Leather and suntan lotion are not exactly the perfect yin and yang of full-blown tropical desire. Something has to give. A bizarre image of that hooded freak in Pulp Fiction springs to mind but perhaps it’s the Cuba libres kicking in. Calling the bartender a gimp might end up in bloodshed or worse yet sitting in a plexicolored plastic chair at Phuket International Airport waiting for that deportation stamp to dry. It’s hard to tell where the night of madness started and how or it will end anytime soon? Things started off innocently enough at a friend’s villa way high up on the hills in what Hitchcock might have called a “cliffhanger”. Little did I know where it was all going to dead end, as the ice slipped slowly out of the cocktail shaker of my first martini. I drew imaginary lines with my eyes on the set of Amazonian ladies in the pool, speaking some Eastern European twang that ended up more often sounding like “dah. No doubt Obama’s mystery drone ships cruised high above us, taking notes and snapping instagram porn. More alcohol flowed, as buttons came off, three sheets in the wind and was that a blouse that flew by in the night? More is never less; it’s only more as I dove in deep. Her tongue probed the surface of desire just flicking here and there. There was no destination except a low slow fall backwards into the welcome arms of cushions spread out along the floor, amongst the scattered bodies of my fallen comrades.

Seventeen ways to die in Phuket Out the door, out of the clamoring crowds of tortured souls, vampires and the lewd lasciviousness of it all. My flip flops, where were they? Barefoot, drunk and stumbling down a dirt road I could hear the waves lapping at the edge of an ocean. Voices came out of the night, as fire eating torches and bongo drums rocked and rolled with the island breeze. Slowing down, first to a walk and than dropping to my hands and knees I started to crawl, call it retro, or even regression back to my mother’s arms. Bang, my mind went blank as small drops of blood formed on tiny circles on the snowwhite sand. Managing to life my head slowly yet surely I realized I had run straight into the bar. All around I saw people talking yet no sound came out of their lips, only the sound of the night swirling around like white noise. Check, Check. The band played into the night. I drank more, And more. But it was never enough to erase the memory of what happened high up on the hill, where leather and ambition played such a dangerous game. The moon is sinking as last call comes and goes. Barefoot and soulless I shrink off into the night, bent perhaps but far from broken. Not yet, that is. ................................................................... Bill Barnett is Managing Director of C9 Hotelworks, a Phuket based hospitality consulting firm. He also writes the popular online blog www.thephuketinsider.com. Over the past decade he has amassed an extensive wardrobe of shorts, and flip-flops.

Life passed me by in blinding acts of light and darkness. The latter was winning as a wild spotted cougar crouched nearby, ready to devour her prey. Sticking my hand in an oversized aquarium to cool down just a little, a giant blowfish took hold of my finger, slowly and somehow erotically the fish devoured my ring finger. What was the next to go? I wasn’t going to stay around to find out.

When people think of beauty with brains model Nikita Parlevliet, they automatically think of fashion profile. Nikita Parlevliet was born and raised in The Netherlands by her Thai mother and Dutch father. This alluring lingerie & swimsuit model Nikita, has a lot of experience knowing what looks good and what she’s comfortable in. Having done various campaigns for swimsuit and lingerie companies, it wasn’t such a big surprise when she enrolled entrepreneurship with her own swimwear company now known as LOLA Swimwear but from 2014 will transform into NIKKA Swimwear. Before modeling, Nikita studied Media & Communications at the University of Amsterdam. And according to the bio on Nikita’s website, she loves being able to work as both model and a designer. I kind of enjoy the craziness that comes along with designing-timelines, budget, marketing and promoting the brand. I feel grateful and proud when I see women wearing LOLA and seeing how it makes other women feel great in them.” LOLA Swimwear is a collection of swimsuits inspired by the love of travel and exotic beaches Nikita gets to call her home away from home. Just living in different places and different countries gives her a broad understanding of what different types of women from different parts of the world need and want.

“I have always been interested with the way life changes, it’s flow and the challenges it brings. As a 26 years old Canadian action-actor I came to Bangkok almost 3 years ago to gain knowledge in both acting and stunts. I was a skinny little guy so I decided to step up my game and hit the gym not really knowing what to do. I did some research and stumbled across the world of fitness modeling. Instantly loving it, I decided to become an all natural bodybuilder and also pursue fitness modeling. The ‘pirate workout’ picture is me in my 8 months of training in Phuket shooting an action movie and since I am serious about becoming one of the best fitness models in the industry I would workout anywhere, at any chance I would get. For anyone wanting to get started in fitness or lose the extra weight I will tell you now there is absolutely no secret, no fast method, no potion you can drink to make it easier. Just simply figure out what you are going to do with your body, learn about it, make a plan and invest the time and hard work like everyone else who takes it seriously. Transform, train like a ninja, share the journey, leave your legacy, inspire millions. Good luck!!“ facebook.com/GriffonAestheticKings

My personal fitness story does not go far back in time. 5 years ago, as an overweight couch surfer, if I was asked to run 5km, I would have thought you were crazy! It was around this time that my friends convinced me to join a relay triathlon team and unsurprisingly it did not take long before I was bitten by the triathlon bug. In fact, I was so energized by it that 11 month later I was competing in my fist full Ironman (3.8km swim, 180km bike, and 42.2km run) and my second a year later! Fitness has become my way of life and today I am an ACE Qualified Personal Trainer. I now guide others through their journey and offer my experience as I know what is takes to achieve that seemingly impossible dream and change their approach to fitness for a lifetime.

The Xi’an Villa phuket

At THE XI’AN VILLA, we aim to indulge our guests in quality and privacy, to use natural and organic materials and to be as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible. Nestled in 2.5 hectares of lush tropical forest, THE XI‘AN VILLA is an oasis of calm and beauty inspired by one of the oldest cities in China. In this unique villa, your stay will be a memorable one.

The airy and spacious villa blends seamlessly with the lush tropical surrounds incorporating fung shui both inside and outside the large living spaces. The loft-style architecture features expansive wooden decks and a black and red colour scheme throughout reminiscent of Chinese lacquerware.

Distinctive design Construction has been handled in a minimalist way, as a set of hangars where the air moves freely, green plants and trees enter the space and the landscape itself becomes part of the design. The walls are almost exclusively glass but maintain privacy through the use of tropical vegetation. The central space opens up towards the pool and view, with the main deck becoming part of it, part interior, part exterior.

Artistic inspiration THE XI‘AN VILLA’s owner Marc de Champeaux is also the owner of The Gallery, an exclusive showroom for Chinese art, from traditional to contemporary. Marc, who was born in New York, moved to Phuket about eight years ago, after spending many years in other parts of Asia. He grew up in Paris where he first developed his design sense, before spending 25 years living in China. While in China, Marc de Champeaux got involved in the garment and fashion industry, including creating a fashion brand for Chinese youth. This grew over time to a brand with 17 shops in various cities around China.

The harmony and light is accentuated by glass walls, a large infinity pool with lifesize terracotta warriors standing guard and a tropical garden that includes a large number of indigenous fruit trees with rambutans, durians and coconuts available in season.

Seven large bedrooms are available, each with a unique colour scheme. Only natural materials are used to enhance the overall relaxing effect, from wooden floorboards to bamboo fibre sheets.

His shops in Phuket, The Gallery, offer many varieties of Chinese antiques, and an assortment of carved figures and paintings. Oil paintings of the late Chairman Mao Tse-Tung and other political statement art is on show in his shops. Living and travelling in Asia for more than 30 years, Marc has amassed a treasure trove of beautiful reproduction furniture and art pieces that are on display at The Gallery situated on the same grounds. Exploring THE XI’AN VILLA When you enter this villa from the road, you are led through a natural garden with

With large trusses supporting the simple roof above, two large Chinese sculptures guard each side of the main deck as though gazing at the view themselves. A massive canopy protects one side of the deck from the blazing sun, also hanging over the pool itself, creating a visual link towards the view. trees all around you, water features offering soothing sounds as you near the house. The villa itself is entered through a long elevated deck, bordered on one side by a long infinity pool. Behind the pool and fading off to the distance is a tropical forest with a big pond and some unusual natural features, including fields and varieties of palm. On the left as you enter, sit a series of long minimalist structures, joined in form and detailing by the deck on which you stand. As you enter the main central building, a cavernous room opens up in front of you. A large great room presents itself as a vast space, shaped and adorned by countless pieces of contemporary art as well as traditional. The initial feeling is one of the space having been designed for the art, acting as a mere frame for the work within. The sense of ample room, easily fitting a massive sofa, which seems to be able to seat 20 by itself, a large billiards table and a generous dining area, is palpable. Between the art around and above you, and the well arranged décor, the room does not feel cold or overbearing but welcoming instead, yet the space is so large, it can easily contain an interior water feature with a lovely pond full of carp. The eye works the room, glancing at the art from piece to piece, darting from painting to sculpture and back. The structure is black and the ceiling and furniture white so the artwork itself is given centre stage with its variety of colour. I remember a time when I used my modest skills as a guitar player and singer to impress a girl and win her heart. Of course she would win mine with compliments and requests to sing more songs and I would get carried away, filling the room with music and words of longing, sometimes failing to notice that she was on the bed, ready for experiment, politely waiting for me to put my words into practice, analyzing the ceiling with sighs of languid impatience. As I grew up, I learned to address my music to paying audiences and be more to the point when there was a bed nearby and a person willing to try it with me. However, just as it seems music was invented to express love and emotions, the intimacy of a close encounter can become complete if the right music brings the appropriate rhythm and mood for the dance. Some songs have become anthems mainly because they actually render lovemaking not only in their lyrics but in the overall vocal performance. It is interesting to know that the classic “Love to love you baby” was not originally destined to be performed by Donna

Summer herself as she, a practicing Christian, had just come up with the idea and sang it as a demo to be presented to record labels for a singer they would later choose. It is said that while Diana Ross resented the song “Love Hangover”, it took a few glasses of wine for her to fall into it and deliver the sensual vocal performance that made the song a number one hit and Diana Ross a disco diva. “I love you – neither do I” is perhaps the closest translation to the 1970 scandalous duet performance of “Je t’aime, moi non plus” by Serge Gainsbourg and then lover Jane Birkin. “Like the indecisive wave, you go, you go and you come, between my loins, you hold yourself back, no, now come!”. The song was banned in many countries either for the explicit and constant sexual sighs of Birkin, perhaps also in countries where they actually understood the lyrics! England, who didn’t, was the first to make it a number one hit but few know that the song was originally recorded three years before with planetary sex symbol Brigitte Bardot. The superstar, then married to german mogul Gunter Sachs, was having an affair with Gainsbourg and eventually retracted her consent to release the song. Beyond their explicit lyrics and vocal suggestions, the strength of these songs is in the first instance generated by their musicality in the way it addresses the body and the senses.

the music of love

Much in the way Barry White, Marvin Gay, Curtis Mayfield or Prince, to name a few, have a natural ability to create the conditions of desire and lust, it is the power to make one want to dance a special dance (a deeply interlaced one) that gives its nature to their music. So being sexually very crude in lyrics, like Rap loves to be, doesn’t necessarily invite to love making, and if some rappers might want a little romance, most want some groupie love, a tongue up their ass and a blowjob to cap off the night. Not your cup of hot tea Lady? I understand, perhaps it’s a matter of generations. Well something is coming that will probably reconcile dance on the floor and dance in the bed. It’s called Zouk-love, it originates in the carrabean islands and is characterized by a slow, soft and sexual rhythm with candid words of seduction. Whether you are standing or laying, its dance consists in a close body contact moving in waves, he with his hands on her hips, she with her hands on his arm and shoulder. Roberto Martino sings “Tu me touches” (“You touch me”), he is one of a whole new generation of Zouk singers that are taking over the dance floors of the world and soon, your bedroom. In the meantime, tune in on catchfm90.com or show up at Bongo Rum Bar on Surin Beach, Phuket to get a first choice flavor of Zouk-Love.

Chalong Bay Rum

Aiming to repay Thais for their compassion, a Boxing Day Tsunami survivor and her partner have made Phuket the production base for their award-winning rum.

n 26 December 2004, a teenage Marine Lucchini was on holiday in Khao Lak with her family. They had visited this picturesque part of southern Thailand every year for a decade but when the Boxing Day Tsunami struck, their seaside paradise was devastated. Lucchini had no idea of her parents’ whereabouts and was left desperately struggling to survive in the face of the onslaught. Three quarters of the guests staying at the resort died that day. Luckily for Lucchini, she was eventually reunited with her entire family. What struck her in the aftermath was how the Thais had done everything they could to assist the injured and locate the missing, without allowing social or cultural barriers to get in the way. That memory never left her and she vowed to repay the people of Thailand by giving something back to the community that had helped her. As a child growing up in France and then Russia, Lucchini would often accompany her father on the overseas trips he took as part of his work for a wine and spirits company. This included visits to Africa and to Martinique in the French West Indies to visit the famed Saint James rum distillery, whose products he represented. After completing an undergraduate degree, Lucchini went on to business school where she met her future partner – in business and otherwise – Frenchman Thibault Spithakis. Though he has worked in a range of fields, including toy manufacturing in China, 27-year-old Spithakis grew up in the vineyards of the south of France, where his family had made wine for generations. It was an ideal pairing.

58

Having decided to start a project from scratch, the entrepreneurial couple both felt Thailand was the obvious place to base it, and – given the background of their respective families – rum seemed the logical industry to enter. Having conducted market research, they saw that the rum sector – dominated by massmarket local brown rums such as Sang Som and Hong Thong (both produced by industry giant Thai Beverage or ThaiBev), had room for a niche, high-quality product. Realising that competition would be intense in Bangkok, the headquarters for ThaiBev, Singha and other major drinks manufacturers, the pair made the decision to set up shop in Phuket, Thailand’s second largest market and a place where a small, new company could make its mark.

Sugarcane is indigenous to South-East Asia and Thailand is the world’s fourth-largest producer after Brazil, India and China. There are more than 300 varieties of sugarcane in Thailand alone, which Lucchini and Spithakis whittled down to a handful after extensive testing. They next imported a 40-year old Frenchmade copper “alambique” or distillation still, with Lucchini – the “scientist” of the pair – overseeing a centuries-old distilling process that originated in the Armagnac region of southwest France. Once it’s distilled, the rum is put in stainless steel tanks, which helps seal in the taste and aroma. Having come up with their product, the next question was what to call it. Many of the world’s best rums are produced on islands – think Martinique and Saint James, Barbados and Mount Gay – so it made sense to name it after the area that’s home to their distillery. And so Chalong Bay Rum was born. As chalong is Thai for celebration, the choice of name couldn’t have been more appropriate. Before it’d even gone into mass production, Chalong Bay Rum last year won the highest award for a white rum at the industryleading Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition, Asia’s largest such annual awards. The awards draw entries from companies hailing from more than 80 countries.

Another distinguishing characteristic was the fact that they set out to produce 100% natural rum using Thai sugarcane. A quick chemistry lesson: rum is distilled from fermented sugarcane juice, sugarcane syrup, sugarcane molasses or other sugarcane by-products and its manufacture is split into two main categories: industrial and natural. Industrial rums come from the distillation of molasses, a residue of the sugarcane obtained after sugar manufacturing. This represents about 90% of the world’s production, including the offerings of famous names such as Bacardi, Captain Morgan and Havana Club. Natural rum, however, which includes Chalong Bay and Saint James, comes from distilling fresh, fermented sugarcane juice, resulting in a much smoother and more aromatic flavour than its industrially produced counterpart.

Having experienced first-hand the tragedy of one of Thailand’s darkest days, Lucchini’s aim with the company is to offer opportunity to some of those who lost so much. chalongbayrum.com

For more than 15 years, I have been traveling around the tropical regions of the planet working in the hotel industry and teaching holidaymakers about the underwater environment.

In many hotels in the tropics – the Maldives, Thailand, the Caribbean, etc – guests will be taught about the environment, the reefs, scuba diving and snorkeling, but rarely does a hotel take the time or interest in educating its guests about the sun. People will choose a tropical destination for a holiday for many reasons. Perhaps because of the landscape, the activities or the hotel name, but if you really think about this, the main reason why someone will choose to escape to a tropical destination is its warm tropical climate, therefore the SUN. But the sun doesn’t always bring joy to those on a tropical holiday. Why would someone sunburn even using an SPF 50 sunscreen? Why does the skin have an allergic reaction or spots from the sun’s rays?

All these questions are legitimate and would make a difference to your holiday experience. In the Maldives for example, at the main hospital in Male, the most common injury treated for tourists is sunburn. How to achieve a safe and glowing tan while on vacation under the tropical sun?

David Martin

Skin deep: Finding Beauty and Health in the Tropical Sun

Thanks to Esthederm’s products range going beyond SPF and its triple biological cell protection with no filters or screens, we are able to offer sun tanning programs with the most complete protection for safe sun exposure, to all skin photo types, even skin prone to suffer from sun allergies, brown spots or sunburn.

First, it’s essential to understand how the skin stays healthy within its environment. Like coral reefs, which are the largest living structure on earth, the skin is the largest organ of the human body. Both coral reefs and body skin are in direct contact with the environment and they have the natural ability to adapt themselves to different external conditions in order to keep their ecosystem balanced and healthy. However, sometimes they need a little help from us. This is valid for both the reef and the skin.

Sun Spa Esthederm will help you to treat your skin with respect under the tropical sun! www.sunspa-esthederm.com

The sun is the source of life for every living organism. Yes, too much sun exposure is dangerous but the lack of it is as well. In order to get only the benefits from the sun, and minimize its harmful effects, you need to help your skin produce its natural protection (tanning) with the adequate sun protection according to the sun intensity your skin will be exposed to, and your skin photo type. In partnership with Institut Esthederm, the world’s most recognized brand in sun care innovations, we have created the Sun Spa Esthederm concept to help hotels and resorts provide their most demanding clients with a dazzling tan, offering an increasingly personalized and complete range of services. We have developed customized tanning programs with products applied directly to customer’s skin by Esthederm hostesses all day long at the pool or beach. All programs begin with a diagnostic to identify your skin photo type and sun potential.

“Hello everybody...”

I am Imogen Lovell an Australian based glamour model / I live, work and breathe modelling, it’s been a huge part of my life since a young age and has rapidly increased over time growing into my skin while doing what I love / it’s just a big bonus, it keeps me busy and happy all in one.

to be a Victoria Secret model / I think every model wants to be one as they are glamorous with all the right curves and so bubbly and fun / such a great job but / I think it’s a huge dream! A little bit about me: I have a naughty little addiction to sweets / I just love lollies and anything sweet / I never grew out of it and I hate clothes lol / I would rather sit in a bikini and relax around the pool side any day / I am also obsessed with travel / I hate staying in one spot too long / I need to be up in the air flying to a new destination whenever possible / I never stay put for very long. Going to Thailand for the first time when I was roughly 19, all I ever dreamed about was getting my boobs done / I wanted it so bad and when I want something that bad I won’t stop until I get it / I had studied breast augmentations for months, been back and forth with surgeons over the phone and email and made my mind up right there and then I was going to get my boobs done and I was going to do it in Thailand / As a young teenager I was bullied so bad for having no boobs I was called a surf board and every other name under the sun and it made me really insecure with the way I looked and felt about myself / I just wasn’t me so when it was time to fly to Phuket to get my boobs done I was that excited I couldn’t hold back my big smiles of excitement.

I started modelling because I’ve always been that big loud crazy personality and a little hyperactive / ok maybe a lot but it’s a good thing I hope / I get along with anyone and everyone and I love meeting new people and making new friends while travelling the globe so modelling was the adventure I wanted to do as the job entails everything I could dream of doing plus I love getting my photo taken lol. During my career so far I’ve been lucky enough to do all sorts of a wide variety of modelling / from promotional work to catwalks to beauty competitions making them all to the national finals which was a fun experience in itself / then on to travelling the states a few times and being invited to the world famous playboy mansion for the Halloween party and also the golf week / Now I stick mostly to magazine work, I want to be published in more magazines like Maxim and FHM, that’s what I’m working towards at present but I also always wanted

My mum and I went to the Phuket International Aesthetics Center (PIAC), located at the Phuket International Hospital / I had a consultation and decided on the breast size / I was happy with 450cc round implant / after that we went away and a few days later we were picked up by a PIAC staff at our hotel and taken to the hospital ready for surgery at this point / I was nervous but much more excited. We arrived at the hospital and we were both so shocked with the cleanliness of the hospita / it was all marble and the nurses were all so beautiful and dressed so cute I was in shock I couldn’t believe how amazing this hospital was, better then any Australian hospital I had been to ever / So we were shown to my room and it was huge / I had a big bathroom, kitchen balcony over looking the mountains and a big TV and lastly another small bed for my mum to stay over night / I was run through what we were about to do by the doctor then 40 minutes later taken into surgery / they were super efficient.

Surgery went really well / I came to it and I had my mum awaiting me to wake up / I was so blessed to have her with me and stay with me over night / I stayed one night in hospital and I had about 12 nurses onto me helping my every need and checking up on me / they were very beautiful natured, so gentle and they took great care of me / I couldn’t have asked for anything to go more perfectly. After leaving the hospital within 2 days I was up walking round shopping and basically half way back to my former self / still sore of course but doing things which I also never expected to happen / After hearing so many horror stories about Thailand it really did exceed my every dream and much much more / I will never pay or go have surgery anywhere else such as the overly priced Australian surgeries / Anything can go wrong, it’s surgery no matter where you are in the world, it’s just the way things happen but Thailand crushed all those horror stories and since then I’ve been back again to go bigger /Also it inspired us so much my mum started her own business called Beauty Abroad in which she now organises girls & guys trips to go have surgery over at Phuket International Hospital, it’s the only hospital she will work with knowingly first hand how great they truly are / I have not one complaint, my aftercare turned out amazing with minimal scaring under my arms you can not even tell / it’s so great and everyone compliments me on them which is an added bonus as I now get to say go see my mum and I’m walking proof how great PIAC really is. After having them settle in my body it did take me roughly ten days to get used to them, but now I can’t ever think of living without them / they have made me back to that outgoing fun loving bubbly person I am and I’m so grateful / They honestly have turned my life around and I wouldn’t have it any other way / I have two thumbs up for Thailand surgery!

The dildo

A dildo is a sex toy, often explicitly phallic in appearance, intended for bodily penetration during masturbation or sex with partners. Description and uses A dildo is a sexual device resembling an erect penis in shape, size, and overall appearance. Some expand this definition to include vibrators. Others exclude penis prosthetic aids, which are known as “extensions”. Some include penisshaped items clearly designed with vaginal penetration in mind even if they are not true approximations of a penis. Some people include devices designed for anal penetration (butt plugs) while others do not. These devices are often used by people of all genders and sexual orientations, for masturbation or for other sexual activity. Uses Vaginal and/or anal penetration are the obvious uses. Dildos have fetishistic value as well, and some users wield them in other ways, running them over the skin during foreplay for example. If of appropriate sizes, they can be used as gags, for oral penetration for a sort of artificial fellatio. Some people also use specially designed dildos to stimulate the G-spot. A dildo to be inserted in the anus and remain in place for a period of time is called a butt-plug. Dildos used for repeated anal penetration, such as thrusting, are usually referred to as simply “dildos” and must have a flared base to be safe for anal play. There are also double-ended dildos, with differentsized shafts pointing in the same direction, used by women to accomplish both anal and vaginal penetration at once, or for two partners to share a single dildo. In this case, the dildo acts as a sort of “see-saw”; each partner takes an end and receives stimulation. There are dildos designed to be worn in a harness, sometimes called a strap-on harness or strap-on dildo, or to be worn inside, sometimes with vibrating devices attached externally. Strap-on dildos may be double-ended, in which case they are meant to be worn by users who want to experience vaginal or anal penetration while also penetrating a partner. They may also be used for anal penetration of men. If the penetration is done by a female partner to a

82

male partner, the act is known as pegging. Other types of dildos include those designed to be fitted to the face of one party, inflatable dildos, and dildos with suction cups attached to the base (sometimes referred to as a wall mount). Other types of harness mounts for dildos (besides strapping to the groin) include thigh mount, face mount, or furniture mounting straps. Recent social acceptance and popularity has resulted in the emergence of highly adorned dildos. These are often made of expensive materials and may also be jewelled.

History Dildos in one form or another have been present in society throughout history. Artifacts from the Upper Paleolithic which have previously been described as batons were most likely used for sexual purposes. However, there appears to be hesitation on the part of archaeologists to label these items as sex toys: as archaeologist Timothy Taylor put it, “Looking at the size, shape, and—some cases—explicit symbolism of the ice age batons, it seems disingenuous to avoid the most obvious and straightforward interpretation. But it has been avoided.”

Etymology The etymology of the word dildo is unclear. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) describes the word as being of “obscure origin”. One theory is that it originally referred to the phallus-shaped peg used to lock an oar in position on a dory (small boat). It would be inserted into a hole on the side of the boat, and is very similar in shape to the modern toy. It is possible that the sex toy takes its name from this sailing tool, which also lends its name to the town of Dildo and the nearby Dildo Island in Newfoundland, Canada. Others suggest the word is a corruption of Italian diletto (for “delight”). According to the OED, the word’s first appearance in English was in Thomas Nashe’s The Choice of Valentines or the Merie Ballad of Nash his Dildo (c. 1593). The word also appears in Ben Jonson’s 1610 play, The Alchemist. William Shakespeare used the term once in The Winter’s Tale, believed to be from 1610 or 1611, but not printed until the First Folio of 1623. The phrase “Dil Doul”, referring to a man’s penis, appears in the 17th century folk ballad “The Maids Complaint for want of a Dil Doul”. The song was among the many in the library of Samuel Pepys. Olisbos (pl. olisboi) is a classical term for a dildo, from the Greek i.e. a dildo that was usually made by leather. A godemiché is a dildo in the shape of a penis with scrotum. In some modern languages, the names for dildo can be more descriptive, creative or subtle—note, for instance, the Russian (“phallic imitator”), the Hindi darshildo, the Spanish consolador (“consoler”), and the Welsh cala goeg (“fake penis”).

The world’s oldest known dildo is a siltstone 20-centimeter phallus from the Upper Palaeolithic period 30,000 years ago that was found in Hohle Fels Cave near Ulm, Germany. The first dildos were made of stone, tar, wood and other materials that could be shaped as penises and that were firm enough to be used as penetrative sex toys. Dildo-like breadsticks, known as olisbokollikes were known in Ancient Greece prior to the 5th century BC. Chinese women in the 15th century used dildos made of lacquered wood with textured surfaces. Nashe’s early-1590’s work The Choice of Valentines mentions a dildo made from glass. With the invention of modern materials, there appeared the possibility of making dildos of different shapes, sizes, colors and textures. There have been many references to dildos in the historical and ethnographic literature. Haberlandt, for example, illustrates single and double-ended wooden dildos from late 19th century Zanzibar. Dildos in culture Dildos may be seen in Greek vase art. Some pieces show their use in group sex or in solitary female masturbation. One vessel, of about the 6th century BC, depicts a scene in which a woman bends over to perform oral sex on a man, while another man is about to thrust a dildo into her anus. They are mentioned several times in Aristophanes’ comedy of 411 BC, Lysistrata. Lysistrata And so, girls, when fucking time comes… not the faintest whiff of it anywhere, right? From the time those Milesians betrayed us, we can’t even find our eight-fingered

You ladies all of merry England Who have been to kiss the Duchess’s hand, Pray, did you not lately observe in the show A noble Italian called Signor Dildo? ... leather dildos. At least they’d serve as a sort of flesh-replacement for our poor cunts… So, then! Would you like me to find some mechanism by which we could end this war? Page duBois, a classicist and feminist theorist, suggests that dildos were present in Greek art because the ancient Greek male imagination found it difficult to conceive of sex taking place without penetration. Therefore female masturbation or sex between women required an artificial phallus to be used. In the early 1590s, the playwright Thomas Nashe wrote a poem known as The Choice of Valentines, Nashe’s Dildo or The Merrie Ballad of Nashe his Dildo. This was not printed at the time, due to its obscenity. However, it was still widely circulated and made Nashe’s name notorious. The poem describes a visit to a brothel by a man called “Tomalin”; he is searching for his sweetheart, Francis, who has become a prostitute. The only way he can see her is to hire her. However, she resorts to using a glass dildo as he finds himself unable to perform sexually to her satisfaction. Dildos are humorously mentioned in Act IV, scene iv of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. This play and Ben Jonson’s play The Alchemist (1610) are typically cited as the first usage of the word in publication (Nashe’s Merrie Ballad was not published until 1899). John Wilmot, the 17th century English libertine, published his poem Signor Dildo in 1673. During the Parliamentary session of that year, objections were raised to the proposed marriage of James, Duke of York, brother of the King and heir to the throne, to Mary of Modena, an Italian Catholic Princess. An address was presented to King Charles on 3 November, foreseeing the dangerous consequences of marriage to a Catholic, and urging him to put a stop to any planned wedding ‘...to the unspeakable Joy and Comfort of all Your loyal Subjects.” Wilmot’s response was Signior Dildo (You ladies all of merry England), a mock address anticipating the ‘solid’ advantages of a Catholic marriage, namely the wholesale importation of Italian dildos, to the unspeakable joy and comfort of all the ladies of England:

84

This ballad, which was later set to music by Michael Nyman for the Wilmot biopic, The Libertine, was subsequently added to by other authors, and became so popular that Signor became a term for a dildo. In the epilogue to The Mistaken Husband (1674), by John Dryden, an actress complains: To act with young boys is loving without men. What will not poor forsaken women try? When man’s not near, the Signior must supply. Dildos are obliquely referred to in Saul Bellow’s novel “The Adventures of Augie March”(1953) : “....he had brought me along to a bachelor’s stag where two naked acrobatic girls did stunts with false tools”. A dildo called Steely Dan III from Yokohama appears in the William S. Burroughs novel The Naked Lunch (1959). The rock band Steely Dan took their name from it. Materials Rubber dildos, usually incorporating a steel spring for stiffness, became available in the 1940s. This was a less than satisfactory arrangement because of the potential for injury from cuts by the spring when decrepit rubber cracked and came apart. Later, PVC dildos with a softer PVC filler became popular. Most of the inexpensive dildos sold today are made this way. PVC and jelly-rubber toys have often been found to be problematic because they contain unsafe phthalates, softeners added to many plastics that are also found in some jewelry, food containers, and other soft rubber toys. Phthalates have been linked to health problems such as cancer and prenatal defects. Products made of PVC or jelly rubber cannot be sterilized. Manufacturers recommend using condoms with these toys if users share them. In the 1990s, silicone rubber dildos became more popular, a trend that has continued as the prices have lowered. These are easier to clean and do not have the characteristic plastic aroma of PVC. They were expensive when introduced but are now reasonably priced, making them an excellent choice for the first-time user. Silicone holds body heat well, and is an excellent conductor of vibrations, allowing users to hold a vibrator at one end. Silicone is also a robust material (especially when compared to the cheap,

unsafe jelly rubber that many dildos are made of) that can be sterilized by boiling or bleaching (using a bleach solution, diluted: 10% bleach 90% water). High-end, chrome plated steel dildos are also popular in the BDSM scene. Some users prefer them because of their hardness, firmness, durability, electrical conductance, and low friction, especially when used in conjunction with lubricant. Because they are heavy, they can be used to exercise vaginal PC muscles. A steel dildo may be warmed or cooled in water before use to elicit a range of temperature sensations. It may also retain body heat of the user. Because of its polished nonporous surface, it may be sterilized in boiling water, or in an autoclave. Glass dildos have similar features to steel ones. In most of the cases, glass toys are solid, and made of Pyrex or other types borosilicate glass (Schott-Duranglas and Simax), although this may vary, depending on the manufacturer. Like steel, glass toys may be used to apply firmer pressure than silicone can to a female’s G-spot (urethral sponge) or male’s prostate gland. Unlike other types of toys, glass sex toys can also be personalized with inscriptions. Cyberskin is a synthetic material that feels more like human skin. It is a porous material and cannot be sterilized. It often gets sticky after washing (which can be remedied by a dusting of cornstarch) and is more delicate and more prone to rips and tears than silicone dildos. “Packing dildos”, which are not designed for penetration, are often made of this material. Phallus-shaped vegetables and fruits, such as bananas or zucchini have even been used as dildos, possibly since prehistory. Smooth rocks of phallic shape are suited to use as a dildo. Any object of sufficient firmness and shape could be hypothetically used as a dildo. Shape Conventionally, many dildos are shaped like a human penis with varying degrees of detail, others are made to resemble the phallus of male animals. Not all, however, are fashioned to reproduce the male anatomy meticulously, and dildos come in a wide variety of shapes. These may resemble figures, or simply be practical creations which stimulate more easily than conventional designs. In Japan, many dildos are created to resemble animals or cartoon characters, such as Hello Kitty, so that they may be sold as toys, thus avoiding obscenity laws. Some dildos have textured surfaces to enhance sexual pleasure. wikipedia.org

Cirque dU Soleil

From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is a major Québec-based organization providing highquality artistic entertainment. The company has 5,000 employees, including more than 1,300 artists from more than 50 different countries.

Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million spectators in more than 300 cities in over forty countries on six continents. The mission The mission of Cirque du Soleil is to invoke the imagination, provoke the senses and evoke the emotions of people. The Creation of Cirque du Soleil It all started in Baie-Saint-Paul, a small town near Québec City in Canada. There, in the early eighties, a band of colourful characters roamed the streets, striding on stilts, juggling, dancing, breathing fire, and playing music. They were Les Échassiers de Baie- Saint-Paul (the Baie-Saint-Paul Stiltwalkers), a street theatre group founded by Gilles Ste- Croix. Already, the townsfolk were impressed and intrigued by the young performers – including Guy Laliberté who founded Cirque du Soleil.

112

The troupe went on to found Le Club des talons hauts (the High Heels Club), and then, in 1982, organized La Fête foraine de BaieSaint-Paul, a cultural event in which street performers from all over met to exchange ideas and enliven the streets of the town for a few days. La Fête foraine was repeated in 1983 and 1984. Le Club des talons hauts attracted notice, and Guy Laliberté, Gilles Ste-Croix and their cronies began to cherish a crazy dream: to create a Québec circus and take the troupe travelling around the world. In 1984, Québec City was celebrating the 450th anniversary of Canada’s discovery by Jacques Cartier, and they needed a show that would carry the festivities out across the province. Guy Laliberté presented a proposal for a show called Cirque du Soleil (Circus of the Sun), and succeeded in convincing the organizers. And Cirque du Soleil hasn’t stopped since! Some interesting facts • Moleskin is the type of Lycra most used at Cirque du Soleil. • Among the materials most commonly used in making and designing costume accessories are an array of composite materials such as silicone, latex, plastics, fabrics, leathers, foams and urethane. • In OVO, which is inspired by insects, the dragonfly’s wings are evoked by pants made of veined lace, and the mosquito’s stinger by a ‘Mohawk’ of fine red stems. The ten crickets have detachable legs that break away from their bodies, which give the impression that there is an insect invasion going on. • Before proceeding with making a costume, the artisans use a new system that takes specific measurements, from head to toe, for each artist, in a few minutes. • The Bungee costumes used in Mystère each have over 2,000 hand-glued sequins. • The wig that takes the longest time to make is the one worn by the Diana character in KÀ. It takes more than four weeks to make such a complex piece. It requires the

implementation of two cones on the top and then it is fully ventilated, hair by hair. The wig is then carefully cut and styled. It is renewed four times a year. • The Workshop artisans created a continuous spiral effect for the Trickster costume in KOOZA. The same line starts at the hat, goes through the jacket and ends at the shoes. As a result, it echoes the image of a big top to perfection. • Each costume in the Celestial/Human Nature scene of the show Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour is equipped with 275 blinking LED lights specially designed for the show. They change color during the song to evoke constellations. • The Crystal Man is a recurring character in the show TOTEM who represents the life force. His (literally) dazzling costume is entirely covered in small mirrors and crystals to create a ball of energy when he comes down from the sky in a beam of pure white light. The glittering mobile mosaic is made up of about 4,000 mirrors of three different sizes and 155 crystals on a stretch velvet leotard. • In Zarkana, the lead singer, who plays three of the four mutants, had her entire body, together with the harness she wears throughout the show, scanned with 225 precise measurements. The data were used to produce a cast that minimized the need for in- person costume fittings.

heavenly food served by angels

The 9th Floor Restaurant and Bar is a hidden gem of style, good taste and elegance....a parallel universe of refinement set amidst the downtown bustle of an unlikely corner of Patong.

The Sky Inn Condotel towers over a car park just off Rat-U-Thid Road in Patong and seems to be an unlikely place to find one of Phuket’s most successful fine dining restaurants. As you enter the down-at-heel elevator taking you up to the eponymous 9th Floor Restaurant and Bar, you can be forgiven for thinking; “This can’t be the right place,” as many others have done before you. But when the elevator doors slide apart you’ll find yourself entering a parallel universe of elegance, style, wonderful views over Patong, fabulous cuisine and beautiful black-clad waitresses welcoming you with an inviting “Wai” of Thai greeting.

You may well drift into the warm convivial space in a dream-like state taking in the huge floor-to ceiling glass windows with the lights of the crueller, chaotic world of Patong twinkling below you. You’ll notice the Andaman Sea dancing to the horizon beyond and perhaps there’s even a golden full moon hanging silently in the night sky above it all. Sea breezes waft in gently from the Andaman through the huge windows as you seat yourself at the bar which serves terrific cocktails, local and international beers and offers a wine cellar with over 300 labels featuring a comprehensive selection of classic European wines, established New World favorites and emerging vintners and regions. Perhaps you

118

decide to start with one of the chilled house wines which you can order by the glass, and with your first sip you become aware of the cool jazz sounds playing in the background; notice the wine glasses sparkling in the candle glow, and realise from the chic décor and warm ambience that you have discovered somewhere very special. One of the black-clad angels appears as if by magic and hands you a menu to peruse. You discover it lists a wide selection of some of the best awardwinning Mediterranean food in Thailand, as well as Alpine specialities and a superb Thai selection of dishes. You’ll be delighted to learn that the internationally - trained Chef Wara Pakdeevirote has been eight years in the kitchen since the 9th Floor was launched, and forms a perfect team with the ever-present and knowledgeable Manager Thomas Brack in delivering a gastronomic experience which is professional and charming in equal measure.

“just a pretty face” when it comes to recommending food and wine pairings from the 9th Floor’s 300 plus label cellar.

The 9th Floor has featured in the Thailand Tatler’s Best Restaurants in Thailand selection every year since 2009 and has established itself as a gem of good taste in Phuket with a huge following of discerning supporters, both with local residents and regular visitors to Phuket alike. It is also a firm favorite for birthday parties and special occasions and runs regular wine and food pairing dinners. Many passionate supporters return to the 9th Floor year after year when they visit, or stay in Phuket, giving the restaurant the feel of a sociable European Members’ club. Indeed it’s a sign of a truly great restaurant when one has to book a year in advance to get a table for key dates such as Christmas Eve, Valentine’s Night, or New Year’s Eve, but this is in fact the case at 9th Floor.

You might decide that a delightful way to dine is to mix and match with Thai specialities such as yam talay - warm mixed Thai seafood salad in a spicy lime chili dressing, mixed with local seafood favorites such as king prawns flambé with cognac and then a distinctive dish of Alpine origin such as Raclette - the traditional Valais mountain cheese melted in a personal oven at your table with pickles and steamed potato in their skins. Be sure to plan your meal well though, in order to leave space for the 9th Floor’s offering of delicious desserts and great cheese selection, as it’s the sort of place where you want to linger long into the evening enjoying it all. Thomas Brack, or one of the well-informed waitresses, is always happy to help you to compile such a gastronomic tour de force and indeed a number of the waitresses have completed several courses of sommelier training and therefore are a lot more than

All in all it’s fair to say that there is nowhere else in Phuket quite like the 9th Floor and when you would like to enjoy “heavenly food served by angels” it’s nice to know that this is one establishment that actually lives up to its advertising slogan!
