To the Class of 2019 — a class of uninhibited feelings, and the people most likely to spend too much money on Senior Assassin only to get out the next day. A letter from ASB President Jon Na:
Hey guys, this is it. The culmination of everything we’ve been working towards. The way I see it, most people will approach this one of two ways. They’ll either be: A, beyond happy that all those sleepless nights, crowded hallways and negative lunch account balances are behind them; or B, sad that they are leaving all their favorite teachers, classes and underclassmen friends behind. There’s a third option too, C, where they, like me, are a mixture of both. Time is so fleeting, isn’t it? It seems like just yesterday that we walked in through those double doors into MIHS for the first time as students. It was all so intoxicating. Everything seemed like a step up from middle school. The teachers, lunches and general environment felt like we had traded a tired old hen for a golden calf. While it was nice to be in a new place — you know, mix things up a little — the realization of how long we would be here slowly dawned on us, turning happiness into distress. It felt like graduation would be lifetimes away. But now, we’re here. And we’re that much better for sticking with it this long. Being here has given us all unique opportunities, whether we realize them or not. Since we’ve all known each other for years, we’ve practically grown up together. The island, our family and our friends have changed, and so have we along with them. I’d like to think that our time at this school has given each of us a fond memory we’ll carry with us for the rest of our days. Volume VIII, Edition VII

I’d also like to think that even our difficult, unpleasant memories have taught us valuable lessons that make us better people. When I was a junior, I struggled through my AP classes. I was too proud to ask for help because I felt that asking for it would not only make whomever helped me think that I was inept, but that the ask itself would be a major disturbance. I could have saved a lot of trouble if I had known back then what I know now: no one should ever be afraid to ask for help. Some of the biggest problems in the world exist because people feel like they are too much of a burden, and those who want to help don’t know about it. There is strength in vulnerability. After all, in a class that’s like a family, we all share a state of mind. When one person is healthy, we’re all healthy. When one person suffers, we all suffer. It is my hope that wherever we go next, we’ll all be connected in some way. I also hope that some day in the distant future when I’m at a random cafe, I’ll see one of you and we’ll have a long conversation to catch up. That’s all I have to say. Thanks for the good times and memories, everyone. I’ll miss you guys and I hope you guys will miss me. See you on the flip. Truly yours,
Jon

8 SENIOR REFLECTIONS NIA TATE
mihsislander.org
Over the four years I have grown into being a more confident and experimental person. Looking back as a freshman, I was constantly making excuses for other people and feeling the need to apologize when I wasn’t in the wrong. But now as a senior, I’ve started to embrace all my traits and faults; not only embrace them but build on them to make these traits be the thing that shines through the most. This year I started experimenting with my hair. More often it’s braids, extensions and even an afro. This was something I used to be nervous to do and would never believe I could do. But now I’m proud to say that I am proud of who I am.
NAK NAYAR I advise current and future MI students to embrace everyone and make as many friends as possible. There is no space or reason for hate. Make the last 4 years of your MI career memorable.

Dear current and future MI students, One piece of advice that I have for you (and one that I wish I had followed) is to always be curious. Always being curious will allow you to take that one extra step that most others will not take. Some examples of being curious include prepping beyond just answering the “discussion questions” for a discussion, or finding out how and why a formula works instead of just memorizing it. Looking back at my four years of high school, I have realized that although I was excellent at following directions, I was not curious. I was no different than most of the class, and worst of all, I did not make the most out of time in high school. My answer to most questions were always “I don’t know” or “I’m not sure.” This became a problem when I have to start answering important questions for myself, such as what I want to study and why I want to study it. I believe that the reason for this is that my first instinct was to always shut things out instead of keeping an open mind. I hope that you will keep an open mind to all of your activities, and make the most out of your opportunities. Although it may feel like extra work at first, I believe that being curious will make every class more enjoyable.
TALEAH LEVIN A defining moment in my MI career was getting the opportunity to lead and put an assembly regarding antisemitism and No Place for Hate in front of the student body. It was probably the best assembly our school had seen since I have attended and I could not have been prouder to hear the positive feedback afterwards and know that our community was learning.
ELLA HENSEY
MAX JANTOS
As students at MIHS, we are so lucky and have many opportunities that other kids do not have. This island, to me, is filled with so many memories on literally every corner. There is never a day where I drive by somewhere on the island and can’t recall a funny memory. Make sure to take advantage of this beautiful island we call home. Go to the beach parks!! Groveland is a personal favorite of mine. Nothing is better than getting as many friends as possible together and having a barbeque at the beach in the sun. Explore Seattle. Once you get your license, go and explore all of the wonderful restaurants, cafes, and stores of Seattle. We live in a truly beautiful city and it would be shameful to not learn as much as you can about it before you leave. Lastly, spend as much time as you can with your friends. Senior year flies by and you have to soak it all in before it’s over. These memories are going to last forever, make them count!
If you have a problem with how things are being done, make your voice heard and make sure your voice and opinion are going to places where they will make change. There is a lot of reasonable complaint (and whining) that goes on within the student body, but these problems are rarely, if ever, addressed by the student body. If you have a problem with how the School Board is running things, go to a School Board meeting or email a member. If you have a problem with how your teacher is teaching, whether it is too much work or you aren’t learning, talk to or email the teacher. Teachers and admins don’t know about your life and the problems you have with the current system until you tell them. This is especially important with all the changes happening at the high school next year in regards to losing teachers, the loss of upper level classes, and the restriction of what classes students can take. If these changes bother you, then make that apparent and make sure the School Board knows. The current, future, and past student bodies all have a voice that will be heard by the School Board, and you will not see the change you want unless you act to initiate that change.
SARAH GEST Words of Wisdom from a Senior Bathrooms: 1. If you’re cold, go the 100-Hall bathrooms — they are always strangely warm. 2. Don’t vape. And especially don’t vape in the bathrooms. That’s just stupid. Lunch: 3. Be nice to the lunch ladies. They are great. 4. Even if someone starts yelling in the microphone that lunch is over, it is usually not. You still have plenty of time to finish your sandwich. Relax. 5. During lunch, the first two sets of doors in the freshman section are locked. The first week of school, you will see freshman after freshman try the doors unsuccessfully. Know the last set is the only one unlocked to avoid this classic pitfall. 6. Don’t leave your trash on the table. Just don’t. 7. Don’t disgrace Pasta Mondays. You might feel they are overrated but to avoid a hostile confrontation, never say it. Classroom: 8. You might think your teachers don’t notice you leaving the classroom for fifteen minutes to get food, but they do. They
JORDAN TILLINGER To all of the incoming freshman: do not worry about taking honors classes. Stop stressing out about your classes when your A drops to a B+. Just take a breath and know that you are going to be fine. The sun will still rise in the east and the next day will come. You are going to be fine, so try and have a little fun while you can while not doing something absurdly stupid. Have fun and try not screw too badly.

know and they talk about it. 9. You might think your teachers don’t notice that you are mysteriously absent on quiz and test days. They know and they talk about it. Other: 10. Busiest library printing time: Friday morning. Legend has it, there is a printer in the Counseling Center. They say it exists but don’t believe it till you see it. College/Senior Year: 11. Be careful using the term “safety school.” Just be mindful that your “safety school” might be someone else’s dream school. Use the Golden Rule. 12. Applying to college is not fun. Plain and simple. You can be proactive and get them all done in the summer, or not. If you got them done early, frequently reminding people who are still working on them that you finished all your applications a long time ago might not be the best thing to do. Whether you are working on them or not during fall of senior year, you might find yourself talking about college applications a lot. Talking about colleges with your friends can be a great way to vent and de-stress, but don’t let it consume your conversations. Try to still be present in the now and relax.

Beijha Sibrian Thank you Bixby for having con fidence in me when I didn’t have any in myself . You are one of the few teachers in this school I can confront without feeling unsure of myself and students can count on you. The band program is what it is because you’ve put your heart into it. KELSEY BOOSMAN - PLP Teacher
I came to Mercer Island all the way from North Carolina three years ago and there was definitely some culture shock. Everyone said 85 degrees was hot, I couldn’t find any good barbecue, and the traffic! Yikes! With that being said, my experience being a teacher at MIHS has been great. There is such a community of inclusivity amongst the students and wonderful resources in the city itself. I felt accepted right away and ended up having some amazing relationships with the coworkers I met here. My students have all been fantastic and getting to see them grow over the last three years has brought me so much joy. I’m sad to leave but so excited to take everything I’ve learned here and apply it all to my new job (which is literally 1/15th of the commute I’m making right now). The opportunity to bring some of the amazing teaching practices and ideas to a smaller district with fewer resources is really exciting to me and I will always be grateful to Mercer Island for helping me develop the skills I have today!
DANIEL YI - Biology, Robotics Teacher
To my MIHS students, both current and past: you have no idea how much of an impact you’ve made on my life. I may have played it cool, or gotten frustrated at times, but know that every single one of you has sharpened me, made me into a better person. I am so proud of your accomplishments, and the young adults that you have become. Graduating seniors, you were the first students that I ever had the privilege of teaching, so it seems kind of poetic that I leave with you. I look forward to keeping in touch and seeing what amazing experiences you create for yourself outside of this bubble. Juniors, you were my first real students. Thank you for giving a brand new teacher an amazing year, and affirming my decision to teach. Current sophomores, I couldn’t have asked for a more entertaining, memorable group of kids to finish my career at this high school with. Even though I leave your high school, I’ll always cherish the relationships we’ve built together, and will do my best to help you wherever you need it. Thank you all for making me laugh every day, for rewarding my faith in you with hard work and for simply being yourself.
KIM SCHJELDERUP - Math, Econ Teacher
In reflecting on my life at MIHS I first want to thank my amazing colleagues. MIHS has been my second family and I will miss the staff. Especially my mathies, who have been the most amazing and supportive people anyone could ever hope to work with. I will miss the students and their gracious “thank you” on a daily basis. Keep thanking your teachers as we really do appreciate it. I will miss my workout group, for whom I am grateful since when I “ditch” they never scold me but always welcome me back to join in on the fun and are so supportive when I struggle. Be good to each other and to yourselves. Remember your character is what defines you, and not your GPA. Grades will come and go, but who you are is with you forever. How you affect others will be remembered for eternity, so be kind and gracious. There is life after high school that comes in all sorts of packages. I am going to find my package this fall as I have temporarily “graduated” and am looking forward to the reprieve.
EMILY LANGE - English Teacher
Like any other random place we find ourselves in, every site has it’s magic. My unexpected placement to student teach here, a little over a year ago, resulted in the subsequent opportunity to teach here. I’m thankful to Curtis Johnston and Vicki Puckett for taking a chance on me, giving me the opportunity to teach English to the young folks of MI. I had no idea what to expect in terms of experience, growth and support - but all of that I’ve received tenfold (thank you Jeff, Alex, Jenny, Eric, Jamie, Kyle, Creighton, Kit, Sarah!). I’m grateful for the time I spent here and the enthusiastic students I had the privilege to teach. From the youngest student to the most veteran staff member, you are a tight-knit, very passionate community -- one that is incredibly inspiring. Thank you for showing me the ropes!
Thank you to the rest of the staff who will be leaving: YVONNE FONG – Special Ed. Teacher
KIMBERLY WILSON – Math Teacher
CATHY GENTINO – R&R Counselor
KRISTIN BELL – Special Ed. Teacher
JIMMY VASQUEZ – Counselor
As a counselor at MIHS, Gentino was stationed at the Resource & Referral station, specializing in mental health issues. She was also the former advisor to Natural Helpers and the advisor to Queer Straight Alliance.
Fong spent her time at MIHS as a special education teacher.

JOURNALISM SENIORS 11
Grady Short
Jake D’Souza
EDITOR IN CHIEF
BUSINESS MANAGER
When I came into MIHS from out of the district, I transitioned from a grade of 35 to one of 400. The school seemed enormous, intimidating and impenetrable. Journalism has not only helped me find my niche, but also learn about MIHS’s many facets. It’s not an easy resume booster, and it’s sometimes thankless work, yet everyone who takes Journalism comes away from the class with a new appreciation for the staff, students and surrounding community. This is why I’ve spent so much of my time in this school involving myself in Journalism. Without it, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to be a senior class officer or club president. Without it, I would never have met the awesome fellow students — and adviser — who have put so much hard work into this program. Without it, high school wouldn’t have been the same.
Hannah Whobrey FEATURES EDITOR It’s impossible to sum up how much Journalism, Twombley and this paper have meant to me, so instead I want to dedicate my reflection to what I’ve learned. First, say yes to more things — the best memories are made from last minute plans. Second, the 100-Hall is always cold, so bring a sweater (or maybe just stop taking science). Third, no one cares more about what you’re doing than you, so do everything. I promise no one else cares. Last, every relationship is built on shared experiences, so go make some.
Ben Capuano A&E COLUMNIST I was sitting with one of my friends by the water in downtown Seattle when she asked me if I ever forget how beautiful it is here. Her question made me realize that I didn’t spend nearly enough time appreciating my surroundings as I should’ve. All through high school, people tend to make a big fuss about going to things like games, dances and other social events. There are many good reasons behind asking people to partake in all of these, but I don’t think anyone should feel guilty about enjoying things by themselves either. There were all sorts of spirit events that I ended up passing up for one reason or another. Even though people kept telling me to feel bad that I missed out in the moment, looking back, I couldn’t be happier about the things I enjoyed instead. The decisions we make over how we feel about our high school years are ours to make alone. If I could change one thing about my time at MIHS, it’s that I wish I realized this earlier. Then maybe I could’ve spent more time loving the wonderful place I live.
Four years ago, I walked into Twombley’s class thinking I would get an easy A and move on to do something I was more interested in, like Marketing. I ended up slacking off with a poor grade in the class. Yet here I am, four years later, still in Journalism. I may have only written about five articles total, but being a member of this staff has been the most memorable part of high school. What I loved most about my time in Journalism was the connections I made with my classmates. The editors and staff writers I’ve met over the last four years are some of the brightest and most creative people at MIHS. I will forever cherish the hours of political debates and the endless laughs we’ve shared. I would not be as interested in business as I am today without Twombley entrusting me with the finances of the newspaper and allowing me to make and fix my own mistakes. I would not be the person that I am today without the inclusive and supporting environment that is Journalism. Current and future Journalism members, please continue growing the paper, advocate for yourselves and others, and give a voice to the students. Most importantly, enjoy your time here because it really will fly by. Jive. Jove. Journ.

What’s up? If you’re looking for something deep, go read Grady’s reflection or something. If you’re here, you’re probably bored of all that sappy jazz. Journalism has been the biggest factor in my development as a writer, but more importantly it’s been an opportunity to be funny. Why stop now? So, I’m leaving you all with some article ideas that never made it to fruition: ‘Most of ’ Posters a Success; MIHS Vaping Drops to 0% Snail Pound Initiation Revealed to be 20 Hours of Community Service ‘Drill Team is Sexist Because They Don’t Let Men In,’ says rejected student with no dance experience Freshman Pretends to be Wasted to Justify SafeRides Call White Student Union Doesn’t Realize Their Mistake Until It’s Too Late Student With Rolly Backpack Attempts 200-Hall Crossing Lack of Upset Home Fans Breaks Star Player’s Heart at the Same Time as His Tibia

Hayden is just straight up one of the nicest kids I have ever met. He never fails to be kind to those around him, which is something we need more of in our community.

Kevin, you’re the most honest, genuine, and thoughtful person I know. You’re the kind of friend who always brings me something from your vacation and makes an entire meal for my family when my mom breaks her hip. I’m so lucky to call you my friend and I can’t wait for four more years with you. Go Dawgs!
