AMBARA CHENGSHUI IRSAM W I D AYAT
WIDAYAT Kutoarjo,1919 - Jakarta, 2002 Born in Kutoarjo, Central Java, 1919. He studied at the Indonesian Fine Ar t Academy (ASRI), Yogyakar ta and Ceramics and Landscape, Nagoya, Japan (1960). After some militar y training, he took the apprentice study at the Indonesia Ar t Academy Yogyakar ta under painters Hendra Gunawan, Sudarso, Trubus, and Kusnadi. Then Widayat met a Bandung Painter, Kar tono Yudhokusumo from whom he got direct influence of decorative style in painting. Widayat also have been influenced by the work of Western ar tists such as Henri Rousseau and Jean Dubuffet (both ar tists appeal to Indonesian preferences for imagination and fantasy), and they have developed an energized, car toonlike figurative drawing style superficially resembling Ar t Brut as well as Chicago Imagism. He received BKPM award (1953), a cultural award from the Indonesian Government (1972), the Best Biennial Painting, Yogyakar ta (1986) and the ASEAN Award, Brunei Darussalam (1993). His works have been shown throughout Indonesia and abroad. He performed his solo exhibitions in Yogyakar ta (1983), Jakar ta (1985, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2000 and par ticipated in joint exhibition in Japan, Netherlands and United States for KIAS (1990 – 1991).
Widayat’s works show an immense variety of stories about nature, family life, myth, and ritual . They are rich in content, texture, and technique. Widayat’s preference for the simplification and distor tion of natural forms had a profound influence on many Indonesian ar tists. His magic decorative style is a personal visual language mostly derived from folk motifs. He focuses on inner structure rather that outward appearance. The re-petition of basic elements are order with an underlying rhythm to create movement. The ar tist’s works encompass all of his varied experiences as soldier, student, teacher, and religious family man. Flora and fauna, religion and mythology, masks and por traits, and daily life all are par ts of his fantasy world. Most of his paintings can give magnificent excitement by his ability in creating stylistic forms of trees, birds, fishes, or his favorite animal. The form also gives decorative motif with the use of hard and dark color producing textures and subtle impression.

ONG CHENG SHUI Bogor,1981 Ong Cheng Shui was born in Bogor, West Java in 1981. He is autodidact painter who found his great interest in painting since he was young. He has been actively involved in arts since 2000. As a professional painter, he has participated in several group exhibitions since 2000 until now. The harsh of life he had been gone through, did not discourage his passion for painting. Using only very light watercolor he done his paintings intensely until finally he found his own characteristic and style of his paintings. He was very impressed with the life and works of Lee Man Fong. Strongly inspired by him, by chance there are parts of Cheng Shui’s paintings that are almost similar to Lee Man Fong’s. The difference between him was that he was capable of expanding other themes with his own technique. Pictures of common people daily life he personally observed within his surrounding have been his great interest in setting the theme of his artworks. The life of children playing, the street vendors like satay seller, traditional clothes seller, fish seller as well as the animal life (doves, rabbits, gold fish, horses, etc.) have described his strong characteristic and expression. Cheng Shui’s paintings have been in the heart of many art collectors in Indonesia and abroad. His work and life has been featured in Arti local art magazine in Jakarta edition 022-December 2009 and edition 033-November 2010. IRSAM Ketandan,Central Java, 24 June 1942 Irsam was born in a Ketandan, a village in Klaten, Central Java on 24 June, 1942. His father was a farm laborer. As a child he helped his parents to shepherd their kerbau (buffalo). Since childhood, he already fixed his mind not to be (a farmer) like his father. He wanted to be a painter. Interestingly, it was his religious teacher who was the first to draw out his talent for painting. Kyai Ali himself happened to be good in decorative painting, namely in painting wayang. Later on, in Junior High School Irsam received a formal training from his drawing teacher, Hadi Sucipto. In 1959, at the age of 17 he moved to Yogyakarta with his teacher in order to continue his study in ASRI (Indonesian Visual Art Academy). At that time the academy still accepted Junior High School graduates. Irsam studied there for 5-6 years. Irsam was one of the four out of 100 students of the 1959 class who graduated a bachelor degree from ASRI. The other three were Suwadji, V.J. Herman and Martindo. He was appointed lecturer in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, STRI “ ASRI” Yogyakarta in 1965. As a lecturer he never stopped encouraging his students. He was also actively involved in many different activities. This can be seen in photos of his in many activities as a lecturer. Unfortunately, he did not stay long in his alma mater. In 1967 he quitted teaching and moved to Jakarta. His first solo exhibition was held in Goethe Institute from 5 to 16 October 1970. Slowly but steadily he managed to hold solo exhibitions in different places in several cities in Java and Bali. During his life, he had in total 19 solo exhibitions. In Jakarta he also became the Head of the Division for Painting and Graphic Art in The Directorate of Art, General Directorate of Culture, under the Department of Education and Culture. In this position, he could observe closely the development of painting art in Indonesia. He also held many workshops, training and art festival (both small and big) in many places. With all this his life was even more meaningful. In 1969 he took part in a collective exhibition in Taman Ismail Marzuki. He joined many exhibitions and acquired a remarkable prestige. Despite being a government official, he continued producing his best works. It was no wonder that in 1970 he got an opportunity to join The 7th International Biennale Graphic Art in Tokyo, Japan. In November 1970 he also participated in Mostra Internazionale in Rome, Italy. In the following years he saw more opportunities coming his way: participating in the exhibition of International Graphic Art in Milan, Italy (1970); invited together with Haryadi Suadi, Popo Iskandar and Widajat to participate in Adia Oggi Raseggna di Grafica Contemporanea in Milan, Italy (November 1974); Art Trienniale in New Dehli, India (1975); exhibition of Mostra Internationale di Xilogrfia, in Rome, Italy (1979); and 1st International Asian Art Show in Fukouka, Japan (1979). His work entitled “Matahari di Atas Taman” (“The Sun above the Park”, 1974) received an award at the Grand Exhibition of Indonesian Paintings in 1974 together with those by Widayat, Abas Alibasjah, Aming Prayitno and AD Pirous. The exhibition was held in Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta by the Jakarta Art Council. His decorative style of painting is so unique that the public can easily recognize him and his works. And at certain time he rose to become an important figure in the development of fine arts in Indonesia.
