BAVARIAN STATE LIBRARY EXTENSION

Munich _ Arch&Design IV

The starting point of the project was the decision to extend the Library with a new volume mirroring the 1978 enlargement, thus completing an ensemble noted for its clarity and symmetry. While respecting the trees which existed in this area, the plot is divided into three parts: the main part assumes the majority of uses, except for an exhibition area in the connecting piece between the original library and the main building of the extension. The space structure of the main part consists of a sequence of visually connected working spaces placed around the conference hall which is a large floating prism located at the center of the building.

The auditorium and the sloping roof shape the diferent spaces for studying in different atmospheres, some broader and projected outwards, and others more introverted. The front facing the previous extension appears as a simple volume, while in the other facade, the building breaks down into small balconies in contact with the garden and the trees in the plot. The exhibition and administration area is set between the new and old wings of the Library, ensuring interaction with everyday users and occupying a leading position within the activities of this institution.

WATCHOWER AND JETTY NETWORK IN THE BAHÍA DE CÁDIZ NATIONAL PARK Bahía de Cádiz National Park _ Arch&Design II

The objetive of the proposed network is to provide an infrastructure for organized boat and trekking tours throughout the Park. The implementation of the watchtowers network aims to emphasize the wide range of features to be found in the Natural Park. The continuous interaction of tide and land generates multiple and diverse scenarios in the marshes. In addition, the network also aims to enhance the architectural heritage derived from ancient salt industry and defensive structures. Watchtowers are designed to merge into the landscape over time. They consist of a pure and clear prism of rigid concrete, an elemental way to conquer the height from which to observe the environment. On the other hand, thanks to their organic shape, the wooden footbridges connecting each watchtower to a nearby jetty, adapt, to the rigid blocks of stone which work as piers. These concrete blocks are in different levels and used according to the level of the tide. Over time, the environment will take over the structure, and the watchtowers which emerged as clean and pure white prisms, will take on the traces of time, waves and nature, and soon will blend into the landscape. The footway to the Passenger Terminal becomes much more important, as it is a path that reaches the water at some points where certain activities can be developed. The pieces that make up the Terminal building also appear as lost prisms in the middle of the sea.

UNIVERSITY OF SEVILLE TEACHERS AND RESEARCHERS RESIDENCE

Sevilla, Prado de San Sebastiรกn _ Arch&Design IV

The building acquires a significant scale as it is intended to become a new landmark in the dispersed campus that makes up the University of Seville. The outline of the property complies with the maximum allowable volume permitted by the zoning laws of the city, enabling thus the creation of a significant empty space inside. Two parts are easily distinguishable: the private use of the residence on the upper floors is presented as a compact floating cube; Public facilities on the lower levels are connected to the street, freeing up the ground floor as a covered plaza with cafe which shelters from Seville’s intense sunlight.

The building is crossed by an atrium that links all public spaces, providing them with a fundamental unifying character as the purpose of this building is to connect people, the external public with the activities of the university, and researchers and residents themselves. The common spaces on the upper floors take advantage of the views and orientation making them desirable for use as meeting or working spaces. Apartments’ spaces are directly connected to the outside by a semi-enclosed balcony. The apartment and terrace atmosphere can be particulary controlled by the adjustable membrane wich acts as the facade.

REHABILITATION OF THE PISOS DE PINILLOS RESIDENTIAL BLOCK

Sevilla _ final master degree project

This project aims to introduce a residential and productive proposal centered on common spaces, creating an active community that involves all areas of everyday life. Another main objective is to integrate the huge interior courtyard within an urban sequence of public spaces. The original building is composed of 18 blocks of 4 apartments each with no connection between them. The courtyard level is two meters lower than the surrounding streets. The building acts as a barrier between the neighborhood and the inner court, which definitely becomes a residual space since the houses turn their backs on it altogether. The intervention focuses in the contact plane between the building and the courtyard. This plane becomes a space, a veranda that con-

nects the whole interior perimeter of the block. The shared facilities are connected with hierarchically arranged staircases, thus community life is displayed to the courtyard which is entirely preserved as a public space. Most public facilities are found on the right side of the block, including the Coworking, temporary and shared accommodation, a neighborhood center and a dining room; On the other hand the right side becomes more private, consisting of housing and house-workshops. The wall between the houses and the veranda acquires texture, thus becoming a livable space. The apartments take over these small spaces, blurring the last boundary between private and common ground.
