Migrate from Joomla 1.0.x to Joomla 1.5

Welcome to the tutorial that will try to explain how to install Joomla 1.5 and migrate site from Joomla 1.0.x to this new installation. This tutorial will cover basic Joomla 1.5 installation and preparation of Joomla 1.0.x site for migration. Let start tutorial by installing Migrator component in Joomla 1.0.x site (lets call it old site). You can downlaod Migrator component by visiting the following URL: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/pasamioprojects/frs/. Log in to Joomla backend and follow the steps to install component. Click “Installers” -> “Components”:

Now we must prepare SQL migration script that we will use later during Joomla 1.5 installation. Click “Components” -> “Migrator”. Find (at the end of the page) link with text “Create SQL Migration File” and click it.

Screen that will appear will present content that can be included in migration script. You can leave all the checkboxes checked by default.

Click “Start migration� to begin script building process. If you have a site with lot of content screen will refresh it self few times with progress.

After the process of building migration script finishes the following screen will show up.

Now, click “Download” link to download resulting script to local disk. We will use this file later during Joomla 1.5 installation.

You can logout from Joomla backend now. Let’s start Joomla 1.5 installation. Go to the URL that contains your Joomla 1.5 installation. You have to upload Joomla-1.5.0.zip to your server first and unpack it there.

Choose language that will be used during installation and click “Next” button. On the following screen pay attention to the text written in green (or red) if you have some errors. If everything is green, click “Next” button. If you have some errors try to solve those issues before clicking “Next” button.

The licence page will show up. Read it if you want and than click “Next” button.

Fill in the details of your Mysql server and database credentials to connect to database. Click “Next” to procede with the installation.

Enable FTP transfer to your host if you like and fill in asked details. At the end click “Next” button.

Now we have finally come to the crucial step for our Joomla migration. We will now use our migration script that we created at the beginning of this tutorial.

Input the following data: 1. click “Load migration script� to enable the rest of input fields under it 2. input Old Table Prefix. By default it is jos_

3. choose Old Site Encoding. You will have to check this on your old site. This information is needed so the installation script can convert corectly the site content to UTF-8 that will be used with new site 4. browse for the migration script that we built earlier 5. check This script is a Joomla! 1.0 migration script check box 6. click on the button Upload and Execute You will have to wait for the script to upload. After the process is finished you will see the following screen.

Click “Next” button. The “Configuration” page will be reloaded but now you will be able to input only site name and admin details. Input asked details and click “Next”.

Your Joomla 1.5 installation and Joomla 1.0.x content migration is finished. The last step that you sholud do to be able to login to your new Joomla backend is to erase installation folder in your new Joomla 1.5 installation.
