The commodification of the balcony transfers value from function – providing outdoor-quality spaces in dense, urban settings – to social status, view matters more than usefulness. Balconies are simply a belvedere to celebrate wealth. Apply commodity as the standard, what happens when the view is not compelling? What then, is the purpose of the balcony? Rethinking the infill house means rethinking the viewing platform: the balcony. The new balcony should be a space large enough to hold different activities, instead of reducing its function to a view. What if the balcony is an extension of the apartment unit? The façade no longer would be a part of the outer skin of the building, but act as transition element between the public and private realm. This transition allows the introduction of a garden between the building and the façade. This requires rethinking the connection between the unit indoor and outdoor space. This element unites interior with exterior by pivoting in both directions. The balcony can accommodate moments and activities on either side, but when it’s fully open it creates an extension of the interior space.
