Master’s Final Project (PFC): “Tourism is a Great Invention” Tutor: Josean Ruiz Esquíroz. 2018-2019. Original title: El Turismo es un Gran Invento Established in Madrid in 1975, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation forecasts a exponential growth of touristic travels. However the UNWTO Headquarters don’t reveal the leading role of this institution. Answering this programme, a new tower emerges on the northern landscape of Madrid. The whole complex includes a hotel, retail, leisure and the offices distributed on the site as a mat-building and rising from it up to 200m on the ground. The tower evolves from a square plan to a sheared rectangle due to its parametricdesigned façade, resulting in splendid balconies for each hotel bedroom. This project talks about the traditional destinations of tourism as much as it faces the reality of the moment: the overcrowded downtowns of our cities. Regarding the past it proproses a new way to visit, work and live in our cities through mass tourism. Will be soon published at: https://archive.dpa-etsam.com/

Master’s Final Project (PFC): “Masterplan: Sheaf of Axis” Tutor: Josean Ruiz Esquíroz. 2018-2019. Original title: Haz de Ejes Chamartin Borough is the key project for Madrid future growth. Deserved by a strong transport system, this area is aimed to be the main bussiness district of Madrid. Nevertheless, mixture of uses is assured by a base-and-tower typology which defines the streets with retail and offices while allows residential towers to rise. The core of the district is meant to be the new Chamartin Station from which a sheaf of streets diverge forming a grid over the railways. Crossing the whole area, the Diagonal Street sews the neighborhood from south-east to north-west, finishing in a major eye catcher: the new tower of the United Nations World Tourism Organization. The limit of the district will be defined by a green belt which reduces the air and acoustic pollution of the highways and creates a coherent green infrastructure to enhance the biodiversity.

Architectural Design 7: “Nuevos Ministerios Neighborhood” Professor Juan Herreros. Fall 2017 Nuevos Ministerios is a main building of the XXth century architecture of Madrid. It is located on the intersection of two major axis : Castellana and Cea Bermúdez Avenues. Nevertheless, it is as well an urban limit for Chamberí neighborhood avoiding any relation between this part of the city and Castellana Avenue. Built for the new departments of the República, its radical rational façades were lately covered with a Franquist language after the Civil War. The idea of the project was to create a new neighborhood through the identity. I searched for the elements that made this place singular: the language of the building and the “Ensanche” urban layout. The project answered then to different scales: monumental façades to the main avenues, new light façades to the inner streets and small squares inside the blocks. The original language became a pattern with which reproduce all new features: structure, composition, proportions... all based on the original order.

Architectural Design 6: “Progetto Flaminio” Professor Emilio Tuñón. Fall 2015 Project Flaminio is a competition made by Rome Town Hall to regenerate an old military factory. The site is especially well located: the natural entrance to Rome from the north and surrounded of main buildings such as the MAXXI, the Auditorium della Musica and the Palazzetto dello Sport. The main ideas of the project were to densify the neighborhood, open the site to the surroundings and to preserve some of the ancient industrial facilities for patrimonial reasons. The course was divided in four exercises: a patrimonial intervention on the warehouses, a theater, an urban project and a Museum of Sciences. The rehabilitation of the warehouse consisted on a center of employment and housing for refugees. For the theater I proposed a “digital theater”, more of an object than a building itself. The urban plan was drawn following the diagonal axis, framed by collective housing which enclosed semi-public squares. Finally, the museum was a big outstanding piece of light steel structure organized by areas of knowledge.

Seville Traditional Architecture and Urbanism Summer School Organized by the Rafael Manzano Prize and University of Notre-Dame Architecture School. Summer 2016. This summer school was aimed at studying the sevillian traditional architecture and urban fabric. During two weeks thirty architects and students have attend to lessons given by the professors of the Notre-Dame School of Traditional Architecture, as well as practical lessons studying the urban fabric, architectural elements and faรงades on site. This knowledge was the starting point of an urban project on the abandon Cruzcampo brownfield. This project has been published in different architecture magazines like ArchDaily Spain and Architecture and Traditional Building Crafts.

Environmental and city planning: Tielmes Professor JosĂŠ FariĂąa. Spring 2015 This course focused on territorial and landscape analysis. The studying case was Tielmes, a rural town in the south of Madrid region. During the first part of the course we developed a territorial, physic, social and landscape analyze. These maps were produced with GIS programs. In the second part of the course we were asked to propose a climate adapted public space. My proposal was placed on a torrent bed, in the edge of the built town. Preparing this space for floods was the main idea, as well as protecting it from the strong sun of midday with a pergola. The use pavement was meant to be permeable, to allow the floods to be absorbed by the soil.

Internship at fbcc: “Landarerov Park at Bratislava” During a four months long internship at the German-French studio fbcc, I was mainly charged on the definition of the construction project of Landererov Park. Šafárikovo Park is a central public space of the city of Bratislava, Slovakia. With more than 10.000 m2, this park is settled on the ancient site of the Landererov Palace, which was demolished in 1944. In 2016 the City Hall organized a competition for the urban renewal of the park and the promenade over the Danube. Fbcc won the competition and was commanded to prepare the construction project. The project’s main idea was to change the asphalt pavement into grass, keeping the original trace of the streets. A pavilion was also design, standing out of the meadow. For the construction project every detail was design, including the different trees, herbs and pavements. Electric and plumbing facilities were as well changed to light and water the park.

Internship at fbcc: “Völklinger Hütte Competition” Völklinger Hütte is an ancient steel factory close to the border between Germany and France. Nowadays it is a cultural center and museum as it is recognized as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. In 2017 a competition to restructure the entrance to the complex by the water tower was announced and fbcc got to pass the first round of the competition. For the second round, our proposal was to revalue the water tower as a central point of the site. Not only as an entrance, but also like a catalyzer to connect all the flux and activate the huge complex. A free ground floor received the visitors, were they could buy the tickets and pass to the museum crossing the machinery room. The roughness of the old concrete structures dialogues with the softness and lightness of the glazing walls which embraced the original building, covering its gaps.
