European oak for the breakfast bar and front panelling for her kitchen refit. Barker said wanting a luxurious granite worktop is what led her to the company.

Integrated steamers, pyrolytic self-cleaning on Slide & Hide models and improved controls are among the new features on Bosch, Siemens, and Neff cookers set to be launched in March. Siemens cookers gain larger display panels, pictured, with higher contrast, better resolution and a more intuitive touchscreen, along with CoolStart technology for cooking frozen food without preheating. On Neff models Variosteam replaces the old AquaAssist feature to give full steam or combined steam and conventional heat modes. A new three-point temperature probe makes its debut, called PerfectRoast on Bosch ovens and RoastingSensor Plus on Siemens models.
Online business collapse left £1.4m debts Welwyn-based Splash Bathroom Accessories, which previously traded as Splashdirect, went into administration owing 54 creditors – including HM Revenue & Customs and several bathroom distributors – around £1.4m. Two former directors – Telemachos Charalambides and Antonios Charalambides – bought the assets of the business from the administrator, which is now
trading as Ebaths Online, and said they have fulfilled all outstanding orders from the old business. The directors blamed the business failure on the collapse of TC Bathrooms, which caused a 25% drop in sales, changes to Google's ranking system that deprived Splash of traffic, and the administration of its Cyprus-based bank that left it with no banking facilities.
Nobia buys Rixonway in move on UK contract market Dewsbury-based kitchen manufacturer Rixonway has been bought by Swedish multinational Nobia for £34m. The sale by private equity firm August Equity gives Nobia – one of Europe's largest kitchen businesses with brands including Poggenpohl, Magnet and Hygena – a stronger presence in the UK contract market and boosts its UK manufacturing base.
Rixonway, which specialises in rigid kitchens for the social housing sector, has made kitchens in Yorkshire since 1978. In 2006 chief executive Paul Rose, pictured, led a management buyout and the business currently has annual sales of around £40m. Said Rose: “Being part of a larger group will open up many opportunities for the business and we look forward to working closely with Nobia to realise our future growth plans.” Peter Kane, head of Nobia Western Europe, added: “It is very exciting for Nobia to strengthen its presence in the project market. The addition of Rixonway will complement our approach to the UK market very well.”

RAK Ceramics has moved into new purpose-built premises next door to its old base in Petersfield. The building includes a 21,000sq ft warehouse, larger than the old one with bespoke racking and 25% more pallet space, a tile and bathroom showroom that allows for full-size roomsets, more office space, and training facilities. “Although the overall footprint of the new site is slightly smaller, the usable area is far greater, so it's a sensible move in both economic and environmental terms,” said joint MD Alvin Biggs. » The Kitchen Bathroom Buying Group has relocated to a new head office in Southampton.
What a sport: Children's charity Action Medical Research received £2,600 after Smeg donated a cycling-themed FAB28 fridge for a charity auction in December. The fridge – which went under the hammer at the Champions of CycleSport event for nearly three times its retail price – was created by artist and cyclist Richard Mitchelson, who decorated the fridge with portaits of cycling legends. Smeg will continue to support the charity, which helps sick and disabled children, throughout 2015
Retail ombudsman opens for business
Sigma 3 unveils zero-waste ambition
From this month, consumers can call on an ombudsman to resolve disputes with retailers over poor service or faulty products. The retail ombudsman service is funded by the retail industry but says its team of trained case workers will be completely independent. Consumer rights lawyer Dean Dunham, pictured, who helped to set up the service in consultation with Government, will be acting as legal adviser, overseen by an independent board chaired by businessman Sir Eric Peacock. Said Dunham: “Retail is one of the only sectors that until now has no redress scheme for consumers when things go wrong.”
Sigma 3 is aiming to recycle or re-use all of its waste by the end of the year as it strives to reduce its carbon footprint further. The Masterclass Kitchens manufacturer already has a 96% recycling rate but is to trial a shredding machine that can make chippings for wood briquettes from wood waste generated at its South Wales base as part of its ambition to recycle 100% of its waste products. Recent energy-saving measures include the installation of a system that adjusts the fan speed of its dust extraction systems according to load, as well as motion-sensing low-energy lighting. “It's important that we move with the times by improving and adapting our processes to ensure we have minimum negative impact on the environment,” said Masterclass MD Gerald Jones, pictured.
Tour de force: Bathroom manufacturer Utopia has refurbished its mobile showroom to display new product. The showroom – built into a trailer pulled by one of the business's delivery trucks – has room sets featuring items from the Downton traditional collection, Geo and other ranges, with Silver Cloud and Honeyed Elm porcelain wood-effect tiles on the floor. The showroom will also be used for product demonstrations at retailers' premises as it tours the country this Spring. Pictured in the showroom are Sam Ball, marketing manager, left, and national sales manager Steven Jaques

Mereway Kitchens scooped the Business Innovation category at The Midlands Family Business Awards 2014 and was also shortlisted for Employer of the Year. HR manager Stephanie Burgess, pictured centre, accepted the award from PTP business development adviser Margaret Slyfield, and judge and PWC tax director William Dowsett.
German quality
Domestic appliance manufacturer Miele won the National German Sustainability Award in the large companies category. Executive directors Dr Markus Miele, pictured left, and Dr Reinhard Zinkann, pictured right, accepted the award with the jury praising its excellent energy efficiency and low consumption.
Flagship launch
Celebrities, renowned architects and developers gathered in Tallinn for the opening of the first flagship store for Nolte Kitchens in Estonia. There are six kitchens on display in the 200sq m studio that will also offer Siemens, Miele and Bora appliances.
Gala fundraiser
A fundraising event organised by Schmidt Kitchens Wimbledon commercial relationship manager Charley Jones, pictured, raised over £21,000 for STEM4, a charity that helps teenagers with mental health issues. Guests enjoyed a Champagne reception, three-course dinner and auction with prizes including a fully fitted Schmidt kitchen.
New wheels
Independent retailer Howards Electrical was picked as the winner of a brand-new, fully branded Ford transit van in the Stoves' Dream Wheels competition. Pictured from left to right: GDHA area sales manager Keith Hayes, GDHA chief executive Denver Hewlett, Howards Electrical director Kim Shingler and sales director Dave Shingler, with celebrity chef Brian Turner, who presented the award.
Home improvement sales on the rise Retailer Topps Tiles says it’s well on the way to meeting its target of gaining a third of the tile market following market share gains in its last financial year. The Leicester-based business says over the year to September 2014 it held 30.3% of the market, up from 28.5% in 2013. Its sales rose 9.8% to £195.2m, while pre-tax profits leapt 31.5% to £17.1m. Sales to the trade were up 3% to 46% of total sales. » Kingfisher said a stronger economy and an improving housing market in the UK and Ireland helped push third-quarter 2014 sales up by 4.8%. Though overall sales at B&Q were up by 0.9% to £922m, sales of kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms fell 4% following a decision to reduce promotional activity. Total sales at Screwfix were up 25.2% to £226m. Overall group sales were down 3.6% to £2.8bn and retail profits fell 6.9% to £225m as sales in France and its other international markets faltered.

movers & shakers CEO appointed
Michael Rauterkus began his job as CEO at Grohe AG at the beginning of this month, taking over from David Haines, who remains chairman of the German company and chairman and CEO of the Grohe Group. Rauterkus had been chief sales officer since October 2011 and from April this year will also be regional CEO for the new Lixil Water Technology Group business unit.
Leading the way
Fake Grohe showers seized A shipment of counterfeit Grohe Relaxa showers sent from China to an address in Hamburg was seized by customs authorities in the German port and later destroyed. The showers, which sported Grohe logos but were said to be of inferior quality, were stopped after officials spotted that the consignment wasn't being shipped by Grohe's usual route and checked with the company. “Some counterfeit products may even pose a hazard in use and cause damages to health and property, which is why Grohe continues to go to great lengths to protect
its customers from the risks associated with counterfeit products,” said the company. » The first nine months of 2014 saw worldwide sales at Grohe Group increase by 8% on a constant currency basis, up from €1.075bn in the same period of 2013, to €1.138bn. Half of the manufacturer's sales come from Europe, where sales were up 5%, with increases in Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and America up by 7%, 6%, and 9% respectively. Pre-tax profits were up €6m to €210m. Long service with a smile: Loyal staff who've worked for bathroom supplier Crosswater for a decade or more have been presented with a Rolex watch – engraved with the company's logo – and a commemorative plaque. The presentations to eight long-serving employees were made at the opening of the company's new £19m headquarters in Dartford by the chairman and founder, David Hance, who's seen here, right, with area sales manager for the South Geoff Hogg, who joined in 2002

He'll now cover an area encompassing Penzance, Portsmouth and Oxford.
Furniture moves
Jamie Schneider, right, has been promoted to the role of national sales manager at Bacup-based KBB furniture manufacturer JJO. He's spent 10 years as area sales manager for the South West and South Wales and will now manage a sales team of 11. His replacement is Ken Stout, left, who, prior to a short spell outside the kitchen industry, held a sales role with PWS for eight years.

Kesseler factory move boosts jobs and production British kitchen manufacturer Kesseler has created at least nine more jobs after moving into a new factory fitted with nearly £700,000 of new equipment that doubles its capacity. The 25,000sq ft Kirkby-in-Ashfield base includes a new showroom with a working kitchen, while the factory boasts a new zeroglueline edgebander that produces waterproof edges on carcases. A fully automated board handling line is to be installed later this year. Scott Slater, commercial director of the fiveyear-old family-run company, said: “We have been careful to grow the business within our capacity to ensure service and quality levels. Our new facility allows us to pursue our goals and expand our network of kitchen studio partners.”
Island magic: It's an island – and almost a kitchen in its own right. The Silent Move from North London kitchen design studio Neil Lerner features a 12cm-thick composite stone worktop that slides back to reveal a hob and sink complete with folding tap. When opened, the sliding top can be used as an extra preparation space or breakfast bar. The worktop is available in 10 colours

Let’s think SmarT the connected home is here – but are appliance manufacturers offering consumers the smart appliances they desire? Words mike Casey

here is smart and then there’s appliance smart. Intelligent kitchen appliances are more connected than ever as the anticipated concept of the smart home morphs from fantasy to reality. The interactive environment where appliances are connected to each other or controlled by smartphone for maximum convenience and ease of use is now within easy reach for consumers. While still in the conceptual stages, Whirlpool products showcased at last year’s International Consumer Electronics Show – CES – illustrated the
future possibilities of appliances equipped with connectivity. As we wait for the next reveal of future appliance trends and technology at this year’s CES on 6-9 January, Whirlpool’s trade marketing manager Neil Austin offers an insight into what’s to come. “While these might seem novel and futuristic in such early stages, connected appliances also hold the potential to take our resource saving to the next level through facilitating the possibility of functions that allow the appliance to self-select,” says Austin, adding

that appliances would be able to choose “the best time to run in accordance to resource cost and availability when compared to all other appliances, and their movements, on the grid”. This is not a surprising next step as market research company GfK recently revealed in a survey that 84% of consumers said the most appealing function of a smart home would be energy meters connected to the grid to help control costs. “We are heading towards the fully networked home with electricity saving, and remote monitoring of functions and appliances,” says Electrolux design director Thomas Johansson. “This opens up possibilities for smart products, systems and solutions. Connectivity and technological development will affect all product categories from kitchen to cleaning and laundry appliances.”
DD930BK TWO-IN-ONE INDUCTION AND DOWNDRAFT Caple
Tel: 0117 938 1900. www.caple.co.uk Caple's DD930BK, claimed to be the only two-in-one induction hob and downdraft extractor, features four extraction speeds and a choice of four motors providing extraction rates from 800m3/h to 2100m3/h. The induction hob has four zones with booster, bridge function to combine two zones, and residual heat indicators
However, it’s not just the benefits of saving energy that appeal – the GfK study showed that smart-home appetites also include controlling devices remotely. Apparently 67% of consumers would like a set-up similar to a science fiction film where the oven is heating and ready to cook dinner and the front door unlocks when they arrive home. Craig Davies, MD of Sub-Zero & Wolf, says: “Appliances that are compatible with home automation systems such as Crestron, Control4 and Savant are being specified by architects, designers and consumers alike. Consumers want to link all their systems via home automation, such as heating, lighting, AV and kitchen appliances. This gives users greater control over the management and energy usage of their home wherever they are.” The rapid progression of technology has opened the floodgates to

many exciting possibilities as products throughout the entire kitchen portfolio have assumed greater intelligence and versatility. Some of the most traditional names in the business are now among the pioneers, as owners of the Aga iTotal Control can testify. Users are able to operate the range cooker via smartphone, tablet or laptop, or it can be done by sending a text to the Aga. Is this what the average consumer wants? Caple’s sales director Danny Lay thinks so. “Smart appliances are an attractive buy for the consumer because they are looking for models that will save them time and help them in the kitchen,” he says. “Technology rates just as highly as environmental concerns these days and consumers now consider their purchases more to make sure they are spending wisely.” ■

uxury kitchen company Tom Howley is on a roll. Fresh from opening the seventh showroom, this one in Bristol, founder and creative design director Tom Howley is already thinking about the next ones: Chelsea, due to open in March, and Harrogate, later in 2015. “We want to open about three showrooms a year – that’s the plan,” he says. “We’re looking to grow the business to
around £25m to £30m,” he says of his ambitions for the next three to four years. Order intake in the last financial year to April 2014 was £11m, and this year shows impressive growth. “Our order intake this financial year [which ends in April 2015] will be in the region of £14 to £15m,” he says. investment – the Tom Howley factory in Glossop was extended by almost 50% six months ago. And Howley himself has been working hard on streamlining the production. “We still focus on quality,” he says firmly. “We haven’t changed the build quality, but we have systemised it, so we use the same construction methods, hinges and so on across all the ranges.” True to the Tom Howley hardwood, hand-painted, quality kitchen philosophy, the furniture is traditionally made, so the “systemisation” extends only so far. “We’re not going to turn the business into a Magnet or a B&Q, but we’re going to make high-end kitchens easily understood by all of our designers,” he says. Every new designer attends a Howley-run twoweek training course, covering design, technical and sales strategy, with ongoing training for the first month. Designs are produced on Cabinet Vision software, which now acts as the ‘heartbeat’ of the operation, says Howley. “To this day, I still see every design that goes through the business,” he reveals, something that is facilitated by Apple iChat and an ability to share screens wherever Howley happens to be in the world. Alongside Howley’s commitment

Hartford cabinetry, painted in Thistle, houses a Fisher & Paykel fridge-freezer
Tom Howley reveals how he set about designing the Bristol showroom » The building hadn’t been touched for many years, and it needed a complete overhaul. We started at the front door and everything got changed until we reached the back door. Beams and stanchions had to be removed or incorporated into new walls to make four nicely sized ‘rooms’ » We installed the signature Tom Howley shop front – it’s painted in our Sorrel colour with black writing, double doors and glazing » Generally, I’ll put our bestselling Hartford kitchen in the front window » The showroom needs to reflect trends – so we have included our new range, Divine, modern stainless steel-fronted refrigeration and the latest appliances. Worktops have changed over the last five years – we’re doing next to no granite now, it’s all about man-made materials because of their durability and consistent look. Silestone and Caesarstone are emulating marbles and granites and getting close, so they suit us well and are used here » In all of our new showrooms, we include a working display for live cookery demos to customers. We have signed up Nigel Smith as the Tom Howley chef and the events are always oversubscribed » We employ a professional stylist to prop and style our showrooms – it transforms the space. Plenty of people are making good cabinets, but good photography and styling can make all the difference – and get the point across

to quality in terms of materials and construction comes a clear design vision. “Every design I do is very balanced and needs to be in proportion to suit each individual room,” he says. While there are six set ranges and 16 paint colours, the product, insists Howley, remains bespoke. “We are one of the only kitchen companies that is truly bespoke – that’s the way we set it up from day one – if you want a cabinet that’s 822.5mm wide, that’s the size we’ll make it,” he says. “Every kitchen we make is a one-off – we don’t make 10 kitchens together.” The new systems and factory extension mean that lead times have halved and are now running at about six weeks. But, says Howley, those systems don’t mean there’s no room for creativity – he says we can expect a new range to be launched, probably at the same time as the Harrogate showroom opens. In fact, anything new to the portfolio will be carefully introduced. “We’ll probably road test it a little bit more than we used to, to make sure of the supply chain, that we can deliver it on time, that we test the material – that it’s right,” he says. ■

ccording to Utopia’s marketing manager, Sam Ball, the average British bathroom is no bigger than a king-size bed. But it seems that consumers are still keen to transform this five foot by six foot space into a spa-like haven. Are they asking the impossible? AMA Research’s Bathroom Market Report – UK 2013-2017 Analysis indicates the rise in smaller bathrooms in the UK will continue to provide opportunities for growth in the bathroom sector as manufacturers devise even more streamlined designs in compact sizes, and products with integrated storage solutions. “Regardless of the size of the space, consumers are looking to create a streamlined, minimal design, with the feeling of luxury and quality in their bathroom,” says Bagno Design’s UK sales director

Mark Walker. “This is why [they] are increasingly opting for a stone or marble basin and are seeking out brassware in an unusual finish such as brushed nickel,” he continues. Utopia’s Ball agrees and says that space-saving options have been a key feature of the company’s range adding: “Over 70% of units in our fitted range are offered in reduced-depth options and more than half of all our orders contain at least one space-saving item.” Drummond Shaw, director of Drummonds, recommends giving the bathroom the wow factor with a stunning centrepiece – and for many the ultimate luxury accessory is a freestanding bath. Increasing numbers of manufacturers are not only adapting existing ranges to include smaller models, but are also introducing

In 2011 the business was bought from administration as a going concern by fitted furniture manufacturer Neville Johnson. There are now seven showrooms, including the 1,200sq ft Bristol location that opened in November, with all furniture made at its own 50,000sq ft factory in Glossop. Irish-born Tom Howley, now 47, trained as
a cabinet maker in Dublin, working in fine reproduction furniture as well as shop fitting, before moving into kitchens. After nine years at Magnet as a sales designer, he worked for a bespoke kitchen company in Knutsford as a sales designer, before setting up his own company. There are six kitchen ranges, custom-made in different sizes and materials. Paint colours are from the Tom Howley range, and named after plants. Appliances by Wolf, Sub-Zero, Neff, Miele, Caple and Liebherr. Sinks and taps by Kohler, Franke, Perrin & Rowe and Quooker. Designs are produced on Cabinet Vision. Kitchen prices from £25,000, and average £35,000; most expensive to date, in excess of £200,000. Sales are 90% retail and 10% designers and architects Sales stats “Our order intake this financial year [which ends in April 2015] will be in the region of £14-£15m,” says Howley Staffing levels Over 100, including 60 in the factory

s the open-plan living trend continues to tantalise the UK consumer, so the kitchen is adapting its look to suit this more all-embracing approach to design. Already kitchen cabinets are resembling pieces of furniture rather than functional pieces of kit, with handleless doors and a natural palette spearheading the way to a streamlined vibe that blends in effortlessly with both living and dining zones. But the next step is the ‘hidden’ kitchen – that’s ovens, fridges, microwaves, coffee machines and storage areas, all totally concealed from sight in a line-up of clever ways. “We’re seeing a growing demand for open-plan living spaces, but not everybody wants

ekbbusiness january 2015 the kitchen to be a focal point,” explains Neil Lerner. “This has led to an emerging trend for the ‘secret kitchen’ where every appliance can be totally hidden away – and without any obvious pieces of kitchen ‘furniture’.” Sara Wells, regional sales and business development manager at Doca UK, agrees: “There has been a real need for the kitchen to become part of a larger, integrated space requiring the cabinetry to blend in and blur the boundaries between kitchen, living and dining areas. The cabinetry remains desirable and luxurious, yet has become non-specific to the kitchen with flush-fitting and minimal handles. Appliances are also being concealed with the use of pocket and bi-fold doors.”
Indeed, according to the experts, canny ‘hide-and-slide’ pocket doors are one of the key design solutions for the hidden kitchen. These full-length, cupboard doors open and then slide back into pockets either side of the unit, allowing free access to what’s behind such as the sink and worktop, appliances, and storage. Sliding doors are space-efficient too and perfect for creating a large coplanar cupboard behind which accumulated kitchen clutter can be shut away. Completely flush-fitting when closed, the door pulls forward or ‘pops out’ and slides neatly across the adjacent door, eliminating any outward-opening hinges.

Creating a hidden kitchen? Four experts share their top design tips

» “Pocket doors are a good solution when planning how to get the doors of a hidden unit out of sight when they are open. The doors open out and pivot, pushing back into pockets either side of the unit, so they disappear when not in use. This means they are safely out of the way” Michael Gianquitto, business development director, Pedini London
» “Bi-fold doors are a smart solution, especially for features like an appliance cupboard, which houses both crockery and appliances. When open, the doors fold right away, giving access to the cupboard across its full width” Richard Moore, design director, Martin Moore & Company
» “Consider allocating a purpose for the unit with the pocket-door system, for example, as a ‘breakfast station’ where a coffee machine and juicer can be positioned on the internal work surface while mugs, cereal boxes and cutlery can be stored on shelves or in drawers. Always go for high-quality mechanisms to avoid disappointment and problems. Poor systems tend to suffer from noise and quality issues that unfortunately may not stand the test of time” Jamee Kong, head of design, DesignSpaceLondon
» “Fitted furniture from length to breadth will allow concealment along bare walls using cleverly designed pocket, bi-fold and coplanar sliding doors. By dividing the space into clearly defined zones with the right concealment options, we can create one complete area that caters for multiple needs: comfortable living and relaxation, practical work and cooking area, and a place to entertain and dine” Sara Wells, regional sales and business development manager, Doca UK

“Clients want different degrees of concealment,” declares Andrew Hamilton Barr, managing director of Espresso Design. “Some are looking for completely hidden kitchens so we create areas for toasters, mixers and sinks, and a dedicated zone for a desk. Others find that opening a door and then opening a fridge is more of an irritation, so they might just go for integrated appliances. While it’s great to have a sleek look, it’s important to remember that it isn’t always practical to hide away everything – gas hobs particularly need to be on show, if only for fire regulations.” Next up, kitchen gurus predict increasingly clever and more refined

ekbbusiness january 2015 storage including remote-controlled doors and unusual materials such as ceramic stone, rough-cut or 3D veneers and glass, mirror and metal finishes for maximum impact and all-round liveability. “Below ground-level design may be the next step in hidden kitchen fashion,” declares Tony Nicholas, managing director of Nicholas Anthony. “Rather than the kitchen being placed in the centre of the home, architects and designers may start to question how they can completely hide the entire room. Steps down into the kitchen area provide an illusory sense of separation from the home, despite being able to maintain an open-plan physique.” ■

» The most popular request from clients for the ‘hidden kitchens’ is for the appliances to be concealed
» Other regular requests include hidden AV equipment for a concealed TV or audio resources
» This is often followed by the desire for the preparation area, including sinks and general food-prep space, to be as discreet as possible – particularly if the dining area is linked to the kitchen
» Most clients have, or want, a space that provides a seamless flow from living to cooking, to dining, and with this blurring of lines it’s almost a given that people don’t want their appliances or food prep on show
» We’ve been asked for space for a small hidden office, which can simply be a tambour unit with a pull-out shelf for a computer
» To include space to hide small countertop appliances to keep work surfaces clear and uncluttered

He explains: “With its generous depth, you can get fully submerged but at only 120mm long, it can grace a small space that may otherwise be redundant.” Natural materials and quality fixtures are often a key feature of many high-end bathrooms and one of the main benefits of a smaller space is that fewer products are required to achieve a luxury look. Art director at Devon & Devon Paola Ciarmatori recommends selecting one or two statement pieces. She says: “Even if there’s no room for a bath you can still have a beautiful console-style vanity unit, an elegant customised shower screen, and a decorative mirror as a finishing touch.” It also appears that consumers are becoming more discerning in

their choices as Duravit’s chief of international sales Albrecht von der Groeben indicates. “There is a growing demand for design-led contemporary collections which are desirable, sustainable and available in a range of sizes.” In response to this, the company has introduced OpenSpace, described as an entirely new concept to the market in the shape of a shower enclosure that folds away and features luxurious touches such as a clean-cut frame, polished chrome finish, and the option of mirrored or clear glass. Looking to the future Bette’s Rensinghoff believes that compact solutions for the bathroom will become even more important as
pressure on space continues to build. He says: “Products that help to make a bathroom look larger will continue to increase in popularity in the small bathroom sector as expectations rise and knowledge of the product options increases.” Bathroom retailers play a key role in shaping the luxury look, continues Rensinghoff. “Retailers can work with manufacturers who offer a wide range of sizes, along with product-size adjustment and bespoke product sizing, so that they can offer customers the very best option and deliver a finished bathroom that makes the most of limited available space,” he adds. ■

Trend watch: AMA Research’s Bathroom Market Report – UK 2013-2017 Analysis The continued rise of smaller bathrooms in the UK will provide growth opportunities for manufacturers with some key trends shaping design. Here’s what to look out for: » Shower baths, especially streamlined models with tapered edges » Baths that feature storage solutions » A continued interest in wall-hung wash basins, with a significant decline in the installation of pedestals
» Space-efficient WCs with wall-hung designs and corner cisterns along with a wider range of shapes. » Short-projection, wall-hung, corner and triangular basins. » Wall-hung cabinets offering space-conscious storage. » Tall cabinets or tower units that take up minimal space. Top tips: Ripples designer Jade O’Bryan on creating a luxe look in a small space » Choose brassware in an interesting colour or design » Large-format tiles, especially in white, will make the room feel more spacious » Recessed mirrored cabinets can double up as a full-length mirror and are a good way of disguising clutter » Wall-mounted sanitaryware and furniture make the floor area appear bigger
» Sanitaryware must be in proportion with the room – consider using space-saving or short-projection models » In some rooms curves are a better option than square shapes as they are softer and less obtrusive » Try and integrate recesses in stud walls or offer storage over boxing for wall-hung WCs

ith products from three brands warehoused under six separate roofs at three different locations, Crosswater group chairman David Hance doesn’t beat about the bush when he says: “We were bursting at the seams and our service was starting to suffer.” With turnover rising towards £53m, representing a steady 20% year-onyear increase since 2012, sales have been growing at an exponential rate. And it is this growth, plus a break clause in the lease on the previous premises, that encouraged the company to buy a greenfield site and make the move to a brand-new, purpose-built HQ , warehouse, and showroom in Dartford, in the shadow of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. Opened formally at the end of November, the new 129,000sq ft premises include a larger warehouse for the group’s portfolio of products under the Crosswater, Simpsons, and Bauhaus brands.

idely regarded as the most important hotel design, development and architecture show in London, Sleep 2014 took place at Islington’s Business Design Centre, 26-27 November. It attracted a record number of visitors – some 4,000 – from across Europe, the Russian Federation, the USA, South East Asia and the Middle East, as well as from the UK. Among the 150 exhibitors, there was a good showing from luxury bathroom brands, eager to display their latest products to an audience of hoteliers, designers, architects and specifiers. Some, like Toto and Jacuzzi Spa & Bath, were first-time exhibitors at the event, others long-time attendees – Grohe was the headline sponsor for the ninth consecutive year, showcasing new products, as well as providing hospitality in its VIP lounge. It’s not an enormous show, but the fact that it is so targeted is clearly useful for a sector that is notoriously difficult to reach en masse. “This mix of visitors is very good – we’ve been talking to designers of luxury hotels all the way through to student accommodation,” says Jeevan Seth, sales director of Just Taps Plus. In addition to the exhibitor stands, Sleep Set drew the crowds. This competition for the most inspired hotel guestroom included concepts by Nigel Coates Studio, NoChintz, Dreimeta and SKM Design, each featuring wow-factor bathing and showering areas, reflecting their increasing importance to attracting hotel guests. Says Darren Paxford, national sales manager for Vitra, which supplied products to the NoChintz room set: “Every year the competition is full of inspiration showing how the bathroom can be elevated from a room of necessity to a luxurious and exciting space.” ■

It also features a remote control and Bluetooth sound system

ekbbusiness january 2015 “We used to have 6,000 bays, now we have 15,000,” says Hance – and a joint HQ with sister company Bathroom Brands. “The move allows us to continue to grow and to get back to the levels of service that our customers had got used to,” he says. That’s “order by 5.30pm and receive it tomorrow” across 80% of the UK. The impressive building is also home to a super-smart, super-sized 10,000sq ft showroom, displaying products from across the Crosswater Group and Bathroom Brands portfolio. Marten Baker, commercial manager for Bauhaus, explains: “It’s about having a facility that people will remember.” Indeed. Who could forget the sparkle of the 5,800 hand-blown glass ‘bubbles’ that took a team seven weeks to
hang from the ceiling on individually labelled lengths of wire? “We are very much behind the independent retailer and the investment in this place really is to improve what we do for people,” continues Baker. As well as being able to showcase new products and offer a taster of its 2,000-plus SKU portfolio to retailers, the company also hopes to encourage dealers to bring their customers, including architects and designers, and to use the facility for staff training. “One of my visions is to take the business into different markets, such as America, and this provides a fabulous place to bring international visitors as well,” says Hance, who returned from a Florida trade show in October in the knowledge that the Crosswater products had met with a “phenomenal response”.

Crosswater on reaching consumers On TV advertising by companies such as Victoria Plumb “They are doing some of our marketing work for us,” says Baker. “I’ll be brutally honest – they are putting the word ‘bathroom’ in front of millions people on a Saturday night, and we thank them for it” On internet sales “I think people are fed up with the low-cost options bought off the internet where the price has been appealing but the quality hasn’t been considered,” says Hance. “Bathrooms are very much a touchy-feely business and, in conjunction with our shop-in-shops, we’re providing that experience to the consumer”
52
On the company’s ‘shop-in-shops’ “We are currently investing in Centres of Excellence across the UK and Ireland, which encourages our key customers to exhibit more of our brands in a dedicated area, a ‘shop-within-a-shop’,” says Hance. “We’ve got 80 at the moment, and we want to have one within 10 miles of every major conurbation in the UK” On customers “We listen to our customers, we really do,” says Hance. “We’re close to our retailers – I was once told by a senior industry figure that the difference with Crosswater is that we listen to our customers, and because of that, they listen to us”

While over 250 new product lines have been launched in the last three years we can expect to see plenty more. In Spring 2015 comes a new Crosswater range of concealed thermostatic showers, three new Bauhaus ranges of furniture and two new Simpsons ranges of enclosures. “Innovation and design – being different to everyone else – are very important,” says Hance. We can also expect, says Baker, more digital marketing to support its independent retailers, and an ongoing consumer marketing campaign. Hance says he is gunning for the same 20% growth rate in the years ahead, with a clear brand ambition. “I want Crosswater Group to be recognised as the number-one [bathroom] brand in the UK,” he says. ■

Tel: 0845 873 8840. www.crosswater.co.uk What we do Bathroom manufacturer Business history It was 1998 when David Hance, now 49, spotted a niche in the market for Italian-designed brassware and set up Crosswater – a name that suited because Hance was importing taps from Europe, i.e. across the water. After buying Simpsons, the Surrey-based manufacturer of shower enclosures, in 2006, Hance brought Bauhaus into the fold in 2008. Today, Crosswater continues to specialise in luxury European-designed brassware, 70% of which is made in Europe; Bauhaus specialises in Europeandesigned bathroom furniture, sanitaryware and accessories,
90% made in Europe; Simpsons offers one of the UK’s broadest range of competitively priced shower doors, all made in the Far East. The Group also includes Adora, a low-cost range of brassware and showering products for the merchant market. Today, the single majority shareholder of Crosswater Group is David Hance, with Bathroom Brands as the only other significant shareholder. Bathroom Brands includes Arcade, Burlington, Britton, and Clearwater brands in its portfolio. Crosswater Group’s route to market is via the independent bathroom retailer. It currently has 1,500 retailers across the UK and Ireland. Marten Baker is commercial manager for Bauhaus with group marketing responsibilities. Michael Coughlin is the newly appointed group managing director Sales stats “This year Crosswater [Group] will do circa £53m,” says Hance of his 2014 figures Staffing levels 170

ince TK Components – TKC – started business in 1989, it has sold six million doors. No wonder founder, owner and MD Tom Kelly considers the company’s 25th anniversary one that deserves celebrating. “Throughout our history, we have always managed to go forward, through good times and some really torrid times – but we have still kept on growing,” he says. From a standing start – one man selling kitchen components from his garage – Kelly’s business today has an annual turnover of about
£16m, employs 100 staff and, in the last six months, has enjoyed some of its best figures – ever. Sales in the last six months are “on fire”, he says, and up by 18% to 20% on the previous year. In fact, the business is growing so fast that Kelly has just leased 15,000sq ft of warehouse space around the corner, and plans to start work in February 2015 on extending his existing premises by 8,000sq ft – over two floors – to create more office space, a new purpose-built trade counter and a bigger showroom. So what’s behind this speedy growth?

ekbbusiness january 2015 “We sell kitchen doors that are manufactured in Italy by longestablished suppliers who produce a first-class product, we bring the right products – colour and fashionwise – in at the right time, sell them at a decent price and offer an absolutely fantastic service – that’s what we’re all about,” says Kelly. Most customers, he says, want delivery in two to three working days, “and we cope very easily with that” – over £3m worth of stock in the warehouse certainly helps. A quicker service is offered if required, and 70% of orders are delivered by the company’s fleet of wagons including three 18-tonne trucks costing £70,000 each. “We’ve been battered by competitors on price many times, but we’ve never taken any downturn because their service lets them down,” he continues. “If somebody saves £25 by buying a set of kitchen doors from someone else and the supplier doesn’t deliver on time and they have to go back to the kitchen twice, he’s probably lost £200.”
Kelly describes TKC as a “very social company” with a family approach – his three daughters work for the firm, and the eldest, Hayley Turner, is a director. The company encourages a healthy lifestyle by offering free fruit and subsidised fitness sessions during the working day. This is not quite as worthy as it might sound – Kelly, who is master of the humorous aside, says: “Then we go and ruin it by having a booze-up.” To celebrate the anniversary, the company hosted a four-day, openhouse event in October, including a “mega knees-up” for staff, which started mid-afternoon, was due to finish at 9pm, but went on until the small hours. “It was a brilliant night,” says Kelly. Meanwhile, the future, he says, is all about “staying focused”. And there’s something else on his mind. “We are bursting at the seams, and if we keep on growing at the current rate, I think we’ll have to move lock, stock, and barrel again in the next three years.” ■

“I’d never say that the recession was a good experience. but good things did come out of it – now we’re as lean as we can be. I don’t mean pare things down so much that they fail, but ask ‘where is the waste?’ We looked at every cost and cut down – I’d have put timers in the toilets if I could,” he quips. “When you are trundling along making lots of money, you don’t think about these things – but when the muck hits the fan, it sharpens you up”

Career nightmare? “We moved into these premises at the beginning of the recession. I’d just spent £5.4m on this building, and hadn’t sold the old one. Suddenly trade dropped off as the recession hit and orders were down 50%. For a couple of months, it felt like the world had ended,” he says Career highlight? “The staff bought me a monstrously big magnum of Champagne for Christmas last year. That’s nice,” he adds Strange but true “The best excuse I’ve ever had from someone for not paying his account was ‘my pet goat just ate the cheque book’,” he laughs

The company remains owned by Tom Kelly, now 61. TKC directors include his eldest daughter Hayley Turner, commercial director Chris Hazelhurst, and financial director Paul Arrowsmith. Today, TKC operates from a 70,000sq ft purpose-built distribution warehouse and HQ in Manchester, first opened in 2007. The 2,000sq ft showroom is trade only. The company also operates a trade counter from its HQ, selling kitchens to fitters.
Customers are primarily small kitchen studios, extending up to larger brands, and there are over 1,600 live accounts. Average order value is just under £400. While doors make up 75% of the sales, the other 25% is generated by its drawers, handles, carcases, hinges and lighting portfolio of products. There are 51 ranges of doors. This year’s new products include the Moda range of four matt handleless doors and Vivo painted gloss slab doors, designed to be the most affordable painted gloss slab doors on the market. web doctor
www.subzero-wolf.co.uk In a series of virtual health checks, our web doctor monitors the pulse of one company’s online offering. This month, it’s Sub-Zero & Wolf – so what’s the diagnosis?
J
anuary is traditionally the time when optimists look forward to the coming months, and pessimists look back on the last 12 with mixed emotions. Judging by the Doc’s output, rants about text size and intrusive marketing techniques that require you to unsubscribe from an email mailing list you didn’t subscribe to seem to top the list of battles fought, but not won. There is a theme, however, to all of the bugbears that have plagued me – and that is, anything that makes visitors work too hard should be banished forever. We humans are ‘cognitive misers’. We naturally seek mental shortcuts, so any friction a design creates slows progress and makes a nonsense of all the genuine hard work that brands put into their online offerings. We’re not ungrateful, we’re just busy, busy, busy.
servis.co.uk Servis The Doc’s expectations weren’t high and yet this colour-filled, responsive layout has a good stab at an engaging on-topic site Top marks Consistency from one section to another is vital on any site and here is a perfect example. A filter system of tick boxes on the left-hand side is mirrored on the other by banners advertising the guarantee, product reviews from trustedreviews.com, a registration area link and a tab for live support chat Works well You can see customer reviews from external sites such as argos.com from within product pages, which could go some way to keeping visitors on servis.co.uk as they will not have to search around the internet to get a feel for a product’s popularity Could do better It’s hard to nail down who the blog is aimed at Suggestion box The ‘Servis social hub’ is an amalgam of social network activity, so how about giving this content a box on the home screen too with competitions and interesting facts about which gender loses the most socks in the wash to keep things current? Attraction factor Cares about what the consumer cares about HHHH
So Sub-Zero & Wolf’s home screen tagline ‘It’s a lot to take in’ was bound to set off alarm bells. Set just above a line-up of beautifully rendered product cut-outs, this nods to the fact that appliances can get as smart as they like, but drilling down to the models that will suit us best doesn’t get any easier. The large-scale dropdown for Sub-Zero embraces the ‘simple, stupid’ approach. There’s built-in, integrated refrigeration, wine storage, professional models and cookshop. Why make the decision process harder than that? Want to get in touch? Do as Sub-Zero & Wolf does and include contacts for the key people and locations. No-one really likes those contact forms. And have you ever had an answer from one? What if you’d like to buy something – how do you find out where to go? There’s a

The brand communicates its message with minimal jargon and a friendly outlook Top marks Videos under the banner ‘#EasyTips’ caught the eye. Short, fun, and beautifully executed, they sit alongside a theme carried seamlessly onto Facebook and Twitter Works well When things go awry, Zanussi’s ‘Web self service’ helps customers self-diagnose what might be going wrong, with Q&As leading them swiftly through the process Could do better A broken link on the microwave landing pages means you can’t find the freestanding range Suggestion box The ‘Refine by’ function could go a step further. In hobs it filters by electric or gas but not features such as heat indicators or ceramic versus solid-plate Attraction factor Breezily stylish HHH
A website with an instantly recognisable colourway Top marks A red ‘Where to buy’ button shows retailers by region and includes a telephone number, web address and email for each seller Works well The ‘Choosing the right hood’ screen will come in useful, so how about linking that content to the product landing page more? Could do better A ‘Search by code’ box on the manuals screen would stop customers getting lost amid all those identical PDFs Suggestion box Swap snoozeinducing YouTube product videos for a support library for troubleshooting common problems. They would increase the sense of a brand caring about after-sales service Attraction factor Doesn’t waste time with distracting bells and whistles HHH
As expected from LG, technical features are a high-value element throughout the sections Top marks Product landing pages have an extensive filter panel, which is just as well, as in washing machines alone there are 42 screens of results Works well By rolling the mouse over a product, the ‘At a glance’ function reveals a small pop-out box with the key features listed in bullet points Could do better The prominence given to energy ratings changes between appliance categories. In fridge-freezers it’s in the short product description, but in washing machines it’s in the more detailed info. Is that lack of consistency helpful or just inadvertent? Suggestion box Red text on computer screens is not terribly easy to read Attraction factor Comprehensive HHH

Smart appliances promise to make customers’ lives easier, but are these websites ready to do the same?

page with a map and handy icons to tell you the type of retailer that is nearest to you. If you’re not sure what Living Kitchen, Premier Dealer, and Dealer stand for, roll over with your mouse and all will be explained. Having trouble finding the serial number on your new freezer because the packaging went to the recycling centre with the wrapping paper? Below the warranty registration is a collection of images with arrows pointing to where you can find it on your model. Of course, if a manufacturer’s range is nudging three figures, the minimalist layout in evidence would be asking too much of us miserly customers. This month’s entries have some really great examples of how to help visitors with low-effort filters. LG’s takes this about as far as it can go. Yet for Sub-Zero & Wolf, it’s not necessary,
so why add to screen clutter for the sake of it? This is a brand that understands its core consumer. Hand-made is important, as is warranty length. So these are an everpresent message on the model screens. ‘Smart’ features create a sense of buzz for those upgrading or for newcomers, which explains those little blue ‘New’ buttons. They are there to put on the pressure in the same way Apple shows us people queuing through the night to get the latest handheld gadgets. Sneaky but not obtrusive. Surprisingly, all browsing is done without the benefit of a back button, just a breadcrumb list showing where you are and where you’ve been. Is this the year we lose that outdated bit of navigation? With confident design like this, even if we don’t get smarter at the same rate as our appliances, we are in good hands. ■

Clearly AEG customers are a patient lot as there’s quite a bit of text to take in as you browse Top marks Once inside an appliance category, a system of arrows lets visitors browse between individual products, as well as add them to a comparison list that has a button to highlight the core differences Works well In the laundry section a panel helps consumers ‘Find your perfect match’, then shows via icons why it’s the right one Could do better AEG seems to like a bit of self-created wordage, be it ‘MaxiKlasse’ or ‘Sensorlogic ProClean’ Suggestion box The imagery is attractively put together and there are plus-sign buttons to provide a larger view. Can we have a close-up of the controls, with explanations of the functions rather than a list? Attraction factor Works hard HHH
Content improves immeasurably after a home screen that looks half-hearted Top marks Genius! Not only does the site encourage owners to rate and review their past purchases, it enters them into a sweepstake to win a HaierPad tablet Works well Any area that is taskorientated should be super easy and quick to get through and Haier’s registration microsite certainly is Could do better Do people really buy fridges and freezers without looking inside? So how come some products don’t have internal images in the gallery? Suggestion box A logo link for Facebook will do – it doesn’t need a tab on the nav bar Attraction factor The ‘Browsing history’ panel is a feature worth checking out HHH
A blast of white with crisp text in red, grey, and blue make the home screen a refreshing, friendly space Top marks The product landing pages and the individual entries are very attractively laid out, using a combination of bullets and icons. Sad that there is limited imagery Works well The ‘Compare’ function lets you decide between three products Could do better A carousel on the home screen includes a promo for the iHood but click on it and you end up at the ‘Hoods’ landing page. Even using the search function doesn’t bring up the relevant information Suggestion box A ‘Where to buy’ section needs to function to be useful. I used several postcodes of major towns and still got zero results Attraction factor Great looking, let down by dubious technicality HH
Is the lady on the logo raising her arms in exasperation because the text is too small to read? Top marks The product landing screens give key features that summarise individual selling points and dimensions, which is helpful Works well There’s a separate service site that lets consumers get in touch Could do better Another store locator that doesn’t produce any results for my postcode. For areas without retailers within 25 miles, consumers should be directed to a helpline to speak to a human who can find the best way to source a product Suggestion box A filter that organises products by dimension or energy rating would be welcome Attraction factor Lots of great functional content but the overall look is pretty dated and doesn't inspire H
The ‘Fault checklist’ is worth a visit – is it plugged in? Top marks There’s a sharing button on every screen, but only Facebook, Google+ and Twitter get a look in. This could certainly be expanded Works well Detailed product specs Could do better The home screen uses the sliding carousel to trail V-Zug’s TV ads, which no-one will voluntarily watch. Time to accept that consumers don’t watch commercials unless they have dancing pandas in Suggestion box Rather than thinking visitors are going to use your big recipe database, why not embrace Pinterest or Instagram to publicise your oven’s attractive output with one of your resident chefs? Attraction factor It’s all just a bit cheesy. The appliances seem secondary H
First past the post...
For appliance websites, product screens are the true benchmark of how successful your design and content are. Servis’s offering has a huge amount of information without seeming daunting. A right-hand dropdown box shows the key features, and flows downwards into deeper content such as programmes and dimensions. A central ‘Overview’ panel gives the hard sell to quick programmes, as well as time and cost-saving selling points. Tell consumers what they want to know and they will stick around

The reception and bar at the Trick Shot shopping centre, designed by Sebastian Mindroiu, are made of HI-MACS® Alpine White that has been thermoformed, creating a curvy, fluid area. Moreover, since the solid surface material allows invisible joints, the furnishings appear as one homogenous piece, even though the length of the reception is around 17 m, and the bar measures 11 m. A spectacular translucent effect is achieved, to signal each zone destination, by engraving the solid surface and illuminating it with warm light.
