HELPS PILGRIMS OF C.ESPICHEL WITH ROOMS, SHOWERS AND FOOD
SUPPORT CENTER FOR PILGRIMS Cabo Espichel, Sesimbra Cabo Espichel is the far East point of Portugal. Near to Sesimbra, this area has a big cultural and historical context. The sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo and the Lighthouse of Cabo Espichel are part of the nature of this place. The main idea of this project was to create a temporary support center for pilgrims which was turned to itself becoming quite and private. The prupose for pilgrims was really important in order to develop my project. I put myself in pilgrims mind and tried to understand the purpose of them on visiting that area. This fact lead me to the concept of creating a pavillion that should be closed for those who were outside whereas completly open for oceans horizon and for the sanctuary as well. In order to do that, I created directions to the santuary resulting in a “courtyard�, inspired on the state of mind of pilgrims in peregrination. At this time they are turned to themselves and to their inner faith. Contraring the sanctuary, my intervention opens to the ocean and to the sanctuary. In this way I created a mirror effect but at the same time reversed. In this way, the project follows the main road, pointing the direction to the sanctuary.

The concept that the pavililon is all turn to himself is to reflect the faith of this believers in god. As that, the project only has openings in the interior for the courtyard, with an exception for the multifunction room which has a big window turned to the sanctuary and this is accentuated with the walls direction. The courtyard provides a self accommodation fairly much unique and personal with the horizon. From the bar is still possible to see the sanctuary trough the multifunctiion room. So the guests will never lose the sanctuary from sight.

A TOWER THAT PROVIDES A COMPLETE VIEW OF LISBON

The area of the intervention was choosen by me due to the characteristics of that place, like the view over the river and the absence of big buildings on that area, with the exception of the National Palace. A tower on that place will provide a complete view over the city, over the river and all around with a huge panoramic. My concept was based on a panoramic view, with a strong and high stucture. With this the tower will be viewed from the city entrance bridge ‘25 of April’, creating a mark which arouses curiosity. The hexagon comes from the Lisbon history and his size was defined taking into account the palace towers.
In the ground, I created two levels with green areas for population. The structure is composed by 4 concrete structures and at the inside a huge emergency stair. This structure involves the lifts and at the time we go up the stucture start to disappear offering a great view until the top. At the top there is a panoramic restaurant with two levels to provide the best view for all visitants. The terrace is multi function, it can be a bar, a gallery or used for live music.

The relationship between the parking lot and the park were crucial. The main ideia was to create a park which interacts with the parking lot, becoming one. In this way, at the same time that the parking lot grows, the park follows it. As a result, I created a hidden parking lot from one side and a hidden park from the opposite side. A parking lot with a garden roofing results in a differen park providing differents points of view and distinguish experiences.

In the middle of the park is placed a water mirror to illus trate reflections of the park and the city. This mirror is under the ground level to create different levels of s urrounding s eats . The firs t level of the park is dis tinguis hed by the undulated s urface which create a natural atmos phere where people can relax and lay down. Simultaneous ly, this was thought to hide the opening from the parking lot. Therefore, the parking lot timidly reveals behind columns and bus hes . On the las t level of the garden there is placed a coffee bar with an overall view of the organic park.. This bar is eas ily achieved from the middle s tairs or from the parking lot lifts . The parking lot is open for the wes t and north s treet with the facade compos ed by a rhythm of wood s trips , providing a natural orange light in the interior parking lot environment, due to the s un and the wood. With this , the parking lot has a huge interaction with the s treets , dis tinguis hing it from the normal parks . There is a different environment turning away from the cold tones of the common parking lots .

The main problem was the lack of interaction between both s hoppings , the abs ence of public s paces and the need for green areas . The s treet is a long s traight road, where mos t drivers exceed the s peed limit, with parking areas in front of the s hopping centers .

The interface and s paces are des ign to accommodate in the bes t way the gues ts with contemporary architecture, although remaining s ome details of the old his toric building, s uch as the interior of the facade.
