Cover Letter
My name is Miguel Ángel Ramos, I am a Mexican architect, graduated with honours from Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in Mexico. I am currently studying the MA Research Architecture at Goldsmiths University of London. As an architect, I found my profession as a tool to promote sustainable community development, to question the social dynamics and to reflect on design with a multidisciplinary perspective. Architecture demands an open and diverse approach to understand and transform communities. Therefore, my current studies are focused on research, discussing the role of architecture, city and territory regarding human rights and social justice. As part of the Center for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths, I have developed research projects about the cultural condition of migration in the Sahara Desert, “Beside The Borders”(https://besidestheborders.cargo.site/), and women incarceration logistics in London, “Undoing Time” (https://undoingtime.cargo.site/). Currently, I am researching the role of memory in the transformation of the urban environment after a catastrophe, focusing on the earthquake that stroke Mexico City in September 2017. Even when my current activities are academic and mainly critical and theoretical, my professional background was working in an architectural design studio in Mexico City as a project leader. As part of Graus, my job consisted in the design and integral coordination of a different range of architectural projects. The main activity was to solve the design based on the research of the needs of the inhabitant and their activities, the context, the regulations and the technical and constructive conditions that integrated each project. As a project leader, I was primarily responsible for architectural design. In addition, I coordinated the engineering development, collaborated in the budget analysis and supervised the construction process. My job was to be a bridge between the customer needs and the consolidation of a beautiful, functional and sustainable space. Among different commercial and residential projects, the most important project that I designed was an assisted reproduction clinic that required a very meticulous analysis in the development of engineering, in particular, to provide everything necessary to the in vitro fertilization laboratory; in conjunction with the desire of clients to create a unique space with a maximalist interior design; all under a very strict margin of regulations for such a specific typology. As the leader of this project, I was responsible for the architectural design, direct contact with clients, and the coordination of engineering. In addition to constant supervision on the construction site. Hence, it is my desire to continue expanding my path as an architectural designer complemented with my research skills. Is fundamental for my career to be involved and learn from the design and methodologies used in London in the architectural field. I found this as a great opportunity to add my skills and talent to an achitectural office and at the same time, to learn from an experienced and innovative studio. Looking forward to consolidating an interview,
Arch. Miguel Ángel Ramos

Hence, the design followed international regulations such as the Cairo consensus on the IVF laboratory environment. This process required a deep research in the users dinamics; a complex integration of facilities such as medical gases and electricity; a specific material selection; and a design process focused on functionality and the creation of a sophisticated environment for the patients.

“It takes a community to raise a child.” Agustín is a project that synthesizes research about the infrastructure role of public elementary schools in the educational evolution of Mexico over the last century. With an ethnographic focus and based on the premises of making a space flexible, iconic and innovative, this community centre integrates an elementary school, a public amphitheatre, a community kitchen and orchards, a park with learning installations, an agave garden and a public library and playroom, all based on a marginalized suburb in Guadalajara. This creative exploration departed from multidisciplinary research and concluded with a project that bet for the construction of a city attending the children needs, and the main one is the opportunity to be part of a community with the necessary spaces to grow, learn and participate.

Paco is a mixed-use building that integrates housing and amenities, offices, a hostel and a gym, and in an iconic way, a radial market. Its concept departs from the unity of form, function and structure looking forward to generating identity on Insurgentes Avenue. The structural grid of the building defined its shape, generating clear vertical zoning, and allowing Paco’s main ornament to be its structural honesty. In addition, its mixed character is evident by integrating defined geometric volumes intersected in such a way that the building functioning is readable and its use of materials, textures and colour in the volumetry became a landmark for the area. Paco is a contemporary Mexican building with a timeless image.

Victor is a four-level building conformed of three studios and a meditation centre. This project was designed for a philosophy teacher that practices Kadampa Buddhism. He lives in an adult environment, with his sister and mother, who suffer from arthritis. This set the main guidelines for the design: There should be independent spaces for each family member; Every area should be completely accessible for the handicapped; And finally, the whole environment should follow Buddhist principles such as simplicity, austerity and honesty. Victor mixes the public and private, the daily and the spiritual.
