RACKMS ‘Out of box’ solution

EXCLU

Unite has launched their new easy to use Rack Management Solution, RackMS. It is an easy to install, ‘Out of the Box’, ready to run solution, which can be deployed on a per rack basis, to monitor, alert and manage ‘real time’ power in both legacy and new build data centres. Utilising the highest levels of enterprise platform technology and best in class monitoring accuracy of better than 1% at outlet level, the new RackMS solution requires fewer IP addresses and brings greater resilience and higher reliability than many of the other IP based power distribution solutions currently available within the marketplace. Greater resilience and higher reliability are achieved as the RackMS has been developed in line with Unite’s unique design philosophy. By moving the intelligence/electronics, which supports the power strip functionality, out of the power strip and into the RackMS platform, the need for an internal power supply to the strip is eliminated. This ensures that there is no compromise to resilience nor that any unacceptable operational disruption and downtime caused by elevated exhaust temperature fluctuations from the rack Servers is introduced. The RackMS solution is fully scalable and future proofed for enhanced monitoring and automated reporting. To find out more about the Unite RackMS solution, visit our Unite page www.nbm-distribution.co.uk/unite.php or call the NBM sales team.

Features include: • Monitoring of RMS Volts, RMS Amps, kVA, kW, kWHrs, Power Factor, and Frequency. • Supports 2 power strips and 4 auto sense sensors per rack. • A choice of 2 power devices per rack, either Intelligent Power Strips, Noninvasive monitoring devices (eg CL-Amp) or In-line intelligent IQ-Adapters. • Two temperature sensors provided as standard. • Two spare sensor ports with an optional choice of sensors which can be added at any time. • Easy to install client based monitoring software included

ARE YOUR PATCHLEADS SUB-STANDARD? Buying low-cost patchleads, which are often poor quality and not fit for purpose, could pose serious problems for your clients business. Many low cost patchleads are now being manufactured using copper clad aluminium wire. They look the same as higher quality

patchleads but when used can cause problems such reduced download speeds. Copper clad aluminium cables are not permitted by the IEC or CENELEC in their cabling standards, and they directly contravene the Cat5e and Cat6 specifications, which state that conductors used must be copper. Use of copper clad aluminium patchleads may affect customers that upgrade to Gigabit Ethernet or implement

don’t forget nbm can

OwLTREK OTDR

supply a wide range of

equivalent cables to meet your everyday needs

New from Psiber is the OWLTrek OTDR, which has a high resolution 2.8” colour LCD display and is an excellent choice for engineers who need to perform basic troubleshooting or restorative tasks on single mode fibre optic networks. Key features of the instrument include automatic event location, normally only found on more expensive units, which marks events on a trace, has an event table which shows location, type, reflectance level and loss of each event, and autozooms to the selected event. A further feature of this instrument is the automatic screen rotation facility, making reading trace information easier.

PoE solutions, as the conductors have a lower electrical performance and could have issues when used to power equipment that is in continuous use. NBM only sell copper patchleads, providing you and your clients with the confidence that the products they receive from us are fit for purpose and will meet the standards required.

Zero U – The RapidNet-Ready Cabinet HellermannTyton have developed a range of RapidNet-ready cabinets that accommodate cassettes vertically in a Zero-U configuration, which allows the full use of the horizontal rack space. This innovative design maximizes space for active equipment. It can be used with either a copper or fibre RapidNet solution and improves the air flow through the cabinet. This solution is ideal for the data centre environment and comms rooms where space is a limited, extra connectivity comes at a premium and maximising revenue per square metre is essential. The RapidNet cassettes simply push into the shrouds that are already

fitted to the cabinet uprights and the cable looms are dressed into the mesh on the side of cabinet. Available in 22, 27, 42 and 47U options and manufactured to suit standard cabling or Cat6A solutions, or cabinets suitable for active equipment and cabling applications and incorporates features to maximise and direct air flow through the cabinet. NBM’S KAT FARTHING CLIMBS Kilimanjaro to help raise funds for Help FOR Heroes Last year I learnt an important lesson not to make big decisions when you have a hangover, especially when you’re only doing something to prove a point to someone you’ll never meet again! I visited a travel show where I enquired about climbing Kilimanjaro for charity. The organiser had a sceptical look on his face suggesting that I might not be up to it and that a less challenging holiday would be more suitable. Perhaps it was the heels, fake nails and skinny jeans that made him wary! On the off chance that he reads our newsletter I would like him to know that despite his distinct lack of confidence, I did it! I decided I’d use the trip to raise money for the charity Help for Hero’s because almost everyone knows someone that has completed a tour in Iraq or Afghanistan, and no-one can deny the amazing bravery and sacrifice of our servicemen and women. Flying from Kenya to Tanzania we passed Kilimanjaro, which stood way above the clouds as we were flying past. At this point I began to think the man at the Travel Show may have been right in his assumption! The first few days were each an amazing adventure and I could easily write several pages about these, but the highlights had to be getting roast potatoes for dinner, how they made them in a tent up a mountain I’ll never know, and seeing the monkeys in the rainforest. By the end of day three altitude sickness had seriously kicked in and that was the last time I ate a meal for four days. At midnight on the 3rd/4th day we started the final ascent up what I came to find in daylight was an almost sheer wall. The only way I can describe the effects of lack of oxygen at this height is that it’s like being drunk. By this point I couldn’t even tie my boot laces as I’d lost all

co-ordination. We set off in a single file line zig-zagging in the pitch black up the side of the crater in about ten layers of clothes, as by this point it the temperature was –25°C. I have no idea how I kept going through the next five hours and I lost all track of time, as it seemed to be never ending. I’d just decided that on the next break I was going to have to give up as I just didn’t have anything left in me, but when we stopped and I turned round you could see a red line on the horizon. Knowing that we were supposed to be at the top for sunrise I figured we were almost there, which the guides confirmed. This turned out to be a lie, but it got me to the crater top, an hour and a half later. It was another two hour walk around the top of the crater to get to the official highest point and in all honesty I don’t really remember much of it, as I was so ill from the altitude sickness by that point. Luckily one of the guides could see this so took my camera off me and took some amazing pictures of me up there, even if I don’t really remember it. Nine of the 12 of us made it right to the top and cheesy as it sounds it was the proudest moment of my whole life. I didn’t know it was possible to be so physically exhausted or in so much pain. Trying to keep

aaron murray

going forward when you know all you need to do to start feeling better is turn round and go down is unbelievably hard, but I really wouldn’t change a minute of it. I’d tell anyone that’s ever considered going to do it, as it’s impossible to explain how amazing the whole experience was. I would say though, if like you me you gave everything you had to get to the top, it’s a long two days walk back down to the hotel! Back to reality at home I discovered that with the help of a generous donation from NBM I’d raised just over £1500. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that sponsored me and I’m sure it goes without saying that it will be put to brilliant use by Help for Hero’s.
